Gift donations sought for Carver Center holiday party – Norwalk Citizen

Gift donations sought for Carver Center holiday party – Norwalk Citizen.

The Carver Foundation of Norwalk is collecting new, unwrapped holiday toys and gifts for children.

The agency’s goal is to provide a gift to each child who participates in its annual holiday party.

Volunteers are also sought to help wrap the presents, as well as donate wrapping paper and tape.

The gifts will be given to youngsters during the party set for 6 p.m. Dec. 13 at the center. The party will be hosted by the 11th-grade class at St. Luke’s School of New Canaan.

To donate a gift, bring it to the Carver Center through Dec. 12. The center is at 7 Academy St., and is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Norwalk ACTS, of which Carver is a member, continues to make progress in its work with the STRIVE Network

In 2012, Norwalk ACTS members joined the STRIVE network and the work continues in earnest today as together we get ever closer to achieving new outcomes for Norwalk’s young people and families.

Here is a news video from earlier this year of a key STRIVE meeting.

STRIVE, founded in the Cincinnati area in 2006, created a framework for cradle-to-career programs that has since been expanded nationwide. In addition to STRIVE network members in cities across Ohio, the network has also expanded into New York state and city and Providence, Rhode Island.

Educators are increasingly focusing on the ninth grade as the year that determines whether a young person will move on or drop out of school. According to research published in the journal Education, ninth graders have the lowest grade point average, the most missed classes, the majority of failing grades, and more misbehavior referrals than any other high-school grade level. Ninth grade has increasingly become a “bottleneck” for students: A joint report from Princeton University and the Brookings Institution found “in 1970, there were 3 percent fewer tenth graders than ninth graders; by 2000, that share had risen to 11 percent.”

First County Bank Foundation Grants $91,000 to Norwalk Non-Profits – Good News – Norwalk, CT Patch.

Established in honor of the bank’s 150th anniversary, the First County Bank Foundation was created to distribute funds annually to nonprofit organizations that support community and economic development for children and families. As a mutual bank with no shareholders, First County Bank considers contributions made by the foundation a means of paying dividends back to the local communities it serves.

The Carver Foundation of Norwalk received a grant of $7,500 for the Norwalk Mentor Program that coordinates a structured one-on-one mentoring relationship between a student and adult volunteer.
