American Idol Top 3 'Judges' Choice' Picks

2020-01-10T23:49:00.000-08:00

By M.S. Chloe

Friday was 'Homecoming Day' for the American Idol Top 3 contestants. During this whirl-wind meet-the-fans/media blitz - which included parades, singing of "The National Anthem", interviews and their first chance to sing original songs for their fans - Crystal Bowersox, Casey James and Lee DeWyze learned what song the judges have picked for them to perform this Tuesday.

This week, the Top 3 will perform 2 songs. One will be the judges' choice and the other is the finalist's choice.

Ellen Degeneres picked "Maybe I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney for Crystal.

Casey James will be singing "Daughters" by John Mayer, chosen by Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardia.

Simon Cowell picked "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen for Lee to perform. Tim Urban already sang it this season and Jason Castro gave a great performance of Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah" during Season 7. (It's on Jason Castro's new album...you gotta get it!)

So you don't have to go searching around, I've included the video for Daughters below.

Casey James compares ‘American Idol’ to winning the lottery

Casey James was voted off American Idol last night, but he has no regrets. In fact, he compared his time on Idol to winning the lottery. “Winning $10 million in a lottery or $100 million, it can’t be bad,” he said. James referred to the fact that his life will be forever changed due to the exposure he received on American Idol. Below is a list of other third place finishers, many of whom have found success during their post-Idol careers:

(Click their names to listen to their music)
* Season 1: Nikki McKibbin – Debut album: Unleashed
* Season 2: Kimberly Locke – Debut album: One Love
* Season 3: Jasmine Trias – Debut album: Jasmine Trias
* Season 4: Vonzell "Baby V" Solomon - My Struggle
* Season 5: Elliot Yamin – Debut album: Elliott Yamin
* Season 6: Melinda Doolittle – Debut album: Coming Back To You
* Season 7: Syesha Mercado
* Season 8: Danny Gokey – Debut album: My Best Days
* Season 9: Casey James

Of all the third place American Idol finishers, Kimberly Locke, Elliott Yamin, Melinda Doolittle and Danny Gokey have experienced the greatest degrees of success. Elliott Yamin’s album debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart at #3, selling 90,000 copies in its first week. It was certified gold on October 12, 2007. Plus, on the Billboard.com's end of decade charts, Elliott Yamin's self-titled debut album was placed at #39 on the top independent albums of the decade list. Danny Gokey released his debut album just two months ago and he is currently the opening act on Sugarland’s Incredible Machine tour. Kimberly Locke was the first artist signed to Randy Jackson’s dance music label, Dream Merchant 21. Her latest single Strobelight continues to do well on iTunes. Melinda Doolittle’s debut album has sold over 53,000 copies. So even though he came in third place on season nine of American Idol, Casey James has a tremendous chance of securing a recording contract and launching a successful career. It’s just like winning the lottery.

Casey James reflects on his American Idol experience with good memories. “At first, I had no expectations of getting past the stadium. You make it past that level and you want to go to the next level and so on and so forth. It really sinks in when you go back home. You realize this is so much more than anything you ever expected,” James said. Fans should not be disappointed about his elimination. Casey James will be back in the spotlight very soon.

Casey James Calls 'American Idol' Duet with Bret Michaels 'An Honor'

2020-01-10T23:25:00.000-08:00

'After the stuff I had been through with my motorcycle wreck, we immediately hit it off,' James says of Poison frontman.

Casey James is still riding high since finishing third on "American Idol," but his favorite moment on the show actually occurred after he'd been given the boot: his finale-night performance with Bret Michaels.

Their surprise duet on the Poison classic "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" was a highlight of the show, especially given the myriad health scares Michaels had survived in recent months. But that's only part of the reason James will always remember the moment. Turns out, he was unaware that he'd be performing with Michaels until 48 hours before the show aired.

"Well, they give us the songs, and they say, 'This is the song you're going to be doing, you're going to be doing a duet,' and I see the song and I'm like, 'Why are you having me do this song? I know Bret Michaels is ill, so who are they gonna have sing the song with me?' I was just very confused," James told MTV News. "Then, I think it was two days before the show — Bret Michaels, [producers] were calling him 'rock star,' that was, like, the code name for the guy I was playing with — and so they said, 'Rock star wants to see you.' And I'm like, 'OK, so I'm gonna meet the dude, or the female, or whoever it is that I'm doing the song with,' and I walked in and there he is, and I was like, 'You gotta be kidding me.' "

James said he was in awe of the Poison frontman at first, but the two quickly bonded ... over their respective near-death experiences, oddly enough.

"He's an amazing dude, and I think it says a lot about him, what the music does for him ... it's just unbelievable. And after the stuff that I had been through with my motorcycle wreck [in 2004], we just kind of immediately hit it off," James explained. "And for him to be coming back, and for me to be on the stage when that happened? I mean, what an honor. I'll never forget it for the rest of my life."

And though their on-air performance was certainly one for the "Idol" history books, James said that the duo's rehearsals were even more memorable, allowing him to fulfill a lifelong dream to jam with one of his musical idols.

"We had a lot of fun in rehearsals, we were laughing and playing," he said. "The coolest thing was when I first met him and we just immediately started jamming, and we were trying to figure out the arrangement for the song and the amount of time we had ... it was great. He's the nicest guy ever."

Casey James ~ A Tale of 6 Guitars!

2020-01-10T23:04:00.000-08:00

More on Casey James' guitars

Turns out Casey James doesn't play five guitars on four songs. He plays six guitars on five songs, since he also plays on the American Idol Live show's finale, a cover of Bon Jovi's "It's My Life".

Here's the rundown:

* a 1983 blue Fender Stratocaster for I Got Mine;
* a Paul Reed Smith acoustic and a white Fender Stratocaster for Don't!;
* a Gibson nylon-string guitar for Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman;
* a PRS Starla for It's All Over Now;
* and a PRS 513 for It's My Life.

Why does he need six guitars for five songs? "Because they all sound different," Casey said afterwards. "Big time. Like night and day."

And for seriously gearheaded Casey James fans, apparently he uses Dunlop Tortex .88 mm guitar picks. Because I think he hit me on the shoulder with one when he threw it from the stage, and it landed in my shirt pocket. I say "apparently" because I didn't actually see him throw it, and I didn't find the pick until I got back to my hotel room -- though I did spend a while after the show helping the people next to me look for it.

Casey James to Follow in Carrie Underwood's Footsteps
American Idol’s Casey James is not on eye candy, he’s a really great musician! Hollyscoop got EXCLUSIVE one-on-one time with him, and he talked all about playing with Bret Michaels, the Idol tour, and his foray into country music.

James captured our hearts with his messy blonde hair and cute dimples, but he really impressed with his improvements each week, which eventually landed him in the top three finalists this season.

American Idol Contestants to Go Shirtless on Tour?

But one of the highlights of the whole season happened on the last night, when James got the opportunity to perform with Bret Michaels. Casey told us, “It was amazing because he’s somebody I always listened to, he’s a legend. And somebody like that you just dont expect them to be super nice guy and he is. He’s got an amazing and great attitude. He’s got a great personality. And so it was amazing and to feel the energy of the crowd when he walked out after everything he has gone through. For me to b eon the stage at that moment was overwhelming and something I will never forget."

He may not have won it all, but Casey is on tour this summer with the other 9 finalists, and they were given a lot of freedom with song choice. “It’s huge we get to pick our own songs,” James told Hollyscoop EXCLUSIVELY. “There will be stuff from the show as well as stuff that wasn’t on the show.”

American Idol Going Down Next Season

And though James has been hard at work on some original songs, he tells us those won’t be performed on tour. “Unfortunately we’re not doing any originals on the tour but it’s going to be great stuff,” he explained. “I’m going to be doing a set that I picked. It’s full songs, I’m playing guitar and everyone is going to be having a blast. So I can’t wait to do it. “

As for post- tour? Casey is ready to begin his career, and we hear he’s following in fellow Idol Carrie Underwood’s footsteps by going country!

“Here’s the deal,” James told us. “I’m talking to Sony in Nashville, and if things work out there, which I am hope that they do, it is a big wide open space in that room and what I do will fit. But it wont be traditional country by any means. It’s going to be me playing and singing doing what I do. And that will just be where I fit, I think.”

He continued, “I grew up listening to George Jons, Merle Haggard, Waylon & Willie, and all those guys. So it’s like it’s a big part of who I am. And any time I play an acoustic set I’m going to play at least half of it will be straight up country. That’s who I am. I’m from Texas, it’s never going to change.”

Sounds like Casey is on the right track! What’s interesting is that we’re more into what Casey is up to than the winner Lee DeWyze and runner-up Crystal Bowersox! Just goes to show you don’t have to win the competition to be a success! Check out our EXCLUSIVE interview with Casey below!

After the American Idol show tonight (last night, Wednesday, August 25th) at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri, Casey James was taken to a local area hospital where he was examined and later discharged. The information that Casey was sick came first via Twitter as fans at the show tweeted that he had been coughing on stage, looked ill during the final number, and was taken to a nearby hospital immediately after the show.

His twitter fans worried about his health and launched an all-out tweeting effort to find out where he was taken and what his condition was. After about an hour, fans were updated by his mother, Debra "Bybee" James. She tweeted:

Hello my friends. I found him and spoke with him briefly. He said "Im fine Momma". He had to go. They're treating him. Thank you so much for all your sweet thoughts & prayers. He told me he would call me later. God bless y'all. Don't know anyone who could have better fans.

The musician and singer/songwriter who’s been fronting the Casey James Band since 2008, had never even seen a single episode of the top rated show before auditioning in Denver and winning a golden ticket to Hollywood.

An elated James remarked, "Some dreams in life are only just that....dreams. All my life I have wanted this and now my dream has come true. Words can't describe how thankful and blessed I am for the opportunity to give back to all those who have supported me. I'm going to work hard to make the best album possible! MINERAL WELLS — Where else but America (possibly Great Britain, too), could a musician from a small community rise to national recognition in a mater of months.

“Where could this happen,” queried Debra James
to a roomful of Kiwanis members Tuesday. “He went from playing in little bars to performing in a packed Nokia Theater.”

James, the mother of Cool-born Casey James, spoke to the group about her journey with the Fox Television show “American Idol.”

She recounted one gig she played with Casey in Grapevine one fall, where the audience was more interested in the Cowboys football game playing on the screen behind them.

“When we played in Grapevine, he turned to me and said, ‘Mom, I think we could set ourselves on fire and nobody would notice.’”

In a matter of weeks this spring, Casey’s popularity skyrocketed while competing in the top ranks of “Idol.”

“He couldn’t go shopping near the end [of “American Idol”] and he had bodyguards,” she told Tuesday’s audience. “Boy, that was real different for him.”

James said as her son progressed up the ranks in the show, “Idol” started providing wardrobe support. She illustrated this with the English Laundry shirt he wore during his homecoming tour, as well as on other occasions. She held up the pale blue shirt, carefully tailored to her son’s lean body.

“He’s six-four” and has a 30-inch waist, so they had to take [his shirts] up,” she said.

As she spoke, James entertained questions from Kiwanians.

“How do they get along as a family?” Penni Beauregard asked about the 10 Idols who will be touring together this summer, starting today in Michigan.

“I think it’s like any other family,” replied James, adding, “Casey can get along with anyone. He just rolls with it.”

During her visits to Hollywood, Debra James said she became closest with the families of “Andrew Garcia, he’s just precious, Tim Urban, a Texas boy, and little Aaron [Kelley, the] little bitty boy with a big voice,” whom she also called “cute as a spotted pup.”

The “American Idol" tour covers the nation and runs through Sept. 16. (See Blog for UPDATED TOUR SCHEDULE!!)

“It’s staggering how many dates they have for the tour,” said Debra James. She said the singers they travel by bus to each location and will be in Texas Aug. 7 (Houston) and Aug. 9 (Dallas).

James informed members of a studio recording she particularly liked of “Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman” – a duet performed by Casey James and Michael Lynche – which James had specifically asked his mother if she listened to.

“They let Casey lose on a Spanish guitar,” she said, citing that this will be on the tour. “They’re keeping the other two a secret.”

Did the experience change Casey?

“As a person, he hasn’t changed at all. He really knows who he is. He’s very grounded,” said Debra James. “He gained a lot of knowledge of the music industry.”

“Casey is in a genre all to his own. He likes blues, country, alternative, rock. He loves BB King and Merle Haggard. He hasn’t pigeon-holed himself in one area.

“‘American Idol’ didn’t know what to do with him,” she added.

When Beauregard asked what was “fantastic” and what was Casey’s “biggest disappointment” with the experience, James replied, “I know he would say there was no disappointment. Casey’s an extremely positive person. He views everything as part of a bigger plan.

“I was a screaming maniac, but he was fine. Casey’s very comfortable in his own skin,” she said.

She told Tuesday’s audience, that her son is “more knowledgeable now. He went from a tiny pond and he’s swimming with the sharks.

“Musically [Casey] has had to push himself to a different level,” she said.

“The low point for me was his second performance, ‘I Don’t Wanna Be,’” James said. “I could see how proud he was and they bashed him. He got very ill after that and stayed ill for weeks. He was close to going to the hospital.”

“He pushed himself through that and went through five rounds of antibiotics back-to back. One performance, his third [when he sang Keith Urban’s “You’ll Think of Me”], he was so sick and very subdued and had to push himself through it,” said his mother. She said the doctor who has worked with the show all nine seasons called this the “sickest group of kids he’s seen.”

But, she said there were high points and her son’s biggest surprise was “being able to be with Harry Connick Jr. He’s a writer, singer, composer, the best pianist, a great husband and father and a great guy. He gives a lot. He’s a freak of nature – he does everything perfect.”

She told the group Tuesday that Casey called her during his mentor session and handed the phone to Connick.

“He said, ‘Is this Momma James?’ I said yes it is, knowing who was on the phone. He said, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do with this son of yours; he’s so ugly.’ He said, ‘I came in the door and he thinks I’m Chris Isaak,’” James said of Connick’s joking phone conversation with her.

“The best advice he got was from Bret Michaels [with whom Casey performed “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” on the show’s finale] and Harry Connick Jr.,” James said.

Since Casey James made it to the final three, he came home in May, to all his homes – Fort Worth, Cool and Millsap, not to mention early-morning interviews in Dallas and appearances in Grapevine and Richardson, too.

“The whole experience coming home was so overwhelming,” said Debra James.

“One of the things I wanted to share with you,” she told Tuesday’s audience, “Someone said, ‘Don’t the Fort Worth police have something better to do than usher Casey James around Fort Worth.’ All of those where off-duty police that ‘American Idol’ paid.”

Casey James came to his native land last of all, visiting Cool then performing in Millsap’s Bulldog Stadium.

“He was thrilled at all of it,” she said coming back to his boyhood home. “He was awestruck in the limo. He was just staring. It was surreal.”

She said her son gave out a deep “horse laugh” when he saw one of the mounted Parker County Sheriff’s Posse with a sign saying “Hi Simon” taped to the horse’s hind end.
