It's high time that this is blog post official... Cash's crew is expanding this fall. Baby Boy West #2 is due October 29, 2016! We are SO excited about adding another little boy to our family and we can't wait to meet our son!

As un-ceremonious as it may be 7 months in, I'm finally getting around to posting about expecting our second baby. As much as I'd love to say I'm a successful blogger of our life events, I love even more that I know when something I enjoy isn't just an outlet, but a distraction. Keeping up with a wild toddler, opposite work schedules, maintaing our household, enjoying time with family & friends, and balancing Aaron's grad school schedule make for plenty of "busy," for me. My down time has been spent much differently lately... more naps, more Netflix and more ice cream, if you must know. Someday though, I'll likely look back and wish I would have written more about this pregnancy and our growing family, so better late then never is just going to have to work this time around. I have no plans to do a weekly pregnancy update, but I wanted to jot down a few current thoughts and reflections comparing this pregnancy to my last pregnancy.

Today : 31 weeks + 2 days (this picture is from 29 weeks, since then I have cut 6" off my hair and gained a few lbs)

Weight Gain : 20ish lbs... I was slowly losing weight when I got pregnant this time around (I'd guess I was about 5 lbs less than when I got pregnant with Samson) so it's difficult to give an accurate number. I gained weight slower at first and then faster in the 2nd trimester. I'm still not sure if it's something I care more or less about this time around.

Maternity Clothes : Of course! My belly expanded much quicker this pregnancy! I love the warm weather of summer, but I'm ready for it to cool down a little bit... my wardrobe will expand significantly when I can start wearing long sleeves and sweaters!

Stretch Marks : I have a few that arrived AFTER the birth of Samson... which doesn't seem fair does it?... but I'm not sure that I'm accumulating more at this point. They were kind of hard to see in the first place and my belly is a little too round for me to report on the current state of them. Second time around, I can honestly say it's not something I care about. Don't expect a weekly play by play. You'll still see me in a bikini next summer.

Sleep : So good! Looking back at posts from my pregnancy with Samson, I can't believe how much trouble I was having with sleep by this point. Maybe I've just adjusted my expectations of a good night of sleep now that I'm a parent, but I do think this pregnancy has been much easier on my body than the last time around. No insomnia, no carpel tunnel and no sore joints to keep me up at night... yet. Woohoo!

Sickness : None. At all. The whole time. Can I get an AMEN?! After throwing up daily for half of my pregnancy with Samson, this has been the most welcome of changes. I have been dealing with heart burn lately, but maybe that just means we're getting set up for another hairy newborn?

Movement : So much! Samson doesn't know what's going on yet, but his baby brother has been kicking him quite a bit lately. I love feeling a baby move in my belly, it's one of my absolute favorite parts of pregnancy. I'm also pretty sure that baby boy is also doing a little bit of "Wax on, wax off" because his movements seem super rhythmic and strange lately.

Craving : Twizzlers! I have eaten more strawberry Twizzlers in the past seven months then in my last 26 years combined. It's a distinct possibility that this child will be born with red hair, courtesy of all the Red 40 color. My first trimester, I was obsessed with strawberry everything... I could have eaten strawberry jelly with a spoon. In fact, I might have. I'll never tell. It's worth mentioning that I also still love Dr. Pepper and donuts, but Aaron says I can't claim those as pregnancy cravings anymore.. that they are just my favorite things, since I kept up the habit long after Samson had been born. ;)

Exciting happenings : So far this pregnancy has been an easy, healthy one. Hopefully the next 9ish weeks are just as great as the last 31 have been. We've stocked up on Pampers Swaddlers (yes we still cloth diaper Samson & will cloth diaper this babe after a few months as well). We bought Samson a big boy bed so we'll be ready to upgrade him when he's done with his crib... hopefully the timing will work out with his little brother. We're in no rush since we plan on the baby sleeping in our room for several months in the bassinet. We have a bought a few sweet little outfits for baby boy, I'm on the hunt for a new baby blanket and lovie. We have been evaluating everything we have and the things we need to purchase/upgrade this time around. I'm trying my hardest to hold out until October to start un-boxing all of the baby things we have packed away! We're all starting to get really excited around here!

Finally Spring

It's funny that it felt like spring took so long to arrive in Indiana this year, especially since we had such a mild winter. But, the yard has been mowed for the first time, there are dandelions a plenty, and it's comfortable enough to wear shorts and shirt sleeves. So without further adieu, I declare it spring.

I don't pull out my camera often enough to take pictures of Samson. I have come up with a handful of excuses but, the easiest to toss around is "Now that he's ~~walking~~ running, it's too hard to take nice pictures." Which is, in fact, totally true. But, the thought of these memories being lost on me someday breaks my heart. So today, we took some pictures. They aren't perfect, they aren't composed, they aren't even edited... but, they are of my sweet little backyard adventurer and of moments I hope I never forget.

Samson's Easter Basket

When I was growing up, the Easter bunny only left candy in our baskets (with the exception of the year that I was treated in the hospital for dehydration and wasn't allowed to have candy... worst year ever!) so it feels a little sacrilegious to be picking out non-edibles for my own kid's Easter basket. However, I'm not about to give my 1 year old any candy either, so we're changing things up for Easter in our house this year. A couple snacks and a few fun things will be a nice surprise for Sam, without taking away from the real magic of Easter (Can't wait to shout "He is risen! Alleluia!" in a few days!)

Cherokee Shirt How cute is this spring shirt I picked up from Target? I think I paid $4 for it. If you ask me, it's kind of silly to put clothes in an Easter basket, but I've been buying spring clothes for Samson anyways, might as well give the Bunny credit for something ;)

Bunny Graham Crackers One of Samson's favorite snacks. These are always in our grocery cart anyways ($2), it's just a happy coincidence that the bunny shape is perfect for Easter.

Bubbles Kids love bubbles! Samson has no idea how they work yet, but he absolutely loves chasing them around. Just $1 from the outdoor toy section at Target.

Toddler Crayons Shaped crayons that are easy for little hands to hold (he keeps breaking all the regular shaped crayons with his wild coloring) and less than $5 on Amazon.

Plum Organics Snack Pouch Samson loves these snack pouches. We always have them stocked in the pantry. We usually pick them up for $1 and they are the perfect mess free snack/ on the go meal.

Guess How Much I Love You A classic book to add to our mini-library, bonus points for bunnies! Got it for $4.50 on Amazon.

Another Memory for the Baby Book

Well, a little over a week ago, Samson's long, wispy baby hair, a.k.a. the sweetest mullet I have ever seen, has officially been trimmed up into a toddler hair cut. My sister-in-law, Ravelle, had the honor of attempting to trim the locks of a squirmy one year old, while simultaneously trying not to gouge his eye with the pointy end of her shears. Sounds like fun right? We started out by giving him a food pouch, which actually worked really well for about 30 seconds until he had sucked it all down. After that it was a lot of coaxing and trying to get him to watch Sesame Street on my phone until I realized I knew exactly what he would hold still for. Adam Levine. He is my child after all. So, I turned on the music video for Maroon 5-Sugar and he got in the hair cut zone. Hallelujah! I'll try to start with that one next time.

I did my best to take pictures, but Samson won't hold still for anything these days. His hair cut was so cute, I had forgotten all about how I cried at just the thought of cutting it the night before. How did he grow up so fast?! It's amazing to me how I spent so much time memorizing every detail of him as a new baby and he's grown and changed so quickly, yet so subtly over the past year, now suddenly before me is a little boy. I swear my heart gets bigger every single day.

Favorites : Ten - Twelve

I've been meaning to post this for quite some time.. but I've officially got the first year of baby favorites covered now.

Ubbi Tweat Snack Container - How cute is this snack container? It has a flip top lid that is easy for Samson to open, but stays shut in the diaper bag. Inside it has a removable ring of soft flaps (similar to other snack cups) that keep snacks in and Cash's nose out.

Imaginarium Stacking Rings - We got this wooden stacking ring toy for Samson for Christmas and he plays with it every day. I've had a lot of fun finding wooden alternatives to plastic toys. The bright colored rings are the perfect size for little hands. Samson loves to carry them around and stack them up.

Plan Toys Walker - Another awesome wooden toy alternative that we have found. Samson's favorite thing about this Van walker is the space for storing all his toys (future shopping cart lover here.) You can adjust the tension of the wheels and the height of the handle to accommodate your kiddos abilities. Plan Toys is an awesome company that practices world class sustainability that you can read about here.

Boon Creatures Bath Toys - Boon makes the best bath toys! These are colorful, fun to stack, and have fun holes that pour out water. They dry out easily, which makes them a breeze to keep clean.

That's Not My Panda - These touch-and-feel Useborn books are still some of Samson's favorites. Samson's Great-Grandma G supplies him with these books that he loves so much.

Old Navy Flannel Shirt - Good grief, there is nothing more cute than seeing your baby dress up like a little man. Aaron wears flannel shirts all the time and it was due time that Samson got one of his own. We got this one for him a few months ago for our family pictures and it's on sale now!

Old Navy Trapper Hat - We got this hat for Samson back in October and we love it. I mean, it's adorable. He looks like a little lumbar jack when he wears it (and it happened to work perfectly for his Halloween costume). It's one of our favorite hats because the chin strap helps keep it firmly on his head on a cold, blustery day. Also on sale now!

Playtex Sippy Cups - These were one of the first hard spout sippy cups that we purchased for Samson. I know that professionals recommend you give your baby straw cups or regular cups since sippy cups require the same sucking action as nursing from a bottle. However, you can't beat the leak-proof quality and ease of cleaning that these sippy cups allow. We save straws and regular cups for meal times and pack these sippy cups in the diaper bag etc. These are SO easy to clean with just one silicone valve and a one piece lid. These are some of the more leak-proof sippy cups we have.

Cloth Diapers : What We Really Think

Samson was about 8 weeks old, when I got brave and decided to snap on one of the cloth diapers. We've been using cloth diapers for quite some time now and we've learned a lot along the way. People often ask me if we still use cloth diapers or they act shocked that we are still using them (often with heavily cynical voices). Bottom line: we love it or we're crazy enough to not hate it. Second bottom line: we aren't quite all in, but we're committed to what works for us. Third bottom line: we are saving loads of money.

Diaper Choice : Charlie Banana One Size Pocket Diapers. Two thumbs up. The fit is great, the style is great, they come with two sizes of inserts, the elastic on the back holds in all the poop. Zero blow outs so far... but never say never. (We've had several blow-outs in disposables). I definitely recommend them. We have 19 diapers, which cost us $215 out of pocket. I can't even begin to stress how good of a deal that is... $215 for the diapers Samson will wear for 2+ years! I'm thinking about investing in some new inserts though (not in love with microfiber, what do YOU use? Please let me know!)

Diaper Pail/Bags : At home, we keep a regular lidded trash can in the bathroom next to Samson's room with the diaper sprayer. Holds in smells okay, keeps the grossness contained & is very easy to clean. On the go, we use Planet Wise and Itzy Rizy wet bags. Both hold in smells and grossness exceptionally well. I've stashed a massively dirty diaper in the diaper bag after a mid-church diaper change and no-one was the wiser. Impressed.

Diaper Sprayer : Bumkins cloth diaper sprayer. Do you need one? ~~Yes~~ No. Should you get one? Yes. Definitely yes. I jumped the gun on using the cloth diapers before we actually got the sprayer installed. So for a while we dunked and swished. Honestly, it wasn't that bad, but considering that we had a sprayer just anxiously waiting to fulfill it's poop cleansing purpose, it was kind of undesirable. The spray is adjustable and easy to control. I feel like the diapers and inserts get clean much easier with a little pre-rinse.

Detergent : We started out with a bag of Rockin' Green courtesy of my cousin Jess. I ran out before I had re-ordered so I did some quick research to find an inexpensive cloth diaper safe detergent in-store near me. I bought a huge jug of ECOS Free & Clear laundry detergent from Target. I'm smitten. I use it on diapers and all of our clothes. I love that it's liquid, which for whatever reason is more appealing to me.

Wash Routine : For reference, we have this washer and this dryer, which I highly recommend. Also, I do a cycle with HOT water which isn't recommended for Charlie Banana diapers. However, ensuring that my diapers are clean with as few chemicals as possible is more important to me than voiding a warranty, so make sure you educate yourself on your own particular brand of diapers before you commit to any routine.

It took a lot of trial and error to get to this point. This is about 2 hours worth of washing and 1 hour of drying. It might seem like a lot of water, but keep in mind we have an energy efficient machine. We haven't noticed any change in our water bill because we are still using well below the minimum usage fee.

2. Quick Wash - Heavy - Hot Water - Line 1 ECOS Free & Clear
3. Normal Cycle - Heavy - Warm Water - Line 1 ECOS Free & Clear - 2 T OxiClean Free & Clear
4. Rinse with Aqua Jet - Cold Water
5. Timed dry - Very Low - 60 minutes, or we line dry outside when the weather is nice.

Disposables : Yep, still use them. I always have some in the diaper bag and in the back of the car. I try to pack one cloth diaper in the diaper bag, but if we are out for an extended period of time, I prefer not to carry around a bag of dirty diapers. To each his own. We use disposable diapers every night and we still using disposable wipes every diaper change. If I had to estimate we use about 2 disposable diapers a day...we use The Honest Co. diapers and wipes, and love them. I highly recommend their products and their subscription service. As a busy mom, there is nothing better. They send reminder emails to select diaper designs and adjust your delivery date as necessary. You can adjust your delivery rate (more often or less often) and a sales rep for The Honest Co, says they can even split your bundle if you think your baby is in between sizes (or uses larger diapers at night for more absorbency.) Overall, we are happy with our choice. Cloth diapering wasn't even on my radar until I was pregnant and observing the mommas around me. And cloth diapering wasn't on Aaron's radar until I told him we should cloth diaper Samson. There are some days I feel a little crazy but, it feels good to spend less on monthly expenses, to produce less waste, to put something gentle on my baby's skin, and to pat that cute fluffy cloth diaper bum.

The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

Every time I make my chocolate chip cookies, someone asks for the recipe. I most recently made these to take to some of our friends and a few our neighbors and realized that this would be a great recipe to share. Now I'm not promising that this is an Emily West original, but I also can't remember where this particular recipe came from, because I don't have a written recipe that I follow. It's one of my favorites that I just keep tucked in my mind. Also, I can ensure you that this is full of gluten and dairy and sugar, because that's what good things in life are made from. While I'm definitely no food blogger, this is a recipe I feel confident sharing because I know you will love it and I know that you'll probably never want a regular chocolate chip cookie again.

Brown Butter Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 large eggs

1 heaping cup milk chocolate chips

1 heaping cup dark chocolate chips (I use Private Selection dark chocolate chunks)

Sea Salt for topping

First, you need to brown the butter. This is the most important part. Don't screw it up. If you don't know how to brown butter, this video is helpful. After you brown the butter, pour it into a bowl to cool. Use a rubber scraper to get all the brown flecks out of the pan into the bowl (that's the best part.) Don't proceed with mixing until the butter is no longer hot to the touch.

While waiting for the butter to cool, I typically measure and sift my flour, baking soda and salt and set aside in a bowl. Then I measure out my chocolate chips and set them aside in a separate bowl. Finally, I measure the sugars and vanilla extract into my stand mixer bowl so I'm ready to go when the butter is cool. It makes a few extra dirty dishes, but it does make the cookie dough making efficient.

Once the butter is no longer hot, pour it into mixing bowl with the sugars and vanilla extract, using a rubber scraper to transfer all of the brown flecks. Mix on low speed until combined. Next, add the eggs. Then, slowly add the dry ingredients. Once the dough is thoroughly combined, add the chocolate pieces. I recommend doing this by hand to prevent the chocolate from breaking. Cover and freeze for 30 minutes or refrigerate for 1+ hours.

After the dough has been chilled, preheat the oven to 375˚, scoop the dough into balls and place on to cookie sheet. The bigger the better, in my opinion. Bake for 8-11 minutes, to your liking. I always err on the side of less done, because the cookies will continue to cook a bit on the baking sheet after removed them from the oven. Just before transferring cookies to a cooling rack, sprinkle with sea salt.

Samson : 1 year

Age : 1 year ... the fastest 12 months of my life, which is why I always have had trouble getting to these monthly updates in time. I'm not kidding guys, I'm pretty sure I've got gray hairs now. #motherhood

Height : 32" ... maybe? Samson hasn't his 13 month appointment yet, so this isn't official by any means.

Weight : 24 lbs. Future football player, for sure.

Clothes : 12-18 months, size 5 shoes

Diapers : Charlie Banana Cloth (Size M), Honest Diapers Size 4.

Eating : Table food and whole milk. No more bottles for this guy. We started dropping bottles as soon as he turned one and transitioned off of them pretty quickly. The last (and hardest) bottle to eliminate was the mid-afternoon one, but Samson must have decided one day that milk from a straw cup was good enough & that was that.

Sleeping : Not the greatest. We got used to Samson putting himself to sleep and soothing himself back to sleep if he woke in the middle of the night. Everything changed when tooth #1 arrived. We worked really hard to get Samson back to sleeping through the night, then tooth #2 came and messed things up again. But, he slept 7p-7a last night, so I can't seem to find any reason to complain today ;)

Pacifiers/Soothies : Still relying on MAM pacifiers and I'm not sure that any of us are willing to give those up anytime soon. He loves his mint blankie, but has recently started preferring the throw blanket we keep on the glider in his nursery, which is way too big for him to sleep through the night with.

Milestones : 1st tooth and 2nd tooth came about 1 month apart. Tooth #1 came the same day Samson started walking (just after 11 months) and the 2nd came about a week after his birthday. Walking and/or running. Baby headstands. Can "play" the kazoo and recorder (thanks Grandma & Grandpa West). First Christmas and first birthday just weeks apart meant lots of opening presents.

Likes : Chasing Cash, playing fetch with Cash, snuggling in between momma & daddy, watching music videos (specifically Maroon 5-Sugar and Bruno Mars-Uptown Funk), helping daddy play guitar, clapping, making noise with the kazoo and recorder, walking everywhere, hugs (the BEST hugger), applesauce, black beans and most importantly crackers.

Dislikes : Diaper changes. Getting HANGRY. Skipping nap time.

Disclaimer : Getting this one done with just days to spare before Samson is 13 months. It is next to impossible to get pictures of Samson (sitting still, without a pacifier) now that he is walking, so I've had to give up on that cute monthly montage, but I'll fill the void with a few action shots!

Samson : 11 months

Age : 11 months ... I have to back track a bit, because we've had a pretty busy month!

Height : 31" (ish)

Weight : 22 lbs (ish) ... He feels likes a bag of bricks!

Clothes : 12-18 months

Diapers : Charlie Banana Cloth (Size M), Honest Diapers Size 3, although the next bundle will have size 4 diapers because we're having trouble with night time diapers holding enough.

Eating : So much! He still loves bottles, but we are down to 6 oz/3x a day. Loves all food.

Sleeping : Samson had a bit of sleep regression with his first cold (and his first tooth, but that's for next month's post) so he sleeps 7:30-6:00 right now, but wakes up a a few times a night. It's rough for every one involved. Thankfully, he goes back to sleep easily and naps really well during the day. (And FYI, as of right now, more than halfway to 12 months he's getting back to the awesome sleep that we we're used to).

Pacifiers/Soothies : Loves his MAM pacifiers and we always panic when they all seem to get lost at the same time. He sleeps with his mint blankie at nap time and night time. Thankfully travels pretty well at night now as long as we pack his beloved blankie.

Milestones : Walking around furniture, chatting up a storm even if nobody, including Samson, knows what he is saying (distinguishable words: papa, mama, baba, papa), clapping.

Likes : Playing with other kids, sharing, tickles, playing with Cash, long walks in the stroller, books, all sorts of noisy toys, drinking from straws and cups.

Dislikes : Diaper changes, I'm telling you... it's the end of the world!

Holiday Spirit

The count down to Christmas is on! We've already watched a few of our favorite holiday movies and made a few of our favorite holiday treats, but what we're really excited for this year is Samson! Last year we were anxiously awaiting his arrival and couldn't even imagine what having a little boy crawling around the Christmas tree this year would look like. Samson decided to up the ante a bit for us by reaching a few exciting milestones during this very special season.

Last Friday, after sustaining an accidental boo-boo courtesy of his furry brother Cash, Samson decided to turn everyone's frown upside down by taking his first steps! I was on the phone with my mom when I set him down, he stood right up and walked straight to me, arms up and ready for a hug! I'm pretty sure I melted in to a big, proud, emotional momma puddle.

Walking solo wasn't the only exciting thing Samson had in mind though. This morning, I went to pick him up from his crib after his nap when I noticed his big gummy smile had a little something extra to it... his first tooth!

We had a few fun props that were left over from a Christmas party we had for the student workers in Aaron's office last week. I thought they would be perfect for our little elf and his trusty side kick. Taking pictures of Samson and Cash is hard enough... add sparkly hat (or antlers) and it's a whole new struggle. However, the out takes themselves are funny enough, hope you get a kick out of them :)

Christmas Wish List

So we have really lucked out in regards to not be bogged down with too many toys or baby things. Part of that might be that Samson is still young, part of that might be that he has a lot of cousins so my mom and dad don't feel obligated to buy him all the things, and part of it might be that I've been trying to adapt the phrase "quality not quantity." Just don't look in the guest room closets... or the attic. Seriously, don't.

It's Samson's first Christmas and he is at such a great age to enjoy it. Opening presents, playing with new toys, and pulling all the ornaments off the tree is all going to be epic fun for our little stinker. We hope Samson grows up to know plenty fun family traditions that really impress on him the magic of Christmas. And since we really, really want to impress on him the absolute JOY that Christmas is really about celebrating the birth of our Savior, we hope that we can keep Santa Claus in check. Something he wants, something he needs, something to wear, something to read. Plus, a few fun extras :)

Lollaland Lollacup - One of the cutest sippy cups I've seen. Samson loves straws now and I think the weighted straw would help since he is always tipping his cup. I love the built in lid for tossing it in the diaper bag.

Footed Pajamas - Samson is about to grow out of his 12 month jammies, we're in need of a 18 month stock up around here. Bonus points for animal feet!

Converse Chuck Taylors - Since Samson is getting ready to walk he needs some shoes for when we are out and about. We just picked these up at the mall this weekend and they are SO cute. I can't wait until he wears them!

Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Phone - I don't know how much longer we can hold out on toys that make noise, Samson loves playing with them when we go down the toy aisle. Plus, maybe he'll stop snatching our iPhones (here's to wishing!)

BabyLit Sherlock Holmes and The Jungle Book - Books are in surprising short supply around here. BabyLit books are twists on stories that use various subjects like colors, shapes, and sounds to introduce little readers to classic literature. Samson loves playing with books and being read to. These would be great books to add to our collection.

Fisher Price Classic Toy Xylophone - Looks just like the Fisher Price toys I had as a kid! Samson loves playing with Aaron's guitars and I bet he's going to love making some music of his own.

B. Zany Zoo Activity Cube - I have been eyeing this toy for Samson before he was even born. He is the perfect age for it now and is old enough to really like playing with all the different activities.

Imaginarium Stacking Rings - Samson is really getting in to stacking... and knocking things over (and putting things in, taking things out... the boy loves both order and chaos). I'm trying SO hard to keep our house as free from the onslaught of shiny plastic toys for as long as possible. If there is an option for a wooden toy, sign us up.

I'm hoping we can make something for Samson this year too. This mama loves a good project and I'm pretty sure that Aaron actually enjoys helping with my crazy ideas and plans. I think that would be a fun tradition to establish ... homemade is really special if you ask me. I'm dreaming of finally getting around to making that teepee we've been talking about for a year now. A little something like this one from House of Jade interiors would look great in the playroom.

Clothes : 12-18 months. We recently went on a shopping spree to replace some of his smaller clothes and I went with the next size up, so they are a bit big on him.

Diapers : Charlie Banana, 1st medium setting. Size 3 Honest diapers.

Eating : 6 oz/4x a day. He loves to have breakfast, lunch, dinner and occasionally snacks with Aaron and I.

Sleeping : 7p-6a. Nap time has been shifting a little bit lately. Some days its a 2 hour nap before lunch time, some days it's an hour nap before lunch and dinner.

Pacifiers/Soothies : MAM pacifiers (down to 1, we keep losing them!) and green blankie at nap time and night time.

Milestones : Crawling, super fast, with his belly off the ground, says "ma-ma" and "pa-pa" now (pretty sure he means puppy), first night being put to sleep by grandma and grandpa when Aaron & I were out of town for my best friend's wedding, started throwing with pretty awesome accuracy, dressed up like a lumbar jack for his first Halloween, and got to eat lasagna for the first time.

Likes : Trying new foods, sharing his toys with Cash, sharing his pacifier with Aaron & I, being outside, throwing, peek-a-boo, shoe strings, tags, furry stuffed animals (or Cash), bath time, Sesame Street.

Dislikes : Playtime interrupted by diaper changes, when the remote gets taken from him, the stairs being barricaded with a baby gate, being prevented from doing anything detrimental to his well-being (Boys!)

Non-Slip Socks - When the weather started getting cooler, socks became a more regular outfit staple for our typically barefoot boy. Non-slip socks can make the difference between tiny feet safely walking the perimeter of the room while holding walls/furniture or sliding and crashing down. Samson was in need of a sock upgrade and we made sure to get the slip resistant variety.

Plum Organics Pouches - While I typically make homemade purees and Samson eats a lot of finger food, sometimes nothing can top the convenience of ready made baby food. We always have a pouch in the diaper bag and several stashed in the pantry for any sudden outbursts of hangry. For beginning eaters, squirt food on to a spoon for meal time and the pouch can be resealed and kept in the fridge between meals. For more independent babies the pouch can be given directly to little hands. Simple ingredients, easy to read label. A win.

Nuby Sippy Cup - This was one of the first sippy cups we tried for Samson. While we are getting ready to transition to some hard topped sippy cups and cups with straws now, this was a great introduction sippy cup. We skipped over the first nipple like top and went straight to the spout. It has been dropped and chucked from the high chair and stroller with minimal leaks. I like that it has a cap, so it can be tossed in the diaper bag for on-the-go use. The handles make it easy to use for little hands. Definitely recommend it.

That's Not My Goat - Samson is obsessed with this book. Aaron's family came over several weekends ago and Aaron's grandma brought this for Samson. It was the first time he unwrapped a present, which he went crazy over, and the first time he really cared one bit about a touch-and-feel book. Now it's pretty much the only book he is interested in. His favorite page is a definite tie between the rough nose (velcro hooks) and the fluffy beard (faux fur) which he insists on trying to put in his mouth.

Graco Convertible Car Seat - I didn't like this seat at first. It was easy (for Aaron) to install but, no matter how I adjusted it I just didn't feel like Samson was secure. Now we have the infant inserts removed and the non-rethread harness at level 1 and I finally feel like he is safe when he's in his seat. The seat itself is a great design and Samson loves the built in cup-holder for stashing his stuff. It has a rapid remove cover which I'm sure will come in handy as some point. You're able to machine wash the cover without uninstalling the car seat. Perfect for a messy boy! I did a lot of research online prior to going car seat shopping, but when it came down to it, my top picks (Britax Marathon, Maxi Cosi Pria and Peg Perego Primo Viaggio) were just a little out of budget since we wanted to buy two seats. Maybe not my top pick, but a good contender if you're looking for a budget conscious seat.

Jersey Leggings - Old Navy is a super convenient store for us and we shop there often. They often have great sales and deals (Super Cash) which keeps us going back. These pants fit really well and are super soft and comfortable. I'm not a huge fan of baggy/loose pants on Samson, so these are a good substitute for casual pants for a little boy without crossing the too-tight threshold. When cooler Indiana weather arrived, I needed an alternative to onesies and rompers for a comfy, no-fuss outfit. We may or may not have these in almost every color.

Summer Infant Silicone Bib - Skip all the other bibs (actually don't skip these if you have a newborn) which are impossible to get clean quickly. After a meal or snack I snap this off Samson, rinse it off in the sink and let it dry. I wash it thoroughly every night after dinner. No seams, no crevices, no stains, no left over mess.

Bright Starts Teething Rings - Although Samson still has NO teeth, he's been teasing us for months. Right now he doesn't seem to have a preference whether these are room temperature or fresh from the fridge. But, I'm sure when he really does start working on teeth he'll really love them. For now, he likes carrying them around and gnawing on the textured surface. Super cheap and cost effective.

Milestones : Crawling all over the place, pulling himself up everywhere, taking little steps holding on to furniture, climbing up the stairs, lots of chatter: the only distinguishable things we hear are "dada" and "baba," his first boo-boo (fell and hit his noggin on the sliding glass door), and transitioned into his big boy car seat.

Likes : Feeding himself and concurrently flinging food from his highchair, strings and tags, shutting all the doors, playing with the doorstops, leaves, pulling himself up to look out the window with Cash, and gleefully shouting as Cash barks at the end of the day when dad comes home.

Dislikes : Being still... we've taken a break from weekly pictures for the time being, being protected from major catastrophe like crawling up the stairs, crawling off the couch, etc., and being stuck in his jumper, pack & play or car seat when he'd rather be exploring.

Hello Fall

This week we said goodbye to summer and said hello to fall. In honor of the changing seasons, Samson's nap times have changed and he went from five bottles a day to four, without too much difficulty. However, in a cranky moment pre-naptime on Monday, he head-butted my face and surprised me with a bloody nose. How sweet. He stayed up TWO hours past his bed time on Tuesday, just so he could watch The Voice. By Wednesday, we were ready for an extended morning with Aaron before he had a late evening of travel to Ohio, and then got lucky enough for grandma & grandpa to come by for dinner. Samson was extra sweet for grandpa and fell asleep for him in just a few minutes. Today after Aaron left for work, I ventured out with Samson & Cash to soak up some of this beautiful weather. I picked up a new Toasted Graham Latte from Starbucks and we all went to the park for a walk. I know I say this often, but this is my favorite baby stage yet. Samson is so much fun and he loves exploring, especially with his brother Cash by his side.

Eating : 6.5 oz/5x a day, 2-3 "meals" a day. Loves: puffs, yogurt, apples, bananas, and pumpkin. Hates: spinach.

Sleeping : Goes to sleep at 7:30 p, wakes up at 7:00 a. Some nights he wakes up several times, but on good nights he wakes up once & goes back to sleep easily. Takes a 90 minute nap in the morning and one to two shorter naps in the afternoon. He's getting better about napping in his crib now that we have given him a blanket to snuggle.

Pacifiers/Soothies : MAM pacifiers and a mint green knit blanket at nap time & bed time.

Milestones : Crawling better every day, standing, saying "da-da," "ba-ba," and lots of babble (no ma-ma yet!), pulling himself up to stand from a seated position, napping more often in his crib. Can I get an Amen!?

Likes : Being on the move. Rubbing soft blankets against his face. Snuggling just about anyone, favorites are always mommy & daddy. Playing with Cash and his toys. Trying to chew on everyone's shoes (and feet). Eating food of almost any variety, but finger foods are his favorite... and the messiest. Playing outside in the grass and going on adventures in the stroller.

Dislikes : Spinach, sometimes I can sneak a tiny bit in to a big bowl of fruit puree. Laying still for diaper changes. Being told "no-no," he obviously just ignores us. Hanging out for long periods on his own when it's obvious that someone should be holding him ;)

Happy Baby Happy Puffs - With the exception of the occasional sliver of fresh fruit/veggies I give to Samson when I'm making his baby food, these are the first "solid" he has eaten. At first, he was not interested at all. We gave him a few weeks before we tried them again and it was amazing to see him chew them right up. I sometimes forget that he is always watching and always learning. He likes feeding himself like a big boy, I like that they are natural and organic, Cash likes that he chucks them off the high chair tray at every meal. Winner.

Munchkin Disposable Changing Pads - We were gifted a few boxes of these at various baby showers before Samson was born. Our diaper bag has a built-in changing pad, which until recently we used for all our out of the house diaper changes. I got a sweet new mom car and have a special spot in the back of the "trunk" that is dedicated to on-the-go diaper changes. I have these stashed with an back-up supply of diapers & wipes so that I am always prepared. These are so handy and help keep things nice & clean.

Infantino Cow Teether - We all know and love Sophie the Giraffe, but this cow is just as fun! It's soft and squeeky, just like the teether by Vulli. As far as I can tell, Samson is nowhere near getting any teeth, but he loves chewing on these teether toys. It's a bit less expensive than Sophie, and if you'd rather, there are other animals to choose from.

MAM Night Pacifiers - Glow in the dark pacifiers. Life savers. Almost all of of middle of the night wake up calls are due to a lost pacifier. We've learned to keep a few pacifiers in the nursery just in case, but when the lights are out, we need all the help we can get. Even if you have to get on your hands and knees and dig for it under the crib in the middle of the night to retrieve it. Most brands have them, but these are Samson's favorite pacifiers.

Old Navy Jammies - These are hands down our favorite pajamas right now. Samson is tall and slim and these manage to fit him really well. He's wearing the 6-9 month size right now and still has plenty of room to grow in them. The fabric is really soft and breathable, which helps our sweaty little guy from getting too hot. They stand up nicely to stains and stain remover (LOTS of experience here). They have built in mittens, which are awesome for newborns, but I'd imagine they would be nice for older babies too in cooler weather. The down side is all the snaps. Heavens, I'm getting good at snapping while Samson wiggles and rolls, but would a zipper wouldn't hurt.

The Honest Company Diapers - We use cloth diapers all day long, but we love having disposable diapers on hand too. We recently switched to Honest Co. diapers and we have been really happy with them. Samson wears a disposable diaper to bed every night, we keep a few in the diaper bag and always have an emergency stash in the car. They are super absorbent and they hold in as much odor as any other diaper. We love that they are made with safe/gentle products, which compliment our cloth diaper routine really well. They are reasonably priced when compared to other name brand diapers, they are super cute and they are delivered straight to our door ya'll. Love them.

O Ball Rattle & Roll Car - A gift from his cousin Annalyn, this car is one of Samson's toys. It's easy for him to pick up and play with. It makes lots of fun noises, the best sounds of course come when it's thrown from his high chair or accidentally smacks it against mommy or daddy's face. Wild child.

Little Blue Truck - I love reading this book to Samson. Plenty of rhyming and animal noises keep him slightly more interested in listening to me read than gumming on the pages. However, it's a board book and it can definitely stand up to his drooling and toothless-chewing. Plus, it teaches valuable life lessons like how you shouldn't be a jerk. Hopefully, he listens. We're trying to raise a Godly little boy here guys.

Samson : 7 months

As of last week, Samson is actually 8 months old. In true procrastinator style, I wrote this update a little more than a month ago & then took the next 6 weeks to add the pictures. Hopefully, I won't wait another month to get caught up on things, because Samson is doing some pretty amazing things that need to be documented!

Age : 7 months

Height : 28" (this is a guess!)

Weight : 17 1/2 lbs (ish)

Clothes : 3-6 months & 6-9 months

Diapers : Charlie Banana cloth diapers and Honest Co. disposable diapers in size 3.

Eating : 6.5 oz/5x a day… and anything he can get in his mouth. Usually has 2 “meals” of about 2.5 oz of homemade fruit/veggie purees a day and some puffs to snack on.

Sleeping : Not nearly as awesome as before. Still goes down at 7:30, but wakes up a few times before Aaron & I go to bed and then usually once more before we wake up. A nice long nap in the morning is followed by a shorter one in the early afternoon. Periodically, he takes a mini-nap about the time Aaron gets home from work. It is next to impossible to get him to nap in his crib though... so he usually ends up relaxing in our bed while I read or check on some blogs.

Pacifiers : Back to the MAM pacifiers because he loves holding on to the little button on the front. Side note: if you are the parent of an infant who likes to chuck their pacifier out the side of the crib in the middle of the night, get some glow in the dark pacifiers, they are life savers!

Likes : Snuggling mommy and daddy. Eating in any capacity. Long walks in the stroller. A breeze in his hair. Taking toys out of his toy basket and putting them back in (he does this all.day.long). Playing with Cash. Playing with Cash's toys. Crawling every where, specifically under things like his crib and the coffee table. Cords and outlets (scary). Playing with mommy's hair and daddy's beard. Bath time in the big boy tub.

Dislikes : Other babies, birds, tasting Cash's dog toys (so gross), when momma can't keep it together & make his bottles right this second, being dressed and being changed because he's being held back from crawling all over the place, loud noises when he's tired (this includes laughing), and ever since he started taking baths in the big bath tub, the first 2 minutes of bath time typically elicit some big cries.

Becoming a six month old is a big deal. Samson can check off all the boxes on the long list of accomplishments the pediatrician will tell you to watch for. We are so proud of every milestone he reaches & we gladly cheer him on & coax him to the next one. However, I'm still in total disbelief that we are halfway to having a one year old! It feels as if Samson has been a part of our lives forever, but it also just feels like he just got here! Time just blurs together, managing to both crawl & speed by in the blink of an eye. But, I wanted to pause it for just a moment & capture some of the sweetness to hold on to. In honor of his half birthday I snapped some pictures of Samson, aka Sam, aka SamBam, aka SammerJammer, aka Baby Bear, aka Squirrel (he has daddy to thank for thank one), aka Cash's brother, aka he cutest baby who ever lived. Without further adieu...

Fox – Stuffed animals are definitely Samson’s favorite toys at the moment. I honestly think it’s because they mimic Cash’s fur but are less likely to move away when he starts chewing on them. This fox was a gift from my friend Holli, and Samson has loved it for months. The black and white face provide ample amounts of contrast, while it’s life sized shape have proven to be the perfect cuddle size. It’s so sweet looking and is a nice compliment to his nursery full of moose.

Fresh Baby Trays – So far, I’ve made all of the fruits and veggies that Samson has eaten. I assure you it isn’t as daunting as it may seem. I just put the prepared food in my regular blender (not a baby bullet, not a Ninja, not a Vitamix… just a plain old Oster brand blender) and then pour it in these trays, cover and put them in the freezer. Once the food is frozen, I put it in a labeled Ziploc bag and put it back in the freezer. I can’t take credit for discovering these, I just happened to be visiting my brother & sister-in-law at their new home a few months ago when she sent these home with me. However, I really enjoy using them. There is no need for measuring or precision pouring, I just dump the food in the middle & use a rubber spatula (or scraper if that’s what you call them) to spread the food into all of the cubes. So easy!

Sunglasses – Protecting little eyes from UV radiation, assisting stroller naps and looking cool at the same time. Fantastic. Get them in every color. ;)

Hello Ninja– I love reading to Samson and so far all he loves is gnawing on the books, but this was a fun book to add to our (still measly) collection. We often referred to Samson-in-utero as a little ninja because of the quick kicks and jabs he would deliver and also because of our growing fascination with the TV show American Ninja Warrior, so now it’s fun to help him become accustomed to the ninja ways of life. This book moonlights as a bedtime story, so it’s almost always on our reading list.

Oball Teether – I’m really drawn to this brand. I love the bright colors that they use and the little beads that they use make the coolest (least annoying) noise. While these keys don’t have the brands token beads, the do have bright colors and cool textures for Samson to gnaw on and the key ring seems to be the right size and shape for his little hands. So far there are no signs of teeth, but everything goes in his mouth anyways. Samson gives them bonus points for making a cool sound when he drops them from the highchair tray twenty times at dinner.

Jumperoo – Hands down one of the most used baby items we own. We have a smaller doorway jumper that is easy to move around, but for day-to-day use this one is definitely our favorite. Besides being great for jumping, it has lots for Samson to look at and play with. We usually don’t turn the sound on, because he seems to like it just fine without it and the days of quiet play are truly numbered when you have a boy. Downsides : big size makes it more difficult to move from room to room and it takes up a great-deal of floor space.

B. One Two Squeeze Blocks – Samson was really starting to take an interest in the wooden blocks that my friend Rachel had made for him, however, since he’s still a little guy, I cringed every time he accidentally dropped one on his face or poked himself in the eye with sharp corner. These soft blocks were the perfect solution. They are the perfect size for little fingers and all 6 sides of each block have a raised image for exploring. They make a small squeak for interest, but not enough to be confused as a dog toy, which is an important quality in our house.

Boon Highchair – I know there are a hundred different highchairs out there to choose from, and honestly, I’m not sure you can go wrong with any of them. I do love our highchair though. It is SO easy to clean (zero crevices or hard to reach places). It’s easy to adjust the height (it has a pneumatic lift, like a hair dressers chair, but easier). It’s on easy-to-glide wheels and it has a one-step brake. Plus, it looks like it belongs to the Jetson’s. Win.

Samson : 6 Months

Clothes : 3-6 months, some 6-9 months

Diapers : We use cloth diapers almost full-time. However, for night time (because no matter how much I stuff them, I can’t keep him dry for 12 hours) and longer trips away from home (a diaper bag full of dirty cloth diapers isn’t my favorite thing) we use size 3 up&up. I just bought some Honest diapers to try out, I’ll let you know how I like them.

Eating : 6.5 oz/5 x a day, and an assortment of homemade fruit and vegetable purees. Usually 2 oz/2 x a day.

Sleeping : 7:30pm-7:30 am, and usually two 1½ hour naps.

Pacifiers : We switched from 0-6 month mam pacifiers to 6+ month Latch pacifiers (what we had on hand) and so far so good. They seem a little easier to keep clean, with fewer crevices for things to get trapped. The clear middle of the Latch pacis are weird, but strangely endearing.

Likes : Snuggling things right next to his face while sleeping, which terrifies me & I do everything I can to prevent him from accidentally suffocating, but the boy loves to snuggle. Which is directly related to another item on this list: Nap time with mommy is a favorite activity for the both of us. Sweet Potatoes are hands down his favorite food, but he still will turn down food in favor of his bottle. He is absolutely fascinated with the silkie tags on all of his toys. Chewing on 2 fingers at a time is at a dead even tie for chewing on his feet. Being outdoors is one of his favorite things & he is his most content going for walks in the stroller or sitting in the yard with Cash. He loves laughing with daddy.. Who can make him giggle & scream better than anyone. And finally, pulling mommy's hair and spitting up all over daddy.

Dislikes : 6 month shots probably top his list of least favorite things this month. Followed closely by eating vegetables that aren't mixed with apples or sweet potatoes (butternut squash, green beans... the horror!) Being tucked into the mamaroo, the highchair or even the jumperoo instead of being held by mommy all.day.long. Sippy cups. Anything he can't chew on. Water on his face (not to be confused with rain or a shower because he loves those). Getting an arm or a leg stuck out of his crib. And finally, the blender a.k.a. Samson's arch nemesis.

Every time I sit down to type out these monthly updates several thoughts cross my mind : 1. No way this much time has passed 2. How on earth did my baby get this big? 3. It's a good thing I keep track of these moments somewhere because I am definitely not one of those typical "baby-booking" first time moms 4. YOU GUYS, I have the cutest baby on the planet, I want to tell you ALL about him ;)

So, 5 months old. This month has seen a lot of good nights of sleep, a lot of questionable nap times, lots of giggles and even more exploring. It gets more and more fun daily! Over the past month, we've introduced Samson to food (one kind a week because I make it myself & I'm too lazy for more than that). He becomes more mobile as the days pass, he can roll and scoot with the best of them. He's got his own version of "crawling" down, which I'm fairly certain is going to result in rug burn on his forehead soon. He is a bed-time all-star and a nap-time rookie. He loves to be surprised, play peek-a-boo and chase Cash around the house. If he's crying, he'll almost always settle down for a big, wet smooch from his furry brother or some time outside.

Height : 26 1/2 " (ish)

Weight : 17 lbs (ish)

Clothes : 3-6 months and a few 6-9 months. They are big on him, but I thought I'd rather buy more clothes for him to grow into... you can call me a thrifty mom ;)

Diapers : Charlie Bananas during the day, and size 3 up & up diapers at night time. We sized up his diapers for volume, not size. He's still a little string bean!

Eating : 6.5 oz/5 x a day, rice cereal and homemade baby food once or twice a day (so far : bananas, avocado, sweet potato, apples, next up: butternut squash!)

Sleeping : 7:30pm-7am, nap time is totally suspect these days. Mr. Busy Body wants nothing to do with naps unless he is in the carseat or stroller.

Pacifiers : MAM pacifiers and his fingers and/or whatever stuffed animal he can get his hands on.

Likes : Playing with Cash, books and stuffed animals, playing with mommy & daddy, going for walks, being outside, jumping in the bouncer, bath time

Dislikes : Napping in his crib, being strapped down in any capacity, dirty diapers, eating food when he's really hungry for a bottle, catching a glimpse of himself crying in the mirror... the travesty!

Rub A Dub Dub

Samson has a long list of favorite things and bath time is definitely one of them. Until recently, I was doing bath time during the day, but Samson was really showing us he wanted an (early) bedtime routine. So out came the sleepy-time bubble bath and pajamas. We don't give him a bath every day because 1. He's a baby and doesn't need it 2. Ain't nobody got time for that. (Don't hate me for my pop-culture references).

Anyways, on nights when we don't do a bath, we start with pajamas, bed times stories, bed time prayers and listening to the fan while we rock in the glider in his room. Personally, I thought bed time routines for babies were over rated, until my baby started sleeping 8:30p-7:00a. At 4 months. Sometimes he sleeps until 8:30a, and it is UNREAL. I almost forgot to mention he usually falls asleep in like 2 minutes after his prayers. I'm pretty sure that any future babies will be little hooligans and you'll find me reminiscing on these precious, easy moments with Samson.

Samson : 4 months

Two weeks ago Samson turned four months old, a fact that I still can't believe, yet it must be true because my baby is doing things that only a four month old could do. Last Tuesday, he had his four month check-up. I pre-gamed with some Starbucks, to help soften the blow of vaccinations. It ended up being a good call (is coffee ever a bad call?). After visiting the pediatrician, we ALL were on Team No-Nap, which is the worst kind of team to be on, especially after a morning with vaccinations. We were all so excited when it turned out to be the longest. day. ever. Thankfully, this next day Samson woke up EIGHTEEN weeks old and was finally back to his happy little self.

This month has seen a lot of changes in our baby boy. He has turned into a total chatter box, with his favorite consonant being "G," but ultimately, he will abandon any sort of formal conversation for the back-and-forth of a raspberry blowing competition. Quite the gentleman. The biggest, most exciting milestone this month happened the day after his 4 month birthday. We woke up to find he had rolled over to sleep on his tummy. After weeks of coaching and coaxing and cheering, Samson rolled from his back to his belly without an audience. Kind of anti-climatic. Don't worry though, he's been showing of his new skills ever since. And just to prove he could still throw us for a loop, he started sucking his thumb on Mother's Day while I was at work.

Age : 4 months

Height : 25 3/4"

Weight : 15 lbs 12 oz

Clothes : Still fits in 0-3 months, starting to wear a few 3-6 months

Diapers : Size 2 Pampers, small setting Charlie Bananas

Eating : 6.5 oz/5 x a day

Sleeping : 8:30pm-7am, a long morning nap and a short afternoon nap

Pacifiers : MAM pacifiers and his THUMB

Likes : Eating is first and foremost his favorite activity, doing anything with Cash, bath time, being outside, mirrors, jumping in his bouncer. Samson is almost always happy and content, especially when his brother Cash is around.

Dislikes : Not getting his bottle immediately as soon as the first sign of hunger shows itself, napping in his crib, being put in his car seat, and spit up that comes out of his nose (not fun for anyone). Let's just put it this way, whoever said "happy wife, happy life" obviously doesn't know what it's like to live with an unhappy baby.

Moms, I know we all love to think we have it all together. But, we've all been there... the moment we realize we DON'T have it all figured out. Maybe you realize you left the house with spit up down the front of your shirt, maybe you forgot to pack a bottle for your hungry baby, maybe you left home without re-stocking your diaper bag with it's key item, diapers! Or maybe, you are in the check-out at Target and you discover you have no idea where your wallet is. YES! Yes, to all of those things. They ALL happened to me in the past week. #amateur (Also, #ihatemyselfforusinghashtags, but when it fits, it fits).

Anyways, as you might have gathered from the title of this post, there was another momma out there who had been there. She saw the panic in my eyes and swooped in from her Bat Mobile Town & Country mini van to save the day. A complete stranger paid for my entire Target purchase. I looked like a total fool repeating "I can't believe this, you don't have to do this, thank you so much." And like it was no big deal, she said "I know I don't have to do this, but I've been there."

The experience in itself was amazing, however, there's more. Two days prior at church, a guest pastor was discussing generosity. A verse I had written down to study later was Luke 16:9 "I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings" (NIV). God has blessed us richly. He doesn't bless us so we can stash it all up and make ourselves feel good. He entrusts us with our blessings so we can INVEST them in His people. I don't believe that I received that message and received that woman's gift as a part of some big coincidence. God is alive, my friends, and He is good. Someone invested their blessings in me, now I'm investing in you.
