Some cats are more susceptible to colds than other cats.  The reason is because these cats are usually exposed to other cats.  Whenever you take your cat to the veterinarians, groomers, or board them at the kennel their risk of getting a cold will increase.   The best way to prevent your cat from getting a cold is to keep your cat away from other cats or to limit their exposure.  Another way is

An annual wellness exam will aid in preventing serious illness and thus keep your cat healthy.  Many cat owners take their cats to the veterinarian office when the cat is ill and omits taking the cat for their yearly check up because they think the cat is fine.  A cat could be infected with feline AIDS or Leukemia and in the beginning stages will show no symptoms.  You could prevent your cat

A female cat that is infected with Feline AIDS came to spend the day with Sam. A friend of mine’s is without a home right now so I told her I would watch her cat so she did not have to worry.  AIDS cats have special needs and cannot be left outdoors and they need to live a life that is peaceful with no exposure to healthy cats unless they get along and do not fight.  A stressful situation could

It is time for Sam’s annual wellness check-up and I am not sure if it is wise to subject him to the stress and anxiety of going to the veterinarian.  Last year when he had his annual wellness exam he was overly anxious.  When I brought him home he went in his room to hide and that night he suffered a mild feline stroke .  So I am hesitant in making the appointment for his annual check-up.

If your cat has AIDS or another infectious disease you must be responsible and take precautions to protect other cats from being exposed to your cat. My cat Sam has AIDS and during normal conditions he lives a happy life in my office.  He is away from the other cats and there is no threat of exposure.  However On May 22, 2011 an F5 supercell tornado touched down two blocks from my home and

Caring for a Feline Leukemia cat in a multiple cat home is not an easy task however it is a task that is worth the effort.  Feline Leukemia is a virus called (FeLV) and infected cats spread the virus through saliva, nasal secretions, tears, urine and feces. Feline leukemia is contagious; therefore keep your cats indoors.

Illness strikes AIDS cat:  Image by Sgolis

Mysterious illness made my AIDS cat  violently ill yesterday.  Sam went from healthy and strong cat to vomiting and diarrhea within a matter of minutes.  This mysterious illness has spread to the family dog.  Sam got sick late yesterday afternoon and was sick throughout the night.  I stayed up with him to hydrate him; I filled a six ounce cup with

Adopting a cat that is infected with feline immunodeficiency virus will save the cats life.  There are so many homeless and stray cats that test positive for the antibody for feline immunodeficiency virus however because these cats are strays there is no way of knowing if the cats were vaccinated and thus the blood test could be a false positive.

Cats like humans need water to sustain their health and well being. A cat can skip meals however they need to hydrate their bodies to prevent illness; bladder infection and cysts will occur if the cat is not hydrated. My cat Sam shows no interest in his water in his bowl and I needed to find ways to get him interested in water so

Training a cat to use a scratching post is not easy especially if the said cat is older and set in his ways.  My cat Sam is a kitty that could do no wrong in my eyes.  He was diagnosed with feline leukemia and AIDS and I had intended on spoiling him for the rest of his short life.  I figured he had a year left before I would need to put him

Feline Leukemia (FeLV) is not a death sentence as numerous cats may have a false positive when they are tested.  In many instances rescued, stray or abandoned cats will show a false positive because their previous owners had provided the cat with the vaccine to prevent feline leukemia and the new pet owner or shelter would not be aware of the cat’s history. Thousands of cats die each year

I am happy to report that I see glimpses of my old friend Sam in the back of his big blue eyes. Every day Sam’s energy is increasing and he is getting stronger. Today he played with his tennis ball, and picked up a pen from my desk and placed it his kitty condominium. After that exhausting task, he jumped onto the cat window ledge and took a nap.

Feline Stroke:  Image of Sam by Susan Golis

On Wednesday June 23, Sam went to the veterinarians for his annual wellness check-up; they drew blood and gave him his yearly vaccinations. The veterinarian did a examination on him and reported that he looked good but needed to lose some weight. He said that Sam was a happy cat and was very talkative. We brought him home and Sam was exhausted,

A year ago on this day, Sam the Siamese cat wondered into my yard. He was skin and bones and very hungry. Sam has Feline Leukemia and AIDS and he is symptom free for one year. Therefore, to mark this special occasion, Sam and I spent the day together in the big house.
