The Yorkshire Terrier (nicknamed the “Yorkie”) is an English toy breed of dog which for the most part retains their original terrier instincts and features a silky blue and tan coat that sheds little to no hair as well as a small face with dark eyes, a black nose and perked-up ears that combine to create an overall glamorous or pampered appearance. The breed first appeared in the mid-1800s, and was originally bred for the key goal of catching rats before they later found popularity as a companion dog after exhibition on the dog show circuit.

Just a few of their most typical features comprise of their bold and feisty temperament, hypoallergenic coat that is commonly worn in long, flowing styles at dog shows around the world, tendency to be pampered and ability to offer a lot of dog in a small package – which help make the Yorkshire Terrier the third most popular companion dog breed in the world as well as the most popular of all breeds for apartment dwellers and people who suffer from dog allergies.

The Yorkshire Terrier is believed to have come from Yorkshire in England during the mid-1800s and was originally bred to catch rats that infested clothing mills. Soon they became popular around the dog show circuit and subsequently they found favor as a companion dog for the wealthy in England as well as America once they were exhibited there just a few years later. The many breeds thought to have been involved in their creation include the Waterside Terrier, Clydesdale Terrier, Paisley Terrier, Black and Tan English Terrier as well as perhaps the Maltese and Skye Terrier.

Yorkshire Terriers are classed as a tiny-sized breed. The suggested standard size for the Yorkshire Terrier male and female is 8-9 inches high from paw to shoulder and a weight of 5-7 pounds.

The Yorkshire Terrier is recognized for their busy, curious and often stubborn temperament. They are generally suspicious with unfamiliar people, but their small size often makes them unsuitable as a guard dog.

The Yorkshire Terrier is also known to be highly intelligent – scoring equal 27th in comparison with other dogs in terms of their capacity to be taught obedience instructions. They are also known to be too fragile for some young children and may become snappy with them if handled too roughly – making them not the best choice as a family pet. The Yorkshire Terrier is not highly pleasant with other animals and can be surprisingly aggressive despite their size which makes it very important to introduce them to new animals slowly.

The Yorkshire Terrier doesn’t need a yard to play in, and are easily the most popular breed for life in an apartment which they are highly suited to just as long as they are given enough exercise. They prefer warmer envi
ronments, and can be made to feel uncomfortable if it gets too cold – so extra measures should be taken to keep them warm in winter.

The Yorkshire Terrier takes pleasure in leisure activities like play sessions with their owner and going for a run around a safe area. They have a high level of energy and this necessitates exercise each day in the manner of short walks while being kept on the leash to prevent behavior problems like excessive barking – habits that the Yorkshire Terrier may be particularly inclined to take up if they’re given no other outlet for their energy.

The Yorkshire Terrier can make the ideal dog breed for gentle owners, families with older children, apartment dwellers, seniors or allergy sufferers. They are well-matched to anyone that is keen to execute a moderately high amount of grooming and take time to give them early socialization and fair discipline to establish the human as the pack leader as well as take them for short walks each day and grant a very high quantity of company and devotion.

You have seen this many times; soft, liquidy poop found in a pile on the rug under the kitchen table. In this article I am going to go over the common causes of dog diarrhea, and how it is diagnosed based on the clinical signs. Lastly you will see the more common and most effective at home remedies to be able to stop your dog’s diarrhea fast.

Anything that upsets the digestive tract and results in water not being absorbed produces diarrhea. Some common causes include dietary indiscretion (eating compost), parasites (Giardia or Roundworms), food allergy, infectious causes (Salmonella), inflammatory changes (Inflammatory Bowel Disease; similar to Crohn’s disease in people), and pancreatic abnormalities (Pancreatic insufficiency, common in German Shepherds).

Diarrhea in dogs is categorized as being either small bowel diarrhea ( it originates from the small intestine), or large bowel diarrhea ( it originates from the colon). Small bowel diarrhea is generally large volume, not very frequent, at times with vomiting and weight loss. The causes of small bowel diarrhea are many, from parasites to infectious agents. Large bowel diarrhea signs include frequent bowel movements, straining, with occasional mucous and blood. Most large bowel diarrhea is classified as colitis, being caused by dietary indiscretion.

Severe diarrhea that results in dehydration is a medical emergency and must be dealt with by your veterinarian. If you have a young unvaccinated dog the diarrhea may have an infectious cause; the dog must be examined by a veterinarian. If your pet is still very alert, active and drinking, then try some of the following home remedies.

Stop putting food into your pet for 24 hours (Day 1). This allows the intestines to rest and regenerate. Always have access to plenty of fresh water. After 24 hours, introduce a bland food for the next 24 hours (Day 2). Plain cooked white rice for dogs, feeding equivalent cups of rice as their normal diet. After a day of the bland food mix 1/2 regular diet and 1/2 bland diet (Day 3). By the end of Day 3, they should be back on their normal diet.

Probiotics help restore the natural bacteria in the intestine, normalizing the intestinal immune system. The most effective supplement is Lactobacillus acidophilus – give 1/4 capsule per 10 lbs of body weight twice daily. I advise probiotics for all cases of diarrhea, but purchase them from a reputable source to ensure the probiotics are active.

Pepto-Bismol is an old standby that can be effective for dogs. The dog dose is 1 ml/10 lbs of body weight given three times daily for no more than 7 days. Imodium (Loperamide) can be used with care, avoid giving it to Collie’s or Collie crosses. The dose for dogs is 0.5 mg/10 lbs three times daily (give your 40 lb dog one 2 mg tablet three times daily).

Kaopectate has a newer version that is safer for dogs. It contains attapulgite clay as the active ingredient which binds toxins, decreases the fluid in the intestinal tract and subsequent diarrhea. Dose for dogs: 0.5-1.0 ml per pound by mouth every 4-6 hours. Treatment should only be needed for 1-2 days.

There are a few herbs that I am finding helpful for dog diarrhea. Slippery Elm in the dried form can be helpful for chronic diarrhea, such as inflammatory bowel disease in dogs. The dried herb dose is 20 mg/lb of body weight twice daily. Peppermint helps with intestinal gas and cramping; give 25 mg/lb of body weight twice daily of the dried herb or 1 drop/lb of body weight twice daily of the tincture.

One homeopathic in particular stands out as being especially useful for most cases of diarrhea in dogs. It is called Arsenicum Album, and is my preferred homeopathic remedy for dogs with ‘Garbage Gut’. Dose: 1 30C tab per 20lbs every 2-4 hours.

You now should have a good understanding of what the signs and symptoms of dog diarrhea. You should be able to differentiate between large and small bowel diarrhea, and now know when to seek urgent veterinary care, or try some of my suggested home remedies. Now you have a selection of home remedies to use the next time your dog gets diarrhea, and you can now stop your dog’s diarrhea fast at home.

Cat diabetes is increasingly being diagnosed, and currently it affects more than 1 in 400 cats. Diabetes is very treatable, and does not need to shorten your cat’s life span. This article will go over the signs of diabetes in cats, along with the various suspected causes. I will review the most common solutions, focusing on the lesser know natural solutions that you can use to treat your cat for diabetes at home.

Most pet owner’s first suspect that their cat has diabetes as their cat is drinking and urinating much more than normal. This may be accompanied by increased appetite, but also weight loss. Occasional there is noticeable leg weakness, or dropping down on the rear legs. Some people notice a sweet smell to the breath. If not noticed early, your cat may become very ill with a condition called Ketoacidosis. This requires immediate veterinary treatment.

Diabetes is a result of the pancreas not producing enough insulin to allow the body to utilize blood glucose (sugar). This results in high blood sugar levels causing increased drinking and urination. Some cats are genetically at risk of developing diabetes. Cats that are obese typically are on a high carbohydrate dry cat food, are at higher risk.

If you suspect your pet is diabetic, have this confirmed by your veterinarian. Most cats begin with insulin, but with some diet alterations may come off insulin therapy. Ask your veterinarian about Glargine (brand name Lantus) Insulin – it is longer acting and better at regulating difficult to better at regulating difficult to regulate diabetic cats. The insulin injections can be given at home, and at the same time each day. Your veterinarian will show you how to give injections – they are not painful and usually not even noticed. The proper type of insulin, dose, and frequency of administration needs to be determined by your veterinarian.

If your cat is to have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), you’ll need to be able to recognize it, and respond quickly. This usually happens within an hour of giving the insulin injection. Your cat will be weak, trembling, dazed and may begin to shake or seizure. If you suspect this, immediately give a sugar boost. Have corn or maple syrup on hand and give 1-2 tablespoons. Rub it on the gums if he cannot swallow, then take him to your veterinarian immediately.

Recent studies have shown that cats benefit greatly from higher protein, lower carbohydrate diets. These resemble diets that they would eat in the wild. Changing to a less than 5% carbohydrate, high protein canned food is the single most important change to make. Eliminate the dry kibble, and only feed canned. Some commercial diets in this category include: Wellness Chicken or Turkey; Fancy Feast Chunky Chicken or Chunky Turkey; Nature’s Variety Organic, and raw, frozen diets. This gives your cat the greatest chance to come off of Insulin Therapy. I am finding that we can control diabetes in about 50% of diabetic cats by only feeding a higher protein canned food. One big additional point is that a change to a high protein canned food often means you’ll need to lower insulin doses to avoid hypoglycemia ( low blood sugar). Discuss this with your veterinarian.

Chromium is a supplement that makes the cells more receptive to taking up blood glucose (sugar). It may help to lower the dose of insulin. The dose is 25 mg per 10 lbs of body weight daily.

Diabetes affects the other cells in the body, damaging tissue and organ cells. Antioxidants limit this damage. Vitamin E (100 IU per 10 lbs twice daily) and Vitamin C (100 mg per 10 lbs twice daily) are two common antioxidants I would suggest.

One increasingly effective supplement helpful in treating cat diabetes is fish oil. It is a source of omega 3 fatty acids, and fish oil may increase insulin sensitivity. A feline dose is one regular strength capsule per 10 lbs of body weight given once daily. This equates to 1000mg of fish oil daily.

Cinnamon is a tasty spice has been shown to help regulate blood sugar- it is also a potent antioxidant. The active ingredient is called MHCP which mimics insulin to improve blood sugar regulation. The dose is ¼ of a teaspoon per 10 lbs daily.

You should now be able to recognize the signs of cat diabetes, and know what to do if your cat is showing these symptoms. You’ll now have an understanding of what causes diabetes in cats, and be able to take some proactive steps in preventing it in your cat. Most importantly you can now use a few of the holistic solutions to decrease and potential stop your cat from needing daily injections of insulin.

By Dr Andrew Jones, DVM

If your dog has been shaking his head and scratching at his ears, then he likely has an ear infection. Ear infections in dogs are very common but often very frustrating; they can quickly and often do re-occur leaving you wondering if you can ever get rid of them. This article will go over the most common causes of ear infections, and give you the most effective at home remedies to finally stop your dog’s ear infection.

Most pet owners can easily tell if their dog has an ear infection by looking into and their dog’s ear. A normal ear is light pink, not tender and easy to examine. In dog ear infections you will see a foul-smelling black, yellow or brown discharge. The ears may be very red and tender.

Most ear infections are caused by an underlying allergy. Some are caused by water in the ear after bathing or swimming. Dogs with large floppy ears, such as Basset Hounds, are prone to infections as their ear canals have poor air circulation, trapping moisture and allowing bacteria and yeast to grow.

Dogs with ear infections caused by yeast usually have a black discharge; this is commonly second to an allergy. Dogs with bacterial ear infections often have an organism called Staphylococcus; in rare cases a more serious infection is caused by a bacteria called Pseudomonas.

White vinegar (acetic acid) is very effective at removing debris from the ears and killing the yeast and bacteria responsible for ear infections. The vinegar is anti-fungal, so in many cases it alone can resolve your dog’s ear infection. If your dog has red, open wounds, do not use this as it will be painful. You need to use a soothing topical first (i.e. olive oil and Vitamin E). Dilute the vinegar with water 50:50, pick up a syringe from your local pharmacy and put 5 ml of the vinegar solution per 20 lbs of body weight into the affected ear. (Your cat would get 2.5 ml or 1/2 a tsp). Grab the ear where it attaches to the head (at the ear base), gently squeeze your thumb and forefinger together, rubbing the solution deep into the ear canals. Wipe the inside of the ear well with cotton balls to remove debris coming from the ear canal. Continue to do this daily for 5-7 days. For dogs with recurring infections, this can be done weekly.

Healing oils are especially helpful if your dog’s ears are inflamed and difficult to touch. You can use a mixture of 1 tablespoon of Olive Oil combined with 1 capsule of Vitamin E and crushed garlic. Insert that into your pets ear. Let it soak for 5 minutes, then rub the base of the ear well and wipe out excess debris with a cotton ball. The garlic is anti-fungal, so often helps with recurring ear infections.

For dogs that get recurring ear infections it is important to try a less allergenic diet. It should include a completely different protein with minimal added ingredients. One example commercial diet is made of fish and sweet potato.

Essential Fatty Acids are a must for any allergy that triggers recurring ear infections. The therapeutic dog dose is 1000 mg per 10lbs of body weight daily. An inexpensive option is to use flax oil, the dose being 1 tablespoon per 50lbs of body weight daily.

A common remedy most pet owners have around their home are antihistamines. Benadryl is the most commonly used antihistamine. It is given at a dose of 1 mg per pound of body weight, 2-3 times a day. It is best to consult your veterinarian before using these medications. It often takes 14 days of using these to see if they are helping.

Most ear infections produce red, inflamed ears, so it is important to decrease the inflammation. Aloe and Calendula can be applied topically in the ears twice daily to decrease inflammation. These have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, and in many cases successfully resolve the ear infection.

You should now better understand what causes dog ear infection, and be able to recognize this in your own dog. You can now clean your dog’s ear at home, using natural remedies to treat yeast and bacteria. Lastly you should now implement a few of these at home solutions to prevent your dog’s ear infection from recurring.

By Dr Andrew Jones, DVM

I recently read the headline of a ‘National Enquirer’ type magazine that claimed: ‘ Humping Dog Impregnates Man’s Leg’

If you happen to have a ‘humping dog’ problem, don’t fret, for leg pregnancy won’t happen..

But it did get me to thinking about how so many of our dog’s behaviours are misunderstood- including mounting or humping..

——————————— Why do they do this? ——————————–

Humping, otherwise known as mounting is what male dogs will do when they mate. Female dogs do this as well, of course less often. Dogs also mount furniture, toys, people’s legs, and for a few reasons.

Yes it can still be displaying sexual behaviour, hence that ‘special’ stuffy toy that your dog does ‘unnamed’ things to. Dogs are animals, as are we, and they still have sexual behaviours in spite being neutered/spayed.

Other triggers can be with types of anxiety-I can use my ‘new’ dog Jessie as an example. Things are cool with both him and my other dog Lewis, we can walk on the trail with bouts of peeing, running and playing, then when other dogs show up, Jessie hops on top of Lewis and proceeds to embarrass me and Lewis..

Then there is the most common explanation, displaying DOMINANCE. You commonly see this with puppies, and often with adult dogs. It’s saying ‘I AM IN CHARGE’ in a socially not always acceptable way.

————————— What Can You Do? —————————

If your dog isn’t spayed/neutered, then get this done.

You don’t need to address the behaviour all the time, BUT when it’s excessive, involving your neighbors leg, or crushing the small dog on the dog walk, then you need to come up with some strategies.

Assuming your dog is’fixed’ then let’s use some positive rewards based training. Correcting in a harsh manner for humping can cause more serious problems.

1. Get back to BASIC training skills. You want your dog to be able to sit, come, lay down on cue.

2. Distract- get the ball, offer the squeaky toy, the kong filled with peanut butter..

3. Don’t get too worried- for your dog isn’t and if you get all angry, the behaviour won’t be changing, but you can sure damage the relationship with your dog.

As with many unwanted dog behaviours, some time spent learning positive rewards based training will pay off in spades, and you WILL change the undesired behavior.

Dog humping, otherwise known as dog mounting, is a relatively common undesired dog behavior, and dog’s do it for a variety of reasons. It can be sexual, it can be caused by anxiety, or it can be a display of dominence. Regardless of the cause, there are a variety of things that you can do to stop this unwanted behavior. The common theme of changing the behavior is going back to basic training, and rewarding your dog when they do the appropriate behavior.

Tags:dog allergies

It is suggested that if you are looking for permanent relief for dog allergies symptoms you need to go see a veterinary dermatologist. Here you can find the cause for sneezing in dogs, general allergies in dogs and most of your dog skin problems.

People medicines such as Benadryl and Claritin will only provide temporary relief of the signs and your dog will still be uncomfortable.

In some cases the dermatologist may be able to make up allergy shots if they find out the cause of your dogs allergies. You should not make any diet changes or treat your pet with any medication without strict guidance from a veterinarian.

Changing the dog’s diet without the guidance from a veterinarian can make it more difficult for them to isolate the cause of the allergies. It’s entirely possible that the causes may involve specific foods. This requires an extensive food trial. However it could be environmental agents that are causing your dog allergies symptoms which would require further allergy testing.

On your own you could try hydroxizine or atarax for some relief. Do Not use prednisone, it is not the greatest it’s a steroid and have several side effects. You can also try eliminating the normal protein source with another protein like fish or venison. It takes up to 2 to 3 months of a diet change to tell if there is any effect.

Allergic contact dermatitis usually shows up in dogs as a hypersensitivity reaction to particular molecules in your pet’s environment. Irritant contact dermatitis happens when the skin is exposed to noxious substances in the environment. The symptoms and biologic mechanisms in these two disease structures are closely similar and are often discussed together.

Allergic contact dermatitis is a rare disease, which occurs when an animal’s skin overreacts to certain small molecules in the environment. Substances, which can cause allergic contact dermatitis in dogs include some antibiotics applied to the skin, metals such as nickel, materials like rubber or wool and chemicals such as dyes and carpet deodorizers.

Irritant contact dermatitis occurs when the dog’s skin is exposed to intensely irritating chemicals like the sap in poison ivy or road salt.

What are the symptoms of allergic and irritant contact dermatitis?

Lesions occur on the areas of skin that are sparsely haired and exposed to the offending cause. Areas like the back of the paws, abdomen, muzzle, and lips.

The affected areas are usually very red, have small bumps or blister-like lesions, and itch like crazy. Also in irritant contact dermatitis may occur.

The key to managing these dog allergies symptoms is the obvious removing or restricting of exposure to any allergen or contact irritant in the pet’s environment. If your not able to do this, then using fatty acids, antihistamines, biotin, and topical shampoos can at least control the itching.

As a rule, for any pet suspected of having an allergy problem that could include an allergic contact component, we recommend:

Glass or stainless steel food and water bowls, cleaned and rinsed well daily

Hypoallergenic detergents for the pet’s bedding

Routine hypoallergenic shampoos for the pet to remove any allergens

Restricting walking to sidewalks or paved surfaces-completely avoiding the grass,

if possible.

Be kind to your pooch!

Hopefully in the not to distant future there will be an easier fix for all allergies in dogs.

Tags:carrier,pet accessories

A Pet carrier that is safe and keeps your pet out of harm’s way is an ideal choice. Your home, car, or even an airplane can all board this convenient accessory. They prove to be really helpful especially for small pets. It is the best means to keep them secure from other pets thus saving them from potential harm. So, it is important that a pet owner understands how necessary and purposeful these carriers are.

There are a variety of basic attributes that the carriers must have.

1. Securely Hold Your Pet

In order for your pet to remain secure, a quality carrier should come equipped with a belt to hold the pet in place. If you are traveling in a car, a quick jolt may bang them to the floor or slide them about uneasily. Therefore, it is vital that they remain secure to avoid any unwanted accidents.

2. Protect the Car Interiors

To protect the inside of your car from getting destroyed, todays’ pet carriers come with a washable cover. These covers are practical and handy since they keep the interior of your car clean from pet hair and dirt.

3. Provides a Comfortable Ride

The pet carrier puts your pet in safe hands. In addition, you can get portable carriers equipped with handles at the top so transporting your pet is substantially easier while traveling. It decreases stress if your pet is safe and sound and relaxed as you move it from one place to another.

4. Convertible Pet Carriers

The primary reason for using a convertible pet carrier is to allow your pet to be transferred safely from one place to another. Convertible pet carriers fold down so they make great spacesavers and also ultra convenient. This makes them very practical and provides great flexibility.

5. Storage Compartments

Pet accessories can be easily organized using the storage compartments to prevent frustration when trying to locate an item for your pet. A good quality pet carrier is long lasting and serves its purpose.

Training your pets before traveling is necessary if they have never journeyed in a carrier before. Be understanding and help your pet adjust to the different and strange environment of a carrier; which may take a bit of time for them to adapt to.

As you travel on out-of-town trips, your pet will enjoy going with you. And since it doesn’t matter what size your pet is, their carrier will accommodate them comfortably. If given a choice, your pet would always prefer traveling with you in lieu of staying home alone or in the care of someone unfamiliar.

Large pet carriers become your pet’s personal lair and can comfortably accommodate your dog, cat, or rabbit while you are traveling by plane, train, or automobile. Generally, the size of the carrier should enable your pet to move freely and to fully stand inside of it. This way, your animal friends will remain preoccupied and amused throughout your long trips and prevent them from chewing items they shouldn’t have.

If you need a large pet carrier that keeps your pets secure; a wire pet crate is a good option. This carrier was made to ensure the security and comfort of your pets while presenting a practical means for you to take your precious pets everywhere you roam.
