The post Mobile repairers: meet those blazing new trails within the repair sector first appeared on CAT Magazine.

Mobile repairers say they are blazing new trails within the independent repair sector, and this growing cohort is eager to show that lessons learned on the road can be applied within static settings.

“Mobile repairers offer a different level of visibility, transparency and trust,” said Elliott Smart of Ell’s Auto Care (pictured below). “There’s huge market potential for mobile mechanic services and, done properly, they can sit alongside traditional workshops as a trusted, professional part of the wider repair sector, giving customers more choice without compromising on standards.”

Smart, whose business caters to customers in and around Bridgend, says overcoming preconceptions held by customers and within the trade is crucial: “There’s an assumption it’s a stop-gap service, when in practice, you can deliver the same level of diagnostic capability and repair standard as any fixed-site operation. Mobile means convenience, not compromise.”

It doesn’t end there though: “By going to the customer, you remove a layer of disruption from their day, but more than that, you take away the stress that comes with it.

Technology is also helping Elliott to stay ahead: “Everything is managed through a mobile-friendly garage management system, so I can handle bookings, send reminders, issue quotes and keep track of work from my phone. That level of organisation wasn’t there when I first started, and it’s made a big difference to both efficiency and growth.”

There are some lessons that some static garages could learn from mobile operators too: “You have to be commercially disciplined. If a job sits outside that plan and needs doing urgently, I’ll accommodate it, but it’s priced to reflect the time and impact.”

Real market

John Maynard (pictured below), who operates as JSM Mobile Mechanic, is based in Kent. He said going mobile had a big impact on how he works: “It’s the same job, but done completely differently. You need to be a self-starter. You certainly need to work a lot cleaner to operate on driveways. It’s not like having an oil spill in the workshop.” Tech is key as well: “Access to technical data makes the job easier and faster. I use Haynes Pro.”

Norfolk based Jordan Kendal is the founder of JLK Vehicle Solutions. He said: “There’s a real market for mobile which is why I’ve been successful. There are 4,000 people in my village, and around 15,000 in the next, yet there is just one garage.”

One challenge for mobile mechanics noted by Kendal is the need to be proactive about keeping up with the latest developments in the sector: “When you’re a garage, you get companies stopping by to show their latest products, including diagnostic kit. As a mobile mechanic you need to go to trade events and follow what is happening via social media. Technology is going to help you big time, but you have to go looking for it.”

Technology and knowledge

So what works best; mobile or static? London-based mechanic Natasha Rawal is doing both. She said: “I work as a mobile mechanic as well as in a workshop. It gives extra income and flexibility when I need it. It’s very different in terms of workspace. When you are mobile you are out there on your own without everything you need at your disposal.

“It also has advantages; it’s local and flexible and the customer relationship is different. I would recommend to anyone thinking about it. The workshop day-to-day helps me stay on top of technology and my knowledge though. It’s harder and more expensive to have the tools and technology if you are mobile on your own.”

The post Mobile repairers: meet those blazing new trails within the repair sector first appeared on CAT Magazine.

Platform provides workshops and distributors with a single interface to manage parts returns

The post ZF expands CorExpedia platform to unify core returns across all brands first appeared on CAT Magazine.

ZF Aftermarket has expanded its CorExpedia digital platform to support core returns across its ZF, TRW, SACHS, and WABCO brands.

This expansion unifies reverse logistics for used components across Europe, providing workshops and distributors with a single interface to manage parts returns, the firm said. By digitising a process that is traditionally manual and complex, the platform offers real-time visibility into outstanding cores, shipping requirements, and surcharge refund statuses.

Remanufacturing depends on the consistent return of used parts to maintain production cycles. ZF currently produces more than 7300 remanufactured products across 20 global locations.

The CorExpedia platform acts as the “digital backbone for this supply chain”, said the firm, ensuring that materials remain within the circular economy.

Philippe Colpron, Head of ZF Aftermarket, notes that remanufacturing is a core component of the company’s strategy to reduce waste and extend the life cycle of automotive components. He said: “At ZF, Remanufacturing has been part of our DNA for decades, and today it plays a crucial role in reducing waste, conserving resources, and extending product life cycles. With more than 7300 remanufactured products produced across 20 locations worldwide, ZF is proud to be one of the global leaders in circular aftermarket solutions. This commitment drives us every day and Reman Day is a perfect moment to highlight the value and impact of this work.”

For aftermarket partners, the platform reduces administrative effort by providing clear instructions on packaging and documentation. Once returned cores are verified at a ZF REMAN facility, the digital workflow accelerates the processing of surcharge refunds. ZF also offers to organize transport and cover associated logistics costs, further simplifying the return chain for its customers.

From an operational standpoint, CorExpedia provides ZF with data on incoming cores, which improves stock management and ensures a reliable supply of components for remanufacturing. This transparency makes the return process more predictable for both the supplier and the customer. By streamlining these logistics, ZF enables workshops and fleets to participate in a circular parts lifecycle with greater efficiency and reduced overhead.

The post ZF expands CorExpedia platform to unify core returns across all brands first appeared on CAT Magazine.

Fahren has launched an extended range of engine oils, now available in 1L, 5L, 20L, and 199L containers.

The smaller 1L and 5L packs are aimed at quick-service centres and retail customers, while the 20L and 199L barrels provide a more cost-effective option for high-volume workshop and dealership environments. Formulated to improve engine stability and fuel economy, the lubricants are suitable for modern vehicles with extended service intervals.

To simplify product selection, each pack features a colour-coded label for quick identification of the specific oil grade. Detailed technical data sheets and certification information have also been made available on the Fahren website.

This expansion marks a move by Fahren to increase its presence in the automotive market by combining high-performance formulations with packaging sizes that suit various maintenance scales.

The UK Garage & Bodyshop Event has confirmed that the father-and-son team behind a viral Mini restoration project will appear at the event held at the NEC, Birmingham in June.

Twelve-year-old Ben and his father, Gary, will share their story of rebuilding a classic Mini, a project started when Ben was 10 years old.

The project began as Gary’s initiative to encourage Ben to develop practical skills away from digital screens. The goal is to complete the restoration by Ben’s 16th birthday so he can drive the car to his school prom. Documenting their progress online, the pair has gained a significant following while showcasing Ben’s development in welding, grinding, and engine stripping.

Speaking about the experience, Ben said: “I’ve learnt welding, grinding, how to strip my first ever engine, replacing panels, and it’s all thanks to my dad. I’m just lucky.”

Gary added: “All the kids these days are computer-based. There’s very few with practical skills now. This has brought us together; I’ve had to learn patience and Ben’s had to learn the skills.”

The appearance of “The Mini Boys” is intended to inspire the next generation of technicians by demonstrating the results of hands-on learning and mentorship. Joanne Knowles, event director at Messe Frankfurt, organisers of the UK Garage & Bodyshop Event, said: “Ben and Gary’s story is incredibly inspiring and highlights exactly why it’s so important to engage the next generation with hands-on skills. Their journey shows what can be achieved with the right support, encouragement and passion, and we’re delighted to welcome them to this year’s event.”

Independent garages are benefitting from an increasing AI dividend, with businesses reporting that tools powered by artificial intelligence are boosting efficiency by around 30% across the board. Workshops are then using the flexibility gained to continue to increase market share, offering customers convenience that franchised dealers struggle to match.

The launch of ChatGPT in 2022 was arguably the official kick off point for the artificial intelligence era, and garages were quick to recognise the opportunity: “One of the biggest impacts has been in customer communication, “explained Reaz Mojumder from QCD Autocentre in Brackley, Northamptonshire. “Using AI-supported systems to manage emails, quotes, and updates has resulted in an estimated 25–35% reduction in inbound calls for progress updates.”

Greater efficiency means businesses like QCD can play to their strengths: “With main dealer lead times often reaching four to six weeks,” explained Mojumder, “both retail and fleet customers are increasingly turning to independents to reduce vehicle-off-road (VOR) time. Rather than competing directly with franchised dealers, we focus on what independents do best: speed, flexibility, and customer service.”

Customer engagement

He continued: “Internally, AI helps organise bookings, enquiries, and accounting processes, freeing up valuable time. As a result, our front-of-house team now has 20–30% more capacity to focus on bookings, sales pipeline, and customer engagement. This contributes directly to business growth.”

Having seen the admin advantages offered, AI is being rolled out across the business. “AI is also supporting our diagnostic processes,” said Mojumder, “helping us produce clear, structured explanations of faults, along with defined test plans and next steps. This can be integrated into quotes or shared directly with customers, improving transparency while reducing the need for repeated explanations.”

While the business is clearly making the most of the tech, it has eschewed AI-driven telephone systems. “Many customers find automated phone services frustrating, particularly when trying to resolve issues with banks or mobile providers, and prefer speaking to a real person,” noted Mojumder. “Maintaining that human connection remains a key part of our service.”

Intelligent technology

Stourbridge Automotive is also using AI tools to enhance communication. Director Kay Fellows (pictured below) said: “With part of our management team having worked previously in the dealer world, we recently adopted Auto3iii. This uses AI to enhance communication between us and our customer about their onsite vehicle health checks. This ensures every vehicle is checked, reported, and followed up in a consistent manner.

“The intelligent technology generates reports from our workshop technical team through to our customers, so they kept informed on previous and current work with future advisories or when work becomes urgent.”

On the impact on customers, Fellows revealed: “Our net promoter score (NPS) increased from 85 in November to 91 for December with December being the very first month of use. It has continued to rise and in February we achieved a high score of 94.”

Real work

EAC Telford has been using AI call handling platform Reception Mate for since September 2025. EAC helped to trial the 24/7 call handling service before it was integrated into Garage Hive.

“The system helps make sure no calls are missed, “said Director Mark Kettle (pictured below), “and customers are still able to get support. It converts more enquiries into confirmed bookings and captures revenue that would otherwise be lost. The calls actually turn into real work too, driving revenue. Just last week 86 calls were received. That would have been 86 missed calls previously.”

Looking more broadly, Kettle concluded: “From October to December– there were 1,468 calls answered at the centre. 158 of these became bookings. Revenue generated from this, including any other sold items, was almost £29,000. That’s money they wouldn’t have otherwise made.”

The post Independent garages report 30% efficiency uptick thanks to AI first appeared on CAT Magazine.

Promoted article by BM Catalysts

When the production team from Car SOS arrived at Europe’s leading manufacturer of aftermarket hot end emissions products, it marked the start of a truly special collaboration, one that combined engineering expertise with the excitement of working alongside a much-loved television production to form part of its 14th series.

Over the course of several months, the project unfolded with careful planning, preparation and precision. Hosting the Car SOS crew brought a unique energy to BM Catalysts’ operating facilities. Cameras captured every stage of the process, but behind the scenes it was the same unwavering focus on quality, craftsmanship and execution that defines every project.

At the heart of the episode was a classic 1990 Nissan Pulsar GTI-R in need of more than just a cosmetic restoration. The objective was to return the vehicle to full roadworthy condition, ensuring it could meet modern emissions standards while retaining its much loved and iconic baby Godzilla alias.

However, a critical issue stood in the way. The car’s emissions control system was incomplete. From the outset, it was clear that this would not be a straightforward job. Essential components were missing or damaged, meaning the Pulsar couldn’t meet the compliance requirements in its current state.

There was no off-the-shelf solution available. Instead, BM Catalysts utilised their specialist skills to create a bespoke system. One that would integrate seamlessly with the vehicle while delivering the necessary emissions performance and is now also available as part of the extensive product range.

It was a complex challenge that required both technical innovation and a deep understanding of the vehicle’s dynamics. The main barrier faced during the initial phases of the project was the lack of an existing OE reference. Therefore, to overcome this, BM Catalysts sourced a replica vehicle. By carefully dismantling and analysing its exhaust system, the development team established the optimal fitment, ensuring maximum accuracy further down the line.

To make matters more challenging, the ‘replica vehicle was also missing its catalytic converter. However, once the vehicle’s layout and engine characteristics were fully mapped, a one-off catalytic converter was designed specifically for the Car SOS Pulsar.

Every detail mattered. This was not simply about making something fit, it was about creating a solution that performed flawlessly and stood the test of time and the finished product did just that.

Once installed, it completed the Pulsar’s emissions system, bringing the car up to compliance and restoring its roadworthiness. The transformation was immediate and significant, enabling the vehicle to return to the road as intended.

The completed project was later unveiled to owner and life-long petrol head, Raymond at Silverstone, the most iconic circuit in British Motorsport. The reveal itself was a fitting tribute, not just to the car, but to the journey behind it. Seeing the fully restored Pulsar take its place in such a legendary setting added an extra layer of emotion and significance to the moment. For Raymond, it wasn’t just about getting his car back, it was about reclaiming a piece of personal history, brought back to life in spectacular fashion.

The episode itself highlighted something far greater than the technical challenge. At its core, Car SOS is about helping people, using a shared passion of cars as a vehicle for something deeply human, being part of a project that slivers such a meaningful outcome made it all the more important for the BM Catalysts team to get every detail right. This wasn’t just another engineering task, it was an opportunity to contribute to something genuinely positive, where the end result would have a lasting emotional impact.

As a team made up of genuine car enthusiasts, BM Catalysts immediately connected with both the vehicle and Raymond’s story. Being ‘car people’ meant understanding exactly what was at stake, not just the mechanical challenger, but the sentimental value behind it. That shared passion created an even greater driver to deliver solution worthy of the car and its owner. There was a real sense of pride in knowing that the work carried out would play a part in such a meaningful transformation.

Working alongside the Car SOS team was a genuine highlight for everyone involved at BM Catalysts. The project combined months of preparation with hands-on expertise as well as teamwork, and a shared goal, all culminating in a successful and highly rewarding result.

More than anything, it showcased the craftsmanship and dedication that BM Catalysts brings to every challenge. Whether on camera or behind the scenes, the focus remains the same, delivering engineered emissions control solutions of the highest quality, driven by passion, precision and a genuine love for cars.

Historically, one of the many challenges brought by conflict in the Middle East has been the supply of crude oil. It has a long-lasting impact on economies across the globe well after hostilities stop – and, in the case of hostilities in Iran, an end does not appear to be nearing.

Already, the UK has seen prices at fuel pumps yo-yo. But for workshops, the fear mostly concerns supply shortages of general lubricants that keep businesses operative, with one Audi specialist telling CAT it had less than month of stock left to serve the workshops.

Even in peacetime, it typically takes an oil tanker more than a month to make it to the UK for refining. Fear is growing over a resultant shortage of workshop lubricants, let alone the rising prices brought by the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route.

Speaking on behalf of high street chain A1 Motor Stores, Kym Smith told CAT that there’s no cause for concern yet – although Smith admitted it’s currently not taking on new trade customers, to protect existing ones. “We’re naturally keeping an eye out and may see a slight reduction on the quantities we supply but right now there’s sufficient supplies of lubricants,” said Smith.

Yet Smith doesn’t discount the potential for problems arising for certain modern classics, which demand model-specific specialist lubricants. This may lead to short-term shortages of both their base stock oils and additives.

Justin Wasling, commercial programme director for motor factor GSF, allays any worries: “The lubricant market has been operating against a backdrop of volatility for some time, and suppliers are well‑accustomed to managing this. Established brands with long‑term supply agreements for Group III base oil are well positioned to maintain continuity, which is why availability has remained steady for the majority of the market.

“For workshops, there’s no need to change behaviour – buying in line with normal operational requirements remains the sensible approach” is his advice.

A spokesperson from LKQ UK & Ireland said: “In response to the situation in the Middle East, some of our suppliers have announced changes to the availability and pricing of engine and transmission oils, additives, and other oil-based products, generally in the form of quotas against prior purchasing patterns. We are well used to dealing with changing market conditions and we pride ourselves on being able to respond to uncertainty whilst maintaining great service.

“We have been working proactively with suppliers and manufacturers to maintain stock and availability, which has included removing some products from promotion, introducing maximum purchase limits and passing on any supplier price increases. We are closely monitoring the situation, and we’ll do whatever we can to mitigate its impact while ensuring transparent and open communication with our customers and suppliers throughout.”

Unsurprisingly, suppliers are non-committal on inevitable price rises. Some retailers and workshops are having to pass on any hikes in both materials and their road deliveries to the end user. Confirming Smith’s comments, some specialist lube prices have already risen, such as classic oils; one retailer told Classic Car Weekly that the shelf price of a typical 5-litre pack has already swollen by £12, depending on manufacturer. The long-term worry is that motorists – already strapped for cash – will skip services, while squeezed workshops may have to stomach the ever rising costs of running a business or face losing even more custom.

The post Iran crisis puts the squeeze on vehicle lubricant supplies first appeared on CAT Magazine.

TPS has appointed a new head of parts sales operations.

Adam Linforth began this month and, according to TPS, brings with him a wealth of industry experience.

Linforth had previously been employed by car maker JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) for 24 years, working across aftersales, franchising, sales, strategy both in the UK and globally.

Linforth started his career with Brown Brothers progressing to the Ford Parts Plus programme, driving the adoption of genuine Ford parts by independent motor traders and playing a major role in maximising retailer partner performance.

Since joining TPS in September 2025, the firm says Linforth has already brought meaningful contributions to TPS’s performance and operations.

He has now moved into the more senior role. Within this, Linforth has taken on responsibility for running the TPS operation, including the ‘Brands at TPS’ activities, and is also overseeing the Body Repair activities across all the Volkswagen Group brands.

Linforth said: “I am excited to be part of the TPS team. There’s a great buzz amongst everyone I have spoken to, both in Head Office and our network and I am really looking forward to this new challenge within the group.

“My first impressions so far are extremely positive. I have been really taken by the passion of everyone I talk to at TPS, and the shared excitement that comes from the many opportunities out there for us all to capture new business.”

“As we move forward, I’m keen to see more of how our business operates and how I can support the TPS centre network teams and my fellow TPS colleagues to drive our collective performance over the coming months.”

A1 ADAS Group has appointed Jamie Willis as its business relationship manager as the firm has doubled in size over the past year.

It said the appointment was fuelled by a desire to strengthen its customer service and ties with its clients, on the back of that growth.

“Finding the right person for this role was about more than experience,” said managing director Iain Molloy. “We wanted someone who truly understands our ethos. A1 is not a standard corporate. We’re professional and highly accountable, but we operate with a family ethos that puts relationships first. Jamie gets that completely. He brings technical credibility, industry knowledge and a trusted reputation, making him a perfect fit for our customers and our team.”

Willis added: “Equipment is only as good as the person operating it. I’ve already seen, for example, that the remote diagnostics team responds almost immediately to jobs; that’s not common in this industry. It means I can tell customers what to expect and know, with full integrity, that the service they receive is likely to exceed those expectations.”

Treasury scrambles to mitigate against odometer tampering after CAT reveals blocking devices are easy to buy and fit

An investigation by CAT has uncovered a major threat to the government’s proposed pay-per-mile scheme for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles from easily accessible aftermarket mileage blockers capable of freezing a car’s odometer.

Pay-per-mile charging, officially called eVED, is scheduled to start in April 2028 as an extra tax placed on EVs and PHEVs to recover income lost from fuel duty. The tax will start at a rate of 3p per mile driven in an EV and 1.5p per mile driven in a PHEV and drivers will need to self-declare their mileage annually.

Concerns are growing that when the scheme is introduced, drivers will fit mileage blockers as a means of avoiding or reducing this levy. The devices, which range in price from around £200 to £900, are not illegal to sell and are marketed for use on cars being tested or developed away from the road.

It is, however, illegal to use a car on the road fitted with one, and CAT’s investigation has found that hundreds of drivers and businesses are buying and fitting these devices each week, with the aim of reducing or avoiding paying a mileage penalty at the conclusion of a PCP or a lease.

Mileage blockers are available for many popular petrol and diesel vehicles and, increasingly, for electric and hybrid ones. Suppliers claim that when installed in a car’s on-board computer, the device prevents a vehicle from adding mileage data to any ECU or module as well as, where enabled, to the ignition key. They claim a blocker is easy to install but difficult to detect.

Given that difficulty to detect, there are additional fears that increasing numbers of EVs and PHEVs previously fitted with the devices will enter the used car market (potentially without the current owner knowing), boosting the number of clocked cars already in circulation.

Posing as a customer, a CAT reporter contacted a leading supplier of mileage blockers. The reporter said he owned a Volkswagen ID 3 registered in 2022 and was interested in buying a mileage blocker for the vehicle. A salesperson said the firm could supply a device that was safe and reliable. The salesperson added that each month his business sold 500 blockers to retail customers and 250-300 to the trade, and that new devices were becoming available each month.

“Our supplier in Germany has just cracked the post-2024-model VW Passat and hopes to have cracked the rest of the 2024 VW range within the next few months,” he said. “Also, they are just about to finish developing blockers for Omoda, Jaecoo and Chery vehicles.”

The law makes no mention of mileage blockers but simply states that selling a vehicle whose mileage has been altered and not disclosing that fact is illegal.

The company that CAT contacted states that a mileage blocker is a “legitimate tool for research and development purposes” and warns that driving a car on the road fitted with one is illegal. However, it also explains that mileage blockers are popular because “they have the potential to save drivers from big fines and higher insurance quotes” and “are becoming increasingly popular in the UK as more people look for ways to save money on their motoring costs”.

Commenting on the availability of mileage blockers for the VW ID 3 and other Volkswagen Group vehicles, a spokesperson for VW said: “Mileage blockers are available to buy online for most vehicle makes but are designed for specific circumstances only. It is illegal to use them on public roads and anyone installing one risks safety and a criminal conviction if they subsequently sell the car without telling the buyer the mileage has been altered. If our technicians discovered a blocker when inspecting a vehicle, they would alert the customer to its presence.”

CAT shared the results of its investigation with Cap HPI, a vehicle data checking service.

Wendy Swaine, the company’s expert in vehicle provenance, said: “The only reason people tamper with a car’s mileage is for financial gain – for example, to avoid paying the mileage penalty on a PCP or lease contract and, from April 2028, perhaps also to reduce their eVED liability.”

Peter Golding, CEO of FleetCheck, a fleet software management company, said the introduction of eVED will greatly increase the temptation to clock a car. “If you’re covering 20,000 miles a year in an EV, your eVED bill will be £600. For a few people, the ease with which that amount can be reduced will be difficult to resist. This is an issue that has very real potential to increase the number of clocked vehicles on the used market.”

Presented with CAT’s findings, a spokesperson for the Treasury, which is responsible for the implementation of eVED, said it is “considering further options to mitigate against odometer tampering and intends to engage with manufacturers, the leasing industry and insurers to minimise fraud”. The spokesperson added that “any necessary legislative, regulatory and technical steps will be taken to widen existing law and strengthen enforcement”.

The post Investigation: Mileage blockers pose threat to government’s EV tax first appeared on CAT Magazine.
