แมวไทย

แมวไทย คือแมวที่มีถิ่นกำเนิดอยู่ในประเทศไทย คุณสมบัติที่ทำให้แมวไทยเหนือกว่าแมวชนิดอื่น คือ อุปนิสัย แมวไทยมีความฉลาด มีความเป็นตัวของตัวเอง รู้จักคิด รู้จักประจบ รักบ้าน รักเจ้าของ และเหนืออื่นใด คือ รักความอิสระของตัวเองเป็นชีวิตจิตใจ อิสระที่ จะกิน จะดื่ม หรือจะไปไหนตามที่ใจชอบ ซึ่งถือว่าเป็นบุคลิกประจำตัวที่ทำให้แตกต่างจากแมวพันธุ์อื่น สีสันตามตัวของแมวไทย เป็นปัจจัยหนึ่งที่ทำให้นักรักแมวรู้สึกสุขใจยามได้มอง ไม่ว่าจะเป็น วิเชียรมาศ เก้าแต้ม ขาวมณีหรือขาวปลอด นิลรัตน์หรือดำปลอด ศุภลักษณ์หรือ ทองแดง สีสวาดหรือแมวไทยพันธุ์โคราช ต่างล้วนได้รับความสนใจ จากเจ้าของและผู้สนใจทั้งสิ้น ....

เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2427 พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 ได้พระราชทานแมววิเชียรมาศคู่หนึ่งให้แก่ กงสุลอังกฤษชื่อ โอเวน กูลด์ แมวไทยคู่นี้ชนะการประกวดแมวที่ กรุงลอนดอน และทำให้ชาวอังกฤษนิยมเลี้ยงแมวไทยมากขึ้น ในที่สุดก็แพร่หลายไปทั่วโลก และแมววิเชียรมาศก็เป็นที่รู้จักในภาษาอังกฤษว่า "Siamese Cat" หรือ แมวสยาม

ในสหรัฐอเมริกา แมวไทยตัวแรกเป็นแมวของ ลูซี่ เว็บบ์ ภรรยาของ รัทเทอร์ฟอร์ด บี. เฮส์ ประธานาธิบดีคนที่ 29 ของสหรัฐอเมริกา

สำหรับในประเทศไทย คนไทยที่เป็นที่รับรู้ดีว่าชอบเลี้ยงแมวไทย อาทิ เช่น นายสมัคร สุนทรเวช อดีตนายกรัฐมนตรีและอดีตผู้ว่าราชการกรุงเทพมหานคร, นายพิชัย วาสนาส่ง อดีตผู้เชี่ยวชาญเรื่องการต่างประเทศ และ ดร.สมเกียรติ อ่อนวิมล อดีตผู้อำนวยการองค์การสื่อสารมวลชนแห่งประเทศไทย (อสมท.) เป็นต้น

ปัจจุบัน ยีนของแมวไทยได้กระจายไปสู่แมวสายพันธุ์ต่างประเทศทั่วโลกมากถึง 40 สายพันธุ์ด้วยกัน

ชนิดของแมวไทย

แมวไทย (วิฬาร) ที่ยังเหลือให้พบเห็นในปัจจุบันนี้มี 6 ชนิดคือ

วิเชียรมาศ สีสวาด ศุภลักษณ์ โกญจา ขาวมณี และแซมเสวตร

แต่แท้จริงแล้วในสมุดข่อยโบราณได้กล่าวถึงแมวไทยว่ามีทั้งหมด 23 สายพันธุ์

แบ่งออกเป็นแมวให้คุณ 17 ชนิด และ แมวร้ายให้โทษอีก 6 ชนิด

แมวให้คุณ 17 ชนิด

วิเชียรมาศ เมื่อแรกเกิดมีขนสีขาวหมด พอโตขึ้นจะมีสีเปลี่ยนเป็นสีครีมอ่อน ๆ แต่ที่หน้า หาง เท้าทั้งสี่หูทั้งสองข้าง และที่อวัยวะเพศอีก 1 แห่งรวมเก้าแห่งมีสีน้ำตาล (สีเข้ม) มีนัยน์ตาประกายสีฟ้าสดใส เลี้ยงไว้มีคุณค่ายิ่งลำนักหนา จักนำโภคาพิพัฒน์สมบัติเพิ่มพูล
ศุภลักษณ์ หรือ ทองแดง สีขนเป็นสีทองแดงตลอดตัว มีนัยน์ตาเป็นประกาย ใครเลี้ยงจักได้ยศถา ยิ่งพ้นพรรณนาเป็นอำมาตย์มนตรี
มาเลศ หรือ แมวโคราช หรือ สีสวาด มีขนสีดอกเลาเปรียบเสมือนกับเมฆสีเทายามฟ้ายับฝน มีนัยน์ตาหยาดเยิ้มประหนึ่งนำค้างย้ยต้องกลีบบัว ใครพบเร่งให้อุปถัมภ์ แมวนั้นจักนำมาซึ่งสุขสวัสดิ์มงคล
โกนจา หรือ ดำปลอด มีสีดำละเอียด นัยน์ตาสีดอกบวบแรกแย้ม หางเรียวยาว ท่าทางการเดินสง่าเหมือนสิงโต แมวนี้เลี้ยงดีมีคุณหนักหนา จงเร่งหามาเลี้ยงเทอญอย่าแคลงสงสัย
นิลรัตน์ สีดำทั้งตัว รวมถึงเล็บ ลิ้น ฟัน ดวงตา และกระดูก หางยาวตวัดได้จนถึงหัว เลี้ยงไว้แล้วเชื่อว่าจะมีความเจริญ มีทรัพย์ ปราศจากอันตราย
วิลาศ มีลำตัวสีดำจากคอไปตลอดท้อง จากสองหูไปจนถึงหางและขาทั้งสี่มีสีขาว ตาสีเขียว เชื่อว่าเลี้ยงไว้แล้วจะได้เป็นเจ้าคนนายคน มีเงินทองมากมาย
เก้าแต้ม มีสีขาวเป็นพื้น มีแต้มสีดำเก้าจุดที่คอ หัว ต้นขาหน้าและหลังทั้งสองข้างและที่ท้ายลำตัว เชื่อว่าเลี้ยงไว้แล้วจะรุ่งเรืองทางการค้าขาย
รัตนกำพล ตัวขาวเหมือนหอยสังข์ แต่รอบตัวตรงส่วนอกมีลักษณะคล้ายสายคาดสีดำ ตาสีเหลือง เชื่อว่าเลี้ยงแล้วจะมียศ ผู้อื่นยำเกรง
นิลจักร มีลำตัวดำสนิท ที่คอมีขนสีขาวอยู่รอบเหมือนกับปลอกคอ เชื่อว่าเลี้ยงแล้วจะมีทรัพย์มาก
มุลิลา ลำตัวดำ หูสองข้างมีสีขาว ตามีสีเหลืองเหมือนดอกเบญจมาศ เชื่อว่าแมวชนิดนี้เหมาะกับนักบวชเลี้ยงเพราะช่วยให้มีการเล่าเรียนดีสมปรารถนา
กรอบแว่น หรือ อานม้า มีปานลักษณะอานม้าบนหลัง เชื่อว่าแมวชนิดนี้มีราคาสูงถึงแสนตำลึงทองคำ และให้เกียรติยศแก่เจ้าของ
ปัดเสวตร หรือ ปัดตลอด ตัวมีสีดำเป็นพื้น ตั้งแต่จมูกไปตามแนวสันหลังถึงปลายหางมีสีขาว ตาเหลืองคล้ายกับพลอย หากเลี้ยงไว้จะมีความเจริญมากกว่าคนในสกุลเดียวกันและได้ลาภยศ
กระจอก ไม่กระจอกเหมือนชื่อ ลำตัวกลมมีสีดำ รอบปากมีสีขาว ตาสีเหลือง เลี้ยงแล้วเชื่อกันว่าจะได้ที่ดินเงินทอง ไพร่ก็จะได้เป็นเจ้านายคน
สิงหเสพย์ หรือ โสงหเสพย์ ลำตัวมีสีดำ ที่ปาก รอบคอ จมูกมีสีขาว ตาสีเหลือง ท่าทางเดินสง่าเหมือนสิงโต เลี้ยงแล้วมีสิริมงคล
การเวก ลำตัวสีดำ จมูกสีขาว ตาเป็นประกายสีทอง เชื่อกันว่าภายใน 7 เดือนที่ได้มาเลี้ยงจะได้ยศศักดิ์และลาภจำนวนมาก
จตุบท ตัวสีดำ เท้าทั้งสี่มีสีขาว ตาสีเหลืองเหมือนดอกโสน เชื่อว่าให้คุณกับคนเลี้ยง แต่ไม่เหมาะกับคนทั่วไป สมควรเลี้ยงแก่บุคคลชั้นสูงหรือราชินิกูลเท่านั้น
แซมเสวตร มีขนสีดำแซมขาว มีขนบางและสั้น รูปร่างเพรียว มีนัยน์ตาดั่งหิ่งห้อย เลี้ยงดีมีคุณหนักหนา จงเร่งหามาเลี้ยงเทอญอย่าแคลงสงสัย

แมวร้ายให้โทษ 6 ชนิด

ทุพลเพศ มีขนสีขาว ดวงตาสีแดงดั่งโลหิตทาตาไว้ มีนิสัยไม่ดีชอบลักขโมยปลาไปกินทุกคำคืน ใครเลี้ยงไว้จะให้โทษไม่เป็นสุขเกิดความเดือดร้อนแรงผลาญ
พรรณพยัคฆ์ หรือ ลายเสือ มีขนลายเหมือนเสือ ลักษณะขนเหมือนชุบด้วยเกลือกับแกลบ มีนัยน์ตาสีแดงเจือสีเปือกตม มีเสียงร้องเหมือนเสียงผีโป่งร้องอยู่ตามป่าเขา ถือว่าเป็นแมวให้โทษอีกชนิดหนึ่ง
ปีศาจ เป็นแมวที่กินลูกตัวเอง ออกลูกมากี่ตัวกินหมด ลักษณะขนสาก ตัวผอม หนังยาน โบราณจัดเป็นแมวร้ายอย่านำมาเลี้ยงไว้
หิณโทษ เป็นแมวนำมาซึ่งสิ่งเลวร้าย นำภัยพิบัติมาสู่บ้าน ใครเลี้ยงไว้จะไม่เป็นมงคล ออกลูกมามักจะมีลูกตายอยู่ในท้อง
กอบเพลิง เป็นแมวที่ลึกลับชอบซ่อนตัวหลบหลีกผู้คน พอมันเห็นคนมันจะเดินหรือรีบวิ่งหนี ใครเลี้ยงไว้จะมีโทษถึงตัว
เหน็บเสนียด มีลักษณะเหมือนค่าง ชอบเอาหางขดซ่อนไว้ใต้ก้นเสมอ มีรูปร่างพิกลพิการ อย่าเลี้ยงไว้ในบ้านจะทำให้เสียชื่อเสียงและเกียรติยศ

ขาวมณี

ส่วน ขาวมณี หรือ ขาวปลอด นั้นถึงแม้ไม่มีปรากฏในตำราแมวไทย เพราะเชื่อว่าเพิ่งถือกำเนิดในต้นยุครัตนโกสินทร์นี่เอง แต่ก็จัดว่าเป็นแมวไทยมงคลด้วยเหมือนกัน

Catnip for cat หญ้าชนิดหนึ่ง (Nepeta cataria),

เป็นพืชของวงสมุนไพรหอมมิ้นท์.

- อาการหลักๆของโรคนี้ มี 2 แบบ คือ

* แบบแห้ง (non-effusive)

- ส่วนใหญ่ที่พบ มักจะเป็นแบบเปียก คือ มีของเหลวสะสมในช่องท้อง ,ช่องอก สังเกตุท้องจะโต แมวจะมีอาการหายใจลำบาก
- แบบแห้งอาการจะเป็นอย่างช้าๆ ไม่ค่อยมีของเหลวสะสม แต่จะซึม น้ำหนักลด โลหิตจาง เป็นไข้
-อาจพบอาการไตวาย โรคของระบบประสาท หรือโรคตา

การรักษา
- ยังไม่มีการรักษาที่ได้ผล โดยมากรักษาตามอาการเพื่อยืดชีวิต โดยให้ยาปฏิชีวนะ ,สเตียรอยด์, cyclophosphamide, interferon,ยาต้านไวรัสต่างๆ รวมทั้งให้สารอาหารและสารน้ำ แต่ผลที่ได้ยังไม่ดี

การควบคุมโรค
- แยกสัตว์ป่วยออกจากสัตว์ปกติ
- ไม่ควรปล่อยแมวไปเที่ยวนอกบ้าน เพราะอาจติดโรคได้
- ไม่เลี้ยงแมวหนาแน่นจนเกินไป
- ฉีดวัคซนเป็นประจำ

การป้องกันโรค
- ปัจจุบันมีวัคซีนหยอดจมูก ในแมวอายุ ตั้งแต่ 16 สัปดาห์ขึ้นไป 2 ครั้ง ห่างกัน 3-4 สัปดาห์ และทำซ้ำทุกปี

** แมวที่มีโอกาสเป็นโรคเยื่อบุช่องท้องอักเสบติดต่อ
-- ได้แก่ แมวอายุน้อยกว่า 2 ปี และแมวอายุมากกว่า 10 ปี แมวที่สุขภาพไม่ดี หรือแมวที่ป่วยเป็นโรคอื่นๆอยู่แล้ว

** การทำลายเชื้อโคโรนาไวรัส
-- เชื้อไวรัสนี้อยู่ในสิ่งแวดล้อมได้หลายสัปดาห์ แต่ก็ถูกทำลายได้ง่ายด้วยน้ำยาทำความสะอาดและยาฆ่าเชื้อต่างๆ

It is caused by Feline Infectious Peritonitis Virus (FIPV), which is a mutation of Feline Enteric Coronavirus (FECV/FeCoV). Experts do not always agree on the specifics of FIP. However, the most common theory is that the normally benign FECV mutates into FIPV. The mutated virus has the ability to invade and grow in certain white blood cells, namely macrophages. The immune system's response causes an intense inflammatory reaction in the containing tissues. Fewer than 1 in 20 cats survive the contraction of this disease, however its incidence rate is roughly 1 in 5000 for households with one or two cats. [1]

Transmission and infection
FECV is very common, especially in places where large groups of cats are kept together (animal shelters, catteries, etc). Cats become infected by inhaling or ingesting the virus. The most commonly cited transmission source is feces, although contaminated surfaces such as food dishes and clothing can transmit the virus as well.

Despite the prevalence of FECV, most infected cats do not develop FIP. Often exposure to FECV produces no clinical signs, but may cause a mild upper respiratory disease. Therefore, a cat without clinical signs may still be an FECV carrier and may pass the virus to another cat. In any cat infected with FECV there is a chance that the virus may mutate into the FIP causing form. This chance is increased for cats that are immune compromised including very young and very old cats. There is also thought to be a genetic component to susceptibility to viral mutation.

FIP effusive fluidThere are two main forms of FIP: effusive (wet) and non-effusive (dry). While both types are fatal, the effusive form is more common (60-70% of all cases are wet) and progresses more rapidly than the non-effusive form.

Effusive (wet)
The hallmark clinical sign of effusive FIP is the accumulation of fluid within the abdomen or chest, which can cause breathing difficulties. Other symptoms include lack of appetite, fever, weight loss, jaundice, and diarrhea.

Non-effusive (dry)
Dry FIP will also present with lack of appetite, fever, jaundice, diarrhea, and weight loss, but there will not be an accumulation of fluid. Although typically a cat with dry FIP will show ocular or neurological signs. For example it may become hard to walk or stand up, the cat may become paralyzed over time. There could also be a loss of sight.

Diagnosis
Cytology of FIP-induced fluid showing neutrophils, macrophages and lymphocytesThe signs associated with FIP are often non-specific, which can cause diagnosis to be very difficult. A definitive diagnosis requires examination of affected tissues for the FIP virus. This is usually performed post-mortem, but can be performed via tissue biopsy. Histopathological examination of tissue samples is usually the cheapest and most reliable available diagnostic test. A PCR test is also available for use with fluid or certain tissue samples, however, its efficacy is currently being reviewed.

More commonly, a presumptive diagnosis is made based on clinical signs and evaluation of abdominal or chest fluid, if available. Fluid caused by FIP tends to be yellow in color and have elevated protein levels. Blood tests can also be performed to bolster a presumptive diagnosis by looking for coronavirus antibodies and elevated protein. Coronavirus titers are not considered diagnostic in and of themselves due to the ubiquity of FeCoV, but may be used in conjunction with clinical symptoms to make an FIP diagnosis. It is important to note that cats with higher titres of FCoV are no more likely to develop FIP than those with lower titres. Cats with no exposure to FCoV cannot develop FIP.

Treatment
As there is no cure for FIP, treatment is symptomatic and palliative. Typically the owner is advised to make the cat as comfortable as possible until it becomes clear that the cat is suffering. Prednisone or other immunosuppressive drugs prescribed by a veterinarian may help to prolong the cat's life for a few weeks or months, but may be contraindicated in certain cases due to concomitant infection(s). Effusive FIP usually progresses too rapidly for any meaningful therapy to be attempted.

Quarantine is not necessary as FIP is not truly an infectious disease. Feline Enteric Coronavirus is shed in the feces and can be passed on to other cats, however, it is the mutated form of the virus that leads to FIP. This form is only found in macrophages and is therefore not shed and not contagious.

As FIP signs can be easily overlooked, it is highly advised to have your cat examined by a licensed vet at any signs of chronic diarrhea, unusual lethargy or respiratory infection. While treatment will only be symptomatic, it may prolong the life of the cat as well as soften the blow to the owner.

The Cat Fanciers' Association has implemented a new procedure to register kittens sold with a "not for breeding" (NFB) restriction. Kitten registrations will be processed automatically as NFB unless YOU provide a "key" to unlock our software. The "key" is a 5-digit computer generated random number, called a "Litter-PIN #", which will be printed only on the litter registration certificate. Each litter you register will be assigned a different PIN # valid only for that litter. Our staff will not have access to the PIN #. In order for kittens to be registered WITH breeding rights, you must provide the Litter- PIN # to our staff by entering it on the individual registration application (blue slip). Without the PIN #, our software will permit only NFB registrations.

For Breeding = Insert Litter-PIN # on blue slip

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
I have blue slips from litters I previously registered. Does the new process apply to them?
No. Previously issued blue slips must be completed as directed on the form itself. Check the appropriate box in Section E and enter or obtain the required signature.

What are the chances that someone could guess the correct PIN #?
The odds are 100,000 to 1 that someone will guess the correct number. If you are concerned about this, enter a large "X" in the PIN # box. Our staff will not accept a PIN # written over an "X".

What do I do if I misplace the PIN #?
Contact our office and a replacement litter certificate containing the PIN # assigned to that litter will be sent to you at no charge. Pin numbers will NOT be given out over the phone or via email.

I am selling two kittens from the same litter to the same individual - one to be "NFB" and the other as "For Breeding". How can I be sure the purchaser won't enter the PIN # on the blue slip for the NFB kitten?
Invalidate the PIN # box on the blue slip for the NFB kitten by placing a large "X" in the box.

I need to replace a blue slip for a litter which was registered before pin numbers were assigned. What will I receive?
The blue slip you receive will require a PIN # if the cat is to be registered as a breeding cat. The blue slip will be accompanied by a litter certificate containing the PIN # for that litter.

I want to register a cat as NFB using the litter application but I won't have a PIN # yet for the litter. What do I do?
Check the "not for breeding" box for the cat being registered using Section E of the litter application. Since the green registration certificate will be returned to you, you will be certain the cat has been registered correctly per your instructions.
