German born but Fayetteville raised Jermaine Cole has seen his star rise from street rapper cum-University Grad to Jay Z prodigy and Roc Nation flag bearer.

His 1st mixtape, the Come Up came up rough around the edges but still showing glipses of the potential we now see. His sophomore mixtape effort, the Warm up, peaked the interest of A&R folk across America in particular the interest and finally a deal from Jay.

Since then the kid has been prepping for his debut LP, dropping hot fire tracks, freestyles and snippets like a trail of sweets leading us to what is in my opinion going to be one of the Hip Hop albums of the year.

Over the last two years it seems as though mainstream UK Hip Hop, Soul and R’n’B took a synthesized turn for the worse. Week after week our homegrown talent churned out forgettable lyrics over rehashed dance mixes and a pre set drum beats.

For all the crap, there are a few Brits that have been out there for a while but only just beginning to bubble beneath that mainstream surface. Slowly but surely we are getting some authentic singers that sound like they are deviating from the line of best auto tune fit.

There are 5 reasons that I keep hope alive for UK R’nB, they are Emieli Sande, Alex Mills, Tawiah, Elviin and Bluey Robinson. Check out why you need to keep tabs on these guys (videos after the jump)

I first blogged about Jay almost two years back, (yes I’m that fly) when I first heard Renaissance man. Since then I’ve missed one of his London gigs and his surprise set at Lovebox. I finally got to see the man perform this week at Cargo and he did not disappoint.

Ripping through pretty much everything from his Victory mixtape Jay had the crowd hanging onto every lyric like a preacher man on Sunday morning. Like the Pied Piper, he led his fans onto the stage, not content with the masses on stage he dived into the crowd to end his set amongst the people, who proceeded to circle him like piranas.

The man possesses the intricate wordplay of Big L and the gravitas of Biggie, together you have a potentially deadly combination of Hip Hop greatness.

I left soon after he departed but evidence of my attendance can be seen below, ‘Exhibit D’

The Catablog of Music first found it’s feet back in January 08 as nothing more than tiny little note of music recommendations on Facebook.

We dipped our toes in the blogging pond, paddled for a while, got out, dried off and went home.

Today we’re taking another dive into the game. What will become of the second bounce of the ball is yet to be seen, but we’ll definitely have fun recommending great old and new music, that you may or may not have heard as well as some other music related things to look and listen to.

It may be daily, weekly or monthly but the Catablog will definitely have something that will peak your interest. For now we’ll leave you with 4 Catablog Spotify playlists for your listening pleasure…
