New Zero-Day "Shortcut Worm" Vulnerability Affects All Versions of Windows

F-Secure advises companies to establish a USB Device Policy and to migrate from Windows XP Service Pack 2 as soon as possible

SAN JOSE, Calif. – July 20, 2010 – Microsoft published Security Advisory 2286198 on Friday of last week, confirming the existence of a critical vulnerability in all supported versions of Windows. The new zero-day vulnerability is easily exploitable via USB storage devices, network shares or remote WebDAV shares. All that is required for exploitation is for the contents of the USB device to be viewed in Windows Explorer. Specially crafted shortcut (.lnk) files are allowed to execute code when the shortcut's icon is loaded to the GUI. An exploit targeting this vulnerability is currently in limited use and additional exploits are very likely in the coming weeks.

The shortcut vulnerability was discovered during investigation of the Stuxnet rootkit, which has been used in targeted attacks aimed at Siemens SCADA systems. Such systems are used for supervisory control and data acquisition in industrial facilities such as power plants. The shortcut file used in this case is detected as Exploit:W32/WormLink.A.

The situation is now more critical because a publicly available proof of concept was posted to several exploit database sites over the weekend. Proof of concept exploit code is now in-the-wild and F-Secure fully expects virus writers to utilize this method of attack in the near future.

Sean Sullivan, Security Advisor at F-Secure, said, “This shortcut worm is very dangerous and the seriousness of the situation will increase until Microsoft releases a fix. And because Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 is no longer supported, even the fix won't fully resolve the issue. This is a major concern as F-Secure’s research shows that SP2 is still being used by many organizations.”

F-Secure strongly recommends that companies and organizations migrate to Windows XP Service Pack 3 as soon as possible, or implement Microsoft's suggested workarounds.

Additionally, organizations need to create or review their USB device policy.

“This danger can be mitigated with best practices. If a company doesn't have a security policy regarding USB devices, they're at risk. Those that do have a policy should review it and make sure that it's being followed. This is time critical as summer vacation season is approaching,” says Sullivan.

Because of the recession, summer camp is now a luxury for many parents. Meanwhile, the job market for teens hasn’t been this tight in decades. So you can bet that your kids will be spending countless hours Facebooking, YouTubing and Twittering away this summer.

You can also be sure cybercriminals will be hitting your PC with every phishing scam, malicious link and malware they can imagine. At the same time, social networks have opened your kids’ lives to world, creating privacy and safety concerns that your parents never had to deal with.

To protect your PC and your kids, here are five things you need to know before you leave for work tomorrow.

1. Links are not your friends
With one click on a Facebook link, your PC could be crippled. Cybercriminals are aware that many of the more than 400 million users of Facebook have plenty of time to kill. That’s why they’re spreading their scams with links described as “The Sexiest Video EVER” or “You’ll never believe this LOL.” When a link like that appears on a Facebook wall posted by a friend, it takes incredible will power not to click it. So repeat this mantra: If a link looks too good to be true, it is. Of course, this advice won’t always work. That's why you should go ahead and bookmark F-Secure’s free Browsing Protection. If your son or daughter feels they must click on a sensational link, have them check it out first.

2. Make it your job to arm your PC with the most recent updates
If you don’t keep your system software up to date, you risk inviting predators into your PC. 3. Just say no to installing software

Make sure your kids know not to share their private information—email addresses, phone numbers, home addresses—in public. They should also avoid posting information about their schedule, especially vacations. Tell them that they aren’t to post when their parents are home or not. On a social network, you can never be sure whom exactly you are sharing your information with, or which of your friends might share your information to the whole world. Your kids need to know that no matter how private their settings tell them they are, anything they post on a social network should be considered as public as the front page of a newspaper—if they know what that is.

5. If you can’t beat them, join them
You should know which social networks your children are on. If you have the time, it's a good idea to start a profile on the site and become their friend or follower. It doesn’t take long, maybe five minutes per site. This way, you’ll get a sense of what your kids are sharing with whom. You can’t watch your child every minute. But if they get the sense that you could be watching, it can only help them think before they click or post.

The Harbor has been secured.

HostGator is now Safe Harbor Certified. Safe Harbor is the name of a policy agreement established between the United States Department of Commerce and the European Union (E.U.) in November 2000 to regulate the way that U.S. companies export and handle the personal data (such as names and addresses) of European citizens. The agreement is a policy compromise set up in response to a European directive that differed from traditional business procedures for U.S. companies dealing with the E.U. In 1998, the E.U. established the European Commission Directive on Data Protection, which prohibited data transfer to non-European countries that did not adhere to stringent criteria. In effect, because the guidelines were very strict, they made it illegal to transfer most citizens' personal data outside of Europe.

If you are still awake after reading that, let me summarize this for you. Basically this means that we follow strict privacy rules agreed upon by the EU(European Union) and US and allows personal data to be transferred. We figured our overseas customers would be interested to know that we are now certified. (This really is a big deal).

Staffing is one of our biggest problems here at HostGator, and has been since our Boca days. We hire 24 new employees every two weeks and this is simply not enough to cover our expanding customer base while maintaining the customer service HostGator is known for. Having two support centers will help this as we will now have two cities to pull candidates from and more space. We will basically be doubling our staff and are looking to have around 300-400 employees in Austin within the next year or so. We currently have 387 employees here at our Houston headquarters.

Don’t Adjust Your Set! That Green Tint is Just Your New Energy Efficient TV
As energy-efficient appliances have become all the rage in the kitchen and laundry room in recent years, the nation’s media and living rooms have quietly been harboring energy guzzlers that are finally getting some attention. Televisions, especially the big, flat-screen varieties, have turned into one of the biggest consumers of electricity in the average American home. Watching television currently accounts for about 10% of a home's electricity consumption, and if left unchecked, that level is projected to rise by an additional 8% a year!
The California Energy Commission is not taking those numbers lightly, and is currently looking to impose the nation's first energy-efficiency requirements for flat-screen televisions. The new rules proposed by the Energy Commission would force manufacturers to produce television sets that use a third less electricity by 2011, and halve the amount by 2013.
The new standards are expected to save consumers around $18 to $30 per year in utility bills for each television in their home. Applied to every home in California, we’re talking enough wattage saved to power more than 850,000 single-family homes! According to the Energy Commission report, Californians would save $8.1 billion over 10 years.
Not everyone is pleased with the proposed cutbacks. The Consumer Electronics Association is fighting the proposal. They’re claiming the new rules will prohibit the sale of every plasma screen larger than 60 inches, it will stifle innovation, and might even cost some Californians jobs. They also maintain that the new rules are necessary because the voluntary EnergyStar program is already encouraging increased efficiency.
While some TV makers agree with the Consumer Electronics Association’s stance, not all do. Many believe these levels of energy efficiency are just the next step in the ever-evolving technology of TV sets, and don’t find the proposed standards onerous at all. Vizio Inc., producer of both LCD and plasma televisions, says it would support an even faster timeline to energy efficiency standards. 3M, also a maker of flat screen technology, supports the change as well. Ken Lowe, president of Vizio Inc., said technology already available for adjusting a screen's brightness was one way manufacturers could bring down the amount of power used by TV sets. And that’s just the beginning. The industry is already headed in the direction of the commission’s recommendations.

You don’t have to be from California to enjoy energy savings and a green conscience right now. Many television makers such as Vizio, Inc. are already doing their part to make a greener set. Vizio is producing mercury free sets that exceed current Energy Star Guidelines by 50%. All of Vizio’s 22” HDTVs use less power than a 60W light bulb, and their 19” HDTV uses less than a 25W bulb. Gator Happenings

Well, it's been quite a month here at HostGator. We had what we thought at first was a very cruel late April fools joke played on us. HostGator purchased a 102,000 Sqft building in Austin, TX as we have simply ran out of space here in our 4 story Houston headquarters. There are cubes on top of cubes it seems here and we are now finishing up construction on our 3^rd, yes 3^rd additional parking lot! We were set to close on the new Austin building April 20^th, at that time we sent our money to the mortgage company and waited on our bank to send the remaining amount (4 Million USD). The mortgage company received OUR money, however our bank seemed to have sent 4 Million to an unknown source... April fools!?!? I'm proud to say we've since figured out “the case of the missing 4 million” and our office building in Austin is now secured. Blog post about the entire issue is in works, so stay tuned.

We need new gators!

As mentioned above, we're growing so fast that we cannot hire enough people. You would think it would be simple, with so many people out there that use the Internet and build websites, to find qualified employees. We need our customers help! New Swamp in Austin, TX

So lets talk a little about Austin since I've brought it up. Our Houston headquarters is 25,000 SQFT, which is mostly now all cubes for our sales/support team. If you have ever been to Houston you know that most of the roads always have on-going construction. This is true with our Houston headquarters as well. Since I've been here (2007) we have been knocking walls down, moving offices and running cables to make room for more employees.

The time has come where we must expand, and what better place then the heart of Texas.. Austin! Only a few of our employees and members of management will be leaving Houston, including myself. It's sad to leave what we've helped build here but we must take what we've learned in setting this office up and continue it in Austin. The Houston headquarters will always be here, this is simply an extension of our support department. There will be a nice office tour blog post as soon as we get all the dust settles in Austin.
