How Health, Fitness, and Dopamine Saved My Entrepreneurial Sanity

Being an entrepreneur is amazing… and chaotic. You’re constantly reinventing the wheel, juggling projects, clients, deadlines, and that ever-present pressure to grow. Some days it feels like you’re building a plane while flying it — and let’s be honest, the turbulence never stops.

Six months ago, I sat down and made a vision board dedicated to my health, fitness, and overall wellbeing. At the time, it felt like a tiny commitment in the middle of a million to-do lists. Fast forward to today, and the progress is real. I can feel it in every fiber of my being.

Here’s the surprising part: I’ve never been a fan of medications. I tried all the options — therapy, supplements, routines — and yet, the thing that consistently works for me is exercise. Specifically, my Ashtanga yoga practice, guided by my amazing mentor Roberta via Zoom from Brazil, has been transformative.

Adding to this journey, I joined a fantastic community gym, which allowed me to meet incredible people and truly flip the switch. Training five times a week, I’ve built consistency, motivation, and accountability — and in the process, I’ve become a better version of myself and still in progress.

Yoga and the gym have become my reset buttons. Some days it’s a short flow; other days it’s a full Ashtanga session or a sweat session at the gym. Every practice reminds me: I am capable. I am focused. I am in control — even when the entrepreneurial world seems to be moving at 200 mph.

One of the reasons I decided to revamp this blog — which now proudly marks almost 70K visitors — was to share this journey with all of you. I wanted to create a space that not only showcases design and lifestyle content but also celebrates personal growth, health, and the small victories that keep us moving forward as entrepreneurs. That dopamine hit? Game changer. My ADHD feels more manageable. My mind is clearer. My energy is higher. And yes, even the chaos of running a business seems a little less daunting.

So here’s my takeaway: being a business owner is tough. It challenges your patience, creativity, and sanity. But investing in your health and fitness, building a supportive community, and staying consistent isn’t just self-care — it’s a survival strategy. Dopamine, endorphins, and a strong body help keep the mind sharp enough to handle the chaos… and maybe even enjoy it a little.

To all my fellow entrepreneurs juggling everything at once: don’t underestimate the power of movement, mentorship, and community. Your body, mind, and business will thank you.

The New York School of Interior Design recently gave us a behind-the-scenes look at just that, taking us inside the creative minds of the people who transform city streets into seasonal spectacles.

On December 11th, NYSID hosted an inspiring lecture with top creative directors from major retail brands, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy’s, and W Diamond Group. The evening offered insights into the artistry, planning, and sheer dedication required to create traffic-stopping displays that delight millions each holiday season.

Meet the Visionaries

Harry Cunningham, SVP of Store Planning, Design, and Visual Merchandising at Saks Fifth Avenue, shared his journey from small-town Florida to New York, emphasizing that inspiration can be found everywhere—from subway cars to snow-laden tree branches. “I get to live my dream every day,” he said, reminding us that passion and perseverance make the impossible possible.

Paul Olszewski, Visual Director at Macy’s Herald Square, gave us an inside look at the theme for this year’s windows: “Believe.” Designed to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation, every letter written to Santa in Macy’s stores contributes to the cause. Olszewski explained how even the simplest ornament can be transformed into a magical experience, highlighting the intersection of design, storytelling, and technology—from interactive touchscreens to arcade-style cranes for visitors to play with.

Lighting can make or break a space—but with all the new LED options, understanding brightness can be confusing. Let’s clear it up!

Wattage vs Lumens: The Basics

Wattage measures energy consumption, not brightness.

Lumens measure actual light output.

In the old days of incandescent bulbs, higher watts meant brighter light. But with LEDs and CFLs, you can get the same or better brightness with much lower energy use.

Why Wattage Isn’t Everything

For example:

A 40W incandescent gives 380–460 lumens.

The same brightness? Only 4W with an LED or 9W with a CFL.

A 100W incandescent? About 1700–1800 lumens—but a 15W LED or 32W CFL can match it!

The lesson: don’t look at watts—look at lumens.

Why Lumens Matter

Lumens tell you how bright your light will be. For instance, a 150W incandescent produces roughly 2600 lumens. To get the same light:

Use a 25W LED

Or a 42W CFL

Higher lumens with lower wattage = more efficient, cost-effective lighting.

LEDs are directional, meaning they shine exactly where you need light—no wasted illumination.

When choosing solar lights, you need to consider both:

Wattage – how much energy the light will consume

Lumens – how bright it will be

Efficient LED lights mean longer battery life, better coverage, and lower costs.

Good morning!

I’m so happy to be back here writing again. This blog is truly where it all started—back when I was still in design school. Revisiting my older posts is like flipping through a photo album of my journey; it’s a reminder of the experiences, challenges, and lessons that shaped the designer (and person) I am today.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working on an incredible variety of projects—commercial, residential, big and small. And if there’s one truth that has become the foundation of my work, it’s this: every client is different, and every project is unique.

When a new client approaches me, the very first thing I do is… listen.
(If I could go back and tell my younger self one piece of advice, it would be that!)

I stop, breathe, and give my client the space to share everything—especially the frustrations they’ve felt living in their space for years. Why? Because no one understands the problems of a home better than the people who live in it. As designers, our job is to listen first, then create solutions that not only address those pain points but also elevate the beauty, comfort, and functionality of the space.

Here’s something I wish more people knew: a good designer isn’t just someone with great taste and a sharp eye for color. A good designer is a problem-solver, a space strategist, and a listener. Yes, our role is to create something beautiful, but it’s also to design a space that works beautifully for your life—every single day.

For me, inspiration often comes from nature. Every element in nature—color, form, texture, and balance—offers solutions if you’re willing to pay attention. That’s why I make time to step away, breathe, and recharge through yoga and meditation outdoors. A clear mind creates clearer designs.

One of the most important parts of working with a designer is trust. And here’s where I see many projects go sideways: too much interference.

Imagine this: You hire an artist whose work you admire to paint a canvas for you. Midway through, you stand beside them telling them which brush to use, which colors to pick, and exactly where to paint each stroke. The result? The work loses the very magic you admired in the first place.

It’s the same with design. You hire a professional for their expertise, creativity, and ability to bring your vision to life in a way that you couldn’t on your own. Micromanaging not only disrupts the process, it can also lower the quality of the end result.

Think about your own work—would you want someone sitting next to you all day, directing every move you make? Probably not.

A great designer will deliver a home that reflects you—only more refined, balanced, and beautiful than you imagined. And yes, there’s always room at the end to adjust and fine-tune together. But for the process to work, you have to trust the person you’ve hired.

So before you choose a designer, make sure you connect with their aesthetic and approach. Once you do, let them work their magic. After all, if you planned to do it all yourself, you wouldn’t have hired them in the first place.

When asked, “Thinking about your own life—what is the biggest challenge you personally face in your daily life today?”, women shared a variety of issues, with economic concerns and family responsibilities topping the list. Here are the top seven categories:

Three Things NOT to Do

1. Avoid Talking About Titles
No hiring manager can predict what title you’ll have in five years. Mentioning an overly ambitious title—like Director or Executive—can actually work against you. Focus on what you want to do and the value you hope to provide, rather than the title itself.

2. Never Say “I Don’t Know”
Honesty is good, but this answer signals a lack of vision and initiative. Employers want to see that you’re motivated to grow and contribute, not simply “go with the flow.” Showing that you’re invested in the role—and thinking about your future within it—instills confidence in your potential.

Welcome to our latest project! We’re excited to share some images and details from our most recent interiors—spaces designed with style, functionality, and personality in mind. We hope you enjoy this little tour!

Living Room

This living space was all about creating flow and interest. Previously, the furniture blocked the view, and the dining area felt awkwardly placed in the center. We repositioned everything to maximize natural light, create a cohesive flow, and highlight the stunning view.

The standout elements? Elegant swivel chairs with pleated backs and brass legs, upholstered in nude velvet. These chairs are perfect for entertaining, stylish yet functional, and connect the living, dining, and kitchen areas seamlessly.

Kitchen

For the modern kitchen, we added wooden stools that pair beautifully with a curated selection of artwork. Inspired by the natural scenery outside, we introduced a striking piece to a previously blank wall, instantly adding interest and refinement.

Practicality meets beauty here—marble shelves were installed for easy access to seasonings and kitchen essentials, keeping the space organized while maintaining a luxurious feel.

Dining Area

We chose a sophisticated blue velvet chair set paired with a white round table featuring a brass base. The goal? A breakfast space where you can enjoy the view while feeling elegant and relaxed. It’s all about blending comfort, style, and functionality.

Studio / Office / Guest Room

This multifunctional space needed to serve as an office, studio, and guest room for a young musician and YouTuber. We designed a white lacquer desk that doubles as a piano station while leaving space for study and makeup.

The backdrop was key—it had to be powerful yet cohesive with the two black side tables. Everything tells a story and adds drama to the room. A trundle twin bed was added for guests, keeping the space open, airy, and versatile.

Master Bedroom

Our goal in the master bedroom was to create a serene, luxurious retreat. The centerpiece is a tufted linen bed, layered with soft, inviting fabrics that make the space feel warm and comfortable.

Soft textures and muted tones were paired with elegant accents to create a room that’s both sophisticated and relaxing. Plush bedding, delicate throws, and coordinating pillows add depth and interest, while maintaining a cozy, lived-in feel.

Every detail—from bedside tables to lighting—was chosen to complement the softness of the fabrics, creating a harmonious, restful atmosphere that makes the master bedroom truly feel like a sanctuary.

As The Sunrise Project wrapped up in New York City, designer Catarine Wright shares an inside look at this charitable, community-driven initiative that concluded in 2017.

The P.S. 171 Library Pilot

The pilot took place at PS/IS 171 Patrick Henry Preparatory School (19 East 103rd St, New York, NY 10029) from July 1 to September 6, 2016.

By partnering with suppliers, nonprofits, donors, volunteers, and the design community, The Sunrise Project created a transformative change in the school’s library, reaching far beyond the room’s walls.

Impact Beyond Aesthetics

The project wasn’t just about visual transformation—it fostered social and educational growth. Students participated in:

Today, I’m thrilled to share one of my most exciting projects—a stunning penthouse on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where I had the pleasure of collaborating with the esteemed James Rixner. This space presented unique design challenges, particularly the soaring 25-foot living room ceilings, and our goal was to create a warm, inviting environment that would impress any potential investor.

Designing for staging requires a careful balance: highlighting the architectural features while creating a welcoming, livable space. In this project, the tall windows and stately columns were left crisp white to emphasize the grandeur and structure of the room. Against this backdrop, we introduced large, vibrant paintings that created a curated gallery experience, perfectly paired with the low, elegant Roche Bobois swivel chairs for comfortable seating.

One of the standout features is the chandelier, a sculptural masterpiece suspended asymmetrically throughout the ceiling. Its intricate metalwork and cage-like shades act as functional art, beautifully linking the space with the grand piano below—creating a dramatic, cohesive focal point.

Every decision in this penthouse was intentional, designed to maximize the space’s potential while highlighting its sophistication and personality. Whether you’re considering staging, redesigning, or creating your dream home, attention to detail and thoughtful design make all the difference.

Every year, Iris Danker, founder of Holiday House, brings together the most talented interior designers in the country to transform the stunning Mansion on 63rd Street in New York City into a showcase of elegance, creativity, and philanthropy.

Iris is not only a visionary interior designer but also an 18-year breast cancer survivor. After overcoming this disease, she combined her two passions: interior design and charitable giving. Holiday House supports the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, raising crucial funds to help advance research and provide support for women battling this disease. Iris’s dedication and vision continue to inspire the interior design community and beyond.

One of the standout rooms of Holiday House 2015 was the Scotland-inspired space designed by James Rixner Inc.. This room celebrates the elegance, culture, and classic splendor of Scotland, infused with Rixner’s signature touch of sophistication and warmth.

Working with James on this project was a dream come true. From selecting luxurious fabrics and furnishings to collaborating with Scottish artisans and coordinating with every partner involved, the process was as rewarding as the result.

The room’s artistic centerpiece features two stunning canvases by John Schuster, a Native American artist who spent time in Scotland and drew inspiration from its skies. His sensibility with color and scale perfectly complemented the room’s overall design, creating a space that feels both authentic and inviting.

Every fabric, from the upholstered goods by C.R. Laine to textiles sourced from the finest Scottish mills, was carefully chosen to reflect the room’s story. Every detail, from furnishings to accents, contributes to a cohesive space that is both elegant and deeply personal.
