With a silent film up for a plethora of nominations this year, the 84th Academy Awards undoubtedly has a retro feel.

And as the stars stepped out onto the red carpet it appeared that Oscar fashion also made a return to the black and white era.

Angelina Jolie lead the way stepping out in a dramatic dark velvet gown which boasted a thigh-high split to devastating effect.

They are all white: Gwyneth Paltrow looked incredible in her oyster coloured Tom Ford dress with caped detail, while Cameron Diaz showed off her figure in a Gucci gown which boasted a simple basque with a dramatic train

The actress, 36, arrived on the red carpet with partner Brad Pitt and she looked stunning in the simple strapless gown which she had teamed with peep-toe heels and a flash of red lipstick.

Brad, who was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role, had brought along his parents Jane and William Pitt, and Angelina was seen holding their hands as the group made their way up the carpet.

While Angelina had opted to show off her statement look in the Atelier Versace piece, other stars decided to step out in light and white gowns - which have proved popular throughout the awards season this year.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz were just two stars to take on the trend, with the Contagion star showing off simple lines in Tom Ford.
Paltrow's dress boasted capped sleeves and an elegant cape detail which hung off her shoulders for a statement look.
Diaz stepped out the strapless Gucci gown which displayed a simple body but offered drama in the train with a tiered ruffled hemline and flashes of sequin embellishment.
Jennifer Lopez, who graced the red carpet without her toyboy boyfriend Casper Smart, showed off her curves in a plunging cream dress by Zuhair Murad.
The American Idol judge teamed the gown, which also boasted a dipped back neckline, with a large bun piled on top of her head.

The 23-year-old Help star looked stunning in a deep pink Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown which boasted a large bow around the neck.
Her co-star and Best Actress in A Supporting Role nominee Jessica Chastain looked incredible in a flowing black gown with intricate gold detail by Alexander McQueen which she teamed with $2million worth of Harry Winston jewels.

Berenice Bejo, leading lady of silent film sensation The Artist, was another to add a first touch of glamour on the red carpet - and was sporting red hair.
Berenice, who stepped out in Elie Saab couture, told MailOnline: 'It's red for a film role. In fact for two film parts I have to have my hair red so it will be like this for a few weeks.'

She was escorted by husband Michel Hazanavicius who directed The Artist.

Nominee George Clooney arrived on the red carpet looking dapper in an Armani suit but his accessory came in the form of Stacy Keibler who looked stunning in a golden gown by Marchesa, an outfit that resembled the award statues.

Michelle Williams, who is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role stepped out onto carpet in a Louis Vuitton dress in a bright coral hue, which boasted tiered detail around the skirt.

It's a nervous night ahead for George Clooney as he goes up for Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards.

But whatever happens, it looks like the actor is going home with an Oscar after his girlfriend Stacy Keibler 's dress appeared to have been inspired by the statuette.

Attending her first Academy Awards on Clooney's arm, Keibler looked stunning in a gold Grecian-style Marchesa creation.

The former wrestler, 32, teamed her floor-length gown with matching high heeled sandals, Judith Leiber clutch bag, drop Lorraine Schwartz earrings and her golden hair wavy and swept to the side.

Meanwhile, her boyfriend, 50, looked suitably dapper in his black Armani suit.

Clooney is up for Best Actor for The Descendants and Best Adapted Screenplay for Ides Of March as this year's ceremony.

The actor has already got one Academy Award to his belt - Best Supporting Actor for Syriana in 2006.

He's also been nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Good Night And Good Luck in 2005.

Talking to reporters on the red carpet, Clooney joked his 5ft 11in girlfriend - who would have been even taller in her heels - had hit her head on a blimp on the way into the Kodak Theater.

Ahead of the ceremony, an excited Keibler tweeted: 'We are off!!!! I feel like I'm going to the prom. #oscars SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!'

Keibler's Oscars date came a day after she posed for a shoot with Vanity Fair magazine.

Since she started dating Clooney in August, Keibler's stock in Hollywood has risen sharply.

Clooney has previously attended the Oscars with Italian TV presenter Elisabetta Canalis (2010) and Las Vegas waitress Sarah Larson (2008).

She is hoping to win no fewer than three gold medals at the Olympics – but cyclist Victoria Pendleton took a rare break from training to reveal an athletic body in peak condition to take on the challenge.

Briefly putting aside her bicycle to adopt a more sultry pose, Victoria, 31, showed off the powerful legs that play such an important role in her cycling prowess.

Victoria won gold for the individual sprint at the Beijing Games in 2008, and this year, besides the individual race, she hopes to take gold in the team sprint and keirin event.

She attended the Brit Awards in midweek but did not go on to any of the parties after the event. In the run-up to the Olympics, her training schedule is punishing, with six hours a day in the gym.

She combines squats and weight-lifting with sprint and hill training on her bike.

And the hard work has paid off – as is proved by this picture, originally shot for FHM magazine and made available to a newspaper for the first time.

A week ago, Victoria sped around the new Olympic Velodrome in a world-record time to claim, with Jess Varnish, Britain’s first gold in the women’s team sprint event at the Track World Cup.

See the fashions and hear live interviews with the stars as they arrive for the 84th Annual Academy Awards ceremony.

The live streaming will begin from 3pm in America and from 11pm UK time. The celebrity arrivals and interviews will run until 4.30pm (PST) and half past midnight in the UK.

Billy Crystal will host this years awards ceremony which is the biggest event of the year for the motion picture industry. This will be Crystal's ninth time hosting the awards after first taking on the job in 1990.

Nominations this year for best picture include The Artist, The Descendants, The Help and War Horse. Best actor and actress nominees include Glenn Close for Albert Nobbs, Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady, George Clooney for The Descendants and Gary Oldman for his role as George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

It must be a hard job, but someone has to make sure The Saturdays are all wired up.

One technician just couldn't get enough as he fitted Frankie Sandford with her microphone, getting a little too friendly around the chest area.

But footballer boyfriend Wayne Bridge shouldn't be too worried as the mystery man's hands were soon banished from Frankie's personal space as the group got on with the important business of shooting their next video.

Right there! As Frankie gets wired, one technician is perhaps a little too helpful with her microphone

The Saturdays were shooting in London and every member has gushed about how excited they are about shooting together.

But although the group were speaking about how happy they were about being together again, one mini member won't be making an appearance in the video.

Una Healy has revealed her blossoming baby bump will be edited out of the video, sparking a mixed reaction from fans.

'And I am proud of my bump but ill be even more proud of her when she is out, its not like she's going to be in utero forever!'

Awards season has been well populated with an array of gorgeous gowns worn by some of the best known actresses in Hollywood.

But Gwyneth Paltrow went against the grain earlier tonight as she arrived at a party wearing a black jumpsuit with a plunging neckline.

The 39-year-old actress looked stunning in the daring number which was slashed to her navel at the Women in Film 2012 Academy Awards Party in West Hollywood.

The Iron man actress managed to carry off the unusual outfit, which she teamed with gold and black heels and a long gold necklace.

Gwyneth was joined by a slew of stunning stars, who mostly plumped for more conventional dresses.

The Help actresses, who are favourites to win, looked far from nervous as they stepped out on the red carpet.

The stars were out once again tonight live on BBC 1 to put their dignity aside for the sake of Let's Dance for Sports Relief 2012.

Eddie 'the Eagle' Edwards, comedian and actor Miles Jupp, Shameless star Alice Barry, stand up comedian Ava Vidal, and Amy Childs and Harry Derbidge all took to the stage in the hope of impressing judges Vic Reeves, Ian Lee and Rufus Hound.

Ski jumper Eddie received the most public votes, and was immediately guaranteed a place in the final, while comedian and actor Miles Jupp beat Amy and Herry in the judges' vote to receive the second available spot.

Nevertheless, though Amy and Harry didn't quite make the cut, it's safe to say they gave the most memorable performance of the night.

... but it was Eddie 'the eagle' Edwards who won the audience vote for his turn as Austin Powers in tonight's installment of Let's Dance for Sports Relief

During a preamble scene shot in Amy's salon, the pair chatted about their careers, with Amy confessing: 'At the moment I'm like mega famous, but I'm starting to run out of options in the reality genre, and I'm starting to feel my profile dip.'

There was no doubt that the pair smashed their routine to Me Against the Music by Madonna and Britney Spears.

Amy and Harry took on the roles of Madonna and Britney, replicating the music video exactly, complete with elaborate props- and also featuring an Essex-style interlude during which Amy 'beautified' her cousin in a salon chair.

Joining hosts Steve and Alex Jones, Harry gushed: I absolutely loved it,. Thank you so much everyone.

Rufus opened the commentary, with an enthusiastic: 'Absolutely brilliant.'

Ian added: 'It was fantastic, and it incorporated sex with a wall, which is one of my favouite things. Harry- I think a lot of people will be asking themselves some pretty serious questions'

Vic Reeves quipped: 'Both ladies were enchanting.'

The grand climax came when a full band arrived onto the stage, marching along for the final few seconds.

'I loved every minute of it' Eddie enthused breathlessly as he arrived at the judging panel.

Rufus said: 'You've got Austin Power's dance moves and the Elephant man's voice. As Austin powers himself said, groovy baby.'

Ian continued the critique with: 'You look a cross between Dennis the Menace, peter moon and my uncle. But that's what the sixties were like!'

'Doesn't he look like the great Roy Castle. That was technically the most proficient dance ever performed,' added Vic.

He removed the jacket to reveal a skull and crossbones jumper and kicked off what might generously be described as a conceptual routine, which at one point saw him brandishing knitting needles and a ball of wool.

He received a standing ovation, and told Steve and Alex: 'That really felt like coming home. That was extraordinary, what a weird feeling. I feel quite sick.'

Rufus said: I've often wondered what iot would be like if you gave Dennis the menace Orvil's haircut and too many blue smarties. I am filled with nothing but respect, that was absolutely phenomenal.
Ian added: 'You've scared all the kids away. How did your Theology degree help?'
'It was rural and urban. It was dynamic, it had every portion of the ingredients I require. I was oscillating throughout that performance in the style of a young frightened mouse,' said Vic.

Dressed in a policewoman's outfit, Alice emerged onto the stage with a group of dancing support officers and convicts, and performed a colourful routine featuring fake 'slapping', and even planted a kiss on Rufus's face.

Dancing to Get Happy, Ava sauntered onto the stage in a pair of black sequined mini shorts and a sexy black blazer, accompanied by a troupe of suited dancers.

After a rather more professional effort than her competitors she told Steve Jones: 'I'm tired, I had fun, I had really good fun.'

Rufus commented: 'Clearly you were tired, because at rhe end I could see you puffng. It was glamorous, it was sexy, it was wonderful.'

'That was a dance, excuse my language on a Saturday evening, it was blooming excellent' Ian enthused, while Vic finished with 'It was marvellous. It ignited a passion in me I thought was dormant.'

BLEEDING Dancing on Ice star Matt Evers crashed out last night after his face was slashed with a skate blade.

Horrified Hollyoaks actress Jorgie Porter, 24, was rehearsing for tonight's show when she caught the professional skater on the forehead.
The gash was so deep, Matt, 35, was rushed to hospital for stitches.
The accident happened as the pair practised the neck spin, where Jorgie has to wrap her legs around Matt's throat.
An insider said: "They'd rehearsed once without mishap, but Matt warned Jorgie her blade was getting too close.

JORGIE Porter is terrified of the increasingly difficult lifts in her Dancing On Ice routines - in case she slices off her partner's EAR.

The gorgeous blonde has shared her worries over hurting Matt Evers.
She said: "My biggest fear is injuring Matt. My skates are wrapped around his head a lot, and I'm scared I'm going to chop an ear off or something."
Jorgie, who is the bookies' favourite to win the series, said that while adrenaline is keeping her going, she fears that she may "crash and burn" at some stage.
She told Inside Soap: "I'm hoping that day won't come until after I've been voted off the ice – but right now, I'm just really hyper. Everything is happening at once."
And added: "When the show inevitably comes to an end for me, I'll be gutted to not be doing it any more."

OOH la la Ola! Strictly Come Dancing's Ola Jordan can usually be found seducing fans with her sexy sambas – but here's what she looks like behind the dressing room door.

The beauty, who partnered footballer Robbie Savage, has signed up as the face and body of Theo Paphitis' new lingerie line Boux Avenue.
Ola admits husband James – also a pro on Strictly – occasionally resents the male attention she gets.
She told TV Biz: "I love to dress up all the time and, yes, James does get jealous sometimes but our relationship is very strong and we make sure we have date nights and keep things special."
And one way Ola keeps James happy? She likes to say "bad words" to him in her native Polish. "He loves it," she said.
