Vanity publishing becomes self-publishing and gains respect?

Interesting article on Amazon and author earnings reports. I'd love to delve more into these numbers. For example, how do they ("they" being Amazon) define "small and medium" publishers? Obviously self-published or indies (as they're now called) could be as little as one title, but curious about the small and medium pubs.

It's fascinating, early on, to be published on certain online retail sites (like Fictionwise), publishers had to have a minimum of titles. You COULD NOT publish with only 1 or 2 titles. Wasn't allowed. And, you needed a certain number of authors, I believe it was the same at All Romance, but I could be mistaken. It's been awhile...

And back then, indie publishers were considered "indies" or small houses and were not considered self-published, because self-published authors were another breed and were considered "vanity" authors. Back then to be self-published was a disgrace. Now, it's becoming the norm.

Time's have changed. Now, it's prideful to be self-published, who are now called, "indies."

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Just because someone can write a book, doesn't mean they should publish a book.

Writers wanting to be published authors still need all the professional editors and quality team (not someone's cousin twice-removed and NOT a critique group), needed to make a quality book. That is, if they want it to sell.

A Great Read

“I bought this book for a Christmas present for my eight year old granddaughter. She absolutely loved the Cat With No Name and I’m told she’s now able to read it herself and does so to her little sister. This one didn’t make it on time for Christmas, but she’s exited that I’ll take it to her next month. I read it myself and like Catherine’s other children’s books I can see where my granddaughter, and other children, will become transfixed to the story in the same way she was with the other book. Very nice, and so are the illustrations.”

Farewell to Sony eBookstore

Sony announced yesterday that as of March 20, 2014 6 PM EST, their Reader Store, that carried ebooks, will be closing. Sony's books will be transferred to Kobo, although wouldn't Kobo already be carrying these titles? I'd be curious to see how many additional titles Kobo will be carrying with the influx of Sony titles.

A lot of people don't realize that the Sony Reader was actually one of the early ebook readers ("Sony invented the electronic ink reader") and was carried by Barnes and Noble, back in 2006. At the time, Amazon passed on carrying the Sony Reader (as they were working on a little device called, "Kindle")...

Do-Overs

Have you ever had such a great time that you wish you could do it all over again?

Last weekend, my husband and I, were in San Francisco and I've just been sitting here thinking about what a great time it was, and how I'd like to do it all over again.

We started off watching the 49er game in San Francisco, and the views were stunning.

At half-time, my son and I walked to the Palace of Fine Arts, and around the yacht harbor, where you could reach out and touch the Golden Gate Bridge. The weather was warm and sunny, it was one of those beautiful San Francisco sunny days where you forget it's winter!

After the game, my husband and I went to see the play, "The Book of Mormon." I haven't been to a show in a while and it was so much fun to get dressed up and go to a beautiful theatre, the buzz over the play was amazing. At intermission, we had champagne, and after the play, we walked to a restaurant where it's said that Dashiell Hammett wrote, "The Maltese Falcon."

We had a great time, there was more, but that's all for now!

Happy 2014 everyone, and thank you for visiting my site.

Here's a little secret. I blinked and had 14 books of my own published, and published 117 books through my company, New Line Press. Seriously, sometimes I'm not even sure how that happened, but it's been a wonderful whirlwind!

One of my authors is working on a sequel and I've been enjoying reading her work as she sends it. It's very good and it's sure to be a dynamo read!

I have several WIP's, and am hoping to have a few releases of my own in 2014, so stay tuned!

News: Open after Christmas

I know everyone is super busy with Christmas (as am I!), but I received an early Christmas present from Amazon. My revised and updated (with new content) book, Motherhood Moments (with a shiny new cover) has in fact gone Live on Amazon! So, bookmark this, tuck this any until you have a moment to have a cup of coffee and sit down with my book that includes some pretty funny (true!) stories about raising kids!

By the way, my kids will deny them, but I assure you the stories are real!

Why you should watch your sales, and if YOUR Pub doesn't tell YOU, that sucks

If you are a self-published author or author of an indie press, or any press for that matter, you really need to watch your sale stats. I know what you're thinking, I'm already doing my website, uploading, editing, Twitter, social media, and all that. But hey, you wanted to be your own boss! You wanted to be self-published, so you need to do the work. Just that simple.

So, here's the thing. You need to watch your sales, every day. And here's why. After awhile, you'll know how many books it takes to sell to make a best seller list. Best seller list? Yes, if you have "categorized" your book properly on, say for example, Amazon, you can land on a best seller list, and if you're not checking your sale numbers, you wouldn't even know.

Use it to your advantage. Once you make a best seller list, let the world know. Twitter, Facebook. Follow by example. One of my authors, Winona Rasheed says that, I "make her feel like a celebrity," when she makes a best seller list. Good! She is a celebrity.

I also know that Winona, for example, is going to Tweet, Facebook, and promote herself once I've passed the information on to her. As a publisher, an author who does this, is gold. If you are your own publisher, you have to be on both sides of the coin and do it all.

I log in every day and look at the sales numbers. And when I see that a certain number of books sold, I high-tail it to the ranking area on the book's page (i.e. Amazon), and I screenshot it, and I write up a blog/press release, and send out a notice to the author, Tweet it... All before I've finished my morning cup of coffee.

And, as a publisher and cheerleader for my authors, I wouldn't have it any other way.
