Barron, a Chicago priest and professor, has created a remarkable book and TV series called "Catholicism" -- which, in reintroducing a 2,000-year-old tradition, manages to be both elaborate and humble. It's self-conscious as a work of evangelization (complete with available study guides and a prayer card for those who care for such things), yet welcoming to a wide potential audience.
Barron characterizes his effort as a "guided exploration of the Catholic world ... conducting you ever deeper into the mystery of the Incarnation in the hopes that you might be transformed by its power." He makes excellent use of the vibrancy of technology to reintroduce a vocabulary and tradition that has, of late, been too much hindered by a lack of confidence.

New Publication of Saint Irenaeus' Writing : "Against Heresies"

There is a new publication in a single volume, of the complete English text of Saint Irenaeus' "Against Heresies". This is the writing Saint Irenaeus used to expose the fallacies of Gnosticism, and to eliminate it as a threat to the true faith.

According to the publishers: "the text is freshly re-typeset, but retains the complete translation from the Ante-Nicene Fathers series"...

The author of this blog has put together a little ebook of about 30 pages. This "book" contains a different saint quotation for each day of the year. On those days where it is the feast or memorial of the saint being quoted, the saints name appears in bold type.

I spent a good deal of time on this little project, and I am offering it to our blog readers for $1.99. Unlike this blog however, there are no illustrations of the various saints.

The Song of Bernadette

This movie is a classic, released in 1943 by 20th Century Fox. "The Song of Bernadette" starred Jennifer Jones as Saint Bernadette of Lourdes.

It tells the story of Bernadette Soubirous a poor peasant girl who has a vision of The Virgin Mary. The local political and religious leaders don't believe her, and view her as a "silly peasant girl". They try to get her to renounce her claims, and her vision becomes controversial in the region for several years, with authorities permitting and then denying true believers access to the grotto.

This film was released at a time when the world was involved in that terrible struggle we call World War 2. I think it's timing was appropriate in that it showed all that there was hope.

Evidently 20th Century Fox anticipated controversy between believers and non-believers with the release of "The Song of Bernadette". To take the edge off any controversy they inserted the now famous opening title "To those who believe in God, no explanation is necessary. To those who do not believe in God, no explanation is possible."

Her performance in "The Song of Bernadette" earned Jennifer Jones the 1943 Academy Award for Best Actress.

On A&E: God or the Girl

Finally, a reality show based on reality. This Easter Sunday on the A&E network carried on cable and satellite, a five-part reality series premieres entitled "God or the Girl". This program has 4 young Catholic men as they contemplate one of the most serious choices in their lives...the choice between the priesthood and marriage. This is not, according to reviews in The Boston Herald, Milwaukee Journal, and New York Daily News, the typical reality show, nor is it disrespectful as one might assume from a title like "God or the Girl". It actually affirms the Catholic Church and honors vocations to the priesthood and the witness of faithful young Catholics. The series has received a positive review from the USCCB.

The Magnificent Prayers of Saint Bridget of Sweden

This is a very moving and emotive prayer book on the Passion of Jesus. It opens with a short biographical sketch of this wonderful Saint of The Church.

The book then opens with her prayers to Jesus as He suffered for the Salvation of all. It is truly and deeply moving as she walks us through the sufferings endured by our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

The pictures selected for this prayer book are also deeply moving and wont leave any soul untouched by its vivid portrayal of what our Lord endured with His sufferings for love of us.
