Product Description

Since the early seventeenth century, whenever a pope has died, the Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church have convened in Rome behind locked doors to elect a successor--and all eyes focus on The Eternal City. The Papal Conclave is an event like no other. Highly secretive and conducted behind the doors of the Sistine Chapel, it happens only a few times every century. Cardinals meet en masse in their scarlet robes. Throngs of the faithful stand watch in St. Peter’s Square. Finally, white smoke billows from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel signaling the election of a new pontiff. In Behind Locked Doors, Frederic J. Baumgartner evokes the high drama of this event while simultaneously providing a comprehensive and rigorous history of the papal elections. Behind Locked Doors is a fascinating look at the death of popes and the centuries-old transfer of Vatican power from one man to the next.

Product Description
Catholics live in an enchanted world: a world of statues and holy water, stained glass and votive candles, saints and religious medals, rosary beads and holy pictures. But these Catholic paraphernalia are merely hints of a deeper and more pervasive religious sensibility that inclines Catholics to see the Holy lurking in creation. The world of the Catholic is haunted by a sense that the objects, events, and persons of daily life are revelations of Grace. In this fascinating discussion of what is unique about the Catholic worldview and culture and what distinguishes it from Protestantism, Andrew Greeley--one of the most popular and prolific authors writing today--examines the religious imagination that shapes Catholics' lives.
In a lively and engaging narrative, Greeley discusses the central themes of Catholic culture: Sacrament, Salvation, Community, Festival, Structure, Erotic Desire, and the Mother Love of God. Ranging widely from Bernini to Scorsese, Greeley distills these themes from the high arts of Catholic culture and asks: Do these values really influence people's lives? Using international survey data, he shows the counterintuitive ways in which Catholics are defined. He goes on to root these behaviors in the Catholic imagination.
As he identifies and explores the fertile terrain of Catholic culture, Greeley illustrates the enduring power of particular stories, images, and orientations in shaping Catholics' lived experience. He challenges a host of assumptions about who Catholics are and makes a strong case for the vitality of the culture today. The Catholic imagination is sustained and passed on in relationships, the home, and the community, Greeley shows. Absorbing, compassionate, and deeply informed, this book provides an entirely new perspective on the nature and role of religion in daily life for Catholics and non-Catholics alike.Amazon.com Review
The Catholic Imagination is Andrew Greeley's attempt to summarize what is unique about Catholic culture. "Catholics live in an enchanted world, a world of statues and holy water, stained glass and votive candles, saints and religious medals, rosary beads and holy pictures," Greeley writes. "But these Catholic paraphernalia are mere hints of a deeper and more pervasive religious sensibility which inclines Catholics to see the Holy lurking in creation." In seven chapters, The Catholic Imagination considers some of the central themes of Catholic culture--sacrament, salvation, community, festival, hierarchy, erotic desire, and the mother love of God--particularly as they have been treated by Catholic artists. The book's theological and aesthetic observations gain force from its sociological insights. (Greeley teaches Sociology at the University of Chicago and the University of Arizona.). Read the chapter on "Sacred Desire" first. There's good stuff here on Bernini (later in the book he moves on to Scorsese, Mozart, and others); but even more fascinating is Greeley's empirical evidence that "Catholics have sex more often, they are more playful in their sexual encounters, and they enjoy sex more [than other Americans]."

Product Description
Too many young Catholics experience their faith as Mark Hart did: They rarely miss Mass even if they don t understand it they have a Bible even if they never read it they go to confession even if they aren t particularly repentant. Is that your experience of Catholicism? Is yours a faith of Thou Shalt Nots? If so, forget about a dreary life of mindless obedience to rules you don t understand. It s time to enter into the transforming light of your Creator who invites you to live from the still center of his undying love. The author s humorous and hard-hitting reflections drive home the point that God isn t calling the reader to be a good person, someone who merely obeys the rules, but a new person in Jesus Christ. Author: Mark HartFormat: 129 pages, PaperbackPublisher: Servant Publications (July 31, 2006) ISBN: 978-0867166774

Wearing cross pendants have been almost customary for Catholics all over the world, irrespective of their geographical location.

Cross is a symbol that is widely recognized by people, irrespective of their own religious belief. Moreover, most of the big names in the pop world, whether it was George Michael, Madonna or Britney Spears, they all have worn cross for their stage performances and music album. This has further contributed to the popularity of this religious jewelry.

Due to its wide spread popularity, there are several designs available in Catholic cross pendants. Let us have a look at the 5 best selling Catholic cross pendants:

•14k Gold Italian Style White Gold Cross Pendant

The beauty of this pendant is its curvy cross pattern. The pendant has superior shine, which makes it perfect for all occasions. This pendant speaks volume of the personality of the wearer. It can match with your evening gown and even with your sports outfit.

Make this pendant look all the more beautiful by wearing it with a white gold chain in Italian style. Buy a thicker chain if you are bulkier. For people with a slender built, a chain in thinner density will look good.

To make this pendant look perfectly well on you, buy a chain either in yellow gold in Italian design, or in white gold. If you are buying the pendant in silver, then you can select a silver chain to go with the pendant.

•Sterling Silver Multi- Color Murano Cross Pendant

There has been a growing trend of jewelry made in Venetian glass. This pendant has beautiful combination of multi colored cross, embedded in silver setting. Thus, when you are wearing this cross, it will also become your style statement.

Along with this pendant, you can also buy matching earrings and ring either in square shape or in oval shape, to complete the set.

•14k Gold Latin Cross Pendant

For many, cross is a symbol of Almighty, and they do not want to experiment with it and are happy, keeping it in the traditional style. This 14k gold is a live example of beauty in simplicity.

Wear it with a flat gold chain or a thin gold chain.

•14k Gold Shinny Large Cross Pendant

Product Description

Product Description
For almost a year, veteran National Geographic photographer Jim Stanfield captured nearly every corner of the Vatican, both the world’s smallest country and the center of the Roman Catholic Church. Along with author Bart McDowell, he provides an insider’s view into the history of this 108.7-acre enclave, from the first St. Peter’s, built in the fourth century, through the amazing reign of Pope John Paul II, and beyond. Rarely seen areas of the complex, such as the Pope’s personal quarters and the world-renowned libraries, and up-close views of the stunning and priceless art and architecture provide an unrivaled insider’s look into this amazing nation.

In this revised trade paperback edition, Washington Post writer Howard Schneider brings the story of the Vatican up-to-date, including the death and funeral of Pope John Paul II and the selection and ordination of Pope Benedict XVI. Pope Benedict XVI’s recent trip to the United States is also documented in poignant words and images.

Product Description
The customs and traditions associated with a pope’s death have changed quite a bit from the time when popes were buried in the underground catacombs of Rome. Various ceremonies, rites, and rituals developed over time, but a formal procedure for the death of the pope wasn’t initiated until the early fourteenth century, and even then, the protocol wasn’t always followed to the letter.
This comprehensive reference book provides information on the deaths, funerals, and burial places of each pope and antipope from St. Peter (Apostle) to John Paul I. Among some of the most interesting are the deaths of Innocent X, who was almost gnawed by rats because no one would bury him; Alexander VI, who was stuffed into an old carpet and pummeled into his coffin; and Formosus, whose corpse was physically put on trial. The Introduction presents a brief history of papal funerals and tombs, and also covers modern burials. A unique feature of the book is its presentation of all papal epitaphs, in their original language and in English—many translated for the first time.

Product Description
Ephrem was born in the Mesopotamian city of Nisibis toward the end of the third century. An outpost of the Roman Empire, Nisibis and its Christian citizens were to be formed by the reign of Constantine and by the doctrines of the Council of Nicea. There, in the context of a large and sophisticated Jewish population and numerous Gnostic sects, Ephrem sought to defend orthodox Nicene Christianity. His teaching and writing made him an influential voice in the life of Syriac Christianity through the peaceful years of Constantine's patronage, the years of persecution after 361 under Emperor Julian, and the conflict between Persians and Romans which ultimately forced Ephrem to move to Edessa where he stayed until his death in 373.
It was as a poet that Ephrem made his greatest impact. Writing in isosyllabic verses called madrashe, he attained a literary brilliance that won him a place of prominence not only in his own tradition, but also in the Coptic, Ethiopian, Armenian, and Arabic traditions as well. His hymns, praised in the West by Jerome, had a formative influence on the development of medieval religious drama in Europe. Blending Greek forms with his native style, he wove a highly crafted poetry of rich symbolism, attempting to fit the events of his day into a cosmic framework of God's redemptive act in Christ. Ephrem's combination of elements of Stoicism and Middle Platonism with Christian belief in a form reminiscent of the great second century apologists produced a corpus that speaks of his own literary genius and even more eloquently of the majesty and beauty of the divine source of all true poetry.
Here, in a fresh and lively translation, are the Hymns on the Nativity, Hymns Against Julian, and the Hymns on Virginity and the Symbols of the Lord in which that voice may be heard closely and appreciated, wondered at, and enjoyed.

Product Description

The Vatican’s dealings with the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich have long been swathed in myth and speculation. After almost seventy years, the crucial records for the years leading up to 1939 were finally opened to the public, revealing the bitter conflicts that raged behind the walls of the Holy See. Anti-Semites and philo-Semites, adroit diplomats and dogmatic fundamentalists, influential bishops and powerful cardinals argued passionately over the best way to contend with the intellectual and political currents of the modern age: liberalism, communism, fascism, and National Socialism. Hubert Wolf explains why a philo-Semitic association was dissolved even as anti-Semitism was condemned, how the Vatican concluded a concordat with the Third Reich in 1933, why Hitler’s Mein Kampf was never proscribed by the Church, and what factors surrounded the Pope’s silence on the persecution of the Jews.

In rich detail, Wolf presents astonishing findings from the recently opened Vatican archives—discoveries that clarify the relations between National Socialism and the Vatican. He illuminates the thinking of the popes, cardinals, and bishops who saw themselves in a historic struggle against evil. Never have the inner workings of the Vatican—its most important decisions and actions—been portrayed so fully and vividly.

Whether you have been out of the dating scene due to a long term relationship or rejoining it after being widowed, it may seem like an intimidating situation. Should you take a break and stay single for a while? Have you forgotten everything you once knew about dating? Where do you meet people? What is with online dating? Is it worth trying? Can you even find good Catholic singles these days?

Being Ready

The first thing to assess is whether you are ready to begin dating again. If you have just gotten out of a long term relationship or been widowed, you’ll want to take some time to be single and take an assessment of your last relationship. Remember who you are and what makes you a great catch!

The New Dating Scene Isn't So New

Human attraction and dating is still the same, don't worry. In fact, with the advent of online dating, it's even easier to find that special someone. You can still do things the old-fashioned way, meeting friends of friends or the son of that lady in the church choir. But now there are cool new ways to meet people that you might never meet in your normal social circle.

Meeting People

One of the easiest ways to ease into the dating scene is to find a meetup group. If you go to meetup.com you can find groups in your area of people who are interested in similar hobbies and interests as you. Want to meet people who speak German? Find folks who visit all the local wine tasting events? Meet people who are also widows and widowers? There are groups for every type of interest and since they're mainly for meeting friends, they're very low key. If you end up meeting that someone special, awesome! If you don't, at least you’ll make some new friends.

Online Dating

Online dating is a great way to meet people. It may seem scary if you’ve never tried it before, but trust me when I say that the horror stories are the minority. Most people who do online dating end up meeting someone to date or at the very least making some friends. All you need to do is make a profile (link to profile article here) and start your search for a great partner! What makes online dating great is it opens your social circle to people you might not ordinarily meet out and about town.

Catholic Singles

There are some great online dating sites where you can meet Catholic singles. The best one is ChristianCafe (link to affiliate program). They have been in the business for a decade and are the best place to meet Christian singles. There is also the site Catholics Mingle, which is run by the Spark Network of dating sites. While these sites cost money for subscription fees, you can be guaranteed that all the members are Catholic or Christian. If you are serious about meeting someone who share your faith, these are the best places to be online.

The key to starting dating again is just that start! Dip a toe in the pool and explore a bit. You will get used to it in no time.
