Add a Devil horn headband to a red dress. These are all vintage dresses in Large or XL sizes!

This is the classic look. Place it near your shoulder, but above your boob, please. (We blogged about this before.) 

#2 On your collar.

If you're wearing a collared shirt and Peter Pan collar dress, why not put a contrasting brooch on it!? Instant different look!

#3 On a necklace.

Change up your necklace and pin the brooch to the necklace. You can even pin it to your top/dress if it's heavy. It's an anchor for your necklace!

National Comedy Center

We took a Sunday to explore and headed to the National Comedy Center right when they opened in the morning. 

It combines two historic buildings one of them being the Jamestown Gateway Train Station, so the facade and marble are really unique to the museum.

And behind the museum...

If you know me you might be thinking, "but Julie Ann hates comedies". I'm here to tell you this is not true! I have a very very dry sense of humor, and the National Comedy Center reminded me how fun sketch comedy is. I also love the Muppets.

We were greeted by a very friendly woman that gave us wristbands or "Laugh Bands". Before you are even allowed into the center you have to check in at a kiosk where you pick the comedy movies, TV shows, and comedians that you like and the wristband saves your humor profile. When you enter there are different displays, some are permanent with memorabilia and notes, and some are interactive where you scan the wrist band and it pulls up comedians you have in common with other people at the display and plays some of their skits. Very high tech since it just opened in 2018! There's even a separate floor for "controversial" comedians and content.

Honestly you can spend all day here, so it's a good thing they have a little cafeteria. We were there three and a half hours and didn't see everything. I feel like each time you go, you can have a different experience. We'll def be back!

Lucy / Desi Museum

Next we strolled a couple of blocks away to the Lucy and Desi Museum. After all, Jamestown is known as Lucille Ball's hometown! In comparison to the National Comedy Center, the Lucy and Desi Museum seems a little dated.

(Maybe I should preface this with I have a Art History Master's Degree with a concentration in Museum Studies and I worked in several art museums.) Some of the exhibits were "coming soon" spaces or a "work in progress" and the configuration of some of the videos they had showing caused bottle necks to visitors, and it wasn't even busy! Me being me, my biggest concern was the vintage costumes they had on display and how they stored them. Some of the cases looked ok, but others were open to dust and not temperature controlled. That being said, it was still very informative, and even though it was in two buildings it wasn't overwhelming.

STBC

We grabbed some food and drinks at Southern Tier Brewing, home of Pumpking, Andrew's absolute favorite beer.

It was nice to relax and sit outside listening to an acoustic singer playing 1970s favorites. While there, we were stopped by some of our online customers that recognized us! Y'all are everywhere and we love you! Please stop me if you see me, I'll try not to be awk-weird. I sincerely mean it, stop me and say "hi!"

More Lucy

Sticking with the Lucy theme while it was still light out, we headed to see the Lucy statues in the nearby park that's right on the water. Yes there are two. The first one that was made is dubbed "scary" Lucy by the locals, the second one looks much more like her.

Then we went to see her grave. There were other people there waiting to see it, and I was impressed at how clearly marked it is. They have a painted pathway on the ground, and even a Lucy painted garbage can nearby!

Peterson's Candies

Then we checked out Peterson's Candies because of the kitsch-tastic 1950s vibe with the giant candy canes on the outside. It might be small inside but they have a huge variety of candies. Their chocolate is delicious. I picked up some bridge mix because it always reminds me of my gram, an assorted chocolates box, and a couple chocolate covered jellies. Some people hate them, I love chocolate covered jellies. I admit they are weird, but tasty.

At the end of the day, I think these were the highlights. Did we miss anything? Let us know!

A staple wardrobe piece in any vintage lover's closet is the tropical button down shirt. What ever you call it ~ a Hawaiian shirt, aloha shirt, tiki shirt, hang ten, or island shirt ~ it's a classic and can be found in any size in so many fabrics and prints there's one for everybody's style! So take that loud floral shirt out of the closet and make a unique Halloween costume!

Surf these ideas!

Magnum P.I. An 1980s classic! Add some tight faded jeans, white sneakers or shoes, a 'stache, and chest hair is optional. Great for solving cases!

Weird Al Yankovic. I admit I liked 1980s Weird Al with short bushy hair better. Add the bushy hair, 'stache, wire glasses, and accordion is optional. You'll get SO much Halloween candy with this you'll want to "just eat it, eat it, eat it..."

Elvis in Blue Hawaii. Everyone always looks for Elvis's red shirt from Blue Hawaii, but there were other great ones in the movie too. Here's one from our Vintage Collection that looks similar to Elvis'. Add some white pants, a pomp, and a uke. You're good to go on an island adventure!

Speaking of Elvis and Hawaii...

I have to mention. It's the Flying Elvises Shirt we have a Cats Like Us. The print is green souvenir style with islands, and logos of the Moana Hotel, Honolulu, Halekulani Hotel Waikiki, Maui and stamps, but the best part is the embroidered back! It reads "The Flying Elvises, with a picture of Elvis, Songtan Chapter". The 25th Fighter Squadron (25 FS) is part of the 51st Fighter Wing at Osan Air Base, South Korea. It operates the A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft conducting close air support missions. The Squadron is unofficially known as the "Flying Elvis's" and have unlimited knowledge on everything regarding the King. Grab this shirt add a pomp, goggles, and flying ace neck scarf and soar!

Maybe you're more of a Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas fan? Hunter S. Thompson knew how to style a Hawaiian shirt! Add a bucket hat, yellow lens wire shades, and a cigarette filter holder. For inspo he's pictured below in a Hawaiian shirt and as portrayed by Johnny Depp in the movie.

Looking for a less specific costume to use with your Hawaiian shirt? How about... Tourist. Grab a lei, straw hat, camera around your neck, a little sunscreen on your nose, and shorts and it's an easy fun look!

Hula Girl. Not feeling like wearing an uncomfortable coconut bra? Take a Hawaiian shirt and tie it at the waist and roll the sleeves, add a grass skirt, bottoms, and a lei and you're ready to hula the night away!

Let me tell you about the kinds of slips there are and why you might think about wearing one! I'm not going to cover all the foundation garments ~ shapewear, and crinolines have been covered in past blogs ~ slips offer a different kind of layering.

The full slip has a attached bust and skirt, and looks like a thin fabric dress. It often has adjustable spaghetti straps and lace trim. Older styles are made of a thicker fabric with very little give and sometimes even have a zipper! Newer styles are stretchy and more forgiving.

Ad for colorful full slips (and a cat!)

A half slip is just that! It's the skirt of a full slip meant to cover your thighs and goes from your waist to mid thigh or longer. It usually has an elasticized waistband, lace trim at the bottom, and sometimes a slit at the hem for easy movement.

Why did these classic undergarments decline in popularity? Because dresses and skirts now tend to be lined, whereas in the past they were not.

Why would you ever want to wear a slip?

1. If your dress is a light color, a thin fabric, or sheer, you might want to wear a slip so it's not see through. It's for modesty.
2. If it's a windy day and you want to avoid wardrobe malfunctions with a dress or skirt blowing up in the breeze.
3. If it's cold out it can be used as an extra layer for warmth.
4. It can be the layer between you and itchy fabric.
5. It can prevent static cling.
6. It can be an extra layer between you and your dress, to keep your dress cleaner for another wear.
7. Lace peeking out can be sexy, and make you feel sexy.
8. Way back when, it was just considered  "the proper thing to do". But you can make up your own mind on that one!
9. Last (but not least) they can be used as loungewear or nightgowns. Just as Liz Taylor in Butterfield 8.

p.s. If you hear someone say "It's snowing in the south." It means your slip is showing!

Can you explain why Elvis busts? 

Elvis, being the pop culture god that he was/is seemed like a rather easy target for my satirical onslaught....annnnd it didn’t have annnnything to do with one buddy finding an Elvis bust at a garage sale whilst, simultaneously, another buddy was offering to teach me to make polyurethane molds. The rest as we say, was just overactive imagination.

Suffering From Elvis Disease, where does the name come from?

As for the name “Suffering From Elvis Disease”... well, that’s a thing. Since I started making the Elvi (plural for Elvis, obvs) in ‘98 or ‘99, I’ve been telling people that the name comes from a lyric in the psychobilly band Batmobile’s “Girls, Girls, Girls”. The lyric is “Boy, you’re suffering from Elvis Disease”... or so I thought. Today. February 28th, 20 freaking 21, I finally decided to look up the lyrics to that song, and apparently it actually says “lover’s disease", not “Elvis disease". Thank you sooooo much Google. I guess we’re going to have to chalk the name up to overactive imagination too! 

It's obvious you have talent in several mediums with your life as a tattoo artist. What is your artistic background/ experience? What did you go to school for? Do you think that tattooing and your Elvis busts have a similar creative outlet or are they different enough so you don't get bored?

I have been making art since I could hold a crayon. I took various classes at studios and whatnot throughout my childhood and adolescence and then majored in Illustration, with a Painting minor, at university. Oils, acrylics, and especially scratch board are all favorite mediums of mine. And now I spend most of my time tattooing... Elvis busts coming in at a close second. Though all types of art ~ so similar in ways ~ are all vastly different. I don’t think that helps or hinders me in the "getting bored" department. I honestly don’t understand the concept of getting bored. (Me either Derek. Lol.)

What made you start working in plaster? Is it messy? What are some of the challenges of this medium?

I think I started using plaster because it works well in the molds I was making and I didn’t know what else to use really. And yes, it is suuuuuper messy!!! That is the number one challenge of using it! Hands down! 

Do you make your own casts for each one? Or do you use a base cast and add to it?

Each Elvis bust is handmade, though each Hellvis is similar the rest of them, no two are exactly the same. A bunch of the finished Elvi are made from the original mold and then altered and painted to make them into whichever specific style I happen to be making at the time. If making one of them requires a ton of sculpting work each time then I will actually make a mold of that individual style.... like Skullvis, Smellvis, or Chicken Ala King, to just name a few.

I know you've been making Elvis busts for a long time, how long has it been? Do you miss traveling and vending at shows? I know you took a break for a little while, what made you come back to making them?

I’ve been making the Elvi since 1998, I think. It was either that or ‘99. I did my first “show” when I set up in a corner in Java Temple during an Allentown Art festival in Buffalo, NY and I think I “sold” one bust to a friend. After that my first “proper” vending  experience (I’m using “proper” extremely loosely) was in 2001 in Long Island, NY. What followed after that was 4 whirlwind years of traveling around the country vending at tattoo conventions, car shows, rock’n’roll weekenders, and a few horror conventions. I had a blast and though I miss the fun I had and the friends I made, I wouldn’t say that I miss it. I love my life now and honestly I couldn’t even fathom trying to live the way I did back them. It was pretty chaotic. 

I have taken some time off from making the busts over the years. Usually it was because I was tattooing and didn’t have the time to do both. My decision to restart making them in 2020 was definitely “lockdown” inspired. Can’t tattoo? Cool. Looks like I’m making Elvis busts full time again! I am back to tattooing though, so the Elvis bust production has slowed down greatly whilst I try to find the time to do both. 

I know you've made large Mary's too. Would you ever make other busts? Say of people? 

Ahhh yes. The Dead Marys. Those were a lot of fun to make. Perhaps I will make a few of those again but at the moment I don’t have any plans to make them any time soon. And though, at the moment, I can definitively say that I don’t plan on making any busts of somebody else or something else... talk to me during the next lock-down and that may very well change! 

What was your favorite bust to make? Which one is your most requested? Do have any new designs in the works?

You know, I don’t know if I could single out any one design as being my favorite Elvis bust. There are so many versions of them and each one makes me smile for one reason or another. I think one of my favorite aspects of all them is when they make other people laugh. That’s always a great feeling. And then if they buy them, it’s even better... Wink. Wink. 

My number one seller is, without a shadow of a doubt, Hellvis. Currently,  I am still working on a bunch of “one off” custom orders from the second lock-down so I’m not taking on any new orders or working on any new molds... HOWEVER, eventually,  I do have at least one more  bust that I plan on molding sometime this spring or summer but I’m not going to tell you when. Because I can’t. And I’m not going to tell you what... Wink. Wink.

You've been doing this a while, have you ever been contacted by famous people that wanted one of your Elvis busts?

Bill Moseley, of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Repo! the Genetic Opera, and Rob Zombie movie fame bought a few busts apparently for Rob and Sheri Zombie. Johnny Ramone, RIP, also had a couple of busts. And finally, the director Stuart Cornfeld had like 10 of them!!! I might be exaggerating the number. It was a long time ago, but it was a lot of them! 

What is currently for sale? How can people purchase and get in touch with you?

Unfortunately with tattooing, catching up on previous orders, and whatnot, I am not currently taking any new orders. But fret not! We are often asked how we came up with the name for the store "Cats Like Us". The short answer is that it's the name of a great song! But the long answer is hopefully a little more interesting.

You can read more about how the store started on our about us page... On that flight back from Las Vegas in 2009 we were pretty fired up about starting the store, lots of ideas buzzing around our heads about what we should do, how to do it, and... what we should call it...

The store name ideas came fast at first, and some of the contenders were:

Glamourpuss, Black Cat, Hell on Wheels Retro, and Shindig.

None of them sounded quite right to us, so we put this on hold for a little while, while we worked up a business plan to see if we could swing it.

A few weeks later we were deep in planning and we remembered that we needed a name. It must have been fate because at that moment we were listening to one of our favorite modern rockabilly bands, the Hillbilly Hellcats. The song that was playing was "Cats Like Us", and we thought – hey, that could work.

If you listen to the song, the lyrics sing about being original, really belonging to a subculture that is not often understood, and having fun instead of working too hard. We really related to this so we thought it would work well. And that's how we choose Cats Like Us.

Cats was slang in the 1950s to mean Jazz musician, but in today's retro sensibility means anyone Cool or Hip. If you need me to define those terms, you might be in the wrong place daddy-o!

Hi Friends. If you did not know, we had a beautiful little girl named Ginger. She was a huge part of our lives for almost 16 years, and part of everything we did at the store too. She also happened to be a cat. 

We had to say goodbye to Ginger on February 5th. This is a short blog about how wonderful she was and how hard this has been. We are so thankful to have had her. I wish you all could have met her. We are so thankful to everyone who have been so supportive over the past few weeks.

In Julie Ann's Words...

Ginger's health has been in decline since about 2017. We really thought she was going to go then, so in a way I was kind of prepared, but little did I know how truly heartbreaking it is. Then she had a bout with acute pancreatitis in 2018, so again we thought her time was up when we went against the vet's orders to bring her home, but her last day was Friday, February 5, 2021. 

Early last week she started throwing up all her food. She couldn't keep anything down, so we took her to the vet. We knew she had kidney disease and some other problems. She was still active and bright eyed. They gave her fluids and tried to get her to keep food down. She had loose poops all over. Xrays showed nothing was wrong, no obstructions, just immediately throwing up after everything she put in her mouth. 

Thursday, February 4 we brought her home hoping to have a few days left with her, and we scheduled her final vet appointment for Monday (or today), but in true Ginger fashion she showed us she needed to go sooner, so we had to move her visit to Friday! She was throwing up blood. Thursday night we watched her favorite show Supernatural. (I've been blogging about Supernatural for a long time on my personal blog Fluffy the Vampire Slayer  and Ginger was always my lap buddy. We needed to watch the last part of the last season.) She always loved Sam's gentle voice and even though she couldn't hear him I think she found comfort in it because it was the only time Thursday night she wasn't restless.

After watching TV, I wrapped her in a towel and brought her upstairs to bed. I sat up with her all night long and while she was still sitting on me at 3:30am I wrote this...

When Andrew and I bought our house we were so excited because that meant we could get a cat...or cats. Shortly after moving we casually went to PetSmart looking at cats up for adoption. They have cats from the SPCA Serving Erie County and that's what we were looking for. We knew we didn't want a kitten because everyone wants a kitten and they are easily adopted out. We wanted an older cat with an established personality.

You guys have been with me forever. I feel like you are family. There are people on Facebook whose faces (and sometimes asses, not yours) I see more than my own kids some days.

You have always felt like family to me too! So often times I’ll be chatting with friends and I see your artwork the next day and it’s what we were just talking about! I’ve always felt that you’re in-tune with the world and kitsch.
 
You are a very prolific painter with extensive knowledge of the Mid Century Modern aesthetic. What is your painting background? Do you have a fine arts degree? What attracts you to the modern art style? Are there modern or contemporary artists you admire?
 
I have always been enamored with Mid Century imagery. It was a time of such optimism and opportunity and that was reflected in the emerging modernist style. Everything was shiny and new and the future was full of great possibilities. Society, at that point, was making choices about who we wanted to be and doors were opening, people were changing their ideas. People were fighting for  freedom from racism and gender discrimination, changing their minds about many things. Artists and designers were challenging norms and pushing boundaries. It was not exactly a time of true freedom and insight, but it was a time where it seemed like we could make the decision to be open to new ideas and make a brighter future for all of us. With jet packs!
Of course, somehow we just fucked that all up. I’m going to say the general reason would be, well...assholes. But that is where we are again, a time of great opportunity. It is reflected in our significant advances in technology that cross borders and bring us together in once unimaginable ways. This should give us the inspiration to try again for that truly amazing future for ALL of us. Definitely with jet packs and also robot dogs and all the cool Star Trek shit. We just need to figure out how to get past the assholes.
 
Oh! I did attend art school in Savannah in the early ‘90s but didn’t graduate and I don’t have much to say about it one way or the other. Art school is fun, and if you go you should learn how to use sponges. I missed that bit and regret it every day.
 
There’s a ton of amazing contemporary artists working in the retro pop style. I mean, too many to really name and they are all inspiration. Pascal Blanchet always makes me tear up a little, and the big boys, Tim Biskup, Shag, Derek Yaniger. The Disneys, Kevin Kidney and Jody Daily, Joey Chou... Oh! And Genndy Tartakovsky (not a Disney guy, but a legendary animation guy). I mostly obsess over animators and illustrators that blew my mind as a little kid. Maurice Noble, Mary Blair, Eyvind Earle. I just peed a little squealing over them. There are the grown up, serious artists too. Barbara Hepworth, Stuart Davis, Joseph Mugnaini, and the guy who did all the paintings for Night Gallery. 😉
 
It seems like you are producing original artwork everyday. I like how it varies in theme. One day it's Universal Monsters, the next it's cat mermaids, or abstract designs or beatniks or who knows? But I always look forward to seeing them! What inspires you/ influences you? Do you have a range of how long it takes to complete a piece of art? Is your medium always paint and pencils? Your motivation is impressive.
 
I don’t know. It’s all a “study”. It’s all my way of taking something I love and trying to capture it somehow. It’s like to taking these little things, these subtle symbols that we all subconsciously recognize, the potato chip chair you sat in in kindergarten, the cat eye glasses your grandma wore, the “It’s Alive” moment in Frankenstein. These are things that we all share and understand and that bring comfort and a sense of camaraderie, because pop culture really is our culture. It is our language.

I think I produce paintings like a spirit medium scribbles on paper until she gets something that makes sense. I’m not really channeling anything, just pulling stuff out of my ass until something strikes a chord with my audience. Until I reach that moment it’s just pointless scribbles. I tend to just call those pieces “abstract”.
 
You live near the east coast, with your style being Mid Century Modern- often found in places like Palm Springs- do you ever think you'd ever move to the west coast?
 
I was in California one time, for a signing at WonderGround Gallery in Disneyland. I got to see just Disneyland and one like street in Burbank (one street with 2 year round Halloween stores!) and I adored every bit of it. It was wintertime and it was 70 degrees and lovely. I’d love to go back and see more and get a real feel for it.

Pittsburgh is somehow not terrible. Modernism and new and shiny are lovey, but I also like gritty and grungy and old and rusty and we have that shit for days. I’ve lived lots of places up and down the east coast, (Fuck The South, by the way) and I like it here just fine for now.
 
The feeling I get from your work is punk and horror but with a 1950s twist. How would YOU describe your own work? Has it changed over time? How long have you been painting?

Yeah, I think you got it. That’s a vibe I am comfortable with. Punk, horror and too much TV, maybe? The 50’s/60’s twist was probably a direct result of too much TV. I was raised by The Munsters and Maynard Krebs. My work has changed a bit over time. My technique has tightened up a bit. My personal rage has popped its head in here and there. More lately, of course. I definitely still have the punk rock rage and I hate my parents more than ever. I’ve been doing creative stuff forever, but I’ve been making a living at it since about 2008.

You sign your paintings El Gato Gomez and there's often a cat lurking in the background. Why cats? I read somewhere that you are allergic. Any chance you would get a hairless cat?
 
The cat thing is complicated. I think they are fascinating and lovely creatures. To me they are more symbolic of what I would like to be, than something with which I would like to share a room. They are sleek and hip and wonderful to paint. That’s why I always paint the same cat. It is more the spirit of cool than a literal animal. Gomez is the same thing. Longer story on that one...but it’s all about that vintage hipster vibe.
 
I am very allergic. Hairless cats are fantastic and I would love to own one, but I would never subject the poor thing to a Pittsburgh winter. I am cold all the time from September to June. If I ever do move to California, I would go out and get every one I could find. I also love hairless dogs  and hairless rats, not hairless mole rats though. Those things are freakin’ terrifying! They live in colonies and have a queen and you can see the babies under her skin! I kinda wonder now if that is true of all hairless animals. Yikes!

You incorporate a lot of different music genres in your paintings in the form of album covers and band T shirts, is there a top five you find iconic? Or find more fun to paint?

Music is another complicated question for me. I tend to gravitate toward the accordion/kazoo end of the spectrum. I adore Gogol Bordello and The Dad Horse Experience. I like kooky/fun/kid/horror punk and goofy shit. A lot of songs make me cry lately Creep, Hallelujah, anything from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Tom Waits. I use a lot of more mainstream bands in my work just because people get it and like it and it’s funny. Putting a DEVO shirt on Spock or a Black Sabbath shirt on Iron Giant is something everyone can get behind. I’d like to do a Guillermo from What We Do In The Shadows with a Slayer shirt soon.

My husband is a metal head and he will listen to anything loud. I like loud too sometimes and grew up with it, so it’s familiar. I can appreciate the sentiment, especially the really dark Satanic stuff, which just tickles me to pieces. I find it hilarious. The more growls and references to dark lords and demons, the better. It’s just cartoonish. I always tend to picture the vocalist as either Jack Black or an actual monster, so it’s fun. The band names and sub genres are the best. I’ve done some pretty witchy artwork recently. So it helps to have the appropriate background noise.

Are there some notable collaborations that we should know about? I know that Disney contacted you to exhibit some work? Do you have any exciting things coming up?

I don’t work well with others. Disney was the greatest honor EVER! I cannot describe in human language how much the art and imagination of Disney has influenced me. I can’t get close enough to the screen during Sleeping Beauty. I think it nearly literally broke my eyes. The genius is overwhelming.
I have done some original art cards for Topps’ Mars Attacks revival which earned me some major cool points with my kids. I recently did some artwork for the International Cryptozoology Museum which is just the most fun thing in the world. I can boast that my work is in a museum.... THE INTERNATIONAL CRYPTOZOOLOGY MUSEUM! How cool is that? I have also done some art cards for Robert Jimenez who is a fantastic artist and designer, for a trading card series called Fearsome Weirdos. He does a lot of trading card stuff and books. He is very creative and prolific and just a really great person to work with.   I have a project that has been in the works for...years. I want to do a 3D ViewMaster series with a custom viewer and possibly, a read along booklet, but I’d have to do a Kickstarter and I think it’s a bad time for that. People have more important things to do with their money right now.

You've written and illustrated a book can you tell me about it? Was it in response to something in particular? Where can it be purchased?

Well...I did write a small children’s book. It is called Birds Of All Feathers and it’s available on Amazon. It was written in response to the horror of the 2016 political situation and, unfortunately, it still stands up today. Little birds are still being shit on by the bigger birds on the higher branches.

When were you first interested in rockabilly music?

I was born in the mid 60’s. Growing up in that era and I had access to all of the variety shows at the time that included artists like Glen Campbell, Mac Davis, Dean Martin, Johnny Cash, Sonny and Cher, Donnie and Marie, Hee Haw and many more. Many evenings were filled watching these programs and all of the great music segments. On Saturday mornings, after cartoons were over, American Bandstand and Soul Train came on. And, AM radio was popular, for the most part, and you could hear many different genres on the same station.

All of this gave me a wide appreciation of music, but, it wasn’t until I watched The Buddy Holly Story (1978) with Gary Busey, that I got hooked on rockabilly. Gary really channeled Buddy and I was mesmerized. Especially his version of True Love Ways.

Shortly after that, HBO aired a segment that was originally taped for Elvis’ 1968 Holiday Special, which would later be known as the ’68 Comeback Special. The segment, which would later be sold on VHS and DVD as One Night With You, many consider to be the first unplugged concert. Filmed in the round with four of Elvis’ original musicians including the great Scotty Moore on guitar and drummer DJ Fontana playing drums on the back of a guitar case, and Elvis in full black leather. This was Elvis at his finest. He was singing the songs that made him famous – not the drivel that he was forced to sing in many of his movies. (Some of his movies songs are good, but that’s for another day). I was hooked on Elvis from that day forward.

“I Want MY MTV!” I also had the good fortune to be exposed to MTV when it was first launched (and they actually played music). While watching MTV in the basement of my parents’ house in Fredonia, NY, a video from a cool looking and sounding trio from Massapequa, NY came on the TV. It was the Stray Cats playing Stray Cat Strut. This blew me away. These guys were cool, raw, energetic, and the music, to me, sounded like Buddy Holly and the Crickets on steroids. They weren’t just a revival band. They had something unique, and the videos on MTV really helped.

What is your music background?

Fast forward to the early 2000’s. After raising two children, I started singing with my best friend from High School, Steve Metivier.

The story starts after my first marriage ended in the late 90’s. I was looking to move to Buffalo from Batavia, NY. Steve had moved away after college and we hadn’t seen each other in ten years. At the time, he was directing a band at the Kenmore Methodist Church. I asked him if I could join the band. The look on his face was priceless, because he didn’t know I could sing. And, I didn’t help myself when I declared “but I have been singing at Karaoke”. He gave me a shot to sing on Christmas Eve, as many regulars were traveling for the holidays, and I passed the audition. After a few years of going out once a month for wings and beer and singing karaoke (go figure), we decided to form a folk duo and sing live. We call ourselves Old Friends, and have been singing together ever since.

In 2007, I was working for a local company in Buffalo that provided pre-press services in the printing industry. The company had the distinct honor of providing all of the pre-press for the Harry Potter books. The company had hired local Susan Banks, who was a former anchor on the Channel 7 News, and was now running her own PR firm. To make a long story short, she discovered that I was a big Elvis fan and said I should get on the board of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame (BMHOF). She gave me two comp tickets to attend the 2007 Induction Gala at the Tralf. I took my new girlfriend, Joy, who is now my wife, to the event. I met a lot of people including a local rockabilly group named The Headers, fronted by Bobby Lebel on Gretsch Guitar, who is now a good friend.

In 2008 I joined the board where I had the good fortune to meet a lot of local music legends, as well as learn their stories. Many people don’t know how rich the musical history of Buffalo and Western New York is. Two of those legends, are Ramblin’ Lou Schriver and George “Hound Dog” Lorenz. Both Lou and George were spinning records on WJJL in Niagara Falls in 1951. George, who at the time was known as “Ole Man Lorenz”, was spinning “Race Music” and Lou was spinning “Hillbilly” music. They were way before their time, and are music and broadcast legends way beyond the local area. I encourage you to research their stories.

While I was on the board of the BMHOF, I was very active planning special events, and the annual Induction Gala, as well as managing the marketing and PR of the organization. My proudest achievement happened on Thursday, June 27, 2013, when the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame Room at the Hard Rock Café, Niagara Falls, NY was officially dedicated. The 48 seat room is decorated with artifacts from BMHOF inductees, some of which came from my personal collection, and showcase many genres of music. All the artifacts also have plaques that describe who the artists are and what their contribution to music is/was. This is a one-of-a-kind room in the Hard Rock chain. The Hard Rock is still a very important partner of the BMHOF. My time with the BMHOF ended in December of 2018.

During this time, I had been asked by the Musicians of Buffalo, AKA “The MOB”, to perform at a fundraiser with Old Friends. The MOB consists of BMHOF inductees Jessie Galante, “Buffalo’s First Lady of Rock”, legendary bassist, Billy Sheehan and my friend and guitar virtuso Bobby Lebel. After a few years of performing, I became the director of the show, which currently happens once a year at Christmastime. Proceeds of the show have been donated to the Sportsmen’s Americana Music Foundation and Robbie Takac’s Music is Art organization. I recently joined the board of the Sportsmen’s Americana Music Foundation (SAMF) and was just getting going when the COVID-19 virus hit and put everything on hiatus.

Can you tell us about your record collection and / or autographs? How

did you get started?

I am also an audiophile and have amassed a small, but important collection of vinyl records and CD’s. I ironically started my collection in 2007, not for the music, but for the album artwork. I was redecorating my son’s old bedroom and wanted it to be music-themed. At that time used vinyl albums could be picked up for a buck or two. I was specifically looking for albums with my favorite artists: Milton Glaser, Roger Dean, Frank Frazetta and Al Hirschfeld to name a few. That got me to thinking that I needed a record player. I had never owned one as my older brother had a great system when we were younger and shared a room. I started with an inexpensive record player, but now I have a nice system to play 33’s and a second vintage unit from the 1970s that I had refurbished that I use to play 45’s and 78’s.

I have many national and international artists in my collection, but one of my great joys is collecting records of local Buffalo musicians. My collection started as an offshoot from the BMHOF. My goal was to get at least one recording from every inductee and I’m still working on that. As the chair of the Annual Induction gala for the BMHOF, I was able to meet the inductees. Part of my joy when meeting these artists is to have them autograph a recording or a piece of ephemera. For anyone who is lucky enough to inherit my collection some day, they will be pleased to know, that along with recordings or posters and framed artwork, are written stories about each of the artists or specific times in their life. I’ve always thought that the stories that go along with the recordings make for a nice package. It would be nice to donate my collection at a future date to a museum or organization that could showcase the great music story of our area.

Who are some of your favorite artists that you'd recommend?

I have many local favorites, including Hall of Famers, Billy, Bobby, and Jessie from the MOB, Dwane Hall and Doug Yeaomans, Sammy Slicker, George Puleo, Michael Hund, Tom Lorentz, Robert “Freightrain” Parker, Joanie Marshall and the entire Schriver family, Gary Mallaber, Stan Szelest and the list goes on. Some new, young musicians that I greatly enjoy are Zak Ward, Megan Brown and Grosh, Sarah Elizabeth Schall, Gregory Zeiss and Jessica Chizuk.

National favorites include all of the original pioneers of rockabilly including, Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eddie Cochrane, Janis Martin, Wanda Jackson, Johnny Cash. Other favorites include Brian Setzer, Janis Joplin, The Carter Family, Norah Jones, David Byrne, Squeeze and a great variety of artists from many different genres.

Your favorite performance?

I have seen many of these artists live and have seen Brian Setzer in all his combos; Stray Cats, Brian Setzer Orchestra and Rockabilly Riot, twelve times. I was also very fortunate to meet Brian in person at the Hammerstein Ballroom in 2010. A friend of mine knew Brian’s management and arranged a meet and greet. I got to meet my guitar hero and was not disappointed. He was a true gentleman, and of course put on a heckuva show with the BSO that night. I was actually able to meet the entire band. That was a true thrill. But, my favorite live experience was David Byrne’s American Utopia show at the UB Center for the Arts a few years ago. My wife and I were lucky enough to have a close-up view of this show that was in development at the time. It absolutely blew me away.

How do you suggest people get involved and support their favorite bands?

With the advent of music going digital and programs that allowed for the illegal download of music, has led to musicians having a very hard time making a living. Much time, effort and money goes in to creating a recorded song, and many people think, because they can access it on a computer, that they don’t need to pay for it. I’m not a fan of streaming services. One big reason is the artists don’t get much of anything monetarily from these services, and most of the songs are so compressed, they don’t sound they way they were recorded an intended. Please support musicians by BUYING their music and merchandise. Purchase a download, CD or vinyl album. BUY their merch. Go see them LIVE. I make a point to bring enough money to a live show to purchase a CD or vinyl album if available. Also, follow your favorite musicians on social media and share their posts. Musicians will not be around if we don’t support them evangelically and financially.

What's it like to team up with Cats Like Us?

Are you still with me? If you are, thank you. And a big thanks to Andrew and Julie Ann from Cats Like Us (CLU). They have been friends of mine for about 10 years. We met at a Swing Dance event at the Hamlin House in Buffalo. Over the years, my wife and I have both purchased apparel from CLU. As a matter of fact, bowling shirts have become my signature look. I wear shirts from CLU and pair them with cool shoes, eyeglasses, and a vintage-inspired hairstyle. I would say my style is an updated version of a retro look and CLU provides an outlet for me achieve that look. Ironically, I was at a golf tournament and I was wearing a baseball hat and a gold shirt, and a friend of mine didn’t recognize me. He said without the hair and shirt, he didn’t know who I was!

The reason it took so long to open is that they wanted to do a cat cafe right, and it shows. I can't say enough good things about this place. The building is in downtown Buffalo, NY and they completely gutted and rehabbed the inside and part of the outside. Even though the inside is small, the giant front windows, streamlined interior, and clean look make it nice and bright. You feel like you're in a much more cosmopolitan city like Toronto! 

The Right Menu

The front part of the cafe is a an actual cafe with a big variety of coffee and tea drinks, nibbles, AND they have local beer and wine! The atmosphere was calm and filled with students working on laptops and people reading. We were running errands on Sunday and ended up getting there a little early for our 2 o'clock Cat Zone appointment, so we ate lunch. Both of us opted for a beer/ hard cider and a BLT. They have a tempeh bacon option if you are vegetarian too! The sandwich had bacon, tomato, mayo, cucumber, and sprouts. It was simple and tasty. After lunch I had a hot tea and they have a nice variety of fresh loose tea. The quality of their cafe is impressive. It's hard to find a restaurant that serves good loose tea, or even loose tea in general!

They have vintage cat planters for sale, along with locally made cat toys and goodies. You know I'm all about the vintage!

As the saying goes... Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. We can cover three out of four, sorry you can't borrow from us. If you did, we wouldn't be able to stay open!

Let's start with the "old" shall we? The dresses listed here are true vintage, and some may be a little unconventional, but I know if you're reading this YOU'RE not conventional! It's YOUR wedding, so make it your own.

One of the best things about wearing vintage is that you are giving life to a beautiful piece that may be otherwise tossed into a landfill. It will be reborn and photographed with you to live on! Not only will your dress be totally unique, vintage is often cheaper than what you can find at the bridal shops today, even if you have to alter it. 

Wedding Dress

This 1950s Brocade Dress, subtly embellished with rhinestones, would make a stunning entrance at your wedding. It's a classic cocktail sheath dress to hug your curves without being too racy. It even has the original belt! 

Here's another brocade lovely, but this time she has sequins and beading! This 1950s Ivory Brocade Dress is a fitted style and it has your beloved pockets! It's missing the belt, so you can add your own to match the bridal party...or not. It's your special day, wear anything you want! Did I mention it has pockets?

Maybe you prefer something slightly newer? Here's a 1960s Cream Lace Dress ~ while still being a sheath style ~ has lace sleeves and a simpler design. You can add gold OR silver accessories, or even just pearls to keep it first-class.

Need more of a swingy style? We have it! This 1950s Ivory Flocked Swing Dress is here to please! It comes with its own removable underskirt crinoline, so you can replace it with a colorful one to make the print "pop", that's only if you want to. After all, it's YOUR wedding. ;)

We've been through quite a bit. So far we have survived our building being hit by a car, trademark infringement (someone stole our logo), two commercials, hosting many MANY in-store events, fighting to get a park bench out front, finding "treasures" on said bench, being audited, a leaky roof, ten Canal Fests (Tonawantonians understand), becoming part of #retroblocktonawanda, pivoting to sell vintage in addition to retro, winning several Artvoice and Buffalo Spree awards, and much more!

They all start off as sketches first, then building and painting, then hunting for all the vintage elements. A lot of times I travel all over to collect things for each one. The kitchen was the first set completed and it was pieces of a real kitchen from a house built in 1947 on Huxley Ave. The house only ever had two owners so I knew the state of the kitchen besides a faucet update was original to the home. I even took chips from the original paint to Home Depot to match the paint exactly to its original state."

The lovely lady featured in our Everyday is Halloween Collection banner is Chevygrrl. Known locally for founding the Nickel City Dolls and as an internationally published pinup, we decided to get to know her a little more!

What's the story behind your pinup name?

My Name is Anjie, but in the pinup world I go by Chevygrrl. Back in 1995, I bought my first classic car, a 1972 Chevelle. Also around this time was the wonderful world of the AOL chatroom and I needed a handle. One of my customers at the bar I was working at would always call me “that Chevy girl” so I thought it would make an interesting name for the chatrooms. Flash forward to about 4 years ago when I was thinking of a pinup name... I had just bought my second classic car, a 1963 Chevy II Nova, and thought it was only fitting that I brought back the Chevygrrl name as my pinup persona.

How long have you been interested in the pinup scene? What do you like most about it?

My interest in the pinup scene here locally began about 7 years ago when I was attending The Cavalcade of Cars at the Hamburg Fairgrounds. It was around that time that they started the Old S’cool Review Room where all the local hot rods and rat rods were featured. As we were walking around we saw some of the finest dressed women, from head to toe they were dressed to kill. I wanted to be them! They had so much confidence and grace. I needed to find that within myself. So I started to do a ton of research on how to do the classic hairstyles and experimented with different makeup styles. What I love the most about the pinup scene is that it really is a true sisterhood and we all share with each other tips and tricks that we have all learned through the years.

You've been featured in many magazines; do you have any advice for pinups starting out?

If you are just starting your own pinup transformation the best thing to do is research. You can never know too much! There are so many different styles of pinup. If you are into cars and music such as me you might be more comfortable in rockabilly styling. Whatever you choose just make it your own and be comfortable. That goes for hair and makeup as well. If you struggle with victory rolls don’t wear them, can’t do a winged eyeliner don’t worry and just do what works for you. There are no rules!

Throughout this journey of finding myself, I started doing pinup photoshoots just like many of our members. Many of The Nickel City Dolls have been published in numerous magazines. I have been fortunate enough to be published in 11 magazines 2 of which are international publications. I had no clue what I was doing and boy was I nervous but working with Destiny Rogowski of Sweet Heart Pin Up Studio made it so much fun and the chats we have while she is doing the hair and makeup actually make you forget that you are about to be in front of a camera. The best thing to do is make every photoshoot unique to you and your personality. Don’t try to copy everything you see in the magazines. Most importantly have fun!

Speaking of the Nickel City Dolls, what made you start this group? How long has it been going on? What exactly do you do?

About 3 years ago I found myself in a rut. The husband was off doing band things or car club things and I found myself sitting at home alone a lot. I had a beautiful car sitting in the garage that was just begging to be driven so I started going to cruise nights. What I noticed at these events was there are a lot of women that go to cruise nights and usually end up sitting alone while the men are off talking about car stuff. So I started chatting with these ladies and come to find out they know just as much about cars and the men do! I thought what better way to get out of my rut than to bring together a kick-ass group of women who enjoy doing car related things. It started out as just a social club with hopes to just get the group out to car shows or just do dinner dates. What we have grown into is a 100% volunteer group. When asked to attend events we usually sell 50/50 tickets for the event, or whatever help the event might need. These events can be for veterans groups, animal rescue groups, bike nights and cruise nights.

Currently, we have 20 members including myself. I honestly could not do this without these ladies. The love and compassion they show for our community is overwhelming sometimes. So to Kathy K, Pam W, Kris O, Kasia, Erin F, Pam E, Faith, Amy, Kathy C, Kelly, Amanda, Erin M, Stacy, Emily, Shirley, Cynthia, Sarah, Rose, Alicia thank you for support, your selflessness, and your time.

What events have you planned with the Dolls, what are you working on, what events do you have coming up? Which ones are you the proudest of/ excited about?

For 2 years now The Nickel City Dolls have hosted an event at the Buffalo Zoo called “Pinups at the Zoo”. This is a national event that is hosted throughout the year in different cities, some of which do a Spring and a Fall date. With the help of many local businesses and artists, we have been able to provide gift bags to the attendees both years. For 2020 we are planning a Pinup Picnic, a High Tea at a local antique shop and tea house and of course the 3^rd annual “Pinups at the Zoo”.

This year has been a busy year for us and this is probably what I am the proudest of and excited for. We were asked to be the street team for the 19^th Annual Food Bank Run/Rally and Car Cruise-In. So as a group we have all been hitting up all the cruise nights and bike nights handing out fliers and spreading awareness of the Food Bank of Western New York. This event takes place on September 14^th starting and ending at the Newell – Faulkner American Legion Post 880 in Eden NY with stops at Gowanda Harley Davidson and The Outer Harbor in Buffalo NY. Along with this, we have been doing 50/50 ticket sales at Kettles in Orchard Park on Monday nights during their weekly cruise nights. We were able to help them surpass the amount they made last year by a couple of hundred dollars. American Harley Davidson has also allowed us to come to a few of their events this Summer to sell 50/50 tickets for this run as well.

What's it like to team up with Cats Like Us?

What an honor it was for me when Julie Ann and Andrew asked me to model for them and interview me for their blog. The photoshoot was so much fun and Julie Ann’s styling was amazing. If you need help for a photoshoot, car show, or even a pinup contest please ask her advice, she has a wealth of knowledge from true vintage to all the Repro brands. Anyone who knows me personally knows that I am a huge supporter of the Shop Small, Shop Local movement and Cats Like Us will always be my go-to store for all of my pinup needs.

Do you like Halloween?

Halloween has been my favorite holiday since I was a child. I love coming up with an idea for a costume and creating it from scratch. Some recent costumes have included a goldfish, a jellyfish, and a rain cloud.

Can you tell us about the Rambler car that's featured in the Cats Like Us image?

The car featured here is my husband’s 1959 AMC Rambler. This car is very much like Frankenstein’s monster. She is comprised of many parts from other makes of cars. The engine is a Chevy 350 small block, the rear end is out of a Ford Explorer just to name a couple.

Channel your inner Joan Crawford with this 1940s LBD! Add a half updo and a sparkly bracelet and you're a star darling! But please no wire hangers.

June Cleaver was known for keeping the home on Leave it to Beaver spotless in her pearls and full shirt dresses. This dress is the perfect shirt dress to get the 1950s housewife look! (Don't forget the pearls! We have a nice variety of vintage strands available here and for more shirt dresses both retro AND vintage find them here. They are great for all seasons, just add a sweater!)

Jackie O was a fashion-forward lady in her coat dresses and chic style that she made look oh so easy. Here's a fancy coat dress, just add her signature pillbox hat and long gloves and you'll be the most stylish person in the room! (Bonus: You can wear both pieces separately!)

There's no place like home, and there's no dress like this one! Dorothy Gale would be jealous. Just add some red shoes, pigtails, and a basket! 

For a less specific costume, why not try the 1960s? Just add a flippy 'do with a headband. 

For an even more casual look, wear this new old stock tunic top with some black skinny jeans, black sunglasses, and a beret and you're ready to present your spoken word poem at the Beatnick coffee shop. Two snaps.

 Maybe a Witch is more your speed? I've been called worse! Here's a vintage dress complete with lace bell sleeves. Add a witchy hat and that's it!

Speaking of witches, can you do magic? Everyone can if you put your mind to it. ;) How about a Magician tuxedo dress? Add a bow tie, cuffs, and top hat. Don't forget the rabbit!

Tennis anyone? Add a tennis racket, this can double as a Sailor look too! Add a little white hat, don't limit yourself!

Put on the flowing hat like the Princess that you are! Or use this to be a modern Glinda the Good Witch!

 Queen of Hearts can be as easy as wearing this dress. Add a crown and heart scepter.

 Do you have the skills of a leader, why not Girl Scout troop leader?! Like I said shirt dresses are the best!

 Cowboy is a classic and Gene Autry agrees. Add a neck bandana and cowboy hat.

 I was going to go with a vintage idea for the Hawaiian shirts, but I guess Magnum PI is vintage now. Make sure you tuck this shirt into your stonewashed jeans, wear bright white sneakers, and grow out that 'stache!

For funny costume...

If you like food, why not TV dinner? Add a headband with peas and carrots. I guarantee no one else will have this costume.

What to do at VIVA

The VIVA Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender itself is jam packed, so there's always something to do! It might seem obvious, but read the program and get a lay of the land, and the schedule of events and bands. Some vendors put discount codes in there too!

You're sure to find your favorite Rockabilly band and discover a few you didn't know. Be aware that some of the bands overlap so you will want to prioritize which ones you choose to see.

If you're a classic car fan, you will not be disappointed by the car show Saturday. Be sure to wear sunscreen, the sun is HOT in Vegas, and you don't want to spend your trip tending to a bad sunburn!

Shop the vendor area(s) in the hotel and car show too, and please support them! They support the scene and advertise with the event (like Cats Like Us) to help make such a VLV possible.

What to do in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is pretty spectacular on its own, so take a walk down the strip and check out the sights. We love the fountains at The Bellagio and the Flamingos at The Flamingo - both free and a short ride from the event. Old Vegas and The Freemont Experience light show are a must if you want the full tourist experience.

If you like TIKI (and who doesn't?) you must go to Frankie's Tiki Room (open 24 hours!) and The Golden Tiki. Watch those drinks though - they sneak up on you!

If you like antique, check out the Charleston Antique Mall, or visit the shops on South Main Street.

What to wear

We probably get asked "What do I wear?" the most about VLV. The event is so huge that honestly, you can get away with anything. There are some people dressed to the absolute nines as classic Hollywood 1940's... and some people are in jeans and a T-shirt. Basically, any of the usual vintage/retro/rockabilly styles are fair game. Choose your favorite retro look and run with it!

Some good advice is whatever style you choose, try and be put together (Hair + Outfit + Makeup + Attitude = THE LOOK). The key (as always) is to have fun and wear what you feel comfortable in, and try not to be too concerned about competing with others.

Just keep in mind if you choose a standard (ex. Rosy the Riveter), you may not stand out as much as something off the wall (ex. Creature From the Black Lagoon). And if you purchase retro (new) there will be someone else there wearing that same dress... so naturally, we suggest wearing VINTAGE which, by the way is available at Cats Like Us ;)

How to pack

I too am overwhelmed when packing for VLV. I used to teach packing seminars and I made a video with some advice that I hope is useful:

1. If possible try to plan what you are doing each day. i.e. do I need to bring more casual or more dressy outfits? Do I need a bathing suit? If I'm dancing the night away (which I hope to be doing) I need to bring more swing dresses and less pencil skirts etc.

2. This sounds crazy but try to stick with outfits in three or four colors. Choose a base color like black and go from there. My choices this year are black, white, pink and grey. This limits the amount of shoes you have to bring along and enables you to mix and match if necessary.

3. Bring 'multi taskers'. i.e. Pack a black and white sun dress. You can wear it with sandals, a hat and tote-bag during the day but dress it up at night with fancy heels, a clutch, matching hair flower, patent belt and rhinestone jewelry. One less outfit to bring!

4. As far as packing goes, open your suitcase and lay down your outfits flat over it-- one on top of the other. Don't fold them. Once they are all laid down flat you'll have pant legs and sleeves hanging out over your suitcase, don't tuck them in yet. Push the flat items down to the bottom, then fold and roll your PJs, T shirts and anything else that you don't have to worry about wrinkling. Place the rolled items on top of the flat ones, THEN fold your pant legs and sleeves that are sticking out from the flat clothes on top of the rolled clothes.

5. One trick is to wear the heaviest or bulkiest clothes so you don't have to pack them. If you bring jeans, it's better to wear them. Last year I wore my crinoline through the airport and on the plane, (under the appropriate skirt of course.)

Is it the contrasting colors in parallel lines that are classic and never go out of style? Is it that it’s a print without really being a print? Is it looking like being in the French navy? I would have to say YES to all of the above!

Hello, my name is Julie Ann and I have a stripe addiction. For some of you it’s leopard, for others it's polka dots, but for me it’s stripes.

My introduction to wearing stripes started when I was about 18 with a single top. It was a navy blue and white striped boat neck with 3/4 length sleeves. I wore it with jeans, skirts, under T shirts, over tank tops, and with shorts. I loved it so much I bought it in three other color combinations.

Where did this fashion originate? Well, it comes from the French navy uniform.  It made its first appearance just after the 1858 Act of France. Originally the uniform had 21 stripes for each of Napoleon’s victories, a “boatneck” collar, and was called the Breton.

The Breton became a mainstream clothing staple when Coco Chanel introduced it in her 1917 nautical clothing line.  Thank you Coco!

Classic Style

Naturalizer has been my go to for years. I stand at work a lot an they are pretty comfortable. Many of their shoes start at a size 4 and go up to 12. Here's a 1940s style they are currently carrying, but they have others that would suit your vintage outfit.

Remix Vintage makes beautiful repro shoes spanning 1920's-1950's. I own a pair, and they are the most comfortable sandals ever. I'm a fan of their spectator style, although a little pricey they are worth it.

Then there's B.A.I.T. Footwear that came on the scene recently. They experiment with different styles and colors, often featuring 1960s inspired footwear, many go up to a size 11, and are made of Man Made Materials aka "vegan".

There's Miss L. Fire known for funky vintage inspired styles.

Finally, Royal Vintage has 1920's-1940's reproduction shoes and occasionally Bettie Page Shoes have some great vintage inspired styles.

Flats

If you know me, you've seen me wear ballet flats. I wear them with everything and my favorite ones come from Aerosoles. They have a cushioned flexible sole that looks like a honeycomb.

Saddle Shoes & Penny Loafers

You can't go wrong with Bass saddle shoes and penny loafers. I have swing dance friends that swear by them. They transcend time and are a classic worn by men and women from the 1930s through today AND the loafers come in tons of different colors!

Sneakers

Keds and Converse sneakers are equally as comfy and come in a variety of colors too. They are for more of a casual vintage look.

They are so comfortable even the gangs in West Side Story danced in them!

For people confused about the difference between vintage and retro can you explain the difference?

"Vintage" when talking about clothing, is old clothing made older than 20-30 years ago. So, right now, anything older than 1999 is considered vintage when talking about clothing. Makes you feel old, right?! "Retro" usually means new clothes in vintage style.

You didn't always carry vintage clothing at Cats Like Us. What made you decide to start?

Up until last year we only sold retro (new) clothing in the store. This is going to sound crazy, but it came to me in a dream. We were out of town for Andrew’s grandmother’s funeral and I was having a hard time sleeping and when I woke up ~ for the first time since opening Cats Like Us ~ I seriously considered carrying vintage. Maybe she told me to!

Customers have asked why we don’t sell vintage and I have avoided it in the past, because it can be a lot of work. First you have to find it, and it’s getting harder and harder to find. It may need to be cleaned and repaired, and finally the sizing isn’t the same what it is today. That being said it is fun to find and our vintage inventory helps differentiate us from other "retro" clothing sellers.

Another thing to think about is that ~ in a way ~ wearing vintage clothing is recycling. Watching all the clothes that end up in a landfill is discouraging, not to mention how some workers are treated where new clothing is made. We wanted to help, even if it’s just in a small part to help with the environment.

What do you like about vintage clothing?

I love that it’s unique from modern retro offerings. Vintage items are basically one of a kind, so if you are looking for an item to wear in a pinup contest or big rockabilly event (I’m looking at you Viva Las Vegas) chances are if you choose something vintage no one else will be wearing it!

I also love the quality. The fabrics and structure are better than anything being made today. They often have little touches that make the items special, like a bow, fancy buttons, or a funky pocket.

What background do you have with vintage?

I’ve worn vintage since my teens because I always preferred the style to current trends.

In order to learn more about vintage I spent some time working in a vintage shop in Buffalo. Each time I came into work I learned about a new designer or style that I didn’t know about before! We did a ton of business for the World's Largest Disco, a local event.

My schooling background is in Art History, specifically Modern Art which spans 1900 through the 1970s. That time frame coincides with vintage fashion and often the things going on in art paralleled the style of the time. Let's face it, some clothing IS ART!

You try and carry all sizes in retro, but do you also have a range of sizes in vintage?

Surprisingly yes! Vintage can sometimes have a bad reputation of being small, but larger sizes were available. The sizing may be different from modern sizing, but we have found vintage in what would be XS-XXL and then some, and carry a whole range. We have always tried to be inclusive of all sizes, if they are available we get them!

We hand measure everything we sell online, so if you know your measurements you can know if an item will fit! We are always happy to answer any questions about it too.

Do you collect vintage? Is there a specific designer or style you particularly like?

Personally, yes. I’m more drawn to certain fabrics and styles rather than specific designers. I do love Lilly Pulitzer because even though she’s a big name her clothes are everyday wearable. The same goes for Vera scarves, and I even have a Vera blouse from the 1960s! You can find a Jonathan Logan dress that’s stunning, but where can you wear it unless it’s somewhere super fancy? Plus I’m a klutz and would ruin anything really fancy!

What is  the most interesting particular vintage item you have found?

I have a two piece 1960s tiki shorts set. The fabric of the top and shorts matches, and it even has a matching belt, and the shorts are reversible!
