Federico Uribe (b. 1962) grew up in Bogota, Colombia. After graduating from the University of Los Andes in Bogota in 1988, Federico continued his study of academic painting in New York under Luis Camnitzer. He traveled to work and study in Cuba, Mexico, Russia, England, and landed in Miami, Florida in 2000 where he lives today. After years of struggling to be a painter, Federico realized that his calling was not to draw or paint on canvas, but instead to mold inanimate objects into vibrant images. His current series of sculptural works uses commonplace materials such as colored pencils, electric cables or shoelaces, to create whimsical figures and animal forms. This particular group of works is made from ammunition, giving these symbols of violence a peaceful new purpose.

Robert Stark (1933 - 2014) was a luminist, painting principally in oil on canvas and panel. Luminism takes its name from light and refers to the subtle coloristic effects that sunlight, ever changing in intensity, produces on land, sea and in the sky. He saw the New England coast as a place where people have lived long and worked hard and feel part of the land and sea. He attended Nantucket schools and after graduating from Nantucket High School, served in the Navy during the Korean War. His work is represented in numerous private and corporate collections in the US, Canada, Ireland, Great Britain, Germany, France, China and the Baseball Hall of Fame, Cooperstown, N.Y. His now iconic red catboat paintings have been avidly collected by Nantucket island visitors from around the world. Stark took great pride in his family’s place in the centuries-old New England tradition of making the land and sea one’s own. With his refined style and unique voice, Stark translated the land and sea he inhabited into unforgettable works of art.

American Master Jamie Wyeth pays tribute to a Banana Split

A celebrated contemporary realist painter, Jamie Wyeth is also the third-generation of the famed American artistic dynasty, following in the footsteps of Andrew Wyeth and N.C. Wyeth. Though many of his works reflect the eternal beauty of the Maine landscape, as do many works by Andrew Wyeth, Jamie’s work is distinguished by his focus on the enduring dignity of domestic animals and wildlife, as well as depicting important individuals and cultural events in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Jamie Wyeth has created portraits of political and entertainment figures, including President John F. Kennedy, Rudolf Nureyev, Andy Warhol, and Arnold Schwarzenegger; charcoal drawings that documented the unfolding drama of the Senate Watergate hearings; pictorial reporting of NASA space launches and splashdowns; and imaginative pictures for contemporary novelist Stephen King's ABC-TV miniseries Kingdom Hospital, to name a few.

Wyeth spends a substantial portion of his time on the Maine coast, where the landscape and local inhabitants -- animal and human -- serve as subjects for his work. He paints primarily in a combination of mediums such as gouache, watercolor, and oil, having never developed an affinity for the egg tempera medium favored by his father, Andrew Wyeth. Banana Split focuses on one of Jamie Wyeth’s favored subjects, the seagull, as he approaches a decadent ice cream treat. With compelling imagery, strong contrasts, and tactile surfaces, Jamie Wyeth's works are always marked with a portrait-like intensity, whether they depict people, animals, architecture, objects, or the continually unfolding interaction between mankind and nature.

Jamie Wyeth’s works can be found in private collections world-wide, as well as the permanent collections of prestigious museums including the National Gallery of Art and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Bjorn Skaarup’s first major NYC exhibition is now open!

Bjorn Skaarup’s monumental “Hippo Ballerina” arrives in Dante Park!

The colossal bronze, Hippo Ballerina, by Bjørn Okholm Skaarup has landed on Broadway! The sculpture will be on exhibit from Feb. 7 – July 31, 2017, at NYC’s Dante Park at the intersection of 64th Street and Broadway. The installation is part of the NYC Parks’ Art in the Parks program, giving the Hippo Ballerina a pride of place right across from Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Joseph McGurl’s Painting Wins Prestigious Award!

Massachusetts artist, Joseph McGurl, is an accomplished contemporary landscape painter, often preferring to work en plein air so that he can immerse himself in his surroundings and interpret them on site. He notably does not rely on photography in his work, choosing to leave the details to observation, memory, and imagination.

The painting, Cuttyhunk, View to the West, received honorable mention in the Landscape Category for the prestigious 12^th Annual Art Renewal Center Salon Competition. The painting will be exhibited along with other award winners at the Salmagundi Club in New York from May 12 – June 1, followed by the Museum of Modern Art, Barcelona, Spain from September 23 – November 27.

McGurl began his studies under his father, James McGurl, a highly regarded muralist. He furthered his studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and The Massachusetts College of Art, and he attended summer programs in London and Florence. While in Florence, he studied under Robert Cormier, a distinguished Boston artist devoted to French Academy methods. Cormier had a strong influence on McGurl’s technique, teaching him the sight-size method which he often uses to approach his plein air works.

McGurl is a member of the Plein Air Painters of America, and he was the youngest person ever to have won the John Singleton Copley Award from the Copley Society of Boston. He has also been honored with a Grumbacher Gold Medallion from the Guild of Boston Artists. McGurl's paintings have been included in several museum exhibitions throughout the country including the Cape Cod Museum of Art, The Cahoon Museum of American Art, and the Saint Botolph Club of Boston.

Great American Artist John Marin

John Marin was one of the foremost American abstract painters, giving rise to the Abstract Expressionist movement in the early 20th Century. Marin is well known for his innovative use of the watercolor medium, creating a unique blend of realism and abstraction in his depictions of American scenery. Late in his career, Marin began to focus on the oil medium, which became the basis of further artistic experimentation for him. In the book John Marin by John Marin, edited by Cleve Gray, Marin states, "Using paint as paint is different from using paint to paint a picture. I'm calling my pictures this year 'Movements in Paint' and not Movements of Boat, Sea, or Sky, because in these new paintings -- although I use objects -- I am representing paint first of all, and not the motif primarily." This approach is evident in Movement VI, as is the artist's masterful and inventive use of color.

During his life, Marin’s work was continuously shown at Alfred Stieglitz’s famed 291 Gallery, known for introducing America to many important avante-garde artists such as Rodin, Matisse, and Picasso. Marin participated in the seminal Armory Show in 1913, and was subsequently honored with exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1924, and the Museum of Modern Art in 1936. Today Marin’s works can be found in many prominent museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Gallery of Art, and also in the Green Room of the White House.

Wolf Kahn, Iconic Landscape Painter

Born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1927, Wolf Kahn immigrated to the United States in 1940. In 1945, he graduated from the High School of Music & Art in New York, after which he spent time in the Navy. Under the GI Bill, he studied with renowned teacher and Abstract Expressionist painter Hans Hofmann, later becoming Hofmann’s studio assistant. In 1950, he enrolled in the University of Chicago and completed his degree in just one year.

Kahn has received a Fulbright Scholarship, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and an Award in Art from the Academy of Arts and Letters. On January 12, 2017 the US Department of State recognized Wolf Kahn with the International Medal of Arts, an honor acknowledging artists who have played an exemplary role in advancing the U.S. Department of State's mission of promoting cultural diplomacy.

Traveling extensively, Kahn has painted landscapes in Egypt, Greece, Hawaii, Italy, Kenya, Maine, Mexico, and New Mexico. Many of his iconic forest landscapes are inspired by his home in Vermont, where he has spent his much of his time over the last 40 years. His unique blend of representation and colorism sets his work apart, with an unparalleled use of color producing a rich and expressive body of work.

Wolf Kahn regularly exhibits at galleries and museums across North America. His work can be found in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; The Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; The National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C.; and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA, among other institutions.

Contemporary impressionist John Terelak was born in Boston, Massachusetts and has flourished in the robust artistic community of Gloucester, MA for the last 50 years. Terelak began his studies at the Vesper George School of Fine Art, and went on to teach there, as well as founding his own school, the Gloucester Academy of Fine Arts. After years of teaching, Terelak devoted himself to painting full time and has since enjoyed a very successful career.

In this work, we see the bustling marketplace of the historic Boston landmark, Faneuil Hall. While Terelak finds inspiration for his work all around the world, his often returns to his roots in Boston, where he creates some of his strongest compositions. In all of Terelak’s paintings, you find his distinctively fresh application of paint with rich plays of color and light.

Terelak’s paintings are in private and corporate collections throughout the US, and have been included in exhibitions at The National Academy, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, The Springfield Museums, as well as The Butler Institute of American Art.

Larry Poons, Iconic Abstract Expressionist Painter

Larry Poons, born in 1937, continues to this day to produce impressive and fresh paintings as an icon of abstract expressionism. Throughout his career, he has focused on bold abstraction and distinctive applications of paint to the canvas, often using unconventional methods such as pouring and throwing of paint. In this work, “Ballerina of Darts”, created in 2012, a series of small gestures and fields of color build across the canvas creating a truly dynamic composition.

Poons began his artistic training in the 1950’s at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and achieved early success with a one-man show at the famed Green Gallery in 1963, followed by his inclusion in a 1965 exhibition at MoMa titled “The Responsive Eye”. His work has been featured in numerous Museum exhibitions over the last five decades, and is also included in the permanent collections of such prestigious institutions as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; Tate Modern, London, United Kingdom; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY.

The exhibition highlights the development and diversity of landscape painting in America over the past century and a half, with a focus on regional works from New England and New York.

Juxtaposing historical pieces with contemporary works, this special collection of American landscape paintings shows the continuity and changes in the genre over the last 150 years. Though landscape’s role in the art world has changed continuously, this important genre will not fall out of favor. Artists continue to paint what they see from their own unique perspectives, making each interpretation distinctly unique.

Contemporary artist Nancy Depew masterfully combines traditional realist technique with a modern approach to subject, resulting in vivid and provocative works. Each delicate petal of a flower reveals itself as it is vibrantly illuminated against the deep background. This approach to composition is used in many of Depew’s works, allowing the artist and viewer to explore the intricate beauty and play of light on a single flower.

Depew studied at Lycoming College in Pennsylvania, and went on to receive her MFA from the University at Albany, State University of New York. She has been honored with fellowships in her home state from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, as well as the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation Inc. Depew has been exhibiting her work in galleries, museums, and art fairs throughout the US over the last several decades, while also teaching studio art and art history at art schools, museums, and other arts institutions.

Depew says of her artwork: “I do not know what the finished painting will look like when I begin. I start with a gesture. It is a visual idea, an intuitive idea, not a verbal or rational one. I am not interested in documenting reality. I make three-dimensionally believable images, but I never think of them as ‘real.’ I am more interested in investigating the intuitive aspect of a subject. I dig into the nature of experience.”

Award-winning photojournalist Ruth Orkin (1921-1985) was an adventurous traveler, with a camera always at the ready. Throughout her career she photographed New York City street scenes and cityscapes, celebrities, and musicians, but the most noted image of her collection is certainly the “American Girl in Italy”. In 1951, following an assignment in Israel, Ruth set out on her own to travel in Europe. While in Florence, Italy she met Jinx Allen (Ninalee Craig) as both young, single, American women were traveling on their own and found themselves at the same hotel along the Arno River. Connecting over their shared travel experiences, they set out with Jinx as model, and Ruth as photographer, to capture the reality of being an American girl in Italy. In this famed shot, Ruth Orkin captured the essence of the experience, the young woman having captivated every man on the block, admiring her with great enthusiasm as she struts by with confidence. In the eyes of the model and photographer, this image was a celebration of strong, independent women who weren’t afraid to live life.

Orkin returned to New York and in 1952 married the photographer and filmmaker Morris Engel. Together they produced two feature films, including the classic “Little Fugitive” which was nominated for an Academy Award in 1953. From their New York apartment overlooking Central Park, Orkin photographed marathons, parades, concerts, demonstrations, and the beauty of the changing seasons. These photographs were the subject of two widely acclaimed books, “A World Through My Window” and “More Pictures From My Window.”

As a journalist, Orkin photographed for many prominent publishers including The New York Times andLIFE Magazine, and her images have been included in exhibitions at prominent New York museums including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of the City of New York, The Jewish Museum, and the International Center for Photography.

This photograph is a large scale print from the original negative. It is from a limited edition, numbered 6/15. The photograph is signed and titled on the back by Mary Engel, daughter of the photographer and director of the Ruth Orkin Estate. It also includes an artist's embossed signature stamp on the front.
