Exercising is usually associated with losing weight or gaining muscle strength, but did you know that exercising can strengthen your bones, too? Your bones are kind of like muscles in the way that they are made up of living tissue and can get stronger when they are worked out. Exercising can help improve or maintain muscle strength, coordination, and balance which can help prevent falls and fractures. Older adults who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis are especially encouraged to exercise because of the many benefits to the body it brings.

Exercising for your Bones

While all exercise is a great way to improve your strength, there are certain types of exercises that are a better fit for bone strength and are easier to manage when you are dealing with something like osteoporosis. According to the Surgeon General, the goal is to have at least thirty minutes of physical activity on most days, but if you can do it daily. If you have any health problems like heart trouble, diabetes, obesity, or being older than 40, ask your doctor before you start exercising regularly so they can let you know whether or not your body is able to handle that kind of physical stress.

Some of the best exercises that help people improve their bone mass are those that don’t require you to flex, bend, or twist; this is because those exercises can be harmful to your spine if you aren’t careful. You should also avoid high-impact exercises to lower the risk of breaking a bone. Some of the exercises you should be looking into if you have low bone density and would like to build your bone strength are:

Climbing Stairs

Brisk Walking

Water Aerobics

Tai Chi or Yoga

When you are first starting out, you should work with a specialist who can help guide you through your work out routines. Doing something wrong can make you injure yourself, and the whole point is to keep you safe! Talk to a specialist, and you can start with very easy exercises and work your way up to build more strength. Taking CBD oil for your bones may also be able to help because studies have shown that they promote bone growth, so ask your doctor about adding CBD hemp oil to your regimen for better success!

Knowing the stages of dementia is a great way to figure out future treatment plans, but you are probably wondering how long you have with your loved one before they start forgetting things like your name. While everyone is different and everyone progresses at different speeds, we do have a general idea of how long certain stages in dementia will last.

Stage 1

N/A

Stage 1 of dementia is considered no dementia. So this stage could last the rest of the senior’s life, or it could only last a few years.

Stage 2

Unknown

It is unknown how long this stage of dementia lasts, in part because the decline is only noticed in the individual who is developing the illness.

Stage 3

7 years on average

Stage three is when you start to notice things are different about your loved one. Forgetting things like where they put the keys or taking a few seconds to think of a word. This stage can be as hard to catch as the second stage because many of the changes are associated with old age.

Stage 4

2 years on average

In stage four, your loved one is going to start needing help with things like their finances or planning an event. You may even consider hiring someone to help them in their home or have them come stay with you and your family.

Stage 5

1.5 years on average

At this point, the senior needs even more help with things like making decisions and keeping track of their day.

Stage 6

3.5 to 9.5 months on average

At this point, there is very little that a senior with dementia can do on their own. They may need to start wearing an adult diaper because they can’t control their bladder or bowels.

Stage 7

1 to 1.5 years on average

At the latest stage of dementia, the ability to speak greatly declines and you may only be able to understand a few words they say. They likely will need support for their head and help walking or sitting up.

Time is Priceless

When you start to notice that your loved one is showing signs of dementia, it is an unfortunate race against the clock to spend as much time with your loved one as you can while they can still remember and enjoy their time with you. Don’t let the future make your present less enjoyable, cherish this time with your loved one.

Dementia is a difficult road that the entire family experiences. It can be hard to determine what is the best course of action when you don’t know what is coming next. Learning the stages of dementia can help you plan treatment and care for your loved one more effectively, making this road a bit less bumpy.

7 Stages of Dementia

There is a three-stage model of dementia which breaks it down to mild, moderate, and severe. But we like it when things are broken down even more because it gives you more accuracy with your treatment and care. Here are the seven stages of dementia and what to expect when you get there.

No Dementia

Stage 1: No Impairment

The first stage of dementia has no symptoms. In this stage, the individual has no cognitive or physical decline and functions normally. In the medical community, someone who hasn’t yet developed dementia can be considered stage 1.

Stage 2: Very Mild Cognitive Decline

The second stage of dementia can be a little sneaky considering losing your some of your memory can come with old age. Things like forgetting where you put your keys or small things like that are an indication of developing dementia as well as just being forgetful. It’s not likely that the family will even notice unless your loved one is known for an impeccable memory.

Stage 3: Mild Cognitive Decline

The third stage of dementia is when it becomes more noticeable to the family, the individual, and the physician. It will be harder to concentrate and forgetting things will be even more common. If they are working, you may notice a decline in their performance. In the third stage of dementia, your loved one may also have a hard time putting their words together.

Early-Stage Dementia

Stage 4: Moderate Cognitive Decline

In the fourth stage of dementia, your loved one may have a difficult time dealing with their finances, remembering events that happened recently, or have a difficult time traveling by themselves. Individuals with dementia can become in denial of their condition, wanting to take more control than they may be able to handle. At this point, a doctor can diagnose Alzheimer’s disease.

Mid-Stage Dementia

Stage 5: Moderately Severe Cognitive Decline

In the fifth stage of dementia, your loved one is going to need to start receiving help with daily activities like preparing food, getting dressed, or taking a bath. Certain important memories can slip like their address, phone number, or what day it is. Someone in the fifth stage of dementia may not be able to live alone anymore.

Stage 6: Severe Cognitive Decline

The sixth stage of dementia comes with some personality changes as well as worsened memory loss. They may forget family member’s names and may only remember very few recent events. They may also have a difficult time holding their bladder, and their speaking abilities can greatly decline. They may also suffer from delusions, anxiety, and compulsions at this stage.

Late-Stage Dementia

Stage 7: Very Severe Cognitive Decline – Final stage; communication is limited, physical systems also decline

In the seventh stage of dementia, your loved one may lose all ability to communicate. They may lose the ability to walk and need a lot of assistance with their everyday activities like bathing, eating, and getting dressed.

When to See a Doctor

Your loved one should be visiting the doctor regularly for check-ups as they age to be sure to catch any disease or disorder that tries to sneak in unnoticed. Unfortunately, many people don’t get attention for their dementia until it has started to take hold because the beginning stages are so hidden. There are ways you and your loved one can try to prevent or slow down the progression of dementia by changing your diet, exercising, and even taking supplements to help boost your brain power. One thing you should talk to your doctor about is taking CBD for dementia because studies show it may be able to help slow down the disease as well as relieve the individual of certain symptoms.

Sometimes it is hard to remember that the foods we eat are how we get the nutrients we need to stay stronger and healthier for longer. A lot of us just think about eating as a way to fix hunger. When it comes to your bone health, there are certain foods that you should try to fit into your diet to do more than just stop your stomach from growling.

1. Eggs

The morning is the perfect time to add new foods to your diet because it gets your day started on the right foot. If you don’t already eat eggs for breakfast, you should start! In rodent models, they found that egg yolk has the ability to increase bone mineral density and reduce cancellous bone loss.

2. Spinach

Pop-eye has some big muscles, he needs strong bones to carry all of that! Spinach is packed full of vitamin K which has shown in studies to help with osteoporosis. Spinach also encourages your body to produce osteocalcin, a protein that is essential for strong bone health.

3. Salmon

Seafood lovers rejoice! Oily fish like salmon are full of vitamin D which is needed for healthy bones. There is even a low amount of calcium in salmon which can help give your bones an extra boost of strength.

4. Prunes

Dried plums have the highest source of Vitamin K compared to other commonly eaten fruits. Studies show that prunes help improve calcium balance, reduce bone reabsorption, and enhance bone formation.

5. Onions

Make sure to keep some fresh mints on hand for this one, because sometimes being healthy can be a little stinky! Studies have found that women who eat onions have less bone loss during menopause. They also found that eating onions reduces your risk of hip fracture.

Here are some reasons why you should and some tips on how to do it.
More

One great way to keep healthy for longer is by exercising regularly. If you are taking care of an elderly loved one, working out with them can be beneficial to you both. But when you are exercising with someone who has limited mobility or issues like vertigo, it can be a little tricky. Here are some tips on how to work out with your elderly loved one.

Why Should Seniors Exercise?

It is crucial that your loved one, and you for that matter, keep exercise in the daily routine. The CDC advises that seniors get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic workouts a week or 75 minutes of vigorous activity. This means that they should be doing exercise at least 20 minutes a day if it is light or 10 minutes a day of an intense but manageable exercise.

The CDC also advises that strength training is done at least twice a week which makes sense because as we age our bodies start to become weaker. And not just in our muscles, our bones, organs, and brain as well. Working out can help keep your loved one healthy for longer as well as more mentally stable.

How Can Exercise Help Seniors?

Improves flexibility and mobility

Reduces depression and anxiety

Boosts the immune system

Reduces pain

Helps with arthritis

Can reduce symptoms of dementia

Why Should You Work Out With Your Senior?

If it is for only twenty or ten minutes a day, then why do you need to be around? Isn’t this something that they can do on their own? After all, it is all about encouraging independence right? Well, there are a couple of benefits of working out with your elderly loved one that you should consider before you throw them in the gym.

Injury Prevention

Falls can happen. But when you are around, you can help make sure they happen less. You can also make sure that they are doing exercises in the right posture to help prevent muscle injuries.

When Injuries Happen

If they fall, you can be there to help them up. You know them better than most, you can have the best idea of when you need to call an ambulance and when they just need to go home and rest. If they injure themselves during a workout, you can help them learn how not to make a mistake again.

You’re Each Other’s Motivation

How many people can say they go to the gym every day or never skip a day of lifting weights? There are some real health conscious people out there, but normal folks often have to push themselves to get to the elliptical. When you are caring you’re your senior and doing exercises with them, both of you can push each other to stay on a schedule having the motivation to keep each other healthy and accountable.

It’s Good For Your Relationship

Working out together is a great bonding experience. You are together when you are feeling good, and your endorphins are flowing and growing together. Spending this required time together can also help you make sure that your senior isn't socially isolated.

It’s Good For Your Health

You don’t have to be a senior to benefit from working out. If you commit to this exercise routine, you’ll also start to see a difference in your body, health, and mind. Why not do something healthy with the someone you love?

Exercises That Are Good For Seniors

Light Weights

Getting light weights is good for strength training in your seniors. Doing these types of workouts can help with the following:

Bone density

Upper and lower body strength

Enhanced metabolism

Improve balance and joint health

Water Aerobics

Water aerobics is so great because you can’t fall and it makes harder exercises easier for your senior. Water aerobics can help with the following:

Decrease bone and muscle loss

Increase strength and balance

Improve flexibility and joint health

Yoga

Yoga is a great way for seniors to do light amounts of exercise and still reap many rewards. Doing yoga can help your senior with the following:

Improves heart health

Great for stroke recovery

Something as simple as walking can be very beneficial to you and your loved one. Pick an easy path that doesn’t have many climbs and flat terrain and this exercise can help with the following:

What About Seniors With Limited Mobility?

Not every person is going to be in the same situation. Some seniors can get up out of their chair and get to work while others have a difficult time brushing their teeth. If you have a senior with limited mobility, remember these four tips when working out with them.

Start slow

Be consistent

Remember to stretch

Know when to stop

When You Need Extra Help With Your Senior

You may have additional obstacles that are making exercising with your loved one more difficult. There are tools you can use to make this experience more enjoyable and beneficial to both of you.

Get A Personal Trainer

You might not know all the ins and outs of a workout. You might not know the right posture to have when lifting weights to prevent injury. Having a personal trainer can help you both learn the best way to work out and can give you good exercises that can benefit you both the best.

Talk To Their Doctor

Your senior’s doctor knows their body better than anyone. They can tell you what is within their realm of possibilities. Knowing the limitations of your senior can help prevent injuries and help you have a better idea of when it is okay to push and when you need to let them take a break.

Using CBD For Your Senior’s Work Out

Taking CBD oil can also be beneficial to both you and your senior when it comes to exercise. Before you decide to implement this into your routine, make sure you let your doctor know. If you or your senior are on any medication, the CBD oil can interfere with the medicine making it less effective. Your doctor can also help to monitor you and your senior's health while you use CBD hemp oil to make sure that it is the best route for you both to take.

How Can CBD Help With Exercise For Seniors?

Energy

One reason we don’t work out is that we are so tired all of the time. Especially seniors. Often they will have an illness that causes fatigue making even the smallest tasks feel impossible to accomplish. CBD oil may be able to help with low energy by acting as a wake-promoting agent. CBD hemp oil also helps with the REM stage of the sleep cycle, helping you and your senior get a more restful sleep to have more energy the next day.

Pain

Many seniors, and maybe even you, experience frequent pain that can make working out hard to do. Even though many workouts can help relieve pain, the motivation is hard to muster up when you are already feeling it. CBD oil elevates an endocannabinoid named anandamide which binds to the CB1 receptor. This interaction helps regulate the neurological functions, one function being your sensitivity to pain. CBD hemp oil can help reduce your sensitivity to pain by making your brain send out fewer pain signals.

Motivation

It can be hard to get motivated to work out when you suffer from mental or physical illness. Depression is one of the illnesses that can hinder our motivation the most. CBD oil has shown in studies to help with depression by elevating chemicals that are normally lacking in depressed brain. CBD oil helps to modulate the limbic system as well, which is where the motivation comes from helping you to feel it naturally.

How To Use CBD For Working Out

Some of the best ways to help with working out in pain is using CBD topicals. It can help reduce the pain making it easier to accomplish exercise goals. Make sure that you still keep in mind that they need rest and to take breaks. Often, pain is our body’s signal to us that we need to chill out. So make sure that even though the pain might not be there, they still need to take it easy and take enough breaks.

For motivation and energy, taking CBD pills, tinctures, oral sprays, concentrates, e-liquid, and suppositories are all great options. These types of CBD hemp oil products can get into the internal problems that are keeping you or your loved one from working out like depression, pain, or low energy.
Are you a caretaker for a loved one who is struggling with dementia? Whether you are at the early stages or if the disease has progressed, your life probably feels like it revolves around your loved one. Making accommodations, helping them with daily tasks, all the while you are trying to balance your own life. But have you considered the different types of therapy that may make dementia easier for your loved one as well as you to manage?

What To Look For In A Therapy

There are tons of different kinds of therapies geared toward seniors. Most of them including physical activity or social interaction to keep the mind and body fresh for as long as possible. But when it comes to therapies that are geared toward dementia, researchers have noticed that the ones focused on three main domains are more successful.

The three important domains that the therapy should focus on are the maintenance of function, cognitive function, and the management of behaviors that can make comorbid emotional disorders more likely or severe. Each of these three domains has the aim to improve the wellbeing and quality of life for patients with dementia.

There are tons of therapies out there for seniors with dementia, but what would be the best one for you or your loved one? Researchers have studied and assessed different types of therapies while focusing on three important domains they believe are imperative for successful treatment: maintenance of function, cognitive function, and the management of behaviors that can make comorbid emotional disorders more likely or severe.

Important Goals Of Therapy

When looking into these therapies, it is good to have goals. Yes, you know that you need a therapy that works on emotional stability, cognitive skills, and function maintenance but what do those kinds of goals really look like?

Independence

One goal you should have in therapy for dementia is attaining or preserving some type of independence. This is important for the senior’s emotional well being as well as learning how to function properly throughout the day.

Researchers have discovered that a balance of personal care, as well as leisure and spiritual activities, are important for a high quality of life and authentic independence. The ability to do daily tasks deteriorates rather quickly with dementia, so it is important to promote independence as early on in the disease as possible.

Improving Communication

Communication may be a skill that we take for granted. Have you ever been in a situation where you couldn’t express what you wanted to? It’s absolutely frustrating. And it can be harmful when you are someone who needs assistance with their day to day life.

Therapies that help improve communication skills may be able to help preserve social function as well as help make the relationship between you and your loved one with dementia less challenging. You should also have their hearing and sight checked because these senses play such a vital role in communication. Improved communication can help reduce dependency as well as allowing the person with dementia to express the needs they do have.

ADL Skill Training

ADL stands for Activities of Daily Living. This is things like putting clothes away, making a snack, or brushing your teeth. Therapies that focus on these skills can help promote independence as well as personal care.

ADL skill training can help make daily tasks easier, making your loved one run into fewer roadblocks as they try to complete their tasks. These types of therapy generally asses people’s life abilities, impairments, and task abilities and help teach the patient how to cope and work around their limitations.

Exercise

Therapies that implement exercise can help keep your loved one with dementia healthy as well as keep them safe. Exercising therapies can help with endurance, strength, and balance to help prevent falls and improve mobility.

Types Of Therapy For Dementia

Now that you know what key elements that you are looking for, you can start to browse through different types of therapy that may be beneficial to your loved one. While there are common therapies you may have already heard about like occupational therapy, there are different options you might want to keep in mind.

Occupational Therapy

One of the most common ways to care for your elderly loved one with dementia is by using occupational therapy. This type of therapy is when an occupational therapist works with the patient to help them practice their ADL skills. Having contact with an occupational therapist can also help your senior exercise their social skills.

The occupational therapist can also work with you, the caretaker, to learn how to make things easier at home for your loved one. They can also make it less of a burden for you by helping your loved one maintain independence, helping to free you of some of the tasks you would normally have to help with.

Community Service

Doing community service is great for your loved one and your community. You would benefit as well considering there is scientific evidence that being kind is good for your health. Why not join them?

Participating in community services like organizing cans in a food drive or folding bulletins for a local group can help them have a feeling of worth and belonging in the community. Having these tasks to complete can also give them a sense of independence.

Being around others can also help with their communication skills. Being surrounded by others who are all working toward the same cause can give them a sense of community.

Doll Therapy

Some nursing homes and caretakers have found success in using a teddy bear or a lifelike baby doll for their patients with dementia. Caretakers have found that doll therapy can help decrease stress and agitation. Having this doll can also create structure and responsibility for the patient. In some cases, patients who are lacking in communication skills began to vocalize because their instinct was to hum or sing to the baby doll.

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy

Cognitive stimulation therapy is meant for people who have mild to moderate symptoms of dementia. This type of therapy is done in a group setting followed by a one on one evaluation. The patient completes sessions with themed activities that encourage a higher level of mental activity while also getting the social benefit of a group.

Reminiscence Therapy

Reminiscence therapy is when you have a therapist discuss past activities, events or experiences. This is usually while using things like photographs, old music, or home movies. Doing this can help them practice their recall ability and may be able to help improve their cognitive functions.

Reality Orientation Therapy

Reality orientation therapy is when a patient sees someone who talks about the now instead of the past. Repeating things like the time or place to help the senior with dementia to understand their surroundings and reality. This type of therapy is supposed to help jog the memory to help keep the senior more functional. Studies show it may be able to help with improving the sense of control and self-control while improving cognitive and behavioral symptoms.

Validation Therapy

Validation therapy is less focused on the tangible reality and more focused on thoughts and feelings. A therapist will listen to your senior with dementia and hear what they have to say giving empathetic feedback about their frustrations. This can help them learn to work through their emotions with different coping mechanisms. The therapist can help them identify triggers and help determine if another therapy is being too emotionally or mentally draining for them.

Music Therapy

Joining a singing choir has shown to help with social skills and improve mood. Music therapy has also shown in studies to help boost cognitive performance while reducing stress. Learning new instruments or music can also help to boost memory and memory recall. This type of therapy may be even more beneficial if the therapist includes old songs from when your loved one was younger.

Art Therapy

Art therapy has shown to help with depression, anxiety, as well as self-esteem. This type of therapy can also help your loved one with their special awareness. Doing art therapy in a group can help your loved one practice their social skills and communication while also gaining social recognition having something to be proud of.

Speech Therapy

If your loved one with dementia is unable to form cohesive sentences, speech therapy may be needed in order for them to improve their communication skills. This therapy also focuses on attention, problem-solving, and memory. Speech therapy can help preserve your loved one’s speaking skills. You can help at home, too, by doing things like making written cues around the house.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is a great way to keep your loved ones active in a safe way. Doing too much can cause harm to the body, so having someone who knows how to help the elderly exercise is very beneficial. Using physical therapy in the early stages can help your loved one preserve their independence and help prevent falls which is taking some of the burden off of you as the caregiver. As the disease progresses, physical therapy can help slow down the loss of function.

Take Your Pick!

You’ve got a good idea of what kind of therapies there are for your loved one with dementia. And you don’t have to just choose one, utilizing multiple tools is a great way to keep your loved one coherent for longer.

Have you and a loved one used one of these therapies or a different therapy for dementia? We would love to hear what worked for you in the comment section below!

Do you have an elderly loved one at home? There comes the point in time where you may need to think about getting some extra help with their care. The first two things you will probably check out on this journey is at home care and assisted living. So the question is, how do you choose?

When It’s A Good Time To Look For Help

Before you start reading brochures of facilities and background checking caregivers you let into your home, you need to know at what point is this needed for you and your family? There are a couple of red flags that can happen that may indicate taking further steps in caring for your elderly loved one.

Your loved one is becoming angry, violent, or mean taking an emotional toll on the family

It is difficult for your loved one to perform daily tasks

What your loved one’s needs are exceeding your physical and mental abilities

Their condition is beginning to disrupt family routines

Your loved one is beginning to wander

You and your family are experiencing symptoms of burnout like avoidance behaviors, hypervigilance, or intrusive thoughts

Assisted Living Or Stay At Home Care?

If you nodded your head a couple of times while reading those red flags, now it comes down to which option would be better for you senior? Both options do similar things, but each has their own pros and cons to consider.

Pros Of Home Care

At home care is when you get a qualified caretaker to come to your home to help with daily tasks as well as helping with medication. There are a couple of good reasons to choose this option.

They Get To Stay At Home

There is something about the comfort of our own home that makes life easier. Some elderly patients can get confused and scared when they wake up in an unfamiliar place, and this can help them avoid that fear.

It Can Be Cheaper

If your loved one doesn’t need 24-hour care, this option could be cheaper. If they are able to perform many tasks but need assistance in just a few areas, you can come up with a plan that fits you and your loved one best to meet the most reasonable price.

Allows Them To Stay With Family Members Who Don’t Need The Same Care

This is similar to being able to stay in your own environment, but being able to stay with family is a big enough benefit to have its own section. For couples, this is a great option for when one spouse needs care and the other doesn’t. Being around family and people who love them can also be a great benefit to your elderly loved one’s mental health.

Maintain Independence

While many assisted living centers strive to give their residents independence, there is more opportunity to exercise this independence at home. Having an at-home caregiver can give you and your elderly loved one more control over the routine to make sure to maintain this independence.

You Get Choices

When you look for a caregiver, you get to choose who takes care of you. In an assisted living center, you have a full faculty that you don’t have much control over. Being able to choose who takes care of your loved one gives you the opportunity to have more control over positive outcomes. You can also become comfortable with this person like they are family because you see them on such a regular basis.

You Can Be Picky About Your Medication

If your loved one is taking medication, they have more control at home at what they can and cannot take. Especially in this time where many professionals are still uneducated about the impact of medical marijuana, having an at-home caregiver can give you and your family more leeway to medicate the way you see most beneficial.

Cons Of At Home Care

May Be Intrusive

If your family doesn’t like house guests, this can become suffocating. Having someone in the home performing daily tasks for your loved one and being close and intimate with the family may become overbearing for you and your family.

Can Be Costly

If your loved one needs 24-hour care, it can be a bit more expensive than signing up for assisted living. Especially if they need to perform specialized care, stay at home care might not be the best option for your wallet.

Requires Continual Family Involvement

What if your caregiver needs to go on vacation or gets sick? You need to have a backup plan and ways to get around the routine shifting. This could be stepping in while they are away or finding a new caregiver that you feel comfortable with coming into your home and taking care of someone you love.

Can Lead To Social Isolation

At home care can provide a safe bubble that your loved one chooses not to leave. They can find themselves staying in and having their caregiver going out to pick things up for them causing their social life to die out slowly.

You May Need To Modify Your House

If your loved one has recently become wheelchair bound or needs certain attachments added like rails, having them stay with you means you need to get started on some construction. For tips on how to help prevent falls in your home, check out this article.

Pros And Cons OF Assisted Living

Assisted living is a place where your loved one can go to have a trained staff help them with daily activities as well as help them keep track of taking medication. Every assisted living center has their own lists of pros and cons because they are all different, but there are some general similarities to think about when making this decision.

Pros Of Assisted Living

Can Bring Spouse Along

Some assisted living centers allow for seniors to live alone or with their spouse. If their spouse also needs care, this is a great option because they can both receive it in the same building. If the spouse doesn’t need intensive care, they can still live in the facility and utilize what the center has to offer when they need it.

Be A Part Of A large Community

Seniors in assisted living programs are surrounded by people who knew where they were during big events, remember the days of walking through snow uphill both ways to school, and can complain along with their friends about how their dentures don’t fit. Having a community that you can relate to can help with social skills as well as keep seniors from becoming isolated.

Helps Keep Seniors Mobile, Active, And Safe

Many assisted living centers have fun programs for seniors to participate in that keep them active without pushing their limits. They also have activities that help with cognitive skills like with art or music. And all of this is done in a safe environment.

24-Hour Support

In the middle of the night, your senior has the ability to have someone help them go to the bathroom or help them if they fall. One great thing about assisted living centers is that your elderly loved one can have care around the clock. And it is also often more affordable for people who need 24-hour care to go to assisted living centers as opposed to at-home care.

Less Burden On The Family

The assisted living center takes care of schedules, caregivers, medicine, and all of the things that you and your family would have to take care of at home. This gives you the opportunity to instead focus on building and maintaining a healthy relationship with your loved one.

Can Easily Increase Care

If your loved one needs more than just someone cutting up their veggies, it is very simple to increase the amount of care they need. The assisted living center can also help you determine whether or not the next best step is to move your loved one into a nursing home or not which offers a lot more support.

Cons Of Assisted Living Centers

May Have To Share A Room

Some assisted living centers give patients an entire room to themselves equipped with their own bathroom and kitchen. Others may have your loved one sharing a room with someone else. Your loved one may hate this idea, but luckily this isn’t with every facility.

Less Privacy And Independence

Assisted living centers try to give their community as much independence as they can offering transportation and giving the residents the ability to make their own decisions and do their own thing. However, living in this place can take away some independence from people who aren’t used to living somewhere that isn’t their own home.

One On One Care Is Less Consistent

With assisted living centers, you have an entire staff that is taking care of your loved one. Like most places of employment, some people are better at their jobs than others. This can cause strain when the level of care isn’t as consistent as your loved one would prefer.

Not Everyone Enjoys A Group Environment

Extroverts may thrive in this environment, but people who are drained by others may find that this isn’t the right fit. While of course they can stay in their room and have the option to see others and to stay alone, they may find the number of people in the building and common areas to be overwhelming.

You Can Be Kicked Out

When you are getting care at home, you can’t get kicked out. Yes, a caregiver can leave, but you can always just find a new one from the comfort of your own home. In an assisted living center, you can be removed for various reasons and with very little notice.

Seniors are at a point in their life where they have a medicine cabinet full of pills to help manage the everyday problems that they face. But medicine alone isn’t the only answer, which is why many of the elderly utilize physical therapy and mental health counseling.

While these conventional therapies are very effective, some people may find that unique therapies work better instead of or in tandem with the original forms of therapy. One thing that’s so great about unique therapies is that some of them can be a lot of fun!

Art Therapy

Art therapy is one of the fun therapies. If therapy isn’t appealing enough, art therapy might be. While not everyone enjoys creating, many people can benefit from what art therapy has to offer.

Studies have shown that people who are encouraged to participate in art therapy and have dementia show an increase in enjoyment which transfers over to other aspects of their life. Ar therapy has shown that it can help reduce stress and also help with psychological resilience, improving our senior's ability to handle the troubles that come with everyday life.

Art therapy has also shown to help raise self-esteem in elderly patients. Not everyone knows how talented they are. Some seniors have gone to an art therapy session and come out realizing that they have a new favorite hobby and they are actually good at it. This type of therapy also leaves the person with a sense of accomplishment, which can help people who are suffering from mental health issues like depression.

Music Therapy

Music therapy can consist of making music or listening to it. Making music can help with cognitive performance, helping seniors strengthen their minds. Learning music can help with motor function and physical awareness as well. But being a part of the music is just half of it, you can also have a lot of benefit from listening as well.

It's not just being a part of the music, just listening to the music has shown to help people who have serious illnesses. Patients with Parkinson’s found that music therapy helped with sensory loss, depression, and motor scores. It even showed to help with gait and freezing associated with Parkinson’s.

Patients with anxiety and pain also found a reduction in their symptoms while listening to music. But not just any music! Music therapy requires a professional who studies music theory as well as psychology and how the two can work together. If you want to try out music therapy, find a specialist who can help find the right type of therapy that focuses on certain symptoms.

Light Therapy

Light therapy sounds like something from a science fiction novel, but we also may have never expected to get air touch technology. Light therapy is when they use ultraviolet lights to interact with the body and has shown to help with mental health.

While the majority of studies with light therapy have been geared to seasonal depression, scientists believe that this form of therapy may be beneficial in two other ways. Studies have shown that this form of therapy may also be able to help with general depression as well as help people with sleep disorders.

Researchers believe that light therapy can help by changing the melatonin release in the body. But it is important that you don’t just set up UV rays at home and have a licensed professional help you. If you do these types of therapies at night, it can cause insomnia or hyperactivity. Without the help of a professional, you also run the risk of injuring eyes or other consequences to UV exposure.

Pet Therapy

If you or your elderly loved one have pet allergies, this type of therapy might be a bit tricky. Though there are breeds of certain animals that are less likely to flare up allergies, this may not be the therapy for everyone.

Pet therapy is a guided interaction between a person and a trained animal. Seniors can greatly benefit from animals, and having a guided therapy session with them has a long list of benefits. Just being around an animal can make people feel better, helping with depression and anxiety. Learning how to interact with the animal can help with social skills and interacting with them physically can help with physical health. Having these pets around is also great for lonely seniors, helping them find companionship with a being that is only able to give out unconditional love.

Aromatherapy

Stress doesn’t care how old you are, it still likes to creep in and mess your life up. With seniors, having anxiety issues can cause a myriad of health issues. Many illnesses that seniors have to deal with can exacerbate stressful events which can turn into developed anxiety disorders. If stress is the name of the game, aromatherapy may be a part of the solution.

Aromatherapy is when you use oils for medicinal benefit. This can include getting a massage with the oils or just breathing in the aromas. When using them in a massage, there are antioxidant, antimicrobial, and pharmacologic effects on various tissues. When using them in a bath, diffuser, or another way to inhale the aroma, it may be able to help with pain, sleep, stress, anxiety, and sleep issues.

Dance Or Movement Therapy

Dance or movement therapy is a great physical therapy for seniors, focusing on how to help them with their individual issues more so than how to dance. This helps with strength building and communication skills considering that body language is such a powerful communication tool.

Dance or movement therapy in group settings is great for seniors who feel that they don’t get enough socialization in their day to day life. And when they complete these exercises, it gives them a sense of accomplishment.

Aquatic Therapy

Not everyone in their later years has a body that allows for a lot of movement. Exercising gets harder as the arthritis kicks in, bones become more brittle, and chronic pain becomes a regular nuisance. If this sounds familiar, aquatic therapy might be the right solution to getting you or your elderly loved one’s blood pumping.

Aquatic therapy is when you do physical exercise in water. It helps to ease the pressure on joints and allows for people who normally have problems with movement participate in physical activity. Aquatic therapy improves strength from water resistance, eases muscle pain, has no risk of harmful falls, and has a decrease in pain sensitivity when the water is warm and buoyant.

Integrating CBD Into Unique Therapies

While these therapies have shown to benefit, they can still be difficult to participate in when people are struggling with mental and physical health. This is why it is almost always advised to utilize medications alongside going to therapy.

Many seniors have a medicine cabinet full of pills that they are instructed to take, all coming with their own unique side-effects. Because CBD has shown that it has the ability to help with a broad range of symptoms and has a more attractive side-effect profile, many elderly patients are turning to CBD instead.

CBD And Pain

People can have the desire to go out and do therapies that involve physical activity, but the pain might be too much to bear. When you have arthritis, painting or sculpting becomes very challenging and painful making the art therapy less effective. Good news is that CBD oil has shown in studies that it may be able to help.

Whether it is using topicals directly on the hurting area or taking CBD in a pill, CBD elevates an endocannabinoid called anandamide which has shown to be beneficial in people who experience chronic pain. Anandamide binds to the CB1 receptor, which is in control of the neurological functions which includes your sensitivity to pain.

CBD also elevates the endocannabinoid 2-AG which binds to the CB2 receptor. This interaction helps mediate your immune functions. For people who are experiencing pain because of inflammation, CBD oil may be able to help reduce the inflammation effectively reducing the pain as well.

CBD And Depression

When you are depressed, you don’t care about making yourself feel better. Instead, you can find yourself wallowing in your own self-pity hating the world. You can get in this cycle of I feel miserable, I should do something about it, but I feel too miserable. Studies show CBD may be able to help with depression and do so quickly.

Studies show that when rodent models were given CBD, in just thirty minutes they began to experience a chemical change. Chemicals that are normally lower in depressed brains began to rise. The endocannabinoid anandamide also gives you a feeling of being uplifted, like a runner’s high, which can help get the ball rolling on self-care.

CBD With Essential Oils

If you want to try aromatherapy mixed with CBD, we carry CBD bath salts that have essential oils that can help you relax in the tub. Our topicals also contain essential oils, helping to further the pain relief that is associated with CBD hemp oil.

Have you participated in any unique therapies and they worked for you? We would love to hear about it in the comment section below!

Studies suggest that a rich social life may be able to decrease the risk of developing dementia, possibly because of the intellectual and social stimulation causing neuroprotective effects. Some activities may even help slow down the development, helping patients hold onto their mental health for longer.

When spending time with your loved one who is at high risk for developing dementia or has already started to develop it, to help, you'll want to partake in activities that are mentally stimulating but not overwhelming. These types of activities can help them feel better by giving their brain a little boost.

Before diving into these activities, you need to remember what your loved one is capable of and be patient with them. Try not to set up any activities that they would have a difficult time doing, because if they fail, it could make their mental state even worse.

3 Activities To Do With Your Loved Ones With Dementia

1. Reminiscing

This is an easy one, and it helps make the activity become all about your loved one. Singing songs from the past can help stir up memories and give them an emotional connection to something that they have really missed. You can watch old home videos to help trigger memories and remind them of the loving family that they have. Even cooking their favorite meal can help because smell and taste are such strong magnets for memories. Contributing to the meal can also give them a sense of accomplishment.

2. Arts And Crafts

Seniors can absolutely benefit from art therapy, and it is a fun activity that can include you! Arts and crafts can help stimulate their creativity, and art therapy is great for depression which many people with dementia struggle with. Puzzles can help them organize, and problem solve gently, while also being another activity that gives them a feeling of accomplishment when they are finished.

3. Go Outdoors

One great thing walking around in nature may be able to do is help reduce depression, which is a good start to helping your loved one with dementia. Going on short walks can get their muscles moving and their blood pumping which is excellent for the body and mind, especially in the elderly to help with dementia. You can even help them tend a garden to help them feel accomplished for getting a task finished while they soak up the sun’s vitamin D which can also help them with their depression.

Just Take The Time

You can help your loved one; you just have to take the time to do it. Find out what benefits them the most and what makes them the happiest. Your loved one may also benefit from taking CBD for their dementia as well. When it comes to the people we love, we will do anything to keep them around for longer and to make their time here more comfortable and filled with joy. Talk to your doctor about other ways you can help, including inquiring about CBD oil.

If you have an elderly parent at home, one of the best things you can do for them is to make sure that your home is safe. When we fall as kids, we heal quickly and just have crazy stories to tell the rest of our lives. But as we get older, the healing process slows down, and we break a lot easier. Here are some ways that you can help prevent falling at home with your elderly parents.

Keep It Clean

If you have children, make sure to help them keep a habit of picking up their toys. Clothes on the floor should go in hampers, and any random items around the house should be kept put away. Be sure to pay close attention to areas that aren’t big open spaces like hallways, stairs, and doorways because the smaller space they have to walk, the easier it will be to trip over things on the floor.

Make Repairs

Did your cat pull up your carpet and you just haven’t gotten around to making repairs? Now is the time to do it. Floorboards that are sticking up or broken steps to get into the front door can all contribute to a nasty fall.

Remove Items

Fancy rugs look nice, but if they are easily flipped over in the corners or curled up, they can create a hazard. Loose chords from your electronics in walkways is also a bad idea, but using tape to cover these areas or making rugs stick to the ground can prove to be a safer alternative.

Getting Handy

Get your wrench out because you want your house full of rails. On the stairs, if they aren’t already, in the bathtub and shower, in front of or beside the toilet, and even in their bedroom or kitchen. Railways make it easier to maneuver around the house, so installing them in areas they frequent most may be able to help prevent falls.

Good Lighting

Good lighting will make you feel better, and it makes it easier to see where you are going when your sight isn’t as good as it used to be. In the bedroom, making sure that the light near the bed is easy to reach can make it easier for them when they need to get up in the middle of the night. At the front door, if they come home late for any reason, make sure the front area is well lit. Having the area well lit can help your elderly loved ones see a hazard before it’s too late.

Make Areas Non-Slip

Places like in the bathtub or shower, in front of the toilet, and in front of any sinks are more likely to be fall hazards than on the carpet in front of the TV. Anywhere that slipping might be an issue, you should put a rubber matt or decal to help keep your loved ones from falling.

First Floor VIP

If you are moving into a house to bring in your parents, try to find one that can give them a room on the first floor. Eliminating stairs entirely can be a huge help. This can also help because they may be fatigued or tired and find that they avoid going to their room because it is so much work.

Reorganize

When it is time to bake for the holidays, try moving all of the kitchen supplies that they would use in places that are easier to reach. If they use electronic can openers, coffee pots, or toasters, try leaving them on the counter for them or, if you need to put them away, put them in cabinets that make them within arms reach. Towels, toilet paper, books, and other things that they may need throughout the day should be put away in places that they won't need a step stool and they won't need to get too far down to the ground to retrieve.

Additional Tips

If you ever have to leave your loved one alone, consider getting something that can call you or paramedics with the push of a button, so they aren’t left alone in your house for hours laying on the ground. You can also talk to them, ask them what you can do to make their lives more comfortable as you take care of them. If they have fallen and are in pain, using CBD topicals on the areas that hurt may be able to help soothe them. You took on a big responsibility, and it can become tiresome at times, but this is a very selfless and fantastic thing you are doing for your elderly parents.

Our older generation is one that should be cherished and nurtured. They are coming to a point in their life where their health is on the decline both mentally and physically. There are many different ways to help them through this aging process, and studies suggest that having a pet companion can benefit the elderly’s health.

A review on 69 original studies regarding human-animal interactions has shown the positive effect of having a pet on the body and mind. The social interaction between human and animal has demonstrated to elicit beneficial chemical reactions that can improve a person’s quality of life. Here are some ways that the elderly can benefit from having a pet companion.

Anti-Anxiety

A well-trained animal can have a calming effect on the owner helping to reduce anxiety. While training a puppy to not puddle on the floor can be stressful, having a low maintenance well-trained animal can prove to be beneficial.

In the study, they found that cortisol, norepinephrine, and epinephrine levels were changed when the subject had an animal. These chemicals are closely related to the feeling of anxiety and stress, suggesting that a furry companion may be able to help lower stress levels.

Blood Pressure

Does your elderly loved one have an issue with high blood pressure? Get them a pooch! A study researching children and their levels of blood pressure showed that when a dog was in the room, their blood pressure was lower. Another study researching undergraduates showed that when the subjects were petting their own dog, their blood pressure was lower. While a healthy diet and exercise are also a great way to reduce high blood pressure, having a friendly pet around can help as well.

Aggression

Does your loved one have issues with aggression and irritability? Taking care of issues like pain, hunger, and loneliness can help with how they act outward. Adding an animal to the room can possibly give you an even better effect. A study also shows that having an animal in the room can lower aggression. Scientists firmly believe that interacting with animals has an impact on our social skills.

Exercise

When you loved one has a pet that needs to be walked, this can give them that added motivation to get moving. Even if it is only a twenty-minute walk a day, this exercising routine can help with their weight, cardiovascular issues, building strength, and quality of life.

Quality Of Life

If your loved one sits in their room all day with nothing to do, it can detach them from reality. While pets aren’t the only way to help them re-engage with the world, they are definitely a viable tool. By having a creature to nurture, pet, feed, and walk they are gaining a responsibility that could help with their self-esteem. These animals also show an immense amount of unconditional love that your loved one may be craving.

How To Choose The Right Assisted Living Center

If you are thinking about putting your loved one in an assisted living center, consider one that allows pets. There are even some homes that require pet interaction because they see the benefits of the ownership.

If the living center accepts pets, it is also a good idea to find one that can help your loved one take care of this pet. Some seniors may forget to feed or medicate their animal causing them to neglect their furry companion accidentally. It is always a good idea to make sure they have someone helping them to ensure the pet stays as happy and healthy as they are.

As we grow older, we become less active, cognitive, and healthy which can bring problems of malnutrition. 16% of community-dwelling seniors in America are eating under 1,000 calories a day. Having an unhealthy diet not only picks away at your weight, but it also can make physical and mental illnesses more severe. Many seniors are turning to CBD to help.

Cannabidiol (CBD) might acts as a regulator, giving it an opportunity to be a very effective medication. Your endocannabinoid system is in charge of your body’s homeostasis, and CBD interacts with this system. For individuals who have issues with eating, CBD may help regulate the appetite by elevating an endocannabinoid called anandamide.

Why Are Seniors Malnourished?

Pain

If someone has a difficult time walking into the kitchen without hurting, preparing a meal becomes a painful chore. Going to the store is also thought of as something that is exhausting, and seniors can begin to put this off until there is absolutely no food in the house. Even then, they may still wait. Pain can also cause people to stop being active, which makes their metabolism slow down causing malnutrition.

Mental Illness

Dementia, anxiety, and depression are common in seniors, and they also can make an individual's appetite almost nonexistent. It’s not that they don’t have food or can’t prepare it, it’s just that nothing is appetizing enough to drive them to eat.

How Can CBD Oil Help?

Pain

CBD may help with many physical ailments that are common among seniors like arthritis, bone loss, muscle pains, and old injuries. It may help reduce inflammation that might be causing pain by elevating an endocannabinoid called 2-AG which primarily binds to the CB2 receptor. How it works is the endocannabinoid travels backward through the synapse and tells the receptor to stop sending out so many attack cells which reduce the inflammation.

If inflammation isn’t the cause of the pain, CBD oil has shown it may be able to help alter the brain's perception of pain. Cannabidiol also elevates an endocannabinoid called anandamide, which mainly binds to the CB1 receptor which is in charge of mediating the neurological functions, which includes pain sensitivity. Anandamide travels backward toward the CB1 receptor and helps to calm down the activity in the brain that is causing an individual to feel pain.

Mental Illness

The endocannabinoid anandamide has shown it may do more than just help with pain; it might also be a mood stabilizer. In a clinical study involving schizophrenic patients, they report that the use of CBD helped with psychotic effects in part by mood regulation.

Cannabidiol has also shown promising effects toward combatting anxiety. Through anandamide's interactions with receptors involved with the fear response like serotonin and TRP, research suggests that it can help alleviate anxiety.

Anandamide and the CB1 cannabinoid receptor also help to regulate the appetite because it is a part of the neurological system. Hemp oil won't cause the munchies like THC does, but it can make eating easier to do more subtly. In a study with rodent models, subjects induced with anandamide were eating up to 44% more food.

How To Take CBD To Boost Your Appetite

CBD tinctures work quickly, which means that if someone needs their appetite to kick in now, taking a few drops from the tincture may help them achieve that goal. Taking CBD pills or edibles might also help because it lasts for longer than the tincture does, making it to where dosing throughout the day isn’t as necessary.
If you or a loved one are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, you know how harrowing the adventure can be. This illness steals your memories and changes the way you behave and act. Many pharmaceuticals can help with some of the symptoms, but sometimes they don’t work and the side effects can be so risky for people of old age. Many people are turning to medical cannabis to help with their symptoms and even help slow down the progression of the disease.

1. Anti-Inflammatory

Patients with Alzheimer’s have a build up of beta-amyloid plaque that surrounds their neurons and instead of being proteins that are broken down, they form a hard plaque that your body can’t get rid of. With this plaque surrounding neurons, it causes cognitive impairments that are synonymous with Alzheimer’s like memory loss or loss of speech.

Research indicates that the presence of this plaque activates immune cells called microglia and go into attack mode to get rid of it. However, the plaque is so strong that the immune cells won’t make any headway, making them stick around and cause long-term inflammation. Using cannabidiol can help reduce the activity of microglial cells which in turn can reduce the damage done to the brain by inflammation.

2. Slowing Down The Progression

Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease which means that it gets worse and more damaging over time. The accumulation of beta-amyloid creates a toxic environment for cells, encouraging them to die off. Altered glucose metabolism has also shown to be a cause of not only diabetes but Alzheimer’s as well reducing the amount of fuel transferred to cells.

Cannabidiol can help protect the brain, fighting against the beta-amyloid toxicity. These neuroprotective properties can help slow down the progression of the disease. CBD can also regulate the glucose uptake, helping to keep the brain fueling itself with energy.

3. Social Recognition

One of the cognitive impairments that is so common with Alzheimer’s and dementia is social recognition deficit. This is when the individual has a hard time remembering faces and names of people they may have known for years. As a relative of someone with this disease, it can be one of the most heartbreaking things to watch as they forget who their loved ones are.

Studies have shown the CBD treatments may be able to help with social recognition deficits. Not only does CBD help with the damage done by beta-amyloid toxicity and oxidative stress, but researchers have also discovered more treatment options through other courses of interactions available for the cannabinoid. They found that CBD made an impact on neuroinflammation, cholesterol, and dietary phytosterol linking to improved social recognition.

4. Depression

Depression is comorbid with many illnesses and diseases and is often forgotten or put on the back burner while the primary disease is treated. This can make matters worse for any disease making it harder to help yourself treat the illness. People who are depressed often don’t take their medicine and don’t do activities that exercise their mind or body which can make illnesses worse.

Cannabidiol can help with depression in two ways. The first is by helping to reduce inflammation in the brain that can be causing depression. For a long time, we thought depression as just a chemical imbalance, which is true, but there is so much more to the story. Depression may be linked to inflammation in parts of the brain causing these chemical imbalances. CBD can help reduce this inflammation so the brain can begin to function normally again.

CBD also gives the user a boosted mood. It isn’t a high like you would get off of caffeine, alcohol, or THC, but more of a natural high you get like after a good workout or run. By elevating the endocannabinoid anandamide, CBD can make the user feel more uplifted, making day to day activities easier to accomplish.

5. Stimulating Cell Growth

A big part of Alzheimer’s is cell death in the brain. The toxicity from the beta-amyloid can have a lasting impact on neurons resulting in death. The lack of nutrients from the low glucose levels can also contribute to cell death. The connections between neurons break down, and parts of the brain begin to shrink.

Cannabidiol has the ability to help regenerate cells through a process called neurogenesis. It doesn’t make new cells out of nowhere, but it stimulates the process that the brain already uses. Usually, cells die off like our skin cells. Our brain cells are designed to live for years, which means they have to be able to repair themselves. CBD oil can stimulate this process, helping to slow down the cell death repercussions of this disease.

If you or your loved one are suffering from Alzheimer's, stop by our shop and check ou the wide variety of products we have available for you to choose from. Be sure to talk with your doctor to make sure CBD doesn’t interact with any medications you are currently on.

Do you have someone in your home who is starting to show signs of dementia? You may have noticed how quickly they get frustrated and how hard normal activities have become. You can help by making your house more dementia friendly to make day to day life a little more comfortable for them.

1. Your Windows

CBD oil isn’t the only thing that helps regulate your body, sunlight does, too! Using natural light throughout the day can help lift the spirits of your loved one and help them remain more active. Make sure that there is enough light coming in because many people with dementia can have a loss of vision which makes the room darker than it actually is. When it’s dark out, close the curtains to avoid any reflection scares, and it can also help indicate that it is night time. This routine can help them get into a comfortable sleeping schedule, as well.

2. Indoor Lighting

Try to have your rooms well lit and get rid of as many shadows as possible. The dark spots can make your loved one uncomfortable which over time can become an unsettling panic. Make sure to have the areas where they are doing activities well lit like on a desk or table, so they don’t have the added frustration of visibility impairments when trying to complete tasks.

3. Make Lists

Next to your house phone, make a list of names and numbers for your loved one to use. You can even go a step further and add pictures so you can eliminate as much confusion as possible. If they make their own breakfast drink like coffee or tea, put a list of ingredients so they know what recipe will give them the drink they are so used to. Anytime there are steps involved, having a list nearby is sure to help.

4. Make A Calendar

Routine is essential when caring for someone with dementia. Make a calendar or activity board for your loved one that you both can go over every day. This can help them be prepared for what is to come during the day as well as remind them in case they forget. Doing this daily can help build the structure their mind needs to cope with this degenerative disease.

5. Label Everything

Putting labels on cabinets and drawers can reduce the frustration of looking through several cabinets before they find what they are looking for. You can even make a key for them to keep knowing what room an item would be in. If you aren’t a very organized person, now is a great time to start!

6. Everything Has Its Place

If you are the type of person to lose your keys constantly, now is the time to learn some new organization techniques. Having a specific place for each item can help you and your loved one keep track of things. Having the remotes to the TVs out on the coffee table in the same place each time or having a bowl next to the front door for your keys can help prevent you from wasting your time on a scavenger hunt.

Cannabis For Nursing Homes

With medical cannabis becoming more accepted throughout the country, should nursing homes jump on board?
More

Nursing homes are starting to pick up on the trend and are letting their seniors use cannabis. Because CBD oil has the healing benefits of cannabis without the high, some nursing homes are allowing their residents to find late-in-life relief through the cannabis plant. Unfortunately, not every nursing home is on board. Why is it so important that nursing homes offer cannabis oil as an alternative to their community?

Reducing The Number Of Pills

Many seniors are turning to cannabis oil because it helps with several ailments instead of just one. It can be overwhelming having to take multiple pills at multiple times a day, especially if you are suffering from a disorder or disease that is deteriorating your memory. With nursing care costs on the rise, nursing homes could benefit by opting to use CBD oil instead of prescription medications. They too could save money on the mass amounts of pills they have to buy to keep their community healthy.

Seniors Are Becoming Addicted To Pain Killers

Out of all of the patients on Medicare, almost a third were prescribed opiates for their pain in 2015. That year, 2.7 million Americans over the age of 50 were reportedly abusing their painkillers. In the past twenty years, hospitalization due to opioid abuse has quintupled for seniors over the age of 65. Though the opioid epidemic has been targeting younger addicts who obtain the drug illegally, this epidemic has also found its way into our nursing homes.

People Using Opiates Prefer Cannabis

A study conducted on 2,897 participants shows that the majority of people using opioids either can reduce how many painkillers they take with cannabis or prefer to use cannabis by itself to treat their pain.

No Overdose And Less Risk

When taking prescription pills, there is a chance of overdosing, and many of the side-effects can turn out to be worse than what the medication is trying to treat. Medical cannabis is such a viable option because it has no reported lethal overdose and instead of creating side effects, it gets down to the illness and its specific symptoms.

Using medical cannabis in assisted living centers or nursing homes could change the way that these facilities are caring for their residents. It makes sense that they would want these last few years of their lives to harbor less pain. CBD oil can help with a multitude of illnesses without making the user high, making it an excellent option for the elderly. When it comes to your time, you’d want access to a safer alternative, too, right?

More than 65 million people in the United States are taking care of a loved one, offering this “free” service that can take a toll on their mental and physical health. By taking the right precautions to care for yourself as well as your loved one, you can avoid caregiver’s burn out.

Warning Signs Of Caregiver’s Burnout

Withdrawing from friends and family

Losing interesting in activities you used to enjoy

Feeling irritable, depressed, and hopeless

Change in weight

Getting sick more often

Change in sleep pattern

Having thoughts of harming yourself or the one you’re caring for

1. Ask For Help

You might feel like all of the weight has fallen on you, but you shouldn’t be doing this alone. If you have siblings or other family members who are close by, they need to step up. Even if it’s just bringing a meal you don’t have to cook, or sending money so you can hire someone to take over for a day, your family needs to do this together. Not just you.

2. Set Reasonable Goals

Some diseases will get worse over time, and you need to prepare yourself for that. Set goals that both you and your loved one can achieve so you can feel a sense of accomplishment. Feeling like you’re not making any progress can make you feel hopeless, but remember that small victories are victories nonetheless. Even if it’s just getting them to go for a short walk with you or eating their entire meal, it will feel good that you both had such a successful day together.

2. Know Your Limits

You can’t expect to do this job all day every day. If you find yourself feeling guilty for wanting some free time, you shouldn’t. You deserve to take care of yourself; otherwise, how would you be able to care for them? Neglecting your needs for someone else’s can cause a build-up of resentment, which can lead to a toxic relationship.

3. Join A Support Group

Talking with others who are going through the same thing as you can help you hash out any feelings you might be keeping down. The sense of being surrounded by people who understand you can make the job a lot easier. You might even find someone who has found a better or easier way to do something for their loved one and themselves.

4. Read Up

The more you know about their condition, the better you can care for them. It can get frustrating when nothing is working but tailoring the day and activities to their specific illness can make it more effective for the both of you.

Are you a caregiver who has gone through caregiver’s burnout? How did you overcome your struggles? We’d love to hear all about it in the comment section below!

31 million adults over the age of 50 don’t exercise regularly in America. Which is unfortunate because this is the time you need it most. Physical activity can help with many of the conditions that keep people from exercising and help prolong your life. Many seniors are turning to CBD oil to help them get past their barriers. Cannabidiol (CBD) can help with the pain and mental health that may be turning seniors away from a healthy routine.

What Is CBD?

Cannabidiol is a chemical from the cannabis sativa plant that has healing benefits without the high. By interacting with our endocannabinoid system, CBD has access to our immune system, skeletal system, cardiovascular system, neurological system, and more. CBD seems like a miracle drug because of how much ground it covers, though we know it is just incredibly efficient.

What Is The Endocannabinoid System

When you have a fever, or you get angry but cool down, that is your endocannabinoid system at work. Through a process called homeostasis, the endocannabinoid system helps regulate your body to keep you running normally.

Parts Of The Endocannabinoid System

Endocannabinoids

Did you know that our brain makes chemicals that are similar to the ones found in cannabis? While the chemicals from the plant are called cannabinoids, the ones our brains make are called endocannabinoids. These chemicals are what help mediate conversation through the cells in your body through a process called retrograde signaling.

When you have a stimulated neuron from something like pain or anxiety, it can start to fire off that message too much and overstimulate the receiving neuron. The endocannabinoids travel backward from the receiving cell to the sending cell and control what the sending neurons are pushing out. This is why when you cut yourself really bad, you don’t feel it right away. Your body is flushing your system with feel-good neurotransmitters, endorphins, and endocannabinoids so that you don’t feel that pain right away. Once it wears off, you notice that it hurts much more after the fact.

Metabolic Enzymes

Where to the endocannabinoids come from? They are synthesized by metabolic enzymes of course! These proteins make the endocannabinoids that we need on demand to send them out to do their job. This isn’t their only function, though. Metabolic enzymes also clean up all the debris left lying around in your brain from used chemicals, and also helps promote a healthy life cycle with your cells.

Cannabinoid Receptors

Without these, your endocannabinoids would be useless. For those chemicals to work, they have to bind to something. Each endocannabinoid is like a key and can’t fit into just any receptor, but they fit perfectly with cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2.

The two endocannabinoids we know of today are anandamide and 2-AG. Anandamide binds to the CB1 receptor which helps to regulate your mood, sleep cycle, appetite, and sensitivity to pain. What’s interesting about anandamide is that it is so similar to THC, that THC can act as the key to the receptors lock. This is why when you smoke THC cannabis, you can feel euphoric, drowsy, hungry, and pain isn’t as severe. 2-AG binds to the CB2 receptor which is in charge of making sure our immune system is functional.

How Does CBD Work?

Cannabidiol doesn’t get you high because it doesn’t directly bind to the cannabinoid receptors like THC does. Instead, it stimulates these receptors by elevating the levels of endocannabinoids. It also opens up ion channels and pathways making your brain work at a higher capacity and inhibits chemicals that aren’t needed. In short, cannabidiol is a regulator for your body’s regulator.

Why Aren’t Seniors Exercising?

If it is so essential for your health, why are people who experience more health issues not exercising? Well, that’s the answer right there. Seniors aren’t coming out to play because they are in pain, exhausted, and stressed out like the rest of us but on a higher volume. But if they only knew about CBD and what it could do, they would be doing laps around you at the gym.

Seniors Are Tired

It’s not easy being a part of the elderly community. Your body isn’t as strong as it once was and it takes more energy to move. This can make seniors feel like working out is just going to make them worse, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

When you take CBD orally like with our Flavored CBD Oral Spray before a workout, you can feel like your body has more energy. What it can do is help your body use the power you already have more efficiently through a process called fat browning.

When you eat food, your body turns that food into energy that can be stored or burned. The stored fat, which is the most common, is the white fat that many people feel the need to get rid of. White fat is necessary for your health, but too much of it can cause health problems. When your body requires energy, it will brown that fat so that it can be burned. CBD helps that process along, giving you a natural boost of energy.

They Are In Pain

Getting old hurts! You don’t have to be a senior to know that one. One main reason seniors aren’t getting out and exercising is that it hurts too much. That problem can be helped by taking CBD.

When you are in pain, your brain is making that sensation happen. The reason opiates are so effective is because they block pain receptors which make the pain nonexistent. The only problem with opioids is that they are addictive and after long-term use they can begin to destroy your body, which is why people are choosing CBD instead.

The anandamide chemical that binds to your CB1 receptors helps reduce your sensitivity to pain. By taking CBD, you are elevating that chemical making it more efficient. If you have pain in targeted areas, products like the CBD Icy Hot Gel Relief can help treat the pain on contact. If your pain is all over, products like the CBD Pain Relieving Oral Spray can give your relief all over.

Seniors Are Depressed

Many people can go their whole lives not knowing what depression feels like; then it hits them like a ton of sad bricks once they’ve gotten older. Depression isn't just feeling sad; it's not able to feel happy because your brain won't let you. This makes people unmotivated, exhausted, and not too concerned with self-care.

It’s up for debate what really causes depression, though there are two very sound theories. The first, which most people know, is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Which would make sense, right? But researchers wanted to dig even further and have come across evidence that suggests depression may be a product of inflammation in the brain.

If it’s inflammation, CBD has got that covered. Because of CBD’s relationship with the CB2 receptors, it can help with swelling and healing. If the cause is a chemical imbalance, well you guessed it, CBD can also help with that, too. By regulating your brain chemistry, CBD can help you get out there and exercise even when depression says to stay in bed.

They’re Anxious

When you are riddled with anxiety, everything is essential to do. Which becomes overwhelming, and you may end up doing none of it. Many seniors suffer from anxiety, and it keeps them from focusing on caring for themselves. By taking CBD, they can relax and start to love themselves.

Because CBD elevates anandamide, it regulates our mood. When our neurons are pushing out chemicals to send anxious signals to the receiving cells, the endocannabinoids come in and tell them that there is just no way that’s going to fly. CBD helps with the anxious jitters, paranoia, and that pit in your heart that never seems to go away. For extreme anxiety that makes it almost impossible to function, using products like CBD Vape Juice can help you feel relaxed quickly so you can go on about your exercise routine.

Why Is It So Important That Seniors Exercise?

Many illnesses that don’t spring up until old age can be combatted with exercise. For instance, you can make your arthritis less severe from exercising. Regular physical activity helps lubricate the joints which help relieve you from the pain and stiffness that is so common with the disease.

Other diseases that are related to obesity such as heart disease, hypertension, and metabolic dysfunction can also be affected by a regular exercise routine. By keeping active, you can lower your blood pressure, lose unhealthy fat, and regulate your metabolism.

Which CBD Product Is Best For You?

The best product really depends on what you are trying to get out of it. If you need relief quickly, sublingual methods like tinctures and inhalation methods like concentrates and e-cigarettes get the CBD into your bloodstream quickly. If you need help functioning throughout the day, taking CBD orally through pills or edibles will give you that long-lasting relief. Be sure to stop by our shop and get yours today!

As we age, our bones stop being as strong as they used to be. Bone diseases are prevalent amongst the elderly, with 8.9 million fractures caused by osteoporosis happening a year. Some may find themselves in hospitals the majority of the year due to small falls that broke them apart. CBD oil could be the new treatment and preventative for bone disease, showing promise in the lab helping brittle bones gain their strength back.

Why Are Our Bones Getting Weaker?

Overproduction Of Chemicals

Your body can produce too many chemicals, resulting in messing with your bone chemistry. When your cortisol and adrenal levels are too high, this can result in weaker bones. It’s stated that this often happens with old age, which explains why bone density is lost throughout the years.

Bone Absorption

Our bones may also get weaker because they are breaking down faster than they can build back up. Your bones are always changing through bone absorption which turns to bone development. If your bones are absorbing too much and too quickly, it can make for brittle bones.

Low Collagen Levels

Collagen makes up the majority of bone mass; creating bones, tendons, skin, and cartilage. One reason that collagen levels can get low in an individual is that of age. This is especially true for women, with studies showing that collagen levels suffer significantly more after menopause. With low levels of collagen, your bones lose mass because they have so little to work with.

Slow Callus Formation

When your bones break, callus forms at the end so that it can begin the healing. It bridges the gap between fractures and helps the bone reform into one. However, if you have a disease that keeps the callus from growing, it could make the process of healing take a lot longer.

How Can CBD Help?

CBD interacts with your body’s endocannabinoid system. It is the type of medicine that gets a V.I.P all-access pass to your body. It regulates your mood, it stabilizes your cells, and it promotes healthy living within your skin walls.

CBD can help with bone health through promoting the elevation of chemicals that may be lacking. When your body isn’t producing enough collagen, CBD elevates the chemicals production. Cannabidiol has also shown that it can make callus grow faster than without treatment.

On the other hand, CBD can also inhibit production of chemicals that may be doing damage to your body. Cannabidiol has shown in studies that it regulates cortisol and adrenal levels, preventing further bone damage.

CBD is one of the most tolerated medications you can get on the market with a multitude of health benefits. If you are thinking of switching to CBD instead, talk to your doctor if you are taking other medications. It could cancel them out to where you don’t have to pop as many pills every day, or it could have an adverse reaction to the pharmaceutical’s chemicals. Stop by our shop today to get your CBD oil pills that could replace half of your medicine cabinet!

The Terror Of Dementia And How CBD Can Help

Are you caring for a loved one with dementia? Are you frustrated? Try to have patience, they are going through a lot right now.
When you think of dementia, what do you see? Someone forgetting where they put their keys? Forgetting names? This can be how it starts, but dementia is more than just things slipping from your memory. We have discovered that CBD oil might be the solution to preventing dementia, showing improvements in patients who are suffering. Knowing more about what exactly is going on in someone with dementia will make it a lot easier to help them and decide if medical marijuana is the right route to take.

Memory Loss

The memory loss in dementia patients can far surpass forgetting where they put their keys. There have been instances where people will walk out of their house into the street thinking they are going somewhere in their reality, but they are only wandering aimlessly. Patients can forget they took their medication, which can result in overdoses or not getting the medication they need at all.

This damage is caused by progressive damage to the brain which CBD oil has been known to help treat. Though there isn’t enough research done on reversing this process, there has been evidence of at least slowing it down.

Depression and Anxiety

Just imagine for a moment being alone. Completely alone. In a place you don’t recognize, around people you don’t know, having no idea what is going on. You think for a moment, where is my husband or wife? And you have to be reminded, once again, that they have passed. And you have to experience that loss all over again. Imagine the type of stress your brain would be under that and how your mental health would decline.

Many patients with dementia act out, which is understandable. They are confused, angry, sad, all of the negative emotions with none of the good ones. It can be frustrating helping patients with dementia because it seems like a thankless job. Try to have patience, try to be understanding, they need you more than ever right now.

Cannabis oil has shown that is works just as well as anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications. For the elderly, many pharmaceuticals can be more dangerous than they would for the general public. It also can be hazardous in the circumstance of forgetting whether you took medicine or not. CBD is very well tolerated at high levels and doesn’t have the withdrawal effects that pharmaceuticals have if overlooked for a day.

Pain

It can be difficult to know if your loved one is in pain when they have dementia. When they are so far into the disease, they may become unresponsive. However, paying attention to behavioral changes and facial expressions can really help you figure out whether or not they need help. For some cases, using strong opioids are the only things that work. However, that shouldn’t be the only option when it comes to the elderly’s body.

Starting off with CBD topicals can help targeted areas that may be hurting your loved one. CBD edibles, over time, help get the hard to reach pain that is caused by neurological issues. It’s important to talk to a doctor before adding CBD to your loved one’s medication because it can have adverse effects when mixed with certain medicines. The cool thing about that is that it could potentially replace many drugs that cause the reactions.

Dementia can be scary, but having you there makes it more comfortable. Someone to watch over and care for them as they say goodbye to the world they once knew. It may be hard at times, but just imagine the torment they are going through. Be patient, be loving, and have their best interest in mind. If you think that medical marijuana is the route to go, check out our shop. We have a great variety of CBD oil products that are safe and easy to use.

5 Benefits of Youth Programs in Assisted Living Centers

Seniors staying at assisted living centers should take into account whether or not there is a program that involves the youth. It’s fun, it’s exciting, and doing activities with children boosts mental and physical health. Here are five reasons you should make sure to consider youth programs when you choose where you will be spending the next chapters of your life.

1. Teaches New Skills

There is no doubt that older adults know a great deal and can benefit our youth with their wisdom. But our kids know a lot about our new world, too. By mixing these two age groups, both generations benefit from a sharper mind.

The wisdom the older generation holds brings value to our youth in a way no other age can compare. Seniors can bestow upon the younger generation teachings that, if listened to, can help build character. Having made the many mistakes a lifetime brings, and being graced with many relationships, our seniors can show children their errors before they make them, and how to build themselves up in a way they have learned over many years.

Many older adults have been practicing hobbies or talents for years, with valuable knowledge that could help a child develop new skills. The children have something to offer in this aspect as well. Whether it is young toddlers or older teens, they all have something they could teach all of us whether it be something on the iPad or violin. Knowledge is something beautiful that helps our society progress, and the exchange is where the most growth happens.

2. Gives Seniors A Sense Of Accomplishment

Some children, unfortunately, don’t have a trusted adult at home. And having someone stable to teach them life lessons is exactly what they need. Becoming a mentor gives a sense of purpose, which may be lacking once they have lost their independence. They may be unable to drive themselves to the store whenever they please, but they can teach a child how to play chess or the beauty behind Tchaikovsky.

Many people who are living in assisted living centers may have families that live far away, and this can build a deep hole in their heart. It can be lonely when your family is so far away they can’t visit often. By going to a living center that has youth programs, the seniors can build a family-like bond with these children that they can see on a regular basis, creating a community that is healthy and lively.

3. Helps Children Learn How To Respect Their Elders

Some children don’t understand how to interact with the elderly. They are still new to this whole human interaction thing that seniors have mastered. They also might not have grandparents, having very little communication with the older generation. This can lead to a divide in ages without harboring a mutual understanding.

By being around older adults, children can learn how to respect and treat their elders. They can get involved in the community making it stronger. By caring about their elders, they want to take care of them. This can build a foundation of respect that carries on to adulthood that can benefit the seniors to come.

4. Helps Reduce The Risk of Depression In Seniors

More than 2 million seniors suffer from depression, and often times it can go untreated veiled by other illnesses. It is even estimated that 68% of adults over the age of 65 know little to nothing about depression. This can cause the mental disorder to fester and become worse. Being around children gives a fun and exciting way to target depressive symptoms such as lack of motivation, low energy, extreme sadness, and social isolation. Depending on the recreation, it can even help seniors find enjoyable ways to exercise with the group, which has proven to reduce symptoms of depression.

5. Increases Cognitive Performance

One thing seniors and children do when they are in groups together is play. Playing is about enjoying the experience, and it is beneficial for people of all ages. Playtime varies between individuals, but as long as it has no purpose and is fun, then it’s play. Seniors who play games strengthen and maintain their cognitive abilities. By engaging in these mental activities, seniors can find their memories being increased. And who knows best how to have fun doing pointless activities than children?

Seniors lose their appetites for a multitude of reasons. Being malnutrition is unhealthy itself, but adding old age to the mix is detrimental. Find out ways you can encourage your loved one to eat so they can regain their natural health.
More

Without a nutritional diet, the body is the perfect habitat for disease to grow. The body needs food to function because food is the body’s fuel. People of all generations are losing their appetite due to physical illness and mental health disorders, but seniors get the short end of the stick with age working against them. Even though cannabidiol (CBD) is an appetite stimulant because it regulates the body’s metabolism, medicine alone is not the most efficient way to solve a problem with the body. If you or someone you know are struggling with the inability to eat, there are some ways to help make the process easier.

What Causes Loss Of Appetite?

Loss of appetite can come from a range of sources like disease, poor environment and wear and tear on the body. But knowing why an individual’s desire to eat has left them is the key to figuring out how to fix it or at least learn to live with it safely. Not everything can be patched up and back to normal, but there are ways to work with what you’ve got.

Disease

Alzheimer’s Disease

Many times a person’s taste in food will change along with the progression of the disease. A completely new pallet that may have nothing healthy on the menu. It also can become difficult for individuals with Alzheimer’s to eat, making the task so much more undesirable. Some patients have even forgotten how to recognize hunger, making it difficult to remember to eat. And some patients have just lost interest in food altogether.

Parkinson’s Disease

Tremors make eating extremely difficult, and some individuals become fed up with the battle and give up entirely. Some patients experience extreme pain while digesting, making their appetite synonymous with suffering. Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease also often lose their sense of smell and develop depression which also are causes of loss of appetite. If the weight loss is extreme in the early stages of Parkinson’s, this could mean that the individual has a more severe case of the disease.

Thyroid Disorders

Thyroid disorders like hypothyroidism can make you slow down with symptoms of fatigue and depression. This is how individuals with a thyroid disease can lose weight instead of gaining it considering it slows down the metabolism. Once the body starts to require fewer calories, the appetite begins to diminish. And for those who have written off eating altogether, they will diminish as well with malnutrition.

Cancer

More than just chemotherapy makes cancer patients lose their appetite. Some cancers can make changes in the metabolism, and have swelling in the spleen which pushes against the stomach making an individual feel full. There are also ascites that is a buildup of fluid in the abdomen that can cause the cancer patient to lose their desire to eat.

Oral Diseases

Having sores in your mouth is going to make eating painful, and doing something that hurts is against human nature even if it is to do something for survival. It is difficult to fight that. If the disease affects the taste buds, that can also take the excitement out of eating. Some oral diseases infect the sinuses, making the nose unable to smell which takes away the rest of the taste in food.

Salivary Gland Problems

When an individual has a salivary gland disorder, they can lose their ability to taste and swallow. Without the proper lubricant your mouth needs to swallow food, it can be almost impossible for some to complete the task. It’s no surprise that one of the symptoms of the salivary gland viruses is reduced appetite.

Mental Health

Anxiety

Anxiety is the body’s natural response to fear. When someone has an anxiety disorder, their brain is telling your body there is a threat consistently, even when there isn’t one. If you think back to the caveman days, a threat may have meant a Mammoth walking around outside your cave, and you and your family have to run, and you have to run for miles. You can’t use the bathroom, eat, or sleep. All you can do is escape and survive. In the future of today, your body still will shut down those survival needs when there is danger around. You don’t have time to eat, you have a Mammoth to outrun! Therefore many people with anxiety are unable to hold on to an appetite.

Depression

One of the things depression does is take the sparkle out of life. It does this by keeping your brain from experiencing pleasure through dopamine. Our body knows to eat because of the reward system in our brains. Every time we do something beneficial for survival, the brain celebrates by giving you a flood of good old dopamine. This way, when we see this survival activity, we want to do it again. We need to do it again to survive. This is how addiction works, as well. But if the body isn’t receiving dopamine when it is doing an action, it isn’t necessary and making it unenjoyable. Therefore, people with depression will experience not only a lack of appetite but also their sex drive goes down, and it is difficult for them to sleep. Because what our body should need is to refuel with food, repopulate, and sleep. People with depression don’t get that memo.

Loss of Control

Many times growing into the older adult phases of an individuals life can result in losing independence. Many seniors vision decays, making them unable to drive. They may be unable to make their own food or even put their own clothes on. It is human nature to crave freedom, and some may only find it when they can refuse to eat.

Mealtimes are Unpleasant

Though it may be a passing moment for family members and friends, mealtime can leave an impact on just about anyone, but especially seniors struggling with physical or mental health. If there are often arguments or fighting, it may give the feeling of anxiety whenever it is time to eat. This can cause someone to dread every meal, making them even less likely to eat when they make it to the table.

Poor Daily Regimen

Lack Of Exercise

Exercise is essential for senior’s general health. It improves physical and mental strength and resilience. Physical activity also burns calories which makes the body crave more energy, and it knows the only way it can get it is food. It does this by increasing the hormones in the body that make you crave food. By adding exercise to an everyday routine, even something as small as a short walk, it can help the body want food. For individuals who find that they have no energy because they haven’t regulated their appetite yet, CBD is known to boost energy and concentration making the exercise easier to do and more efficient. This also can help many illnesses that cause a lack of appetite, killing many birds with one stone.

Dehydration

Water helps people digest food and helps organs work properly. Not drinking enough water can cause you to become dehydrated which can bring on fatigue and dry mouth. One of the most common causes of loss of appetite is fatigue, because of your body’s negligence to crave food. Dry mouth can also lower one’s appetite by making it more difficult to eat and swallow.

Lack of Routine

The body has a clock; it is called the biological clock. It knows at what time of day things should happen because of what it has observed over time. If an individual goes to sleep every night at 8 pm, their body will adjust and start to get tired around eight at night. The same goes for food. If an individual is eating at sporadic moments of the day, this could be confusing to the body. Especially if someone has an issue with their appetite. Just by setting a scheduled time to eat can make the world of a difference in increasing someone’s appetite.

How CBD May Help Gain an Appetite

CBD and Mental Health

Sometimes depression and anxiety are so debilitating, even the most loving and nurturing individuals can’t get them to come out of their world. It can be difficult to reach someone who buries themselves in their own mental torment, but studies have proved that CBD is as effective as pharmaceutical antidepressants, and has been known to eliminate anxiety. For individuals who have behavioral issues due to anger and agitation from their illnesses, CBD can assist in calming them down, making it easier to walk the road towards a healthier life together.

Medicine In Food

One way to trick yourself into eating is by putting medication in your food. You have to eat it; your dose is in there. And if anything, at least you ate that this meal. By cooking CBD into brownies or pasta sauce, you can gain an extra incentive to eat while having fun making new recipes to keep the meals exciting.

Make sure to serve a lot of liquid with the meal. Keep in mind that you will fill up faster with the liquids, but it will make the food easier to consume. Try to make sure you are making soft foods that go down easy and taste good enough for you or your loved one to want to try to eat them. This is also a great way to help reluctant patients take their medicine.

CBD Tinctures

Some medications can cause dry mouth, which makes food taste different. This can cause a loss of appetite. Taking pills can also be awkward with dry mouth, making it difficult to swallow. For seniors who can’t hold down tablets and can’t eat, tinctures can help improve their appetite. It is a great way to get CBD in the system quickly and easily, providing a quick remedy. By taking CBD, it will regulate the metabolism and the brain chemistry that is involved with eating, bringing the individuals body back to a regular baseline.

Everyone is being told they need to exercise, it is a great way to maintain physical and mental health in individuals of all ages. It truly is like the CBD of activities. You can do it in several different ways depending on your comfort level, it has a multitude of beneficial side effects and can help maintain a high quality of life.

Seniors benefit specifically because of the time in their lives they have reached. About 80% of older adults have a chronic disease, and about half have two or more. Medication like Cannabidiol (CBD) alone won't fix every ailment, and exercising is a great activity to help fight alongside medicine and lifestyle changes for relief.

Makes You More Creative

Exercising increases creative thinking, which enhances problem-solving skills. This can help battle confusion for seniors with dementia and boost their confidence in the ability to come up with new ideas. They may also find themselves more productive with this new way of thinking.

When researchers studied athletes who exercised every day against those who didn’t, they put them through a creativity test. In the portion where the subjects were supposed to create multiple solutions for one problem, the subjects who exercised regularly performed better than their counterparts.

Increases Memory

Exercising can reduce insulin resistance and inflammation while promoting cell growth. The parts of the brain that involve memory and thinking are larger in people who exercise than people who don’t because of exercising’s ability to keep brain cells healthy and growing.

You can even go a step farther and create simple routines to memorize. By practicing using this portion of the brain while exercising, you could turbo-charge your memory strengthening experience.

Arthritis Management

Even though it might sound painful, exercising is useful for managing arthritis. It helps keep the muscles around the affected areas strong, and also diminishes bone loss. With constant use, the joints will be receiving more lubricant as well for less pain and stiffness. It can be challenging to get going when it comes to joint stiffness. By using CBD, you can reduce the inflammation and get started on a routine that will strengthen your body over time.

Heart Health

Exercising is great for your heart’s health. It strengthens your body so it doesn’t have to work so hard to breathe oxygen. This helps individuals with cardiovascular issues because often times they get fatigued from small amounts of physical activity or simple daily tasks. It also helps lower blood pressure, which helps reduce the risk of damaging arterial walls and helps blood go to the brain efficiently.

Individuals who participate in exercise also lower the likelihood of developing back pain and other physical disabilities. For patients who suffer a heart attack and engage in exercise afterward, their mortality rate declined by 20-25%.

Diabetes

One of the leading causes of diabetes is obesity. It's not surprising that by doing exercise, you will lose weight and begin to see results. It also lowers your blood sugar without medication, which can help reduce your risk of heart disease. If you are out of shape, no problem! Just start a little bit a day. Even if it is only five minutes. Then slowly build up more time, and eventually, you will have the strength to have a full-on regimen!

Obesity

Obesity often occurs because the individual is eating too much and not burning it off. Exercising is a great preventative and treatment for obesity, helping you burn off the extra calories you might have taken throughout the day. Starting a new diet is difficult; it seems that every other day is a cheat day. By exercising your body will begin to crave healthy foods, making it easier to keep on track to a healthier new you.

Cancer

Women who exercise have a 30-40% lower chance of developing breast cancer. High levels of estrogen play a part in breast cancer, and exercising helps lower the blood estrogen. Exercise also reduces the risk of colon cancer by 20%. Exercise brings changes to stomach acids and other substances which leads to the reduced risk of the disease.

Depression

When you work out, your body produces a chemical called endorphins. This chemical has similar effects to morphine, reducing pain and elevating pleasure. It is also the same chemical released when people self-harm, and is an excellent way to segue to a healthier coping mechanism. It can also reduce stress and improve self-esteem which are essential factors in depression.

Hypertension

When you exercise you strengthen your heart, and a stronger heart doesn’t have to work as hard to pump blood. This reduces the force that pushes the blood through the arteries, in turn preventing arterial wall damage. Exercise is as effective as some blood pressure medications, but it could take up to around three months before you start seeing effects in your blood pressure.

Dementia

Researchers have found that moderate or vigorous physical activity on a regular basis can help improve brain capacity. A chemical called choline elevates when there is an increased loss of nerve cells, which typically happens in Alzheimer’s Disease. Exercise can prevent the chemical from increasing. These studies have shown that exercise has protective properties, which are exactly what dementia patients need.

Bone Density

Bone density increases during regular resistance exercises. It helps retain calcium and stimulate bone formation. While the muscles are bulling on the bone, it encourages a bone-building process. Simple activities like walking to tough workouts like weight training, they all help your bones grow big and strong.

Insomnia

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in adults. Many over-the-counter sleep-aid medications can be harmful and addicting. Luckily, exercise can help with insomnia. The first thing exercise does is decreases anxiety and depressive symptoms which often keep people awake. The change in body temperature from normal, to hot, to a cooling down period can put the body into sleep mode. It can also help regulate your body’s clock depending when exercise is performed, which is what may be keeping individuals awake at odd hours.

Immune System

Exercising is good for your immune system by the way it flushes your system and controls some of your body’s chemicals. Physical activity can rid your lungs and airways of bacteria, reducing the likelihood of you catching a common cold. It also boosts your immune cells, making them work harder to find anything in your body trying to harm you. The bacteria in your body can halt its growth because of the rise in temperature due to exercise, and physical activity also slows down the release of stress hormones that may weaken your system.

General Mortality

If you are obese, with high blood pressure, poor sleeping habits, are depressed, with dementia, weak bones, and a poorly functioning immune system, your health is going to suffer. Even if you don’t have all of these things at once, your mortality rate decreased the more problems that persist in your body. By exercising, you take more control over your body. You can help it become as strong as it can be, making sure that you are around a little longer.

What exercises can seniors do?

Not everyone is expected to run marathons to keep up their health. Actually, no one is. It is suggested that you do your version of your work out for at least 30 minutes a day several times a week, which doesn’t take up a lot of time or effort. There are some simple workouts that older adults can start with that will be more comfortable on them if they haven’t gone for a walk in a while.

Aerobics

This is a prevalent form of exercise because you can start small and still have incredible results. This would be activities like running, walking, or swimming. If the individual gets fatigued quickly, spread out the thirty minutes throughout the day and have three short ten-minute exercising spurts.

Strength and Resistance

Many people might feel like they are too weak to even think about building their strength through weights. But if weights are too much, using resistance bands works just as well and are less straining on the body. Start with only small sets that you interchange throughout the work out to focus on different areas of the body, and build a regimen that focuses on problem areas.

Stretching and Flexibility

This type of exercise is a great way to build balance and reduce injuries while exercising. While doing activities like yoga, you can strengthen and stretch muscles building core strength. It can also be extremely beneficial to mental health, giving the individual time to meditate and relax.

CBD Medicine Can Make Working Out Easier

If someone is in a lot of pain, it may be difficult for them to get the motivation to exercise and work through it. Same goes for mental illnesses, which can keep their brain from thinking logically making exercise take a back seat. Hemp oil medication can assist in helping the pain subside through workouts, making it easier to build core strength. CBD also works as an antidepressant, making motivation more natural in depressed patients. The even better thing about CBD is that it helps treat almost every reason you should exercise. This way you can reach your goals of health even faster, being able to target so many things at once in multiple ways.

Dementia can come early on, but many people begin experiencing it with old age. It can be a scary time forgetting things, having a muddled mind and feeling alone. That is why we have to do our best and be there for our loved ones during this time.

Though there is evidence that cannabis helps with dementia, it is becoming common knowledge that medication alone cannot cure many mental and physical ailments. As a caretaker or someone who has a loved one with dementia, there is plenty you can do to help them through this hard time.

Know about the disease

The first thing you can do to help anyone going through something is to learn about what it is they are dealing with. This gives you more understanding, giving you the ability to be the person who helps them feel less alone. They can talk to you about it, and you will know exactly what they mean. This also will grant you patience, which is something that is necessary when aiding someone battling a disease.

What Is Dementia

Dementia comes about when the brain is damaged, which can happen through strokes and diseases like Alzheimer’s. Everyone experiences dementia a little different because it depends on what part of the brain is damaged. Symptoms can include memory loss, behavioral change, as well as losing eyesight and mobility. Many diseases cannot be reversed, and the best you can do is halt the process. The best way to tackle your patients or loved one’s dementia is to understand what disease is causing it.

Different forms of dementia

While one person may lose their motor functions, another might lose their long-term memory. The best way to fully connect with your patient or loved one is to understand what kind of dementia they are going through.

Alzheimer’s Disease

This is the most common type of dementia, between 60-80% of dementia cases stem from Alzheimer’s. This disease is a degenerative neurological disease, meaning it will get worse over time. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s, but with treatment, many symptoms can be treated.

Symptoms

Apathy

Depression

Poor short-term memory

Impaired communication

Poor judgement

Disorientation

Confusion

Behavior changes

Difficulty speaking and swallowing

Vascular Dementia

Vascular Dementia is when the brain starts taking damage from low blood flow. This type of dementia can get worse over time through multiple strokes or other conditions that block or damage the blood flow.

Symptoms

Disorientation

Impaired social skills

Confusion

Sudden headaches

Loss of vision

Trouble understanding speech

Trouble speaking

Difficulty walking

Impaired planning and judgment

Uncontrollable laughing or crying

Unable to pay attention

Dementia with Lewy Bodies

Lewy Bodies dementia is a progressive disease that is caused by a buildup of proteins in your brain. The same proteins that cause Parkinson’s, and there are also tangles, and plaques linked with Alzheimer’s. This means that the patient may suffer the worst of both worlds.

Symptoms

Visual hallucinations

Tremors

Depression

Dizziness

Poor attention span

Constipation

Sweating

Irregular blood pressure

Trouble sleeping

Rigid muscles

Disorganized speech

Long naps during the day

Memory loss

Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s mainly affects the body, but it also can cause dementia. When a person’s cognition is so impaired, they can’t carry on regular everyday activities, that is when it begins to be classified as dementia. It’s been estimated that at least 50% of Parkinson’s patients have at least a mild cognitive impairment.

Symptoms

Fatigue

Stiff muscles

Dizziness

Nightmares

Trouble sleeping except through the day

Anxiety

Apathy

Depression

Distorted sense of smell

Unable to fully control bladder

Confusion

Amnesia

Reduced facial expressions

Constipation

Drooling

Difficulty swallowing

Weight loss

Small handwriting

Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD)

This is a group of disorders that cause dementia from the overproduced proteins tau and TDP43. These disorders affect the frontal and temporal areas of the brain, which is why things like memory and speech are what suffers. There are three different subtypes of this dementia.

Behavior variant frontotemporal dementia

When the brain loses control over judgment, empathy, foresight, and other cognitive abilities, it will cause the patient’s personality to change. It can happen to people as young as 20, but generally begins to show itself in adults from 50 to 60.

Primary progressive aphasia

This type of degeneration affects the speech, writing, language, and comprehension abilities. This often comes upon adults in their mid-life, which is before 65. They may lose the ability to understand or formulate sentences, or they can just be incredibly hesitant when they speak, and the grammar is incorrect.

Disturbance of Motor Function

Three illnesses do not show the same symptoms as the behavior variant and the primary progressive aphasia. However, they do still bring changes in motor or muscle functions.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), causes muscle weakness or wasting.

Corticobasal syndrome, causing limbs to become uncoordinated or stiff.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), causing difficulty in walking, change in posture, muscle movements, and can even affect eye movements.

The Difference Between Alzheimer’s and Frontotemporal Degeneration

It may be tricky figuring out which one your loved one has because the symptoms are so similar. They both change behaviors and memory loss. But there are a few differences in when symptoms start to occur in someone's life, and there are some symptoms that are extremely common for one disease but uncommon for the other.

Alzheimer’s patients hallucinate and have delusions, that is a symptom that is actually not very common for someone with FTD. An Alzheimer patient is also easier to understand when their speech begins to fade because they generally don’t have as much difficulty as someone with FTD.

Behavioral changes are frequent in both diseases. However, in FTD, they begin to appear a lot earlier on in the condition than Alzheimer’s. However, Alzheimer’s patients start to lose their memory earlier on in the illness than FTD patients.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease

Luckily, this disease only affects one in one million people per year. This disease is as haunting as it is deadly. It creeps up late in life, and then the effects worsen at a rapid pace. About 90% of patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease will die within a year of symptoms starting to show. And 85% of the people with the disease showed no risk factors before symptoms.

Symptoms

Personality change

Impaired judgement

Memory loss

Impaired vision

Insomnia

Depression

Unusual sensations

Involuntary muscle jerks

Lose sight completely

Lose mobility functions

Normal pressure hydrocephalus

When excess cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain’s ventricle, an individual can experience issues in their cognitive thought structure, as well as mobility and bladder control. This is called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. This is a particularly tricky disease because doctors say the symptoms are so prevalent in other brain disorders, so they don’t even have a reliable statistic of how many people have it.

Symptoms

Difficulty walking

Difficulty in decision making

Slower thought process

Inability to concentrate

Changes in behavior or personality

Loss of bladder control

Huntington’s Disease

This is a fatal disorder that is also genetic. Parents with Huntington’s Disease are thought to have a 50/50 chance of passing it down to their children. What this disease does is break down the cells in the brain, which deteriorates an individuals physical and mental abilities. Some would say that this disease is like having Parkinson’s, ALS, and Alzheimer’s all at the same time.

Symptoms

Depression

Mood swings

Personality or behavior change

Impaired judgement

Memory loss

Involuntary movements

Weight loss

Difficulty speaking

Difficulty swallowing

Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome

This is a brain disorder that is caused by the lack of vitamin B-1 and is the most common in alcoholics. It is actually two diseases happening at the same time. The first is called Wernicke Disease. There is bleeding that occurs in the brain, causing damage to systems involving vision, balance, and coordination. If this disease is treated quickly, the second round could be eliminated. If not, symptoms of Korsakoff Psychosis will begin to show. This is a disorder that happens after severe brain damage and causes memory loss. Which is why we find these two with our dementia diseases.

Symptoms of Wernicke

Double vision

Difficulty keeping upper eyelid open

Confused mental state

Loss of muscle coordination

Involuntary eye movements

Symptoms of Korsakoff

Amnesia specifically for events that happened after the Wernicke disease

Difficulty comprehending

Hallucinations

Trouble putting words together to make comprehensible sentences

Confabulation

Mixed Dementia

This type of dementia is when the patient is showing abnormal symptoms from multiple types of dementia. The symptoms depend on what brain damage has occurred, which is why it is so good to know the symptoms of the main types of dementia. It is always good practice to speak to a professional as soon as you are suspicious of symptoms, it could potentially save your loved one’s life.

Risk Factors Of Dementia

Aging

Aging is the most common factor in the diseases that cause dementia. The majority of people with dementia are above the age of 65. This isn’t something that can be prevented, but living a healthy lifestyle can significantly decrease the risks of many of the diseases that cause dementia.

Family History

When knowing the family history includes some nasty baggage that can lead to disease, an extra effort can be made in preventing that targeted illness. There are two different types of classifications for the genes that show probable sickness, risk gene and deterministic gene. Risk genes show that you and your lineage may develop an illness, while deterministic genes are a sure bet that you are going to develop the hereditary disorder.

Gender

Women are significantly more likely to develop Alzheimer’s Disease than men. However, men are slightly more likely to develop dementia related to stroke and heart disease. Other than these specific dementia causes, the gender doesn’t really affect the risk in most cases of dementia.

Cardiovascular Factors

Damage to the heart, blood flow, or arteries can have an impact on someone’s chances of developing dementia. This includes type 2 diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Each of these are avoidable through healthy lifestyle choices and a good environment.

Depression

Depression is not only known as a symptom of dementia, but it can also actually cause dementia as well. Unfortunately, they aren’t sure why depression causes dementia. They just know that an average of 39% of patients with depression eventually begin to show the signs of dementia. They also know that half of the patients with late on-set depression have cognitive impairment. What we do know for sure, is that getting your patient or loved one the mental health care they need can potentially save their life.

Learn How to Strengthen Memory

The most common symptom of dementia is memory loss. There is no guarantee that engaging memory boosting activities will prevent dementia, it has certainly shown promise by improving cognitive skills of many patients. By strengthening the body and mind, many symptoms can become less severe.

Brain Training Apps

Some older adults have no problem using and understanding technology, and even welcome it. By using brain training apps, they can have fun while boosting their cognitive skills. Favorite apps include Luminosity, Fit Brains, and Happify.

Arts And Crafts

Art has been proven to help patients with dementia with its ability to boost cognitive skills as well as self-esteem. You can garden in or out of the house with a windowsill garden, choosing plants that don’t need extensive care. This will give them a sense of fulfillment, and something that can progressively become easy to remember.

Making a photo album with old pictures of your patient or loved one’s family is a great way to have a loving reminder. It’s important to remember not to push too hard when reminding dementia patients of the past considering not being able to remember is very frustrating.

Sing Songs

Music therapy has shown significant improvement in enhancing cognition. It is uplifting and enjoyable, which is reason enough to indulge in some savory tunes. But it also helps the brain make connections, becoming stronger, helping it function more efficiently. Your mind comes alive with music, which is especially helpful for dementia patients.

Help Make Predictable Schedules and Routines

By having a regular schedule, it helps the brain practice its long-term memory while dementia has been trying to take it over. By continually exercising the brain, it will the individual learn how to retain long-term information. This can be something as small as reading the paper to them every Sunday like they are used to, or things like scheduled meal times and exercise.

Help Keep Them Accountable With Proper Nutrition

A poor diet can do a lot of harm to a patient with dementia. It is essential to eat foods that encourage healthy blood flow and brain activity. Foods like vegetables, nuts, and berries are great and easy to eat for those who have a small appetite.

Exercise Is Important

Not only does exercise promote a healthy body that can reduce cardiovascular disease, but it also helps boost cognition. Exercise can reduce mental decline as well as improve memory. Many of the conditions that cause dementia also interfere with mobility. By doing moderate amounts of physical activity, it can help build strength. This helps reduce falls, improves general body health and improves self-confidence.

Be Patient With Your Patient

Your patient or loved one is going through a lot, and they need you to help make their life easier. Their mood may change, they may become unlikable, but remember that is the disease. Try not to push their past selves on them and accept and love who they are. They are most likely very emotional, so avoiding fights and arguing will really help their mental health. And this is when the most important tip of all comes in for loved ones and caretakers. Remember You.

Don’t Forget To Take Care Of Yourself

You aren’t going to be very helpful when you are stressed out or pushed to your limit. Understand it is okay that you need a break sometimes, even if you feel guilty. You are doing your best, and you have to be at your best to continue. Your mental health is just as important, so be sure to take care of that first.

As we get older, we have to start taking better care of our bodies and minds because they have become more fragile with age. It’s common for seniors to have a daily regimen filled with medication, but that isn’t the only way to keep the body and mind fresh.

There are many different types of therapies that can be beneficial to seniors, but sometimes the hard part is making the treatment process appealing. To get around this obstacle, there are many hobbies that can have some of the same effects as certain therapies. One of those beneficial hobbies is art.

DementiaThe arts have been a staple in every culture since the beginning of time, and there is a good reason for it. It has been proven time and time again that learning and practicing an art is good for the mind and body, regardless of age. Seniors may not need the arts to mold them into outstanding members of society because they probably have already got that covered in their life. But the arts have incredible effects on the mind that people of all ages should take advantage of.

Art and Dementia

Dementia is most commonly thought of as a memory loss problem, but patients experience more symptoms than just that. They can become easily agitated, aggressive, riddled with anxiety, depression, and to top it all off insomnia will keep them exhausted. Many of the symptoms of dementia work against each other, making the illness even more overwhelming.

They have yet to find a cure for dementia, and often drug treatments are unsuccessful. This is why many seniors who suffer from this illness are encouraged to try different types of therapy; one of the most efficient ones being art therapy.

When dementia patients are encouraged to create visual art, they show a noticeable enjoyment that carries over into other aspects of their life. Often patients didn’t realize the talent they had or didn’t know how cathartic the experience of creating was. If anything, art just improves the general happiness of the patient. But it is such an effective therapy because it does so much more than that.

Art can also improve social behavior and self-esteem in older adults with dementia. This can reduce the psychiatric symptoms that deplete the patients quality of life such as depression and aggression. Studies also show that art helps enhance cognitive abilities and memory, even for seniors with severe brain disorders.

Dr. Arnold Bresky is a physician who has created a program called the “Brain Tune Up” that utilizes art therapy for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. With this program, he has seen a 70% success rate in the improvement of his patients’ memories. One patient recorded that it even helped her pass her driver's license test.

By drawing and painting, patients are increasing connectivity between the right and left hemispheres of the brain and growing new brain cells. This incredible feat can help improve motor functions, memory, and mental stability.

Art and Empathy Tolerance and Feelings of Love

With age often comes physical problems and loss of loved ones that can result in the patient feeling very negative. This can close them up from the world, and they can stop exhibiting empathy and love. This isn’t something that has to stay permanent, and just enjoying art can help bring the love back out of older adults.

A study of over 10,000 students found that just an hour trip to an art museum changed the way they thought and felt. While the students showed an increase in critical thinking skills, they also showed more empathy towards how people lived in the past. They also expressed a higher tolerance towards people different from themselves, which is a feat in of itself.

Art can help seniors reconnect with society, and remind them of the beauty that once was and still is. And they don’t even have to participate in the art itself to get this connection to the world. Professor Semir Zeki discovered that just by viewing art can give the pleasurable sensation similar to falling in love.

Not everyone can view a fantastic work of art or visit the museum every day, luckily it is the future, and there is an app for that. The Daily Art app shares one masterpiece a day with its background to educate as well as improve your quality of life.

Brain Connectivity and Plasticity

For a long time, we thought that with age your brain slowly stops changing and loses plasticity. But we now know that the brain can grow and change at any time in our lives. To keep your brain in tip-top shape, or to bring it back to a reasonable base level, art can help you achieve a healthy growing brain.

Studies show that art increases psychological resilience. This means that by picking up an artistic hobby, seniors can improve their ability to handle things in everyday life. And let’s face it, as we grow with age so do our problems. Whether it be financial, social, or internal, practicing art can get their brain in the right condition to handle anything that comes their way.

Art Boosts Self-Esteem and Sense of Accomplishment

Many seniors are depressed from physical ailments, events in their lives, or just everyday brain chemistry. This can cause them to have low self-esteem, which makes the depression even worse. While they are battling this beast and trying to find ways to suppress it, art is an excellent weapon of choice.

Art gives you a chance to express yourself, which can be lots of fun. It offers seniors something to focus on and even gives meaning to parts of their day where they might have found none. For older adults who have problems concentrating, don’t be surprised if this new ability transfers over to other parts of your life. And the enjoyment from accomplishing multiple tasks can send depression to the back seat

Art also gives the opportunity to learn new things, which is a massive boost to self-esteem. By adding unique traits and skills, it can feel like adding worth to some who feel down and worthless. Art can give depressed seniors a reason to get out of bed and spend time with other people. It is a great tool to open up social circles, bringing in an even higher quality of life with friends.

Art Encourages Creative Thinking

Why would a senior want to learn creative thinking skills? Because it is more than knowing what colors pair well on the canvas or what chords beautifully go together. Creative thinking is the ability to generate alternative ideas to a problem. It gives you the ability to see parts of the puzzle that aren’t so obvious. With this kind of thinking, seniors can live more productive and fulfilling lives.

Art Relieves Stress

Whether you are painting, writing, sculpting, or playing music, all types of art are therapeutic. Studies suggest that just 45 minutes a day of art can significantly reduce stress levels, and this is extremely important for seniors.

The chemical in the body that can make people feel large amounts of unwanted stress is called Cortisol. Researchers measured the cortisol of all the patients who experience high stress before they began their art projects. After completion, when they measured the stress chemical in the participants, 75% of them showed lower levels of cortisol.

You may think, but I can’t do any of that. I am not an artist. Well, neither were most of the participants in the study. When asked about their artistic background, most replied that it was limited. So even though they weren’t Van Gogh, they still benefitted from the act of being creative.

One of the main reasons that art lowers cortisol levels is because you can find yourself in an almost meditative state. It’s called the flow. When you are so focused on your project the rest of the world disappears, you go into a mindset that is similar to meditation. So similar, afterward you feel the mental benefits as if you were meditating.

Though medication like CBD oil is exceptionally effective when treating stress, depression, and dementia, the battle still persists. By pairing lifestyle changes and medicine, seniors can truly start feeling like themselves again.

Whether you are a caretaker, a loved one, or a senior yourself, you can understand how difficult it can be to have depression at the later stages of life. Something that often goes under the radar because of the similar symptoms it has with the many diseases common in old age is also something that is entirely treatable. Just by learning the warning signs, you can help someone who is battling their inner demons all alone.

What Is Depression

Depression is a medical condition that alters your state of mind that needs more than just medicine to be cured. Though using cannabidiol (CBD) can help a lot of the symptoms and can eventually help cure depression, it would be a lot easier with help from a caregiver or loved one.

Some can go their entire lives without experiencing it, and then develop it when they are older. It can come from grieving the death of a loved one, extreme change that can cause fear or confusion, and is a symptom in many diseases that come about in older adults.

Depression is more than just feeling sad, it is like having a dark veil over everything in your life. Pain is stronger, nothing matters, and there is no ounce of energy to try to change anything. It can be especially hard to break out of it when the person battling depression is doing it on their own.

Seniors Are Unaware They Have Depression

Depression is one of the most common disorders that older adults face. And it is one they often fight alone, unaware that they are actually depressed. This generation grew up in a thick stigma around mental illness, and not a lot was known or even accepted. Luckily, we are coming into a time where we finally realize just how important mental health is.

―I didn’t know anything about depression, so I didn’t know I was depressed. … The questionnaire was essential to getting me in for treatment. It was sent to me three times before I sent it back. I took medication and went to a class that helped me learn skills to work on the depression. … I now have two friends getting treatment for depression since I told them about my situation.‖ — Participant in a depression care management program (CDC, 2009a)

Out of the 39 million adults over the age of 65, seven million of them are battling depression. Depression in the elderly goes unnoticed often times, but it is extremely easy to detect. One of the best things we can do for our loved ones is look out for the signals and then suggest getting help.

Depression In Seniors Is Easy To Spot But Hard To Identify

Depression comes with a long list of mental symptoms, but it can also harm your physical health as well. These symptoms, however, are often hidden behind causations of other illnesses. Considering the senior community has high amounts of physical and mental illnesses, often times depression gets overlooked as a cause when the senior might have another illness that would create the same symptom.

For instance, someone with a gastrointestinal disease will have no appetite, and neither will someone who is depressed. The gastrointestinal disease is most likely the first thing the doctors are going to look at to treat to fix the problem. This same patient also unable to sleep, this insomnia might be brought on by pain or malnutrition. Which is a very intelligent deduction, however, there is a problem with seniors not getting the help they need with their depression. According to the CDC, 20% of seniors who were looking for help before successfully committing suicide went to the doctor that day.

It’s important to be able to recognize the mental and physical symptoms of depression so that you or your loved one can get the help that you truly need.

Physical Symptoms

Chronic Fatigue

Having depression can make you tired, constantly. Having chronic fatigue can make it difficult to move around and get things done because you don’t have the energy. This is why many people report their depressed loved ones unable to get out of bed. That as well as lack of motivation.

How You Can Help

Be patient with your loved one, remembering that their body is exhausted. It may seem like they have done nothing all day, but that is because of how devastatingly tired they are. You can encourage them with small spurts of exercise. Even if it is just a walk to the mailbox every day, you can still make a difference.

How CBD Can Help

CBD can give the body a natural boost without the jitters. If your loved one is exhausted, using CBD to get them to do the smallest amount of exercise can help them regain some of that energy they lost to depression.

Irregular Appetite

People battling depression also have an irregular appetite. It can come as overeating or under eating, but the most common in the elderly community is a decrease in appetite. Not eating can add to the chronic fatigue, as well, not fully replenishing your body of the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and energized.

How You Can Help

Try to make foods that you know your loved one enjoys. Try your best not to show frustration when they don’t take it right away. Let them know there is food ready for them whenever they need it. Unfortunately, it has to be their decision, or it will make the journey twice as hard. Snacking is also a great way to keep your loved ones with at least a little bit of food. By making yummy treats with CBD in them, you can also help rebuild their appetite while getting food in their system.

How CBD Can Help

CBD is known for regulating the neurological and immune system. This means it also regulates appetite. Whether depression has increased or decreased appetite, using CBD can help get the body back on track to a healthy eating schedule.

Increase In Pain

Depression and pain share a common neuro-pathway, dealing with the same neurotransmitters to transmit signals from cell to cell. This is why it is common for people with depression to have physical pain symptoms, and for people with chronic pain to have depression symptoms.

How You Can Help

Try to remember that even though they look fine, they are in pain. Draw them up a nice Epsom salt bath to help ease their muscles. Using creams and gels on their body also will help ease their pain. For the best effect without the harsh chemicals, using CBD topicals is great for treating targeted pain.

How CBD Can Help

Depression can cause joint and muscle pain, which can lead to poor sleeping habits and being nonactive. Both of which can worsen depression. Using CBD topicals, you can hit the spots that are hurting, efficiently decreasing the pain. It also just feels good not to have pain anymore, which is definitely a plus when dealing with depression.

Irregular Sleep Patterns

Insomnia is another symptom that comes with depression and can also cause distress. Many times when patients walk into the doctor's office, they are unsure of which came first in the patient. Irregular sleep patterns will only continue to fertilize your depression, making your mental health deteriorate.

How You Can Help

If your loved one is depressed and can’t sleep, there are a few things you can do to help make it a little easier to doze off.

Try not to hang out in the bed. Let the body and mind recognize this space as a time to sleep, not a time to be active.

Cut down on caffeine and sugars. Especially when it is closer to bedtime.

Try using aromatherapy and music to help you or your loved one fall asleep. There are plenty of scents that are meant to calm the mind that can help you doze off.

Having a set sleep schedule will get your biological clock set. The body will start to get tired at the same time every day, making it easier to fall asleep.

Many people can’t fall asleep because of anxiety, having a relaxing and clean environment can have positive effects on falling asleep.

How CBD Can Help

Though THC is most commonly thought of when using medical marijuana to sleep, CBD actually has some benefits that help the insomniac as well. Many people can’t sleep because of an elevated heart rate and racing mind due to stress. Depression can make you more agitated, making the slightest discomforts and annoyances magnified into an impossible obstacle. CBD helps calm the mind so you can tackle your stressors, and leaves you having a more restful sleep.

Mental Symptoms Of Depression

Constantly Sad

When someone is depressed, they have this constant feeling of sadness that they can’t shake. This takes the sparkle out of amazing things that we can encounter every day. It can make it almost painful to visit loved ones because so badly do the ones suffering want to put on a happy face to their grandchildren.

How You Can Help

This is not something your loved one can simply snap out of. They cannot get over it, and they can’t just be happy. Their brain isn’t allowing them to do so. Try to be encouraging of positivity. Be an uplifting spirit around them, reminding them what it looks like to be happy. Show them how to do it in case they have forgotten. Be loving, that is what they need most. They are caught up in a battle that can be very lonely, being by their side can be the best remedy some days.

How CBD Can Help

Because of Cannabidiol’s interaction with the nervous system, CBD also acts as an anti-depressant. If your loved one is already on anti-depressants, it is important you speak with the doctor before making any medicinal changes. Even though CBD is very safe for people of all ages to use, taking someone off of pharmaceutical anti-depressants is a delicate task that should only be done by a doctor.

Anxiety

Even though depression is known for its low energy, one of the main symptoms of depression is anxiety. Anxiety is exhausting, which can lead to poor sleeping habits, poor eating habits and an overall poor quality of life. Anxiety can also get extremely overwhelming, making people with depression have an even harder time coming up with the motivation to complete a task.

What You Can Do To Help

Try not to overwhelm your loved one knowing that they can handle very little at times. Doing things around the house for them so they aren’t thinking about it all day can really ease their mind. It can also put a dent in a task they have been avoiding because it is so overwhelming. By helping them complete it, you would be helping them reach a sense of fulfillment that would take the place of their depression for a few moments.

What CBD Can Do To Help

Using CPD Tinctures of E-liquids can help your loved one when they are experiencing chronic anxiety and are on the verge of a panic attack. It works quickly to calm their nerves and can help get them thinking clearly once again. These methods do not last all day, but they are extremely efficient in calming the anxious mind.

Hopelessness

This looks like a loss of interest in things they once loved, or lack of any motivation do to things they need to do. You may have already had the conversation about needing to shower more than once every two weeks, but they just don’t seem to care. What is the point when you are living in your own misery? This can also cause people to be late on paying bills, and not because they don’t have money. Some people will let the bill sit on the counter, just being another task that needs to be done. Severity is no longer a concept, everything is just a task that needs to be done, and they generally can’t find the motivation to care.

What You Can Do To Help

CBD can’t help with hopelessness, but you can. You can help brighten up their life by showing them how important they are to you. Just by visiting and spending time with them shows them they matter. Small little gifts that make you think of them could brighten their world, and a short walk in the park could clear their heads. Remind them of the beauty in the world around us, and that hope is still a tangible concept. Because if they matter to someone, maybe other things could matter, too.

And the generation that we have to thank the most is our seniors.

More

Gone are the days where when you think of cannabis you think of a group of teenage boys smoking a joint in the high school bathroom. Here are the days you think of relieving chemotherapy pains, halting tremors and increasing the appetite in the frail. And we have the seniors of this society to thank for that.

In 2002, the amount of the senior population that participated in marijuana was only 1.1%. In 2014, it raised up to 6.1%, which is a 455% increase in 12 years. In 2016, a national survey on Drug Use and Health surveyed 47,140 people. In the study, they asked about marijuana use daily and weekly. To no surprise, patients 50-64 had a 58% percent increase compared to the older statistics between 2002 and 2014. Patients older than 60 had a 250% increase in marijuana use.

What is it about this hemp plant that is getting seniors to try something they have been taught is poison their whole lives? This generation has heard some of the worst anti-marijuana propaganda you could find growing up in the 50s and 60s, and yet their numbers are increasing at the quickest rates. Our generation’s seniors pack quite the punch, and they are crushing the stigma around cannabis use.

Seniors Have To Take Too Many Pills

One reason there has been such a monumental incline on cannabis use from seniors is the number of pills they consume on a daily and even hourly basis. If there were only a way to turn six pills into one, it wouldn’t be so hard to get your medication down. And that’s exactly what switching to CBD has helped patients do.

If you are taking anti-depressants, arthritis medication, anxiety medication, medication for your weak bones, medication for your muscles, medication for your eyes and medication for your heart, it is very possible to replace some of these if not all with one solution. CBD works with your neurological and immune system, which trickles out into helping other systems indirectly like the cardiovascular system. Switching to hemp can help get rid of that handful of pills that need to be taken three times a day.

Seniors are also even opting out of pills altogether. They take so many, why add any more to the pillbox? Seniors are taking advantage of edibles for their depression and gastrointestinal issues, making it a different way to take your medication every day. Sometimes slowly eating a soft brownie is a lot easier than swallowing a pill.

Some Side-Effects Of Medications Have Harsher Consequences On Seniors

It’s no secret that as you get older, your body doesn’t work the way it did at its peak. Which is a problem considering seniors generally take the most amount of medication. This means a lot of chemicals are going into a body that might not be able to handle it.

The AARP has a list of medications seniors over the age of 65 should be wary of. The side effects include things like:

Heart Failure

Increase Blood Pressure

Stomach Bleeding and Ulcers

Increase Risk of Falls

Confusion

Toxic Kidneys

Seizures

Hallucinations

Stroke

Tremors

Death

Seniors are already going through a battle against an aging body, do they really need to deal with these extreme side effects? Many seniors are saying no, we’ve had enough.

Of the nine medications listen on AARP’s list, seven of them could be replaced by Cannabidiol. Like mentioned before, if you had to take five of them and now you only have to take two, that is a pretty big win. But not only are you replacing the handful of pills, but you are also replacing the handful of side effects as well.

Seniors are finally to the age where they can retire and relax. Play with the grandkids and reminisce on things of the past. They do not need to worry about stomach bleeding while they are rewarded for their time here on this earth.

Seniors Can’t Sleep

Nursing homes can have a lot of commotion. In the middle of the night, emergencies can happen, and people have to get where they need to be as quickly as possible. And that is going to create some noise. Also, being new to a nursing home can make it difficult to sleep. It can be scary and nerve-wracking moving into a new facility.

Seniors in nursing homes aren’t the only seniors that can’t sleep because of their nerves. Many seniors experience some form of anxiety, which can cause them to be unable to sleep. Between 3% and 14% of older adults have met the criteria for an anxiety disorder. While that number does jump to 27% in assisted living centers.

This sleepless anxiety can look like:

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Having reoccurring unwanted thoughts or rituals which they feel they cannot control.

Panic Disorder

Panic attacks, which are sudden feelings of terror, that happen without warning and repeatedly.

Phobias

An extreme irrational fear towards something that poses little to no threat.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Persistent symptoms like nightmares or flashbacks that come after a traumatic event.

Another reason many seniors can’t sleep is because of pain. The ongoing joke of, “It’s always something,” becomes more real once the lights go out. For some, it seems like as soon as one part of their body stops hurting, another pain appears out of the blue. The pains can range from mild annoyances to severe chronic pain. And chronic pain is almost impossible to sleep through.

To combat these issues, seniors everywhere are switching over to CBD instead of using over the counter sleeping pills. Unlike sleeping pills, hemp oil is not addictive, so seniors can safely take it without their body craving it. CBD also doesn’t leave you waking up groggy. It helps you actually rest when you sleep, so when you wake up it’s not even harder to get out of bed and onto your feet.

CBD Is Making It Easier For Seniors To Walk

Once you get to a certain age, you can’t lift the weights you used to and running on the treadmill hurts your joints just thinking about it. For many seniors, they turn to walking as their exercise. It gets them out of the house or facility with some fresh air, as well as helping keep the body healthy. Many even turn it into a social gathering which is incredible for their mental health.

One problem is that many seniors face joint and muscle pain issues. Whether is it fully diagnosed arthritis, or the bone density is so low it can be painful to move, CBD can help with those problems.

Seniors are taking CBD for arthritis relief because hemp oil is an anti-inflammatory. It calms down your body’s immune system which is what is attacking your joints and sends soothing chemicals to your brain like anandamide that help ease the pain. CBD not only helps with the joint problem, but it also helps with patients bone density. And don’t worry, if you have any slight injuries that are keeping you from taking your daily walk, CBD also helps keep your bones healthy and can aid in healing them when they are injured.

CBD Is Helping Seniors Regain Their Appetite

One thing that can come with old age is lack of appetite, and if that didn’t happen medications can make it happen just as well. Being underweight can cause physical health to decline as well as mental state. Once the psychological state begins to fall, it becomes even harder for someone to gain an appetite. But luckily CBD can help.

Hemp based products regulate appetite. Someone who is hungry all of the time may take CBD and feel like they are satisfied with less food, and might crave food less often. For those who need to eat more, CBD boosts the appetite, making the person suffering more likely to start eating.

Seniors are even giving themselves incentives to eat to help get their appetite back up and running. By putting CBD in foods like spaghetti sauce and garlic butter, it gives eating more of a purpose. It’s difficult to force yourself to eat when you aren’t hungry, and you feel like you might have no benefit, though you absolutely will. But by adding CBD, it can make the task of eating a little more important, giving more motivation.

Using cannabis as treatment is becoming more and more popular, and a special thanks can go to our strong-willed seniors who aren’t willing to give up the fight. After paying their dues to this world, they deserve a life that is pain-free and enjoyable while they play with their grandkids or going on that cruise they have dreamed about for the past ten years. And they are finally finding it in hemp oil. Could CBD be the solution to a problem that is holding you back?
