As the wardrobe is usually the second largest item in the bedroom, after your bed, it’s important that you purchase the right object for your needs. If you get hold of a wardrobe that’s a complete eyesore, or just doesn’t fit right, you’ll regret it every time you enter the room.

In order to ensure that you’re making the right decision when you purchase your new wardrobe, we’ve compiled this helpful guide. So, don’t just rush in and make an impulse purchase. Take your time to read through this advice and find the right wardrobe for you.

How will you use your wardrobe?

The first thing to consider when looking for a new wardrobe is what exactly you’ll be using it for. Do you need a wardrobe that has plenty of hanging space for long evening dresses? Or a wardrobe that has less hanging space but accommodates shirts, jackets and shorter skirts nicely? Is it better to have shelf space above or below the hanging rail, or on either side?

The answers to each of these questions will help you decide on the exact specifications you require in a wardrobe. It’s important to go for a wardrobe that suits your needs. Otherwise, you’ll soon find yourself frustrated with the lack of space and ineffectively organised clothes.

Sizing

The best way to work out the correct sizing of your wardrobe is to measure the maximum amount of space you have available in the room. A lot of people forget to take the thickness of the skirting boards into account when measuring, which can cause difficulties when furniture arrives. This is important because the bottom of the wardrobe is where it is widest.

If you have a sloped roof, you will need to take this into consideration when measuring the height allowance of the room. As loft conversions have become a popular way of utilising extra space, this problem is becoming ever more common.

Lastly, make sure you have enough room to open the doors of your wardrobe. This is easily overlooked and could cause embarrassment when you first try to use your new furniture.

Other considerations

There are a number of other factors to take into consideration which are largely a matter of preference. Consider whether you would prefer a free-standing or fitted wardrobe, and the type of materials that would work well with your décor.
