This is the completed cd package design for a recent client- he was very happy with the design. I discussed the project with the client beforehand to make sure we were on the same page in terms of what kind of design he wanted, we also discussed his artistic goals for the cd design (how did he want to present himself to his fans). After our discussions I had a good grasp on the art direction and I had developed some ideas for the cover art. This client was particular about having an electric guitar on the cover design. He also wanted a design element on the cover the conveyed two worlds or two sides of a spectrum, because he had a collection of songs that were positive and jovial and he also had songs that were somber and pessimistic. I started off by designing the cd cover, once he approved the cover design- I continued the project by designing the rest of panels (8 panel insert, traycard, and disc). Together we came up with a design the client was very happy with and we were proud of.

The additional storage that Blu-Ray discs provide is a big plus for director Louis Leterrier:

So on the Blue-ray I’m trying to put as much of the stuff… I want to put everything we shot, you know? I’m not the kind of guy that likes to keep the stuff for myself. I’m like, okay you student filmmakers, here’s what I did right and here’s what I did wrong and in some of the stuff, in the 70 minutes, there’s some great stuff and there’s some really horrible stuff, but you’ll see it all, you know?

There will be over 3 hours of behind the scenes footage. The film itself weighs in at 107 minutes. And keep your eye out for a Caption America Easter Egg somewhere in the movie.

Best Buy VP Gary Arnold weighs in on ProPack CD sleeve packaging and music consumer trends in retail.

Big box retailers–Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, etc.–now have 65% of the market for printed music CDs, and downloads. Record stores, like bookstores, are a threatened species.

Downloads and iPod enthusiam notwithstanding, CDs still account for 85% of music sales. But CD sales have dropped 20%, challenging for printers of related packaging and liner notes. Industry leaders include Cinram, which took over the former Sony media production business; and MeadWestvaco’s AGIMedia.

Big retailers can no longer sell CDs at list prices of $15.99 and up, notes a report in the Wall St. Journal. Best Buy VP Gary Arnold tells the paper today that consumers think of CDs as $10 commodities. Recording studios should release no-frills packages for CDs following a “paperback book model” and more elaborate packages for die-hard fans.*

American Idol was on in the background last night when I heard a name and voice that sounded familiar. It took a moment but then it hit me - it was Luke Menard from Chapter 6, a band we’ve worked with for many years.

I think it was back in 2001 when Luke first contacted us with a CD replication project for his a capella group Chapter 6. Not too long after, Luke called us again with a Christmas CD release, and then a re-order of the first project. Later there was a live DVD. Then more re-orders. This was all before Chapter 6’s biggest release, Swing Shift - a true vocal tour de force.

I can tell you from personal experience that Luke is not only a very talented vocalist, but a stand-up guy as well. The authenticity he showed in front of the American Idol judges is a true representation of the man himself. We wish him all the best as the field narrows further. Luke certainly has our vote for the next American Idol.

Now back to my Folgers and Krispy Kreme (inside joke). Go Luke Go!

Next week it will be made official by Toshiba. An unnamed source inside the company states:

“We have entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business,” said the source, who asked not to be identified. He added that an official announcement could come as early as next week.

This all follows on the heels of Netflix, Best Buy, and Wal-Mart putting their retail muscle exclusively behind the blu-ray format. A substantial price cut of Toshiba’s HD DVD players was too little too late. Scrapping production of their players and leaving the industry will cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars.
