As the days passed, I watched her pick up songs and try new activities—archery was her favorite. Her cabinmates became her best friends as they planned their free time together. Their friendships were sealed after a cabin cookout, as every girl marked her face with charcoal and shared giggles. They became sisters—friends for life.

What struck me most was Jayne’s growing thirst for God. Each day she did her Morning Watch and looked forward to sharing during Bible Exploration. I was so happy she had received a scholarship to attend camp. Her dad had been laid off and— without a scholarship—Jayne would have missed this life-changing week.

When I spoke with her mom after Jayne’s week at camp, Susan* said she didn’t even recognize her daughter. Jayne’s priorities for the things of God had changed. Jayne continued to do her Morning Watch every day and had “grown up,” taking on responsibilities at home that she had avoided prior to camp. She truly was a new person. I received personal proof of the transformation—a thank-you card from Jayne sharing how much she treasured her entire Camp Cedarbrook experience.

You can make a difference in the life of a girl like Jayne. Your contribution of $500 will send one girl to camp for one week. A donation of $80 will pay for her bus fare one way. No matter the amount, your gift will help a girl grow in faith, meet friends who love the Lord, and have the time of her life.

We want to accept every girl who applies for a scholarship, but can’t do so without your help. Consider prayerfully how you can make this life-changing experience possible. Your gift makes all the difference.

Dianne "Tigger" Liddy

The Power of Camp Movement

Camp Cedarbrook in the Adirondacks is part of a movement of Christian camps around the country reaching 5.5 million campers a year. The Power of Camp is so important to spread to as many children as possible so that we can reach each child with the amazing experience that is CAMP! Summer 2015 is quickly approaching! In fact, in this bitter cold, summer is something to think about to keep you warm! I am so excited for Summer 2015 and the opportunities and great experiences it will bring. This summer Camp Cedarbrook hopes to reach dozens of girls and impact their lives in a deep and meaningful way. Camp Cedarbrook gives girls opportunities to grow in their relationship with Christ, grow closer to the beautiful and great outdoors, become part of a wonderful community of Christians, and learn new skills that will last a lifetime. I hope this summer that many new girls will come to camp. Sometimes camp is the only place girls will hear about the gospel of Christ! I hope this summer is truly life changing for both new girls and our the veterans!

So many people have been impacted by camp. Ask any one at camp about their story of how camp has impacted their life. But I wanted to share the story of how camp has impacted my life. I first heard about Camp Cedarbrook during a night when staff members were visiting my church to tell girls about camp. A couple from my church sponsored me to go to camp for a week. Little did they know the impact they would have on my life, because I never stopped going to camp. My summers from then on were filled with faith and friends and camp was a place where I felt accepted and loved, by both campers and staff. Now that I have been on staff for 11 years, I love to see girls coming to camp and how much it has impacted their lives. They have grown in confidence, in acceptance of others and in kindness. These campers have gained skills and knowledge that they are always excited to share with anyone who will ask. I imagine that similar to me, they have gained a group of friends and family that will last a lifetime. I couldn't imagine my life without camp.

Here are two great articles we recommend for parents to read who are interested in sending their child to camp.
5 Good Reasons to Send Your Child to Camp
What Parents are Worrying About? You'll Be Surprised!

The Power of Camp is a campaign of the Christian Camp and Conference Association.

Camp for Christmas! Honestly, there wasn't much purpose to tromping through the muddy swamp except to say that you did it...and boy wass it worth it! I remember girls proudly returning to the division, parading their muddied socks like trophies. It was truly a feat.

Anyway, in this particular instance as we prepared for our trek through the swamp, our counselor warned us to truly stomp if we didn't want to lose our shoes in mud holes. As she went around and duct taped each of our shoes to our feet, I recall one girl who decided against the duct tape. She must not have realized out sticky the mud was, but what was even more appalling wass that she was wearing crocs! (Crocs were all the rage at the time, outside and inside camp for us little ones and were actually kind of pricey). Even worse, these weren't just crocs, they were her friend's crocs!

Regardless, we began our adventure and approximately three steps in, Crocs Girl is freaking out: her shoe had become one with the swamp. Everyone knew that she wasn't getting that shoe back (mostly because the counselor had warned us about a hundred times that if we weren't careful and lost our shoe, there would be no way to find it). In spite of the warnings, we all stopped and started aimlessly reaching through the murky water into layers of mud.

As we franticly searched, the group started to accept that the shoe was a lost cause. But when I stepped in another mud sink hole I pulled my foot out with a *slurp* and thought I'd reach in just to check. My hand went in through the mud and as felt around, I latched on to the shoe and pulled it out with a triumphant "huzzah!"

Through the cheers and "good job!"s I felt like pretty much the superhero of the division. In bigger and better, you'll need teams of any size that all start with the same valueless object. At camp, we usually use a stick or a rock. The team's goal is to trade their object for something slightly better and slightly better until they end with something much bigger or better than what they began with.

For example, a stick could fairly easily be traded for something like a partially used pencil or a lollipop or a penny. That, in turn, could be traded with someone for a pen or a candy bar, which could be traded for a candle or a box of matches, etc. etc. At camp, we usually offer to trade back at the end (which means that bigger and better items come about fairly readily).

At the end of the game (a pre-specified time to meet back at the original location), each team presents their final item to a panel of judges who decide which is the biggest or best item and crown the winner. We've had final items including ponies, rowboats, and golf carts.

What's the best thing you've gotten in bigger or better?

Orange Cake

This is a fun campfire recipe to see, and it tastes delicious!

Cut the top off of an orange, but don't throw it away. Scoop out all of the insides (and eat them- waste not!) until you only have the cup-shaped rind. Put in cake batter (whatever flavor you want, from a mix is fine) until it's about 3/4 full and use the top piece of the orange to close it. Wrap the whole thing in aluminum foil and stick it in the hot coals to cook (anywhere from 15-30 minutes, depending on how hot your fire is). Then take apart your orange and enjoy! The peel keeps the cake nice and moist and gives it a little bit of a citrus kick!

Photo by Alice Carrier, via flickr.

Counselor Dress Up

Easily the most popular cabin time activity at camp is dragging your counselor to the costume closet to dress her up. Depending on the personality of the cabin, she can be dressed as a princess or as a hideous beast, complete with makeup or facepaint or a mask.

One year, we did a counselor dress up with our Counselor in Leadership Training and our counselor. We, for whatever reason, didn't actually plan to go to the costume closet, however. Instead, we decided to make what we called "The It". We tied the two of them together at the waist with a piece of rope, then draped and taped towels all around them so they looked like a two headed beast. We made cones out of construction paper and used them as beaks and horns, and considered our work done. The poor counselors had to sit through an entire meal, eating one handed and sitting practically on the same chair. They were good sports, and we (of course) thought it was hilarious.

What's your best counselor dress up story?

It's Cheese

Today's camp song is repetitive at best, long and annoying at worst, but definitely a lot of fun to sing at the top of your lungs. I'm sure every camp has their own variation on the rules, but here's how the Cedarbrook women play:

It's Counselors vs. Campers in an epic game of hide and go seek/tag. In the middle of the playing area stands a large can, guarded no closer than 10 feet away by counselors. The campers are given a few minutes to scatter in the playing area before the counselors start chasing. The objective for the counselors is to tag all of the campers and put them all in jail. The objective for the campers is to stay free as long as possible. Jail can be freed if the can is kicked over (though be careful- as soon as you leave jail, you can be tagged and put right back in!).

It's fun for both the counselors and the staff, though sometimes it can get a little too competitive.

What's your favorite camp game?

Puppy Chow

You may think certain things aren't possible to cook over a campfire- but just about anything can be!

Today we'll share how to make puppy chow over a campfire, the popular Chex snack!

You will need:

Water

Rice chex (9 cups)

Chocolate chips (1 cup)

Peanut butter (1/2 cup)

Powdered Sugar (1.5 cups)

In order to melt the chocolate without burning it, we recommend fashioning a "double burner" by placing a pan or pot of hot water underneath the pan or pot with the chocolate chips in it. Heat the chocolate chips until melted (stirring continually- you'll need more than one person to have enough hands for all of this).

Add the peanut butter and stir until they are mixed well. Add the cereal and stir until it is covered in chocolate and peanut butter.

Put all the sugar in a gallon ziplock bag, pour in the coated cereal, and shake until the sugar coats the Chex as well. The girls are supposed to be able to, with only one match, light a fire that burns for 10 minutes (and that they can roast a marshmallow over). If the fire goes out or the match does not light, they must deconstruct their fire (remove all the wood) and start again.

I was never one of the girls who liked to play with or build fires for fun, even at camp. I knew the basic technique, but I had very little practice, so I was terrified of the one match fire. I'd practiced some that summer because I knew it was coming, but I still felt ill-prepared.

When the time finally came, there were gray skies, but it wasn't raining yet. I carefully arranged my large wood (known as fuel) in an A-frame and put a sizable pile of tinder and birchbark pieces in the middle. We don't use paper to start fires at camp, if we can help it. I struck the match on a rock and it lit! I quickly lit my birchbark and tinder from the bottom, like I'd been taught, and watched a tiny flame erupt.

I'd been so worried about starting the fire I hadn't really thought through what came next. I started grabbing pieces of kindling and throwing them on top of my little flame. It managed to keep burning for 10 minutes- but it wasn't pretty. Instead of trying to spread the fire onto my larger logs, I just continually added small sticks for 10 minutes until I had a ridiculous looking pile of burnt twigs in the middle and three pristine logs on the outside. I passed the requirement, so I felt accomplished, but don't worry, my fire building skills have improved dramatically since then.

Doodly Doo

Today's song has motions- find an experienced camper and have her teach you!

Please play for me that sweet melody
Called Doodly Doo, Doodly Doo
I like to know wherever I go
It's Doodly Doo, Doodly Doo
It's the simplest thing there isn't much to it
All you gotta do is Doodly Doo it
I like to know wherever I go
It's Doodly Doodly Doo (Toot Toot!)

Wally atcha Wally atcha
Wally-o, Wally-o
Wall atcha, Wally atcha
Wally-o, Wally-o
It's the simplest thing there isn't much to it
All you gotta do is Doodly Doo it
I like to know wherever I go
It's Doodly Doodly Doo (Toot Toot!)

Four on a Couch

This is a challenging and fun game for larger groups.

It is essentially a memory game. The object of this game is to get 4 members of your team on the designated "couch" (or just a section of 4 chairs).

To start, have everyone sit down in a circle (incuding the 4 "couch" seats) alternating teams (we usually have a ribbon in the hair or something to designate the different teams). This means that two of the 4 designated seats on the couch belong to your team and two belong to the other. Remember the objective is to get the other team out of those seats and your team into them.

Write everyone playing the game's name on a card and have everyone pull a name out of a hat. Everyone has a different name in their hand (it doesn't matter if it is their own name). Once everyone is seated and has a name the game can begin.

You will need one empty chair. Whoever is to the right of that empty place has the opportunity to ask someone to come sit next to him. They will call the name of someone in the circle- but the person holding that name card (likely not the actual person) will get up and move to the empty seat. The first several people will just guess a name because they do not yet know who holds what name cards. For example, if the empty seat is next to you and you call the name Emily... the person with the name Emilyon their card gets up... NOT the person whose name is actually Emily. Once this "so-called Emily" comes and sits next to you, you switch name papers. Now YOU have become Emily and the person who sat next to you has the name you had (which only you know because no one has seen it but you).

Now everyone knows that you are Emily. There is an empty space where the girl who just sat next to you used to sit. So the person to the right of the empty seat calls another name (Sarah). The person with that name on their card moves to that spot and switches cards with the caller. You now know that the caller's name is Sarah. You just keep doing this until eventually you call the name (on the card) of someone on the couch and they have to vacate their coveted position.

If the person to the right of the empty spot is on the couch, they will want call someone from their team up to join them. They will have to try to remember names from before of people on their team.
You may not call the same name twice in a row.

Once all four people on the couch are from the same team, that team wins!

Any favorite camp games we should cover for the last 10 days of this series? In the beginning of the week swim test, I was given a red, which meant I could only "swim" in water up to 3 feet deep. Even though I knew I couldn't swim very far, I still wanted to go to the beach during my free time and play around in the red section. The problem was, most of my friends were blue or gold swimmers, and they didn't want to be stuck buddied up with a red swimmer in the red section.

One day during free time I was sitting by the tuck shop, crying because I couldn't go swimming by myself, when one of the older girls who worked in the kitchen saw me. She asked why I was crying and offered to swim with me. She was definitely not a red swimmer, and it probably wasn't what she would have otherwise chosen to do with her free time, but she went swimming with me anyway. I don't remember her name but I still remember that she had long red hair and I will never forget her sweet act of selflessness from all those years ago.

How has someone shown kindness to you at camp?

Blue Aardvark

Once upon a time, Camp Cedarbrook had a mascot- and it was a blue aardvark. I'm still fuzzy on why we would ever disown such a fantastic mascot, but I digress.

We still celebrate him (her?) by playing a game named after him: Blue Aardvark.

Each person playing will need to have a partner and link elbows. If there is an odd number, the un-partnered one will be "it" (aka the blue aardvark) first. If there is an easy number, one pair will be split up and BOTH will be blue aardvarks.

The pairs will stand in a circle facing in with the blue aardvark in the middle. The goal of the game is not to be the person left as the blue aardvark. In order to stop being the blue aardvark, the blue aardvark must simply link up with a pair. However, the pair can never be more than two people, so the partner on the other side (not linked to the former blue aardvark) must let go and is now the new blue aardvark. This blue aardvark may not link on to a pair immediately neighboring their former pair.

The game goes until the "blue aardvark song" has ended. The song is simply a way to count from 1 to 100, and the person left as the blue aardvark when the count reaches 100 is the last blue aardvark.

There are variations that make the game more complex, but that's the basic idea!

<div class="separator" We weren't all in the same cabin every week, but we saw each other frequently, did activities together, and hung out on the weekends.

Somehow, one of those weeks, we ended up with a broom in our cabin that became a friend. The broom in Walnut cabin was evidently superior to the other brooms around the division, so we named him Bob and counted on him to sweep our floors and keep our cabin clean so that we could win the cabin capers competition.

The problem, of course, was that we had to switch cabins the next week, and Bob didn't come with us. Sweeping was so much harder without Bob, so we sneakily kidnapped him. Soon, there was an all-out Bob war raging across the division, and finding the broom on any given day was tricky at best. By the end of the week, we had tied him to a random team in the woods and were leaving clues for the counselors to help them find the extra broom. I distinctly remember an end of the week cabin photo being taken with Bob as well (though I have no idea what happened to that photo).

What are some camp jokes and harmless pranks you remember?

Telephone Pictionary

This is a very popular game among older campers. Each player will need a stack of small pieces of paper with as many papers as players there are (If there are 12 players, each player needs 12 small pieces of paper- the size of an index card is perfect).

Each player will write a word or phrase on their paper: anything at all. The game can be played with a time limit for each round (usually about 1 minute) or without. After the time has elapsed or everyone has finished, each player will pass their entire stack of papers to the player on their right. That player will read the top card and move the top card to the bottom of the stack. They will then draw a representation of the phrase or word (no words in the picture!).

That player will then pass the stack to the next player, who will only look at the picture on top, move the picture to the bottom of the stack, and write a phrase or word they think the picture represents. The game continues until each player has their own original stack of papers in front of them. Allow players to look at the progression over the course of the game and then share with the group- they're usually very funny!

Banana Boats

Banana boats are another campfire dessert favorite. You will need:

1 banana per person

Aluminum foil

Mini chocolate chips

Mini marshmallows

Peanut butter (if you want)

Leave the peel on the banana, and cut a slit lengthwise down the banana. You my need to scoop out some banana to get all the topping you want in (though I always try to not have to do that). Spread the cut you've made out a bit and stuff in all the chocolate chips, marshmallows, and whatever else you want into the banana. Wrap the banana in aluminum foil and put in the fire until the marshmallows and chocolate chips melt. Eat carefully with a fork- it will be hot!

The Thankful Game

Being a Christian camp, I learned and grew in my faith every year that I was at Camp Cedarbrook in new and different ways.

One summer, a group of older girls had gone on an out of camp canoe trip that had one rough night. They'd been far from shore when a thunderstorm popped up and they had to seek shelter on a small island. It was cold and rainy all night long, but by the time the storm passed it was dark and not safe to continue on. They didn't have enough land to make a fire or even set up a tent.

If you've ever led a camping trip with a group of high school girls, you can imagine the normal amount of complaining that would be happening. Hungry girls getting granola bars for dinner, cold girls huddling together for warmth, wet girls getting wetter.

But somehow, someone initiated a game that came to be known as "The Thankful Game". They went around in a circle saying things they were thankful for, no repeats allowed. They thanked God for everything from each other to their life jackets that were keeping them somewhat warmer.

I've played the thankful game with friends, on the way to work, and during difficult and painful times, to remind me that what God has given me is enough, and instead of complaining or anxiety, I should be giving thanks.

Give it a try!

Flea, Fly, Mosquito

Today's camp song is an echo song as well, where you make a rhythm by slapping your legs and then clapping your hands. It's simple to learn, even for little ones, and it's a fun way to learn everyone's names.

Everyone needs to stand in a circle with one person in the center to start the train. That person will walk up to someone in the circle who they do not know, shake their hand, and introduce themselves. Then, the person in the middle, will jump and cheer the person's name 5 times, followed by shouting "Reverse!" and turn around. The new person grabs hold of the leader's shoulders (in a train) and they go across the circle to someone else. The leader again introduces themselves to someone and whispers that person's name back to the rest of the train. Then the entire train jumps and cheers the new person's name 5 times, followed by "Reverse!", turns around, grabs each other's shoulders, and goes across the circle to find someone else to introduce themselves to. This continues until everyone is in the train.

What's your favorite name game?

Smacos

It's time for one of our all-time favorite campfire recipes... Smacos!

Smacos are a combination of a S'more and a taco, and you can basically put whatever you want in them. They are easy, require no clean up, and are surprisingly delicious.

You will need:

Butter

Mini marshmallows

Tortilla

Chocolate chips

Heavy duty aluminum foil

Other options include:

Cinnamon sugar

Peanut butter

Banana

Whatever you want!

Butter one side of the tortilla and put that side down on the aluminum foil (to keep it from sticking). Then, put whatever you want into your smaco! I personally like to do some peanut butter, mini marshmallows, and chocolate chips. Roll it into a burrito, wrap the aluminum foil around it, and stick it in the fire. You only want it in there long enough to melt the chocolate and marshmallows, which is usually pretty quick. Use tongs to remove it from the fire and enjoy!
