Peppermint is a Linux-based operating system with a strong focus on web apps. It is based on Ubuntu, and was designed for enhanced mobility, efficiency, and ease-of-use.

System Requirements

i386 or derivative processor
192 MB of RAM
4 GB hard drive space

There are two flavors of Peppermint - Peppermint One and Peppermint Ice. The main difference is that Peppermint One uses Mozilla's Prism technology, while Peppermint Ice uses Peppermint Ice SSB [Site Specific Browser]. Also, One uses Firefox, and Ice uses Chromium.

I installed Peppermint Ice on my netbook, and I like it a lot. I did choose Ice over One mainly because I prefer Chromium over Firefox. Also, I was curious about the Peppermint Ice SSB installed on Ice.

If you encounter the 'Your battery might be old or broken' message, there's a solution for that.

You'll need to install gconf-editor, using Software Manager [Menu > Software Manager].
After successfully installing gconf-editor, open a terminal window [Menu > Accessories > LXTerminal].
Type gconf-editor in the terminal
Navigate to the Apps folder
Navigate to the gnome-power-manager sub folder
Navigate to the notify sub folder
Find the setting called "low_capacity"
Remove the tick next to it

So far, I'm impressed with Peppermint Ice, and I'll be using it on my handy-dandy netbook.

Access Your Google Calendar with Thunderbird 3.1

I’ve been using Mozilla Sunbird for quite sometime, and just recently noticed that Mozilla is pulling the plug. Sunbird users are recommended to use Thunderbird 3.1 and the Lightning add-on. To access your Google Calendar, you’ll also need the Provider for Google Calendar add-on.

Thunderbird 3.1 (alt DL) is a great email client that gives you IMAP/POP support, a built-in RSS reader, support for HTML mail, powerful quick search, saved search folders, advanced message filtering, message grouping, labels, return receipts, smart address book LDAP address completion, import tools, and the ability to manage multiple e-mail and newsgroup accounts.

Lightning 1.0b2 (add-on for Thunderbird) lets you manage your daily schedule directly within Thunderbird. Allows managing calendars locally or subscribing to network calendars.

Provider for Google Calendar 0.7 (add-on for Thunderbird) allows bidirectional access to Google Calendar. You need an existing Google Calendar account.

So, first you install Thunderbird 3.1 for your email. Then install the Lightning add-on, for you to have the Calendar function. After that, you’ll need to install the Provider for Google Calendar add-on, for you to access your Google Calendar.

Instructions for Adding Google Calendar:

To access your calendar data, you need to retrieve your private XML URL from the Google Calendar UI. If you are not sure how, follow these steps:

Open your Google Calendar
Click on the Settings link located in the box at the right of the page.
Click on the calendar you want to use with Thunderbird Lightning or Sunbird.
Click on either of the two XML buttons shown at the bottom.

You may now use this url as the Location when clicking File > New > Calendar > On the Network > Google Calendar in Sunbird/Lightning.

If you have more than one calendar in your Google Calendar account, just repeat the above steps for the second account.

Tasks, unfortunately, cannot yet be synced. This would only be possible if Google provides an XML for it.

By selecting appropriate lists of "known bad" computers, you can block communication with advertising or spyware oriented servers, computers monitoring your p2p activities, computers which have been "hacked", even entire countries! They can't get in to your computer, and your computer won't try to send them anything either.

Major Changes:

Fix for List-Download Crash - This should resolve the "PeerBlock randomly crashes / disappears overnight" problems. It had been crashing occasionally, on some people's computers, while checking for updated lists.
Save Failed Lists - If a newly downloaded list fails verification, we'll now save that file as "...\lists\numnumnum.list.failed".
Warn if Exit While Blocking Recently - When you attempt to exit PeerBlock, if we've blocked some non-HTTP packet recently (i.e. within the past 60 seconds), we will pop up a warning message. This 60 second value is configurable by hand-editing peerblock.conf via Notepad - change the RecentBlockWarntime setting from 60 to however many seconds you'd like; 0 disables this feature.
Force PeerBlock to Start Enabled - If PeerBlock was disabled when you last exited it, it will now start as Enabled the next time you restart it.
Allow HTTP for X minutes - The systray right-click menu has two new options: "Allow HTTP for 15 minutes" and "...for 60 minutes". After the specified amount of time has passed, PeerBlock will revert to Blocking HTTP again.
Click on tray icon to minimize window - Previously, left-clicking on the systray icon would merely display the PeerBlock window . . . even if it was previously displayed. Now, if the window is currently displayed left-clicking on the tray-icon will minimize it; and if the window is currently minimized, it will restore it.

PeerBlock is a fork of the PeerGuardian2 software. If you use a computer for downloading via bittorrent, PeerBlock could give it some needed protection.
