issues surrounding data security and privacy.

a number of important questions, including what factors are driving innovation
in big data and fintech? How is China leading the world in terms of fintech?
How will blockchain enable more people access to financial services? What is
acceptable for companies to do with personal data? Is data privacy
really a new issue? How do attitudes towards data privacy vary across different

Professor of Economics and Finance Xu Bin points out that China’s surprising
6.9% growth in 2017 has made it clear that US President Donald Trump’s America
First policy won’t hurt China as much as some may fear. An analysis of the data
shows that the Chinese economy has delinked from the global one, no longer
powered by external forces such as exports and inward FDI. Instead domestic
consumption is the main driving force, pushed along by new technology, a
growing services industry and urbanization. It also helps that China has a
built-in 3S advantage of scale, scope and the newest ‘s’ factor – speed.

Robert Ward, Editorial Director of The
Economist Intelligence Unit, highlights key issues that will affect the global
economy in 2018. In this March 9 address he touches on everything from global
growth, global order, Brexit, US President Donald Trump’s chances of staying in
office, as well as China, India and other emerging markets. Aptly titled “As
Good as it Gets?”, Ward’s presentation is as deep in substance as it is diverse
in the geographies covered. Xu Bin, Professor of Economics and Finance, Wu Jinglian
Chair in Economics, and Associate Dean (Research) at CEIBS follows, and
complements, Ward’s presentation. Prof. Xu provides highlights from his recent
research and original insights on geopolitical and economic analysis. The
session culminates in a Q&A session. Held at the Shanghai Campus of the
China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), the event was organised by
CEIBS Alumni International Chapter (CAIC), their first event since Chinese New
Year. The audience, some of whom joined from Africa and Europe via Facebook
live, included CEIBS MBA and GEMBA students, members of the CEIBS alumni
community, and CEIBS faculty.

In the coming one or two decades CEIBS Vice President and Dean Professor
Ding Yuan predicts we’ll see at least US$ 100 billion in outbound
investment each year from China. What motivates Chinese companies’ global
ambitions? Which deals make sense? What are the challenges in making these
cross-border mergers and acquisitions work?

In a talk recorded at the CEIBS Europe Forum in London on
July 6, 2017, Professor Ding shares some of the findings from more than 30 case
studies done by the CEIBS Centre for the Globalization of Chinese Companies
that explore Chinese outbound investments across a wide range of industries and
countries. As he explains in his talk, when they began their research, the
CEIBS faculty found that the frameworks for globalization followed by Western
multinationals do not apply to Chinese companies going global. Their reasons
for pursuing foreign acquisitions and joint ventures, and the way they manage
them are quite different. He explains the differences and provides some practical examples in this talk.
