Usha Gandhi, also known as Usha Gokani, was the granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader who guided India’s freedom movement through non-violence and truth. She belonged to the family line of Ramdas Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s third son.

Usha was born into a family deeply connected with India’s independence struggle. Her grandfather, Mahatma Gandhi, and grandmother, Kasturba Gandhi, played a major role in shaping the country’s history.

She spent part of her childhood at Sevagram Ashram in Wardha. The ashram was founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1936 and became the center of many important freedom movement activities. Life at the ashram was simple. People woke up early, did manual work, and followed strict routines. This environment helped shape Usha’s values from a young age.

Her parents were Ramdas Gandhi and Nirmala Gandhi. Ramdas was involved in the freedom movement and often joined his father in protests and campaigns. Usha also had two siblings: Sumitra Gandhi Kulkarni, who later became a member of the Rajya Sabha, and Kanu Ramdas Gandhi, who worked as a scientist.

Growing up in such a historic family meant that Usha was always close to the legacy of her grandfather.

Connection to Gandhian Ideals

Like many members of the Gandhi family, Usha believed strongly in the ideas her grandfather promoted. These ideas included truth, peace, simple living, and service to society.

Living at Sevagram Ashram helped her understand these values in daily life. People at the ashram worked together, shared tasks, and helped the community. This spirit of cooperation stayed with her throughout her life.

Although she did not seek public attention, she remained connected with organizations that spread Gandhian philosophy.

Work with Gandhi Smarak Nidhi

Usha Gandhi played an important role in preserving the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. She served as the chairperson of Gandhi Smarak Nidhi in Mumbai.

The organization is based at Mani Bhavan, an important place in India’s freedom struggle. Mahatma Gandhi stayed there many times between 1917 and 1934. During those years, the house became a center for meetings, planning, and discussions related to the independence movement.

Gandhi Smarak Nidhi was created to promote Gandhian values and social work. It began operating in 1955. Under Usha’s leadership, the organization continued to support educational and constructive activities inspired by Gandhi’s teachings.

Her work helped keep the message of non-violence and social responsibility alive for new generations.

Efforts to Promote Gandhi’s Legacy

Even in her later years, Usha Gandhi remained interested in projects connected with her grandfather’s legacy.

In 2015, she took part in discussions about developing Gandhi Hill, a well-known memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. The site is an important place where people learn about Gandhi’s life and ideas.

During this effort, Usha shared her views on how Gandhian values could still guide society today. She believed that peace, truth, and service were still relevant in the modern world.

Family and Personal Life

Usha Gandhi married into the Gokani family and was also known as Usha Gokani. She maintained a private life and stayed mostly away from media attention.

She had two sons, Anant and Sanjay. Through them, the Gandhi family lineage continued into the next generation. Anant’s children, Karan and Arjun, are among the great-grandchildren connected to the wider Gandhi family tree.

Her brother Kanu Ramdas Gandhi also had a notable connection to history. As a young boy, he walked ahead of Mahatma Gandhi during the famous Salt March, one of the most important protests against British rule.

Later Years and Passing

In her later life, Usha Gandhi faced health problems and had been ill for several years. She was bedridden for the final two years of her life.

She passed away in Mumbai in March 2023 at the age of 89. Her death marked the loss of a member of the Gandhi family who had lived close to the ideals and history of India’s freedom movement.

Childhood at the Ashrams

Sumitra spent her early years at Sabarmati Ashram and later at Sevagram Ashram near Wardha. Life at the ashram was simple and strict.

Everyone followed a routine. People woke up early, did chores, spun cotton, and attended prayer meetings. Children were taught to respect hard work and live without luxury.

Sumitra shared a warm bond with her grandfather. Gandhi often wrote postcards to her. In some of them, he advised her to improve her handwriting and study well.

In 1948, when Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated, Sumitra was 19 years old. She was studying at Banaras Hindu University at the time. Her father, Ramdas Gandhi, later performed the last rites and lit Gandhi’s funeral pyre.

Her work showed her dedication to public duty and governance.

However, in 1972, she decided to leave the IAS. She stepped into politics after encouragement from Indira Gandhi.

Political Career

After leaving the IAS, Sumitra Gandhi entered politics. She became a member of the Indian National Congress.

In 1972, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India’s Parliament. She represented the state of Gujarat and served until 1978.

During the period of The Emergency (India 1975–1977), she became disappointed with political developments. Later, she joined Congress for Democracy, which eventually merged with the Janata Party.

Even after active politics, she continued speaking about the importance of Gandhian values in public life.

Marriage and Family

Sumitra Gandhi married Professor G. R. Kulkarni, a respected academic and one of the founding faculty members of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.

They have three children:

A Memorable Moment During the Salt March

One of the most famous moments from Kanu Gandhi’s childhood happened during the Salt March, also known as the Dandi March.

In 1930, Mahatma Gandhi led thousands of people on a long walk to protest British salt laws. During this historic march, young Kanu was seen walking close to his grandfather.

Some well-known photographs show the small boy moving ahead on the beach at Dandi while Gandhi walked with his stick. These images became powerful symbols of the freedom movement.

The pictures also showed the close bond between the young boy and his famous grandfather.

Education and Move to the United States

Kanu Gandhi was known as a bright student. He was interested in science and engineering from an early age.

In the 1950s, he moved to the United States to continue his education. Some reports say that he was selected for higher studies with the support of American economist and diplomat John Kenneth Galbraith.

He was connected to studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the world’s top universities for science and engineering.

This move helped shape his future career in aerospace research.

Career as an Aerospace Scientist

Unlike many members of the Gandhi family who entered politics or social work, Kanu Gandhi chose a different path.

He became a scientist and aerospace engineer. His work focused on aircraft technology, especially the design of wing structures for fighter planes.

During his professional career, he worked with important American institutions, including:

NASA

The United States Department of Defense

His research helped improve aircraft performance and safety. Even though he belonged to a very famous family, Kanu preferred a quiet life focused on science and research.

Personal Life

Kanu Gandhi married Shivalaxmi Gandhi. The couple lived a simple life and followed many of the values that Mahatma Gandhi believed in, such as modest living and honesty.

They did not have children, so this branch of the Gandhi family did not continue through direct descendants.

Kanu stayed mostly away from politics and public attention. He chose to live privately rather than use his family name for fame or power.

Later Years and Difficult Times

In his later years, Kanu Gandhi faced financial difficulties. Despite being the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, he lived a modest life.

For some time, he and his wife stayed in Guru Vishram Vruddha Ashram, an old-age home in Delhi. Their situation surprised many people because they were connected to one of the most respected figures in Indian history.

Still, Kanu continued to live quietly without seeking publicity.

Death and Legacy

In October 2016, Kanu Gandhi suffered a heart attack and brain hemorrhage in Surat, Gujarat. The medical emergency left him in a coma.

He passed away on November 7, 2016, at the age of 87 in a private hospital in Surat.

Although he did not live a public political life, Kanu Gandhi remains part of the historic Gandhi family legacy. His life showed that not every member of the family followed the path of activism. Instead, he chose the world of science and research.

Today, he is remembered as the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi who quietly built a career in aerospace science while living a simple and humble life.

Who is Hemjeet Kaur?

Hemjeet Kaur is the younger sister of star all-rounder and India captain Harmanpreet Kaur. Unlike her famous sibling, Hemjeet maintains a low profile away from media spotlight. She has been a pillar of emotional support for Harmanpreet throughout her career.

Family History

Harmanpreet Kaur is a sports-loving family. Her father was a budding cricketer. He also played volleyball and basketball. Her father was a clerk in a judicial court. Harmanpreet’s father was her first coach, teaching her the basics of cricket and encouraging her to follow her dreams. Her mother is Satwinder Kaur, a homemaker. She has always been there for Harmanpreet, providing her with love and support.

Hemjeet’s parents are proud of their children’s success. While Harmanpreet became a cricket star, Hemjeet lived her life behind the scenes. She is married and has children, which makes her an important part of the family.

father Harmandar Singh Bhullar

Hemjeet’s Personal Life

Hemjeet Kaur is married with two children. She has a son, Aryan, who is training to become a cricket player. Evidently, cricket is a love affair within the family. Just as her sister Harmanpreet, Aryan has an interest in the sport. The daughter of Hemjeet also belongs to the family; however, not much about her is revealed to the public.

Even though Hemjeet is busy with her family, she still supports her sister in her career. Harmanpreet often talks about the love and encouragement she gets from her family. Hemjeet’s support has helped Harmanpreet become the strong and confident person she is today.

The Supportive Sister

Although Hemjeet Kaur is not as famous as her sister, her support has been essential to Harmanpreet’s success. As the elder sister, Hemjeet has always been there for Harmanpreet. While giving interviews, Harmanpreet has often talked about how important family support was to her. Be it the time of training or that of dealing with problems, her family was always present with her.

She had much learning to absorb from her father who trained her and from her mother, who took care of the family. Hemjeet must have also helped guide Harmanpreet through all those tough times, as the older sibling. Siblings do share something very special, and Hemjeet and Harmanpreet clearly do.

Harmanpreet’s Rise to Fame

Harmanpreet Kaur’s journey to becoming a cricket star is inspiring. She has faced numerous challenges, but with the support of her family, she has overcome them. From playing cricket in her backyard to representing India on the international stage, Harmanpreet has made her mark. She is now one of the top women cricketers in the world.

While Harmanpreet shines on the field, Hemjeet remains an important figure in the background. Her support, love, and encouragement have helped Harmanpreet get where she is today.

Alysa Liu (born on August 8, 2005) is an American competitive figure skater. At such a young age, she has already impacted the figure skating scene profoundly due to her accomplishments. One of her most famous achievements includes being the youngest U.S. women’s national champion in figure skating. She became the youngest winner of the Championship (14 years old) after breaking Tara Lipinski’s record set in 1997 at the tender age of 13.

Her success only grew as she won her first U.S. national title in 2019 and achieved “champion” again in 2020. Winning two senior national titles by age 14 made her the youngest skater to ever accomplish this. Liu’s international career has not lagged behind, claiming her 2025 World champion title and 2022 World bronze medalist. Additionally, she has won multiple ISU Challenger events like the 2021 Nebelhorn Trophy and Lombardia Trophy.

Besides her national and international titles, Liu has made history with her jumping capabilities. She is the first American woman to successfully execute a quadruple jump and the first woman to simultaneously do a quadruple jump and a triple Axel in the same performance. Her artistry and skating technique have made her one of the best competitors in the figure skating world. Liu participated in the 2022 Winter Olympics at the age of 16 and placed sixth, which, considering her age and level of experience, was an astounding feat.

Liu is now still a top contender in American figure skating and continues to motivate young skaters while balancing her education at UCLA and her skating career.

As of March 2026, Alysa Liu is 20 years and 7 months old. Her estimated net worth is $400 thousand, and she is 5 feet 3 inches (161 cm or 1.61 m) tall.

After her retirement from competitive figure skating in 2022, Alysa Liu began appearing at public events and figure skating exhibitions. These include:

Since Liu is vocal about her journey with body image and the pressures of elite sports, she has become a relatable voice for young athletes and has likely monetized that through selective speaking engagements.

4. Media Features and Collaborations – Estimated $10,000–$20,000

Liu has been featured in major media outlets like:

Teen Vogue

She has also participated in Olympic-related documentaries and interviews, particularly around the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. Athletes featured in such content sometimes receive appearance fees or royalties depending on the production.

Moreover, as a public figure with growing social media influence (Instagram and other platforms), there’s potential for Alysa to earn through paid collaborations with lifestyle, wellness, or skating brands—though she has remained relatively low-key online.

5. Support & Funding from U.S. Figure Skating and Sponsors – Estimated $20,000–$50,000

Elite American figure skaters often receive financial support from:

U.S. Figure Skating Federation

Sponsors like Toyota or Deloitte (Olympic partners)

This support covers training, travel, costumes, coaching, and even housing in some cases. While not direct income, it reduces out-of-pocket expenses significantly and allows athletes to pursue their sport full-time.

High Expenses: The Reality Behind the Earnings

Despite these income sources, it’s important to understand that figure skating is one of the most expensive Olympic sports.
A Special Memory With Her Grandfather

Ela Gandhi met her grandfather when she was seven years old. In 1946–1947, she traveled with her family to India. During this visit, she spent several months with him at Sevagram Ashram.

At that time, India was going through a difficult period. The country was close to independence, but tensions were rising before the Partition of India.

Despite the serious situation, Ela had warm memories of her grandfather. He once wrote her a letter advising her to practice silence. He believed quiet reflection could help her balance her lively and talkative nature.

Education and Early Work

Ela Gandhi later focused on education and social service. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Natal, now part of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

She continued her studies and completed an honors degree in social science from the University of South Africa.

After finishing her studies, Ela worked as a social worker. She helped people in black townships and Indian communities. Many families faced poverty and unfair treatment during that time. Her work focused on helping those who needed support the most.

Fight Against Apartheid

South Africa was under the system of Apartheid for many years. This system treated people differently based on race.

Ela Gandhi joined the struggle against apartheid while she was still young. At the age of twelve, she took part in the Defiance Campaign.

Her activism brought many challenges. The apartheid government placed restrictions on her activities. She also faced arrests and bans. Even with these difficulties, she continued her work for justice and equality.

Ela always believed in peaceful change. Her approach followed the same principle of nonviolence that her grandfather taught.

Political Career in South Africa

After apartheid ended, South Africa became a democracy. Ela Gandhi then entered politics to help rebuild the country.

She joined the African National Congress, the party that played a key role in ending apartheid.

From 1994 to 2004, Ela served as a Member of Parliament representing Phoenix in KwaZulu-Natal. During her time in parliament, she worked on issues such as welfare, justice, and social development.

She also took part in committees that looked at public services and community support programs.

Community Work and Peace Efforts

Ela Gandhi has always believed that real change starts in communities. She founded the Gandhi Development Trust.

This organization promotes peace education, conflict resolution, and social development. It also works to reduce violence and encourage dialogue between communities.

She also helped start a 24-hour program that supports victims of domestic violence. This program provides help and protection for people facing abuse.

Ela later served as Chancellor of the Durban University of Technology, where she supported education and youth leadership.

Awards and Recognition

Ela Gandhi’s work has received recognition around the world. In 2007, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Bhushan.

She also received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman in 2014. This award honors people of Indian origin who have made important contributions abroad.
