Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope

The Beach (gabrielle giffords)

I used to be able to tell just what my wife, Gabby, was thinking.

I could sense it in her body language—the way she leaned forward when she was intrigued by someone and wanted to soak up every word being said; the way she nodded politely when listening to some know-it-all who had the floor; the way she’d look at me, eyes sparkling, with that full-on smile of hers, when she wanted me to know she loved me. She was a woman who lived in the moment—every moment.

Gabby was a talker, too. She was so animated, using her hands as punctuation marks, and she’d speak with passion, clarity, and good humor, which made her someone you wanted to listen to. Usually, I didn’t have to ask or wonder what she was thinking. She’d articulate every detail. Words mattered to her, whether she was speaking about immigration on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, or whether she was alone with me, talking about her yearning to have a child.

Gabby doesn’t have all those words at her command anymore, at least not yet. A brain injury like hers is a kind of hurricane, blowing away some words and phrases, and leaving others almost within reach, but buried deep, under debris or in a different place. “It’s awful,” Gabby will say, and I have to agree with her.

But here’s the thing: While Gabby struggles for words, coping with a constant frustration that the rest of us can’t fathom, I still know what she’s thinking much of the time. Yes, her words come haltingly or imperfectly or not at all, but I can still read her body language. I still know the nuances of that special smile of hers. She’s still contagiously animated and usually upbeat, using her one good hand for emphasis.

And she still knows what I’m thinking, too.

There’s a moment that Gabby and I are going to hold on to, a moment that speaks to our new life together and the way we remain connected. It was in late April 2011, not quite four months after Gabby was shot in the head by a would-be assassin. As an astronaut, I had just

spent five days in quarantine, awaiting the last launch of space shuttle Endeavour, which I’d be commanding. It was around noon on the day before the scheduled liftoff, and my five crew members and I had been given permission to see our spouses for a couple of hours, one

last time.

We’d be meeting with our wives on the back deck of this old, rundown two-story Florida beach house that NASA has maintained for decades. It is on the grounds of the Kennedy Space Center, and there’s even a sign at the dirt road leading to it that simply says “The Beach House.” The house used to have a bed that astronauts and their significant others would use for unofficial “romantic reunions.” Now it’s just a meeting place for NASA managers, and by tradition, a gathering spot where spouses say their farewells to departing astronauts, hoping they’ll see them again. Twice in the space shuttle’s thirty-year history, crews did not make it home from their missions. And so after a meal and some socializing as a group, couples usually break away and take private walks down the desolate beach, hand in hand.

The 2,000-square-foot house is the only structure on the oceanfront for more than twenty-five miles, since NASA controls a huge chunk of Florida’s “space coast.” Look in any direction and there’s nothing but sand, seagulls, an occasional sea turtle, and the Atlantic Ocean. It’s Florida pretty much the way it was centuries ago.

On our previous visit to this spot, the day before my shuttle mission in May 2008, Gabby and I were newlyweds, sitting in the sand, chatting about the mission, her upcoming election, and our future together. Gabby reminded me of how very “blessed” we both were; she often said that. She felt we needed to be very thankful for everything that we had. And we were.

The biggest problem on our minds was finding time to see each other, given our demanding careers in separate cities. It seemed complicated then, the jigsaw puzzle that was our lives, but in retrospect, it was so simple and easy. We couldn’t have imagined that we’d return for a launch three years later and everything would be so different.

This time, Gabby entered the beach house being pushed in a wheelchair, wearing a helmet to protect the side of her head where part of her skull was missing. It had been removed during the surgery that saved her life after she was shot.

While the others at the house had come in pairs (each astronaut with a spouse), Gabby and I showed up with this whole crazy entourage—her mother, her chief of staff, a nurse, three U.S. Capitol Police officers, three Kennedy Space Center security officers, and a NASA colleague assigned to look after Gabby for the duration of my mission. The support Gabby now needed was considerable, and certainly not what my fellow crew members expected in their final moments with their wives. Instead of an intimate goodbye on a secluded beach, this became quite the circus. It was a bit embarrassing, but the men on my crew and their spouses were 100 percent supportive.

They understood. Gabby had just logged sixteen arduous and painful weeks sequestered in a Tucson hospital and then a Houston rehab center. She had worked incredibly hard, struggling to retrain her brain and fight off depression over her circumstances. For her doctors and security detail to give their blessings and allow her to travel, this was how her coming-out needed to be handled.

My crewmates and their wives greeted Gabby warmly, and she smiled at all of them, and said hello, though it was clear she was unable to make real small-talk. Some words and most sentences were still beyond her. Everyone was positive, but everyone noticed.

As I watched Gabby try to navigate the social niceties, I was very proud of her. She had learned since her injury that it could sap her energy and her spirits to be self-conscious about her deficiencies or her appearance. So she had found ways to communicate by employing upbeat hand motions and that terrific smile of hers—the same smile that had helped her connect with constituents, woo political opponents, and get my attention. She didn’t need to rattle off sentences to charm a bunch of astronauts and their wives. She just had to tap into the person she’s always been.

* * *

After we settled in at the beach house, I said to Gabby: “Want to go down to the ocean?”

“Yes,” she said. “Yes, swim in the ocean.”

Though Gabby grew up in Arizona, a daughter of the desert, she loves the ocean more than anyone I’ve ever known. She first saw the Pacific as a kid, traveling with her parents and sister through Mexico and Central America. They’d spend weeks at a time driving up and down the Pacific coast in a station wagon or camper. She loved to swim, to look for shells, to people-watch. Later, the Atlantic became equally alluring for her, including this stretch of beach, where we walked and swam together before my previous space flights. On those visits, Gabby had enjoyed swimming well offshore. And I admired how she engaged the other spouses so they all could shake off their nervousness over the risky missions ahead. She had just the right touch, embracing the duties that came with being the commander’s wife, while also being completely down-to-earth and making everyone feel welcome.

But this time, of course, she was dependent on the kindness of others.

Her nurse took her into the bathroom and got her into her swimsuit. Though it was a warm day, she needed sweatpants and a jacket, since her injury leaves her cold so much of the time. Gabby helped dress herself the best she could, using her left hand, but she was limited. (Because she was shot in the left side of her brain, which partially controls the right side of the body, her right hand remained mostly useless and still, an appendage on her lap.)

When Gabby got out of the bathroom, those assisting her helped her into a special chair that emergency medical crews use when they have to carry people down stairs or out of the wilderness. It took three of them to lug her in that chair through the sand, step by step, a hundred yards toward the ocean. It was low tide, which made for a longer walk. I knew exactly what Gabby was thinking on this awkward journey down from the beach house. She was thinking what I was thinking; how desperately we both longed for the life we used to have together.

When the chair reached the water’s edge, I thanked the men who carried Gabby for their efforts, and they lowered her to the ground. We unstrapped her, and after we helped her to her feet, she was able to navigate the hard, wet sand, taking a few steps, leading slowly with her left leg. That’s when our support team moved back on the beach, trying to keep a respectful distance so Gabby and I could be alone.

In the days immediately after Gabby was injured, I had considered stepping down as commander of this shuttle flight. I was unsure of whether I’d be able to focus completely on the mission, and didn’t know when Gabby would be leaving intensive care. But once she began improving and I returned to training, I found myself fantasizing about the possibility that Gabby would recover enough to join me on this beach on this day—the day before liftoff. That became a goal of ours. Now here we were.

It turned out to be a pretty amazing moment, a gift of serenity at a time when both of us were caught in the brightest of spotlights. The day before, millions of TV viewers had watched grainy, unauthorized footage of Gabby walking slowly and deliberately up a tarmac staircase and onto a plane in Houston to fly here for the launch. It had been taken by a cameraman in a distant, hovering news helicopter. Meanwhile, within twenty-four hours, 700,000 people were expected to descend on central Florida’s east coast to see me and my crew b...

The Simpsons Movie

2012-01-22T21:51:00.000-08:00

The Simpsons Movie features excellent animation, a good plot that moves along very well, great gags and awesome voiceovers by the cast. There are so many gags that there's bound to be jokes in this movie that will amuse just about anyone!

The Simpsons Movie

The action starts when Lake Springfield is practically destroyed by excessive pollution; and so the town must clean it up. They do! Unfortunately, however, things don't stay that way--and there begins the REAL plot of this film. Homer (voiced by Dan Castellaneta) decides to take on a pig for a house pet. When Marge (voiced by Julie Kavner) casually asks Homer what he's doing with the pig's "leavings;" Homer takes Marge out back and shows her his "silo" full of pig "droppings." Marge isn't too happy; and eventually Homer realizes he MUST get rid of the festering silo. Naturally, where does Homer go to get rid of the silo? Lake Springfield! Once again the lake is unbelievably contaminated.

Russ Cargill (voiced by Albert Brooks) is in charge of the EPA and he sets out to rectify the problem. What happens? Springfield is enwrapped by a huge, impenetrable dome--and then wiped off the map. The residents of Springfield are furious at Homer; and sooner rather than later The Simpsons must flee. They go to Alaska in search of freedom from the infuriated residents of Springfield.

Worse yet, Russ Cargill and President Schwarzenegger (voiced by Harry Shearer) hatch a plan to bomb Springfield so that it will never again pose a problem. This really raises the stakes.

From here the plot can go anywhere. What will Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie do? Will they stay in Alaska where it's safe or will they return to Springfield to try to rescue the people there from being killed by the bomb? Will Homer and Marge's marriage be tested by all this strife? What will Bart think of Homer after this all becomes one huge mess? No plot spoilers here, folks--you'll just have to watch the movie to find out!

The animation couldn't be better. I was very impressed by the clarity and the sharpness of the images and colors. The voiceovers were outstanding as well. It seems like Matt Groening, director David Silverman and their crew can do no wrong.

In addition, the DVD comes loaded with a plethora of extras considering this is all on one single DVD. There are several deleted scenes; and there's a very funny but brief extra entitled "Let's All Go To The Lobby." There are two commentaries for you to enjoy if you wish; and there are great gags all the way through the ending credits.

Overall, The Simpsons Movie is definitely one of the best comedies of 2007. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Fans of The Simpsons will want this in their collections; and even people less familiar with The Simpsons television show will find great entertainment and many jokes here!

Liv Tyler's mom Bebe Buell always taught her daughter to be cautious about men -- because of her mom's own reputation of being a rock groupie.

Liv Tyler said: My mom taught me to watch out for men. Be careful when they tell you things. She was never a man basher. She just wanted me to be aware of what may be said and done.

My mom had a reputation which was simply untrue. She was often described as a rock groupie but in fact she is a very moral person who is in love with music.

However, despite her mothers advice on the intentions of men, Liv admitted she is still a romantic at heart.

She said: Im a sucker for romance. Flowers and champagne or dinner being cooked for me.

The 33-year-old star -- who has a six-year-old son Milo with ex-husband Royston Langdon -- also admitted she has never been interesting in partying and would rather spend her money on her home.

She explained to The Sun newspaper: My mom was my manager for a time and was very careful about who I went with and who I met. Im an old fashioned woman, I didnt go to parties and get off with men. I spent my money on furniture rather than on nights out.

Timothy Dalton to Testify Against Mel Gibson?

2011-02-22T08:36:00.000-08:00

Timothy Dalton to Testify Against Mel Gibson?

Before Mel Gibson, Oksana Grigorieva dated James Bond star Timothy Dalton, with whom she also has a child. The two still communicate - about Gibson, in fact.

According to reports, Grigorieva told a lawyer that Dalton will testify against Gibson in their case, revealing potentially damning evidence against the actor.

In the battery and extortion investigations into Gibson and Grigorieva, she alleges he punched her and that "Tim" saw a bruise on her left eye after the fact.

"Tim saw a bruise on my left eye as well as Mady," Oksana said, referring also to her facialist and Dalton, the father of Grigorieva's teenage son Alexander.

"Both will testify," she added, noting: "Facts and witnesses."

If Gibson is charged with domestic abuse, the idea of Dalton - the subject of one of many Mel Gibson rants - testifying in court would make for a spectacle.

The revelations about Dalton, taken from Oksana's emails to an ex-attorney, came a day after we learned her desire to call his bluff and take her chances.

The e-mails, texts and documents uncovered in a Radar Online investigation reveal that over the course of last year, Grigorieva has also claimed:

That a furious Mel once flew from Costa Rica to "spy" on her
That he jealously accused his own friends of hitting on her
That she told two other doctors she was "hit by a man"
That she emailed a lawyer the night Mel allegedly hit her
That she also telephoned three friends - "Jimmy" and "Alicia and Robert Seidler" - the same night, who advised her to call the police
That she told Jimmy Mel was "threatening to come and kill me"

While the Russian musician has battled repeated claims she has changed her version of events, or is trying to bilk Mel for cash, the D.A. will ultimately decide whether her account is credible and what, if any, charges will be filed.

Michael Jackson "Always Around" His Children

Michael Jackson "Always Around" His Children

Michael Jackson is always around his children, even in death.

Their uncle, and MJ's brother, Jackie Jackson explains why.

"They are with their father 24 hours a day," Jackie said of Paris, Prince and Prince II (Blanket). "They have pictures in the bedroom. They talk about him all the time."

"They ask me stories about him. They want to know more about him."

The pop star's kids are "doing really well," Jackie said, adding that Prince wants to be a director one day, while little sister Paris wants to be an actress.

"I told the kids, 'You better get busy, because when we were your age, we were selling out concerts,'" Jackie joked, referring to the famed Jackson 5.

The children have embraced that era of their father's life, with Prince even donning a Jackson 5 shirt to a recent Los Angeles Lakers game with Jackie.

The black shirt is a part of the J5 collection that Michael Jacksons brothers launched using images of the famed band on t-shirts, tank tops and jackets.

Michael's children especially love the shirts, said Jackie: "They like to see us as little kids. We were the same age they are and we were doing our thing."

It's nice that the kids have a strong support system and that for all they have gone through, they appear to be respectful, well-adjusted young people.

Actor John Schneider Selling Short in Agoura Hills

2011-02-22T08:27:00.000-08:00

SELLER: John Schneider
LOCATION: Agoura Hills, CA
PRICE:$2,199,000
SIZE: 6,890 square feet 6 bedrooms, 6 full and 2 half bathrooms

YOUR MAMAS NOTES: Back when Your Mama was knee high to a grasshopper we spent many summers on the family homestead in Nowheresville, CA with our rough, tough and long gone Granny Rayna. Come sundown, there was supper and then an hour or two in front of the boob-toob. Our Granny, an educated woman originally from Bumfuck, Arkansas, watched only three things on her big ol' console tee-vee. The local news, The Lawrence Welk Show and The Dukes of Hazzard, a little ditty about a couple of hotsy-totsy hillbilly ne'er do well cuzzins named Bo an Luke Duke who race around the Georgia backwoods in a muscle car painted up like the damn Confederate flag. Lowerd. Pleeze. A show like that just seems preposterous nowadays, don't it?

One of the Duke cuzzins was a brunette. That would be actor Tom Wopat. The other was a beau-hunky blond perfectly played by beau-hunky actor/stunt man/director/writer/editor/cinematographer/producer John Schneider who, we learned from our informant Juanita Wordspiller, recently heaved his estate in ex-urban and semi-rural Agoura Hills, CA on the market with an asking price of $2,199,000.

Until perusing his resume on the Internet Movie Data Base, Your Mama would have been hard pressed to name a single television program in which Mister Schneider appeared besides The Dukes of Hazzard and a recent multi-episode arc on Desperate Housewives. Turns out and despite a few dips into professional obscurity, Mister Schneider has been a bizzy Tinseltown beaver since his Dukes of Hazzard days. His long list of ack-ting credits include innumerable tee-vee movies and regular longer-term gigs on programs that include Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, Diagnosis Murder, Touched By an Angel, Nip/Tuck and 90210. For the last 10 years he's shook his money maker on Smallville, a program we've never bothered to view that we understand to be based on the Superman story. Mister Schneider's career seems to be on a continued upswing with at least half a dozen projects already in the hopper with specious titles like Snow Beast, Super Shark and October Baby.

Lesser known or maybe not known by many of the children is that Mister Schneider parlayed his popularity as Bo Duke into a successful if not spectacular country music career with at least 10 albums to date and in 1998 he became a born-again (Christian) while living with country music near-deities Johnny and June Carter Cash. We're not entirely sure how that came about but it's kind of intriguing, ain't it?

Anyhoo, moving on to the matter at hand. Property records show Mister Schneider scooped up his faux half-timber Tudor manor house in the rolling hills of Agoura Hills in November of 1999 for $1,250,000.

A short sale means a property is offered or sold for less than the amount the homeowner owes and, according to listing information provided by our dear Juanita, Mister Schneider's property is being marketed as a short sale that's subject to lender approval. That real estate morsel indicates that like so many other folks in the good ol' U.S. of A. during the go-go real estate years in the early naughts, Mister Schneider and his missus Elvira used their Agoura Hills home as an ATM machine and their pocketbooks are now suffering the consequences.

Listing information indicates the Schneiders' spread in Agoura Hills sprawls across 2.67 acres and includes a main house that measures 6,890 square feet with 5 bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms. A guest house provides another sleeping chamber and terliting facility and a detached office includes a reception area and another half pooper.

Electronic gates open to a paver-stone drive that curves up to the front of the English-y mansion where an unfortunately unsubstantial decks extends from the front faade to create a rather anemic-looking porte-cochere. Inside, the public rooms exude a distinct southern bordello style with miles of custom carved woodwork throughout, a curving staircase la The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, a formal dining room with a pair of glittery crystal chandeliers and yard after yard after yard of gold and crimson velvet brocade upholstery in the double-height formal living room.

The less formal family quarters include a room with parquet floors that listing information calls and "English pub and game room" that includes a billiards table and a full-scale built-in bar with glass fronted cabinets full of booze. In the family/media room we find blood red walls, dark blue patterned wall-to-wall carpeting, a giant poster of Mister Schneider's face and a suite of sofas and ottomans upholstered in the very same crimson and gold velvet brocade fabric used in the formal living room.

The half dozen bedrooms include two full master suites, one of which has a fireplace with carved wood mantelpiece, a ceiling fan, wall-to-wall carpeting that runs from the bedroom right on into the bathroom and a gold-ish coverlet laid over a bed laden with far too many decorative pillows. To each his or her own to be sure, but iffin anyone were to ask Your Mamaand nobody didwe'd hiss and piss about how the bedroom day-core is aggressively banal, beyond horrendous and, let's be honest puppies, runs up on horrific.

A driveway winds from the front gate past the house and through the mostly flat grounds to an electronically controlled gate. The property offers garage space for up to five General Lees and additional parking for 8 or 10 more pee-cup trucks SUVS. A terrace that runs along the backside of the house steps down to a large lawn and infinity-edged black-bottomed swimming pool and spa. A poolside cabana with vaulted ceiling and fireplace is also equipped with a fully-equipped kitchen with built-in barbecue. A seasonal stream trickles across the undeveloped back end of the property where the next owner might easily construct equestrian facilities.

Property records reveal that in addition to the family home in Agoura Hills Mister and Missus Schneider's property portfolio includes (but may not be limited to) a townhouse-style condo in Westlake Village, CA, a very modest house in the suburban Nashville, TN community of Madison and several properties in and around Apple Valley, CA.

Shes always looking for ways to expand her empire, and earlier today (February 22) Katie Price was spotted launching her new fashion range in London, England.

The model/designer/author showed off some new looks from her Day22 label while the paparazzi eagerly snapped up pictures.

In related news, Katies soon-to-be-ex-husband Alex Reid has reported demanded $9.7 million in alimony settlement.

Previously, Katie Price had agreed to give him $1 million and buy him a house, but it seems Reid is getting a bit greedy considering they were together less than a year.

An insider told press, "Alex's demand for her to pay him USD 9.7 million as part of a divorce settlement have left her staggered. She can't help but think Alex is a very deluded man indeed."

Nick Lachey Says Wedding Planning Is Going 'Slowly But Surely'

Nick Lachey proposed to Vanessa Minnillo last November after dating for four years, and he's pleased with their wedding preparations so far.

He said: "We're working on it. We're getting there slowly but surelywe're inching our way along."

Speaking at a swim party hosted by Sports Illustrated at Vanity Nightclub in Las Vegas, the former reality TV star -- who divorced Jessica Simpson in 2005 after three years of marriage -- also revealed he only has eyes for his bride-to-be.

He told E! Online: "It's a look, no touch party for me so I'm just gonna enjoy it from afar.

"Vanessa looks as good if not better than any of the models you see behind me in a swimsuit."

Earlier this month, Nick, 37, told of how their engagement was part of a "carefully calculated plan" because he didn't want to fail in his proposal to the 30-year-old beauty.

He explained: "You gotta take it in stages. If you set the bar too high then you set yourself up for failure. This was a carefully calculated plan. You have to set the romance but you have to take it in phases. This was phase one."

Brad Pitt is reportedly building an apartment on the grounds of his Chateau Miraval estate in France to accommodate his parents Bill and Jane Pitt, who plan to help raise the couples large brood.

A source told The Sun newspaper: The whole family is going to move there as soon as the renovations are done. At the moment they have six nannies -- one for each of the kids -- and the plan is to get rid of the helpers and rely on Bill and Jane.

"The annex they will live in is an old building which used to be used as a dovecote.

"It's big enough to have a sitting room, kitchen and a couple of bedrooms. It will make a lovely little cottage for them."

Brad, 47, and Angelina, 35, are said to have asked Bill and Jane to move in with them in order to give their children a more stable home life, instead of traveling the world for months at a time to keep up with the couples movie-making commitments.

The source added: They don't want them dragged around the world any longer.

"Brad is traditional and wants them to put down roots and have friends and go to the same school, rather than constantly moving.

They'll pretty much retire from Hollywood for a while.

It is believed that Angelinas Tourist co-star Johnny Depp -- who also lives in France with partner Vanessa Paradis and children Lily-Rose, 11, and eight-year-old Jack -- encouraged the couple to make their permanent base in Europe.

A source said recently: Johnny said if they want a normal life they must leave Los Angeles. They all agree the time has come for them to focus on bringing up their family.

"They have plenty of money and they want to relax and enjoy it."

Lady Gaga: 'I Am on the Drunk Diet'

Lady Gaga has a special way of keeping in shape: whiskey! She's a big fan of the alcoholic beverage because she thinks it helps her creativity but still maintains her toned figure, because she hits the gym even if she's suffering from the after-effects of too much alcohol.

She told Sirius XM radio: "I am on the drunk diet. I live my life as I want to, creatively. I like to drink whiskey and stuff while I am working. But the deal is I've got to work out every day, and I work out hung over if I am hung over. And it's about the cross-training and keeping yourself inspired. I have to say, I do a ton of yoga."

Lady Gaga has previously caused controversy with her extreme dieting methods.

The 24-year-old singers former tour manager, David Ciemny, claimed last year she would binge on junk food such as cakes and sweets, then not eat for weeks to fit into her costumes -- once losing 20 pounds between fittings for one of her outfits.

Describing her condition, David said: "When I say she was sick, I mean physically and mentally."

Talent scout Wendy Starland added: "The pressure on her to lose weight was very high."
