It was a bit like the Grand National with early front runners then an outsider making the running but there was always a hard core of competitors there or there about throughout the competition including the eventually winner Maybellene the Pug.

The vote was open to the general public so the competition was fierce, but in the end the winner Maybellene the Pug romped home winning first prize not only for herself which was a 12 month modelling contract with Urban Pup and a hamper full of clothes and accessories but also a fantastic prize for her owner Aislinn Ball who said I am so proud of Maybellene for coming first in the competition and for winning me this fantastic prize’.

Aislinn won a nights stay for two in the five star Mayfair hotel in London complete with champagne dinner and tickets for Legally Blonde the Musical, so there will be some fun in London that weekend. We all had a lot of fun at Urban Pup hosting the competition and two of our favourite people ‘Barking At The Moon’ Radio DJs and best buds Jo Good and Anna Webb were the stars of the show along with the four legged pals Matilda and Molly, we have had the pleasure of being on their Thursday night show so it was no surprise that they ended up as the main characters.

From 11 July 2011 Carley Stenson will play college sweetheart Elle Woods in the Olivier award-winning show and, Carley, who is currently playing Margot in the West End production, steps up to play the leading role joining Lee Mead who joins the cast later this month (20 June) to play Emmett Forrest and Natalie Casey as ditzy beautician Paulette Buonofonté. Peter Davison continues in the role of Professor Callahan as well as Nicola Brazil as Serena and Siobhan Dillon as Vivienne.

But as we all know the real stars of the show are Bruiser the Chihuahua and his Bulldog side kick Rufus, they hog the limelight every time they make an appearance on stage, so if you can’t get to London to see this fantastic show it will be coming to a theatre near you in the near future.

With our good friends Jo Good and Anna Webb of Barking at the Moon fame on BBC Radio London also starring in the show it was one more fabulous reason for us to be involved and to see what their pooches get up… roof top skate boarding, swimming lessons and chilling out in the BBC London radio station, to name a few, we also had the dog wedding of the year which apparently cost
the owner £20,000!!!

One of the Urban Pup highlights had to be when Jo and Anna met up with Julian Clary at the dog friendly hotel in Kensington for afternoon tea, not only for themselves but for their dogs as well, it was so funny especially when Julian turned his wit on the waiter, but for us the main event was when Jo and Anna presented Julian with two personalised hoodies for his Staffie Albert, both of which had been designed by Urban Pup especially for the occasion.

Our role was to host a competition on A Different Breed’s dedicated Facebook  were contestants were invited to enter their dogs into one of three categories; Cutest, Best Dressed and Most Popular. Here contestants vied for first place, not just because everyone wants to be Top Dog but because the lucky winner of the competition was set to be the face of UrbanPup.com for the next 12 months, not only that but the lucky owner would receive two tickets for Legally Blonde the Musical and an overnight stay in the five star Mayfair Hotel located in London’s West End.

It was obvious to us here at Urban Pup HQ after seeing the how cute and well dressed they all were that it was going to be a close and tough battle for first place, especially with such a prestigious title at stake. The results are in and the winner has been announced, Maybellene the Pug and her owner Aislinn Ball claimed the first prize. Maybellene will be modelling for Urban Pup for the next 12 months and who knows this might be the start of a fantastic career, Kate Moss watch your back, Maybellene is coming through!

Regardless of how strange some of the antics were it has to be said that the bottom line is that all the dogs in the show and who were entered in the competition are much loved dogs, they are part of their respective families and celebrities in their own right, they are happy and contented and we here at UrbanPup.com think that’s what it’s all about, being kind and considerate to our four legged friends.

In the latest edition of K9 Magazine, Kim O’Meara uncovers the true Abi, her love of dogs and in particular one special man who stole her heart a year ago.

Tell us about your dog, Danny – we’d like to know everything about him!

He’s a cross-breed and he just turned 1 on New Year’s Day. He’s a really playful dog, a real live wire! He loves lots of fuss and cuddles and gets on really well with other dogs. He’s a little timid of children so I’m walking him past the schools every day now to try and get him used to them.

I got him from the Dogs Trust in West London and I knew at the start of last year that I was going to have a block of 3 months free so knew I wanted to get a dog and would have the time then to settle a new dog in properly.

When I went to look around I primarily thought I’d want an older dog, and to be honest didn’t think I’d see puppies in rescues, but I had a look around and didn’t see a dog that was right for me. Then on my way out I walked past an area that had puppies in. I had a look and saw Danny’s litter.

They had come in from Northern Ireland and had spent a couple of nights outside before being brought in by some local people. He had 5 litter mates, maybe more, but they weren’t too well when they came in because of their rough start.

When I saw Danny and his litter they were around 6-8 weeks old at the time and still being treated to get better.

I went home and did lots of research, went on sites such as DogsBlog.com and read lots more books about choosing a puppy. I went back in to see Danny and his litter everyday for the next 3 weeks. I felt it was such an important decision I needed to read as much as I could and going regularly I was able to take the points I’d read, such as in Dr Bruce Fogle’s book he talks about finding a healthy dog, not one that’s overly yappy, not one that’s too nervous.

I spotted Danny the first time I went and I still felt he was the one for me so I took him out every day and watched him playing from a distance with his friends all while bearing in mind what I’d learnt.

I wore the same coat every day, it had a fur collar and he loved to snuggle into it. I gave him treats and when I went to pick him up wore the same coat worn every day I’d seen him.

When did your interest in pets/animals begin and how long have you been a pet owner?

We owned a dog growing up, a Yorkshire Terrier called Blue. It still breaks my heart, he was being looked after by somebody because we were away on holiday and he got run over.

I was 9 years old at the time and I don’t think I ever got over it to be honest. Circumstances meant we didn’t have another dog growing up so I’m so pleased last year gave me that free time at home to get Danny.

Did you always know you would rescue your next dog?

I did. I think when there’s so many dogs out there looking for new homes, that’s the decision made really. I knew I wanted a cross-breed as well because they’re typically more healthy and can live longer. I also think cross-breeds are more interesting.

Danny has so much personality. I think when you rescue a dog you get so much back and know you’ve done something really worthwhile. I didn’t know this feeling I have of knowing Danny now has this live would last with me as long as it has.

It’s a lovely feeling and he gives me so much, I wouldn’t be without him for the world.
