Over half (56%) of the UK’s dog owners have been accused of spending more time or lavishing more attention on their dogs, than partners.

According to the recent survey carried out on behalf of UrbanPup.com, of the 1,068 dog owners questioned, an astonishing 70% are planning to spend the day doing their pets favourite things – such as a trip to the beach or long walks in countryside, which is just aswell as 18% will receive a specially prepared meal on the day.

Denis Kelly, owner of pet fashion retailer UrbanPup.com offered his thoughts on the findings: “We’ve known for years that dog owners really do cherish their pets and these findings show just that. Over 61% of the owners spoken to said the best thing about owning a dog is the unconditional love and so owners might be taking a day out to show just how much their pet means to them but they feel it’s reciprocated day after day by the love and companionship their pets show them.”

23% of Britain’s dogs will receive special gifts bought especially for them to celebrate Valentine’s Day costing on average £10 however a lucky 4% will have gifts worth more than £100 waiting for them to open on the special day.

It was a bit like the Grand National with early front runners then an outsider making the running but there was always a hard core of competitors there or there about throughout the competition including the eventually winner Maybellene the Pug.

The vote was open to the general public so the competition was fierce, but in the end the winner Maybellene the Pug romped home winning first prize not only for herself which was a 12 month modelling contract with Urban Pup and a hamper full of clothes and accessories but also a fantastic prize for her owner Aislinn Ball who said I am so proud of Maybellene for coming first in the competition and for winning me this fantastic prize’.

Aislinn won a nights stay for two in the five star Mayfair hotel in London complete with champagne dinner and tickets for Legally Blonde the Musical, so there will be some fun in London that weekend. Aislinn has a very distinctive look and is into vintage clothing, she also has her own line of clothing at BooBoo Kitty Couture.

We all had a lot of fun at Urban Pup hosting the competition and two of our favourite people ‘Barking At The Moon’ Radio DJs and best buds Jo Good and Anna Webb were the stars of the show along with the four legged pals Matilda and Molly, we have had the pleasure of being on their Thursday night show so it was no surprise that they ended up as the main characters.

From 11 July 2011 Carley Stenson will play college sweetheart Elle Woods in the Olivier award-winning show and, Carley, who is currently playing Margot in the West End production, steps up to play the leading role joining Lee Mead who joins the cast later this month (20 June) to play Emmett Forrest and Natalie Casey as ditzy beautician Paulette Buonofonté. Peter Davison continues in the role of Professor Callahan as well as Nicola Brazil as Serena and Siobhan Dillon as Vivienne.

But as we all know the real stars of the show are Bruiser the Chihuahua and his Bulldog side kick Rufus, they hog the limelight every time they make an appearance on stage, so if you can’t get to London to see this fantastic show it will be coming to a theatre near you in the near future.

With our good friends Jo Good and Anna Webb of Barking at the Moon fame on BBC Radio London also starring in the show it was one more fabulous reason for us to be involved and to see what their pooches get up… roof top skate boarding, swimming lessons and chilling out in the BBC London radio station, to name a few, we also had the dog wedding of the year which apparently cost
the owner £20,000!!!

One of the Urban Pup highlights had to be when Jo and Anna met up with Julian Clary at the dog friendly hotel in Kensington for afternoon tea, not only for themselves but for their dogs as well, it was so funny especially when Julian turned his wit on the waiter, but for us the main event was when Jo and Anna presented Julian with two personalised hoodies for his Staffie Albert, both of which had been designed by Urban Pup especially for the occasion.

Our role was to host a competition on A Different Breed’s dedicated Facebook  were contestants were invited to enter their dogs into one of three categories; Cutest, Best Dressed and Most Popular. Here contestants vied for first place, not just because everyone wants to be Top Dog but because the lucky winner of the competition was set to be the face of UrbanPup.com for the next 12 months, not only that but the lucky owner would receive two tickets for Legally Blonde the Musical and an overnight stay in the five star Mayfair Hotel located in London’s West End.

It was obvious to us here at Urban Pup HQ after seeing the how cute and well dressed they all were that it was going to be a close and tough battle for first place, especially with such a prestigious title at stake. The results are in and the winner has been announced, Maybellene the Pug and her owner Aislinn Ball claimed the first prize. Maybellene will be modelling for Urban Pup for the next 12 months and who knows this might be the start of a fantastic career, Kate Moss watch your back, Maybellene is coming through!

Regardless of how strange some of the antics were it has to be said that the bottom line is that all the dogs in the show and who were entered in the competition are much loved dogs, they are part of their respective families and celebrities in their own right, they are happy and contented and we here at UrbanPup.com think that’s what it’s all about, being kind and considerate to our four legged friends.
