Initialize a new battery. Before using battery for first time, It should be charged fully to obtain optimum capacity. Lithium ion batteries should be charged for about six hours while Nickel-based batteries should be charged for 16 hours. Nickel-based batteries should run thorough 4-5 full charge and full discharge cycles but Li-ion batteries should not be discharged fully. It should be recharged when batteries meter shows 1 bar left.

Keep the battery cool. Put the battery in the freezer or fridge. Your battery will last longest if used near room temperature, and nothing wears on a battery like extended exposure to high temperatures. While you can’t control the weather, you can avoid leaving your phone in a hot car or in direct sunlight, and you don’t have to carry your phone in your pocket, where your body heat will raise its temperature. In addition, check the battery while it’s charging. If it seems excessively hot, your charger may be malfunctioning. Use only a charger rated for your battery, and discontinue use of a charger that causes the battery to heat up excessively.

Store batteries properly. Batteries should be stored in dry and cool place and avoid it keeping with metallic objects, it might short-circuit the terminals. Recharge is necessary before using after storage.

Clean the battery contacts on the battery and on the phone. Clean the batteries with cotton swab or isopropyl alcohol at some intervals.
