Maybe you are unwilling to commit to a lengthy cell phone contract because they require a credit check, or because you don’t want to remain stuck with a cell phone carrier for a long period of time. Prepaid phone plans allow you to bypass all this and can give you much more freedom. They offer many advantages, such as:

1. No commitment

When you opt into a prepaid plan, you are not bound by a contract. You can terminate your subscription at any time by simply stopping to add time to your cell phone. This is a big advantage for users who want to try a new service provider without getting a contract.

2. No credit issue

If your credit isn’t exactly commendable or if you prefer to keep that information personal, you can have a hard time getting into an extended cell phone contract with a major carrier. Prepaid plans can be good alternative since pay as you go plans do not require a credit check.

3. Carryover minutes

Most pay as you go plans allow you to keep your leftover minutes at the end of the month. This is a big advantage if you use your cell phone only once in a while as you can accumulate a large amount of minutes for when you really need them. Note that most providers will ask that you add a minimum amount of money to your phone each month in order for your minutes to carry over to the next month.

4. Help establish your needs

Getting into a contract is a delicate matter if you are buying your first cellular phone because you don’t really know how much time you will spend talking on your phone each month. A pay as you go plan can help you evaluate how many minutes you need each month before having to sign a contract. Once you have established your needs, you can always call your carrier and get the contract that will best suit you.

5. No monthly fees

There are no mandatory monthly fees with a prepaid phone plan. Some carriers will charge you a small amount every month such as a 911 fee, but if you leave your cell phone empty and don’t use it, you don’t have to pay it. Be aware that some carriers may deactivate your phone if you don’t use it for an extended period of time.

6. Teach children and teens how to manage their time

If your children or teenagers bust their time limits with a regular plan, the overtime minutes will be automatically charged to your cell phone bill. If however you give them pay as you go cell phones and a time card every month, they will learn how to manage their talk time effectively and be more aware of how much mobile phones cost to operate because the phone will simply stop working if they run out of time.

Since they don’t require a commitment on your part, pay as you go cell phone plans are perfect for that “emergency phone” you keep in the car. You can truly benefit from prepaid plans if you take the time to evaluate your needs correctly. Pick your carrier carefully, and if you are not satisfied, you are always free to switch to a new carrier at a later time.

If you are shopping for a new phone, have a look at these cheap prepaid cell phones:

If you’ve been the victim of a prank call from a cell phone at 2 o’clock in the morning, you might be tempted to do a cell phone number trace to find out information about the culprit. If you thought it would be free however, you’ll be disappointed to hear that you cannot perform a cell phone number trace for free (sorry to burst your bubble!). Most sites that can perform a reverse cell phone lookup will charge you in some ways or another.

There are no directories for cell phone numbers as there are with landline numbers that allow you to trace a cell phone number for free yet. Companies that offer this service have to gather their information in ways that cost them money, and that’s why the best way to obtain legit information on a cell phone number is to pay for it.

Paying for a cell phone number trace

A single cell phone number trace will cost you around $15 from most reverse cell phone lookup sites. If you use the feature often, some sites allow you to subscribe to a special plan giving you an unlimited number of reverse lookups for a period of time. Paying for a cell phone number trace is the most accurate way to obtain all the information you want, but make sure to do it from a site you trust. Many sites in the reverse cell phone lookup business seem a bit suspicious (especially those offering free cell phone number traces – see below).

Free cell phone number traces – oh really?

Some websites claim to give you free reverse cell phone lookups. You have to be careful around those sites though, because most have ulterior motives. While researching this article, I found one that would trade you information about a cell phone number for your personal information and offer it to marketers and other third parties. If you do want to try it though, make sure to read the fine prints of the end user license agreement when you enter any personal data.

Basic cell phone number information IS free

Some information is better than no information at all. While you can’t do a full cell phone number trace for free, you can still obtain basic information on a number by using a free directory such as 411.com. This directory will give you information such as the country, state and city the cell phone number comes from…

Google is your friend

There is an alternative to all the sites that can trace cell phone numbers, and it’s our friend Google. Simply type the number you want information about in the search box, and if you are lucky you just might find a web page with all the information you are looking for. Maybe you’ll find the cell phone number that has been calling you a 2 o’clock in the morning on the user’s Facebook page.

You have to be very careful around sites that claim to do a cell phone number trace for free. More often than not, these sites have ulterior motives such as gathering personal data, or the information they provide is pretty basic. If you can’t gather enough information from Google, the best way to do a reverse lookup on a cell phone number is to pay for it from a site you can trust. Have you ever used a site to do a cell phone number trace? Which one was it and how did it go?

If you’re a common mortal like me, you probably don’t want to have to learn all the chemistry involved in battery charging and operation just to take good care of your cell phone battery. You just want it to last as long as possible, and this cell phone battery guide will help you do just that.

While I am no expert in battery chemistry, I have sold (and used!) a lot of electronic devices that operate on rechargeable batteries of all types, and my batteries have always lasted far longer than average because I’ve taken good care of my rechargeable batteries.

The following cell phone battery guide will give you common guidelines to make your batteries last as long as possible. Having said that however, it is important to always refer to your cell phone user’s manual first, because all types of cell phone battery chargers operate differently.

This cell phone battery guide will cover four types of batteries:

Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) – They are seldom used nowadays but are still in use in older cell phones.

Nickel Metal Hybride (NiMH) – They are considered better than NiCd batteries because they offer considerably more power for their size.

Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) – More powerful than NiMH batteries and very common in cell phone nowadays.

Lithium Polymer (Li-Po) – They are to Li-Ion batteries what NiMH are to NiCd batteries: an upgraded, more powerful version.

Since there are a few different kinds of cell phone batteries, the first step is to identify which type of battery you have.

How to identify which type of cell phone battery you have

This is pretty straightforward as it should be clearly identified on a label applied directly to the battery itself. In the rare cases where it’s not, refer to the user’s manual to find out which type of battery powers your cell phone (look for a specifications table in the manual).

Once you know which type of battery you have, there is a concept it is important to understand in cell phone battery care, especially if you have a NiCd or NiMH battery: the “memory effect”.

What is the “memory effect”?

The “memory effect” is a term I quite dislike myself, because I find it more confusing than anything and I prefer a scientific explanation. Only NiCd and NiMH batteries are prone to the memory effect. Li-Ion and Li-Po batteries are not affected by this.

Basically, when you discharge a NiCd or NiMH battery partially and exactly to the same point many times, oxidation will occur on the internal battery plates. This oxidation will induce a drop of voltage the next time the battery reaches the point at which oxidation occurred. In effect, it means your battery appears to hold less charge, and your cell phone will complain of low battery or turn itself off prematurely.

This is called the “memory effect” because the battery seems to “remember” at which point it was last recharged and “refuses” to drain further. In order to lessen the symptoms of the memory effect, you should know how much your batteries should be discharged before attempting to charge them back to full power.

Discharging cell phone batteries before recharging

NiMH and NiCd cell phone batteries

Good care must be taken to prolong the life of NiCd and NiMH batteries because these are susceptible to suffer from the memory effect.

While NiCd batteries are very prone to this memory effect, NiMH batteries are less so but not completely immune. Good practice is to discharge these batteries entirely before recharging them, and to always recharge them fully when you do so.

Li-Ion and Li-Po cell phone batteries

On the other hand, Li-Ion and Li-Po batteries do not suffer from the memory effect and can be charged at any time. It is important to note however that they should never be entirely discharged before a charge is attempted. If a lithium battery were to be completely discharged, irreversible damage could happen to the internal battery cells.

Knowing when to charge a cell phone battery is important, but we must also consider how much to charge your cell phone battery to prevent overcharging.

Prevent overcharging

NiMH and NiCd cell phone batteries

NiCd and NiMH cell phone battery chargers are often equipped with a timer or a temperature monitor so they know when to stop charging your batteries to prevent overcharging. Cheaper chargers, however, could keep charging your battery into overcharge, which would damage it and lessen its lifetime (if not render it entirely unusable). The timer and temperature method are not very precise if the battery is not almost completely discharged however, which is another reason to discharge your NiCd or NiMH battery completely before attempting a charge.

Li-Ion and Li-Po cell phone batteries

Typical Li-Ion and Li-Po chargers are usually “intelligent” and will not overcharge your cell phone battery because they are equipped with the equivalent of a voltage monitor. Cheaper chargers or older cell phones, however, will keep charging your battery until you disconnect them from the power outlet, which could lead to overcharging if you’re not careful. A typical full charge time for a Li-Ion battery is between 3 and 4 hours, so if you see your cell phone still charging after a long period of time your charger could be overcharging your battery and causing permanent damage to it.

Normal battery lifetime

Rechargeable batteries do not have an unlimited number of uses, regardless of how well you take care of them. As you use them, they will wear out and appear to hold less and less power until their life runs out. This normal wear is often blamed on the “memory effect”, but it is seldom the case.

NiCd cell phone batteries

If treated well, a NiCd battery can go through 1000 charging cycles before it’s maximum power drops to half of what is originally was.

NiMH cell phone batteries

NiMH batteries can be expected to last for between 500 and 1000 cycles.

Li-Ion and Li-Po cell phone batteries

Li-Ion and Li-Po batteries both have a normal lifetime of between 300 and 500 charging cycles, though it’s usually a bit less for Li-Po batteries as they degrade faster than Li-Ion batteries. It is also to be noted that rechargeable lithium batteries’ life start to decrease from the time of manufacturing, regardless of the number of charge cycles the batteries have had. They are expected to last between 2 and 3 years.

Storing batteries

NiCd cell phone batteries

NiCd batteries should be stored 40% discharged in a cool place. Furthermore, fully charged NiCd batteries will lose about 10% of their power every month even when not in use.

NiMH cell phone batteries

The self-discharge rate of NiMH batteries is higher than NiCd batteries. A fully charged NiMH battery, stored at the room temperature, will typically lose between 5% and 10% of it’s power on the first day and between 0.5% and 1% per day after that. They are thus unsuitable for use in light power using devices such as remote controls, smoke detectors, etc. but this is not an issue in a cell phone as charging is to be expected every few days anyways. Newer NiMH cells have been introduced in 2005 to give NiMH batteries longer shelf lives. Manufacturers claim the newer cells preserve 70% power after one year of storage at room temperature.

Li-Ion and Li-Po cell phone batteries

Li-Ion batteries have a self-discharge rate of about 5-10% per month, while Li-Po batteries have a self-discharge rate of 5% per month. Li-Ion and Li-Po batteries should be stored at about 40% capacity and kept in a cool place.

I hope this cell phone battery guide was useful to you. It’s important to take good care of your cell phone battery if you want to maximize its potential, and it’s also normal for a rechargeable battery to wear out after a few years of use.

If you are looking for a new cell phone battery, I suggest you buy a new one from a trusted seller. This is especially true with lithium rechargeable batteries, as their shelf time is only 2 or 3 years. For example, Amazon offers cheap Motorola RAZR batteries.

You are probably loosing money as we speak. Right now, you are being overcharged for something you are overusing or might not even be using. This could very well be the case if you have not looked at your cell phone bill recently. Do you want to know how you can save on your cell phone bill? Read on, the following tips could help you.

1. Consider a prepaid cell phone plan. No surprise and no worries. You don’t need to sign up for a long-term contract and you pay a fixed amount per month to keep your cell phone in good babbling order.

2. Get a contract. Wait – didn’t I just say to consider a prepaid plan? Yes, I did. Then why consider getting a contract? Because it all depends of how much you use your cell phone. If you talk on the cell a lot, getting a contract is one of the best money saver move you can make. As long as you respect the following point, that is.

3. Know your real cell phone usage. Monitor your minutes, your text messages and your data usage closely. More likely than not, you’re either busting your limit every month or are so much under your limit that you can move down to a cheaper cell phone plan.

4. Periodically check for promotions. The telecommunication industry is changing very fast, giving birth to new cell phone plans and promotions every month. Even if you’re satisfied with your current plan, you could save money on your cell phone bill if you check for promotion periodically.

5. Get rid of unnecessary services. Stop downloading overpriced ringtones, unsubscribe from the services that tap into your SMS budget by sending you unsolicited text messages and cut down on your data plan if you don’t use it that much.

6. Bundle services. If your cell phone carriers offer cable TV, residential land lines and whatnot, you can bundle your services together and ultimately save on your cell phone bill.

7. Use consumer retention programs. Most cell phone carriers have a consumer retention programs. If another carrier is having a wonderful promotion on their cell phone plans, call your current carrier and tell them about it. They might make you a better offer to keep you as a client.

It’s easy to save on your cell phone bill if you stop to think about it. How do you save on your cell phone bill? Have you monitored your cell phone usage recently? Have you ever made use of a consumer retention program? Share with the rest of the universe in the comments below.

I’ve already written about how to read EXIF data in the past and I feel like I could expand a bit further on the topic. Your camera phone stores EXIF data in every picture you take and today we’re going to look at what is EXIF data, why it is your friend and how to view EXIF data.

What is EXIF data?

EXIF is an acronym for Exchangeable Image File Format and it is used by electronic devices to store additional information in image files besides pixel and color information.

EXIF data (or EXIF metadata) allows you to know interesting facts about the settings used by the device to capture an image, like the time and date, the focal length of the lens, aperture settings, shutter speed, ISO speed and even the model of the camera phone used to take the picture. JPEG and TIFF are two popular image file formats support EXIF data and a lot of phones are starting to write EXIF information in image files.

Why EXIF data is your friend

EXIF data is very useful to have if you’re a photographer. You can use it to analyze the settings you used to take your pictures and find out what you did right and what you did wrong in them. Also, you can often view the EXIF data of pictures uploaded to online photo albums such as Flickr and it can often unveil secrets about which settings a photographer used to take his pictures.

If you’re shopping for a new camera phone, you can visit popular online photo album sites like Flickr and Picasa. These websites use EXIF data to categorize photos, and they allow you to search pictures by camera model and you can find a lot of sample pictures from the camera phone you’re planning to buy.

EXIF data also allows for Geolocation (or geotagging) if your camera phone supports it, meaning that your pictures will be tagged with the location where you took them, a very useful feature to have when you’re traveling.

Which cameraphones support EXIF metadata?

According to Flickr, the five most popular cameraphones are:

1. The iPhone with its average 2 megapixel camera but incredible image management software.

2. The Nokia N95 with its amazing 5 megapixel camera and integrated flash.

3. The BlackBerry Storm 9530 with a 3.2 megapixel camera, integrated flash and auto-focus functionality.

4. The BlackBerry Curve 8330 with its 2 megapixel camera, flash and 5x digital zoom.

5. The Sony Ericsson W580i with its 2 megapixel camera.

As you can see in the following graph taken from Flickr, although it doesn’t have the best camera the iPhone is by far the most popular cameraphone on Flickr at the time of this writing.

How to view EXIF data

Sometimes you can view EXIF data directly on the cell phone which you used to take a picture. Once the pictures are on your computer, most photo manipulation software will allow you to read EXIF data.

For example, in Adobe Photoshop select “File Info…” from the File menu.

Alternatively, you can view the EXIF data in Windows Vista if you right-click an image file in the file explorer and select Properties.

The process is similar in Windows XP, right-click a file and select Properties. In the Properties tab, go to Summary and pick Advanced.

You can also view EXIF data in Mac OS X. Do a Get Info on a file in the Finder, and expand the More Info section.

You can also upload your pictures to a web site like Jeffrey’s Exif Viewer which will allow you to view EXIF data without any kind of special software.

Hopefully this article will have shed some light on EXIF data and how you can view it. How do you use EXIF data? Share in the comments below!

• Keep wireless phone batteries fully charged.

The last thing you want during an emergency is to run out of battery.

• Have additional charged batteries and car-chargers available for back-up.

That way your cell phone will work until you run out of gas :) You can buy spare cell phone batteries and cheap chargers here.

• Keep spare wireless phone batteries, chargers and other equipment in a dry, accessible location.

Failing this, maybe you can still save your wet cell phone.

• Maintain a list of emergency phone numbers — police, fire and rescue agencies; power companies; insurance providers; family, friends and co-workers — and program them into your phone.

That is actually a very useful tip. Most of us tend to keep only our friends and family numbers programmed into our phones, but you can store business and emergency phone numbers there too.

• Distribute wireless phone numbers to family members and friends.

Pretty obvious, and make sure you have theirs too.

• Forward your home phone calls to your wireless number if you will be away from home or are forced to evacuate.

And answer selectively using caller ID. You still don’t want to be bothered by work if you’re on a getaway trip.

Thanks Verizon!

Whether you’re shopping for your first cell phone or renewing a cell phone contract, finding the best cell phone plan can be a bit overwhelming.

There are so many carriers to choose from and so many plans available (and I’m not even considering custom cell phone plans), it’s important to take some time to think about it. Hopefully this article will help you pick the best cell phone plan.

What is the best cell phone plan?

The best cell phone plan is the one that perfectly fits your needs and thus the first and most important thing to consider when shopping for a cell phone plan is YOURSELF. You need to connect to your real needs, not your publicity-induced buy-this-cell-phone-now-and-make-lots-of-friends needs.

If you can evaluate your needs in an objective manner, you can be assured to find the best cell phone plan. In order to do this, put the following points into consideration:

• Why are you looking for a new cell phone plan?

If it is not your first plan and are considering a change, it is probably because your current plan isn’t the best cell phone plan for you. Are you busting your minute limit every month? Do you need to make more long distance calls? Are you looking into a data plan to access the internet? Or maybe you realized you don’t need to pay for such an expensive plan.

If it’s your first plan, what are you hoping to achieve by getting a cell phone? What will be its primary purpose?

• How many daytime minutes do you need?

Do you really speak on your cell phone a lot during the day? Maybe you can get away with a plan that offers you only 150 minutes during the day per month but has unlimited nights and weekends as it would save you a lot of money. Try to estimate the number of minutes you are going to spend talking on your cell phone during the day.

• Do you need unlimited nights and weekends?

If you use your cell phone for business, maybe you don’t really need unlimited nights and weekends as you are going to spend most of your cell phone minutes during daytime – maybe you’d be better off with a cell phone plan that gives you 1500 minutes to use anytime.

If you use your cell phone for personal use, it is most likely your will be using it a lot during nights and weekends. Again, try to estimate the number of minutes you are going to spend during nights and weekends.

• Long distance / roaming calls?

If you are traveling often or have friends and family living outside of your local zone, it might be interesting to research cell phone plans that have long distance minutes included to avoid expensive roaming fees or long distance call fees. How many minutes per month do you think you will spend roaming or in long distance calls? The best cell phone plan for you might have unlimited long distance calls in your region or nationwide.

• Do you need text messaging?

How often do you use text messaging? Do you receive and send text messages a lot? If so, it might be worthwhile to consider a cell phone plan with text messaging, especially with some carriers now charging for received text messages as well, whether they are solicited or not.

If you already have a cell phone, you can look at your previous SMS usage to find out if getting a plan that includes a number of text messages every month is worth it.

• Do you need a data plan?

Transferring data like ring tones and wallpapers from the internet can cost you a LOT of money if you don’t subscribe to a data plan. If you plan to transfer data from the internet a lot, browse the web or download a lot of games it is probably worth looking into a data plan.

If, however, you want to use the internet only to occasionally download a song, a new wallpaper or ring tone, you might want to investigate other ways to transfer these multimedia elements to your cell phone, like downloading them on your computer and transferring them to your cell phone afterward.

• What about family cell phone plans?

Some cell phone plans will allow you to have more than one handset linked to the plan. You then have a common pool of minutes that are shared between all the handsets. This can be a handy feature for a small family as it can save you a lot of money – adding another cell phone to a family plan can cost as little as 10$ per month.

If you think this could be applicable to your situation, you can try to determine the needs of your family as a whole in terms of talk time and features and see how much money it would save you.

• Contracts?

Cell phone plan contracts allow you to buy a cell phone for much cheaper than the standard retail price (and often the carrier will give you one for free). These contracts however can be very long (3 years is a long time to be shedding 75$ a month for).

It’s up to you to decide whether or not the best cell phone plan for you comes with a contract, but put into balance the amount of money you’ll be saving on your cell phone purchase versus the amount of money you’ll be forced to spend for the duration of the contract and ask yourself if it is really worth it.

• Prepaid phone plans?

What about prepaid phone plans? They are the best cell phone plans for an “emergency phone” and for people who aren’t planning on using their cell phone too much. They can be very cheap and some prepaid phone plans allow you to accumulate your unused time month after month. Also, they don’t require you to sign a contract and this is a major plus for some people.

Once you have established your basic cell phone needs, you can start shopping for a cell phone and a carrier. Take your time and do your research well and you will be a lot less likely to get caught in a plan you didn’t want! Hopefully by now you have a better understanding of what the best cell phone plan is for you.

Many cell phones allow you to set an alarm or a reminder at a certain time or date. Even if you don’t own one of the latest smart phones that come with killer time management applications, it is possible to use your cell phone as a time management tool (even if it’s 5 years old like mine). The following cell phone tips are usable on just about any cell phone – the only features it needs to support are alarms and reminders.

You could use your cell phone alarms and reminders to:

• Remember birthdays

My cell phone is recent enough to come with a basic calendar, which I use as a reminder of my friends birthdays. I’ve always been horrible with dates, so I even setup an alarm to warn me one day before the birthday. I set the event to be recurrent every year, so I don’t have to bother setting it up again for the next year.

• Make sure you don’t miss an important deadline

You know the kind: “How am I going to remember that!” you tell yourself. And before you realize it, you missed it. If you have an appointment or deadline you are predisposed to miss, set up an alarm to remind you of your appointment a few hours before it happens.

• Take a medication

Remembering to take a medication every day can be a real pain, especially if you are somewhat active – never home at the same time at night and sometimes sleeping all morning, it’s easy to forget. Simply set up an alarm on your cell phone to remind you to take it (especially handy when you carry your medication on you).

• Know when you’re available

You’re receiving social invitations left and right and can’t seem to figure out when you’re available? Simply mark all your events in the calendar on your cell phone. You’ll see right away if you’re available when someone invites you to an event.

• Organize your day

Respect your time budget throughout the day by setting alarms on your cell phone to warn you of different time periods. Never miss a break period again!

• Alarm clocks anywhere

Whether you’re traveling alone and dozing off at the airport, are afraid the (sometimes complicated) hotel room alarm clock doesn’t fire off, or are having a lunch nap at work, your cell phone alarm clock is often overlooked and can be used just as that – an alarm clock.
