Hello to all my WordPress blog followers!

After 2½ years on the WordPress.com publishing platform, I have decided to make a change. My time here at WordPress has been very fulfilling. I really have learned a lot about blogging, html, community, and most importantly, myself. I have connected with a variety of special people here, and I will never forget them.

One important thing I have also come to realize are the limitations of the WordPress platform. Don’t get me wrong, I love the platform. It is, by far, the most feature-filled online publishing platform out there. This is the reason I struggled with the decision to move my blog for three months before I finally did it. One thing I was really looking for was the ability to have more control over my site’s html and script deployment, so I moved to blogger. I know I am compromising some publishing features for the code freedom I am needing. Overall, it has turned out to be a better fit for my site.

Having said that, I am reaching out to all of you…my followers here on WordPress. I know most of you are loyal to WordPress, and I can respect that. All I ask is that you please CONSIDER subscribing to my new blog. My url is the same http://www.censorshipinamerica.com My feed is now being handled by feedburner HERE. I will be slowly moving the content from WordPress to Blogger over the next few months. This is somewhat painful since Blogger does not recognize the WordPress export file format. No worries though, I have already started posting over there, and the response has been very positive thus far.

In closing, I would like to say a sincere THANK YOU to all of you. I have been inspired and motivated by your comments and likes. I appreciate the time spent reading your blogs as well. This site will remain on line for archival purposes. As I move the posts over to blogger, I will set up custom redirects from the old urls to the new ones. A Caution to American Citizens – Department of Homeland Security Warning!

Lord James of Blackheath: My Lords, I hope the minute that that has taken has not come off my time. I do not wish noble Lords to get too encouraged when I start with my conclusions but I will not sit down when I have made them. I will then give the evidence to support them and, I hope, present the reasons why I want support for an official inquiry into the mischief I shall unfold this afternoon. I have been engaged in pursuit of this issue for nearly two years and I am no further forward in getting to the truth.

There are three possible conclusions which may come from it. First, there may have been a massive piece of money-laundering committed by a major Government who should know better. Effectively, it undermined the integrity of a British bank, the Royal Bank of Scotland, in doing so. The second possibility is that a major American department has an agency which has gone rogue on it because it has been wound up and has created a structure out of which it is seeking to get at least €50 billion as a pay-off. The third possibility is that this is an extraordinarily elaborate fraud, which has not been carried out, but which has been prepared to provide a threat to one Government or more if they do not make a pay-off. These three possibilities need an urgent review.

In April and May 2009, the situation started with the alleged transfer of $5 trillion to HSBC in the United Kingdom. Seven days later, another $5 trillion came to HSBC and three weeks later another $5 trillion. A total of $15 trillion is alleged to have been passed into the hands of HSBC for onward transit to the Royal Bank of Scotland. We need to look to where this came from and the history of this money. I have been trying to sort out the sequence by which this money has been created and where it has come from for a long time.

It starts off apparently as the property of Yohannes Riyadi, who has some claims to be considered the richest man in the world. He would be if all the money that was owed to him was paid but I have seen some accounts of his showing that he owns $36 trillion in a bank. It is a ridiculous sum of money. However, $36 trillion would be consistent with the dynasty from which he comes and the fact that it had been effectively the emperors of Indo-China in times gone by. A lot of that money has been taken away from him, with his consent, by the American Treasury over the years for the specific purpose of helping to support the dollar.

Mr Riyadi has sent me a remarkable document dated February 2006 in which the American Government have called him to a meeting with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, which is neither the Federal Reserve nor a bank. It is a bit like “Celebrity Big Brother”. It has three names to describe it and none of them is true. This astonishing document purports to have been a meeting, which was witnessed by Mr Alan Greenspan, who signed for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York of which he was chairman, as well as chairman of the real Federal Reserve in Washington. It is signed by Mr Timothy Geithner as a witness on behalf of the International Monetary Fund. The IMF sent two witnesses, the other being Mr Yusuke Horiguchi. These gentlemen have signed as witnesses to the effect

16 Feb 2012 : Column 1017 that this deal is a proper deal. There are a lot of other signatures on the document. I do not have a photocopy; I have an original version of the contract.

Under the contract, the American Treasury has apparently got the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to offer to buy out the bonds issued to Mr Riyadi to replace the cash which has been taken from him over the previous 10 years. It is giving him $500 million as a cash payment to buy out worthless bonds. That is all in the agreement and it is very remarkable. Establishing whether I have a correct piece of paper is just two phone calls away-one to Mr Geithner and one to Mr Greenspan, both of whom still prosper and live. They could easily confirm whether they signed it. Mr Riyadi, by passing these bonds over, has also put at the disposal of the US Treasury the entire asset backing which he was alleged to have for the $15 trillion. I have a letter from the Bank of Indonesia which says that the whole thing was a pack of lies. He did not have the 750,000 tonnes of gold which was supposed to be backing it; he had only 700 tonnes. This is a piece of complete fabrication.

Finally, I have a letter from Mr Riyadi himself, who tells me that he was put up to do this, that none of it is true, and that he has been robbed of all his money. I am quite prepared to recognise that one of the possibilities is that Mr Riyadi is himself putting this together as a forgery in order to try to win some recovery. But it gets more complicated than that because each of the $5 trillion payments that came in has been acknowledged and receipted by senior executives at HSBC and again receipted by senior executives at the Royal Bank of Scotland. I have a set of receipts for all of this money. Why would any bank want to file $5 trillion-worth-$15 trillion in total-of receipts if the money did not exist? The money was first said to have come from the Riyadi account to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and from there it was passed to JP MorganChase in New York for onward transit to London. The means of sending it was a SWIFT note which, if it was genuine, ought to have been registered with the Bank of England.

When this came about, I took it to my noble friend Lord Strathclyde and asked what we should do with it. He said, “Give it to Lord Sassoon. He is the Treasury”. So I did, and my noble friend Lord Sassoon looked at it and said immediately, “This is rubbish. It is far too much money. It would stick out like a sore thumb and you cannot see it in the Royal Bank of Scotland accounts”. He went on to say, “The gold backing it is ridiculous. Only 1,507 tonnes of gold has been mined in the history of the world, so you cannot have 750,000 tonnes”. That is true. The third thing he said was, “It is a scam”, and I agree with him. The problem is that at that point we stopped looking, but we should have asked what the scam was instead of just nodding it off.

We have never resolved it. Today, I have this quite frightening piece of paper, which is my justification for bringing it into this meeting. It is available on the internet and I am astonished that it has not already been unearthed by the Treasury because every alarm bell in the land should be ringing if it has. 16 Feb 2012 : Column 1018 review to the end of July 2010 on the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. It has on it some 20 banks listed to which $16.115 trillion is outstanding in loans. That is the sore thumb that was being looked for by my noble friend Lord Sassoon. But more particularly there are two other interesting things. The first is that Barclays Bank has $868 billion of loan, and the Royal Bank of Scotland has $541 billion, in which case one has to ask a question, because they could have earned back in three weeks their entire indebtedness and could pay off the taxpayers of Britain. Why have they not done so and could we please ask them to put a cheque in the post tonight for the whole $46 billion?

The next thing that is wrong with it is that every bank on this list, without exception, is an MTN-registered bank, which means that they are registered to use medium-term notes to move funds between themselves with an agreed profit-share formula, in which case these banks are investing this money and, most extraordinarily, not a penny of interest does the Federal Bank of New York want paid on that vast amount, $16 trillion. Anyone who knows what the IMF rules are will immediately smell a rat. The IMF has very strict rules for validating dodgy money. There are two ways of doing it. You either pass it through a major central bank like the Bank of England, which apparently refused to touch this, or you put it through an MTN-trading bank, which is then able to use the funds on the overnight European MTN trading market where they can earn between 1 per cent and 2.5 per cent profit per night. The compound interest on that sum is huge. If it is genuine, a vast profit is being made on this money somewhere.

I believe that this is now such an important issue that I have put everything that I have got on the subject on to a 104-megabyte memory thumb. I want the Government to take it all, put it to some suitable investigative bureau and find out the truth of what is going on here, because something is very seriously wrong. Either we have a huge amount of tax uncollected on profits made or we have a vast amount of money festering away in the European banking system which is not real money, in which case we need to take it back. I ask for an investigation and for noble Lords to support my plea.”

We just had this video sent to us, which if one listens all the way through to around 50 minutes, one might find a reference (from this now deceased British Journalist – Christopher Story) to some aspects of matters covered above … Namely the aspect of ROGUE USA AGENCIES seeking HUGE sums of money; and at least ONE NAME of their controller!

Truth That Dared To Speak Its Name

On the 16th of February, 2012, in the House of Lords, one courageous man, akin to Churchill attempting alone to warn of the Nazis threat to peace, Lord James of Blackheath, showed the vision, integrity, and fortitude to stand up, be counted, and expose to the House of Lords, the stark evidence of Global Fraud, which he so eloquently stated “there may have been a massive piece of money-laundering committed by a major Government who should know better.”   Also, in his words, “a major American department has an agency which has gone rogue.”  This is a scam of major size and a key to the recovery of the money needed to immediately boost America’s economy, stabilize the EU and fund the Global Settlements.

Lord James invited The House of Lords to assess the implications of his concerns and requested a full inquiry.  While MI6 played around the edges, focused Treasury minds have still not commenced with the thorough investigation needed, nor has the UK Treasury or Foreign Office stood-up and sought to establish the truth.  Lord Sassoon missed the whole point by passing it off with a presumption that, if the Gold claimed was bogus, it was just a scam from Wilfredo Saurin. He purposely overlooked the real issue; money raised against gold that does not exist is fraudulent.  Sassoon should know that grandstanding can make or break careers. 

The consequences of what Noble Lord James was seeking to expose are far reaching.  He was offering a key to the Pandora’s Box of the uncontrolled Cabal and corrupt US agency, with activities carried out not in the interests of Sovereign protection, but for the usurping interests of corrupt banking, political and agency greed.  The extent of the fraud may be too great for State Agency staff to understand, as Sassoon has shown by failing to look into it, so perhaps someone needs to help them all understand our real dangers and risks.  This may help a significant group of international leaders and governments to finally grasp what has been and still is happening. What follows will expand consciousness of this very nasty reality to focus on the key issues and to assist prosecution.

The “agency” Lord James previously raised concerns about in the House of Lords, which he prudently referred to as Foundation X, is in fact the Pureheart Investment operation run by General Lorin William Rossier and assisted by dubious Chief Attorney Marlon McCall.  This “agency” is claimed by McCall to be a subsidiary of Homeland Security, a fact supported by the UN and Homeland codes interjected into their SWIFT transfers for the identified 15 Trillion USD raised by FRAUD, with no Congressional awareness, oversight or permission.   Why is the US Congress not getting this?  15T USD was heisted on YOUR watch Congressman Issa!  Where is our Standards Committee now?

Lord James had originally been approached by Marlon McCall, in turn linked with Sandip Goyal and the notorious Asian Con Man Wilfredo Saurin, with dual intent.

On one hand, they were seeking to offer a too-good-to-be-true 6 billion pounds loan to Her Majesty’s Government, which they had on deposit at HSBC.  They also sought Lord James’ assistance to get HSBC and others to acknowledge the 15T USD, which had been wired previously by JP Morgan, on behalf of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, via HSBC, for further credit to the Royal Bank of Scotland, for the Pureheart account, now sequestrated by rogue RBS bankers.  Poetic justice prevails, as scammers got scammed by the Bankers.

The LWR, GOT S.A., and Pureheart Investments, appears to be a vehicle operated in conjunction with the US Fed, Treasury, and selective US Agencies, with even UN complicity as shown by the attached SWIFTS.  All these entities were cross-compromised by McCall having spent eight weeks in the hospital, preventing the Agency from playing its full role in the US Debt ceiling crisis in August 2011, where the 15T USD debt shortfall was miraculously solved out of thin air utilizing this fraudulent operation.

Pureheart is an unregulated and covert operation of the US Government, with possible links to the Revenue Sustainability Fund (RSF), which funds should have been utilized by the Fed /Treasury to prepare the way for the imminent Global Settlements, which continue to be blocked by the self-interests of the Rothschild’s, Bush’s, and the Heritage Funds.  These funds, once released, would help prepare the way for the critical and necessary re alignment of all major global trading currencies, but most importantly, the consolidation of substantial sovereign debts owed. The world’s biggest problem is lack of economic stability, which we can begin to solve by taking this money and paying the Settlements.

In some areas the RSF has been using Pureheart for several years as a means of clandestinely distributing large volumes of dollars into sovereign economies as a means of maintaining the image of stability. However, this has been a double edged sword, which will be addressed later.

What took place was, in effect, a massive money laundering scheme. The US Treasury had run dry, so they defrauded the global monetary system by illegally creating additional money, which was subsequently stolen.  WE NEED TO DEMAND THIS MONEY BACK AND PAY THE GLOBAL SETTLEMENTS.  There is enough incriminating evidence to hold them all accountable.  The scale of collusion defies belief, yet it happened and still continues.  Congress and the House of Lords need to establish a Joint Task Force to immediately recover this money, and in one swift action, rebalance the world’s economies.

Pureheart functions with no direct oversight and with investigating parties being told “hands off” by key Central Banks, the Treasury, and by major intel agencies.  In an operation created by Pureheart, utilizing the notorious Wilfredo Saurin, the well-known international fraudster; a scam was set up to wire a total of 15T USD in three separate tranches of five trillion dollar SWIFT transfers from the Federal Reserve to the account of LWR, GOT S.A., Pureheart Investment to HSBC London, for further credit to Royal Bank of Scotland Global Plc.  The attached SWIFT transfers and confirmations reveal the smoking gun, including the SWIFT regarding the bogus gold.  This was a very sophisticated cross-agency and bank criminal operation known and colluded to at the highest level.  All the money can be traced.

• On the 20th of April 2009, the first tranche of five trillion dollars was wired using USD SWIFT transfer N: 400930153. The onward transfer from RBS to RBS Group used SWIFT transfer No: 8163708748 with confirmatory tracking and onward SEQUE 851962 at 4.53pm.

• On the 27th of April 2009, the second tranche of five trillion dollars was made USD SWIFT Transfer No 4319901756. Confirmatory tracking SEQUE 924573 at 1.28pm.

• On the 4th of May 2009, the third tranche of five trillion USD SWIFT Transfer No 1186308258. Confirmatory tracking and onward SEQUE 259043 at 2.14pm

• On the 11th of May 2009, a 50 billion Euro transfer was made by SWIFT Transfer No: 4027105584.  Confirmatory tracking and transfer SEQUE 275903 at 2.25pm. (This was later to be pursued for release from HSBC by no other than the Fed Chairman himself coming out of the woodwork.)

Now, an interesting scenario occurred when they transferred this “created money,” where asset backing was needed to balance the books.  They realized they had a serious compliance shortfall problem backing up the history of funds.  They needed to cook-the-books fast to give a credible asset to justify raising the cash.  So, on the 20th of May 2009, operating in conjunction with Wilfredo Saurin, they wired SKR’s (Safekeeping Receipts) from the Bank of Indonesia (BI) for an alleged gold bullion transfer of 750,000 metric tons.  It was of course bogus and fraudulent.  Attached is the issued SWIFT Transfer No 4200754365.  Confirmatory tracking and transfer SEQUE 194743 was also issued at 10:21 am. You will discover coincidentally from the BI SWIFTS, the sum amounts to the $15 Trillion USD needed to underpin the US Fed fraud.

This was all predicated by Saurin against the back up account of Yohannes Riyadi, which only holds 700 metric tons of gold, and can never be moved. We have and hold copies of the real Bank of Indonesia custodial records and full Deputy President Confirmation of Riyadi’s account on a special Fed Bank of Indonesia sub platform. Saurin has operated against Riyadi’s account for years, entrusted by Riyadi to act responsibly, but Saurin has caused him untold damage. The entire chain of this money was a lie, a fraud, and a scam. This means that 15T USD of falsely created money has been issued, traded, and laundered through the banking system making huge profits. To whose benefit? How much profit was made and where is it now?  We want it back with taxes levied, and in good hands helping the world.

The Fed’s accompanying instructions for the transfer of these funds, all personally authorized by Mr. Benjamin Bernanke, included instructions to utilize part Euro funds already lodged with HSBC for the Pureheart account. This was the delay in processing this 50 Billion Euro portion of the transfers, perhaps “fees for the boys,” which caused Mr. Bernanke to fly to the UK and personally walk through the execution of this transfer. This may possibly have been with the knowledge of Lord Stephen Green, who was the Chairman of HSBC at that time. Euro funds later appeared, perhaps as pay offs, in the accounts of fraudsters Sandip Goyal and Wilfredo Saurin for assisting in executing this fraud.

When challenged about Saurin’s role, and imminent risk of arrest for his many scams, Marlon McCall openly stated that Wilfredo Saurin is a Federal Reserve Bank of New York protected agent, and will not be arrested as he is being protected by Homeland Security and the Fed as a managed agent.  That explains a lot!  Anyone issuing fraudulent US dollars is typically tracked down anywhere on the planet by the US, yet Saurin is always the Teflon man.  On one hand, Saurin appears on Fed warning sites, including many Asian media warnings of his many crimes and fee scams; but on the other hand, the FED deals and colludes with him. What shameful duplicity.

The deal offered by Pureheart to the UK to try to get these funds repatriated was as follows:

1. One third was to go to the US Treasury.
2. One third was to go to Pureheart.  To whom and for what purpose?
3. One third was to go to the UK for “services rendered in providing shelter for these funds for two years.”

There has been a systematic failure by collective authorities to address this issue.  Since obstructionist cover-ups continue, we must do the following immediately:

• Seize back the first one third with five trillion USD right now for US economic needs
• Give nothing to Pureheart, and instead the second 5 Trillion USD comes back to the US
• Use the last third to stabilize the UK and the EU
• Identify the vast profits which will have now been made from these funds, recover it, and pay the Private and Global Settlements. 
• Set up a Congressional Task Force and go after this money

This week, the walking wounded lame duck Royal Bank of Scotland, which assisted in fronting this fraud, is repaying its government bailout loan of 163 billion pounds (think 250 billion USD).  The Bank only made a declared trading profit of 1.2 billion pounds.  This is ‘Madoff Style’ accounting.  So clearly, vast amounts are hidden ‘Off Balance Sheet’ for one set of books, and ‘On Balance Sheet’ for another.  The US Fed, US Treasury, UK Treasury, and Bank of England need to set up an URGENT recovery team to find this money.  Her Majesty’s Government holds the key to unlocking and exposing this vast fraud.

McCall was crying – the Brits had frozen him out.  What a turn around.  For almost a century the Fed Scammers raided the planet, and now the Brits have pulled their pants down for 15T USD.

This 15T USD would easily have made over 50T USD in inter-bank trading.  Look at the taxes missed on those profits – approximately 20 Trillion USD.  The RBS Board is liable for criminal prosecution as are many others. The Bank of Indonesia has serious questions to answer here as well.  JP Morgan helped initiate this Fed scam and HSBC helped launder it.  We call for a joint Congressional, UK Lords, and Treasury Task Force to go after it all.  In one swoop, we stabilize the EU, UK and US economies.  Once released, the Global Settlement money will go towards funding infrastructure projects, creating jobs, increasing revenues, and reducing crime, thus reducing despair, creating hope and providing opportunity.  Wilfredo Saurin and Sandip Goyal are flagged on many sites.  Why do they have HSBC and Credit Suisse Bank accounts?  Who cleared them?

TO OUR LEADERS:  DO THE JOBS YOU WERE ELECTED TO DO!  GET THIS MONEY BACK NOW!  STOP TALKING, START ACTING.  IDENTIFY AND PROSECUTE THE ROGUES INVOLVED.

DEUTSCHE BANKE RAIDED!

Police have raided Deutsche Bank offices in several cities in search of evidence of tax evasion and money laundering. The bank is said to be involved in tax fraud related to Europe’s carbon emissions trade. Deutsche Bank properties in Frankfurt, Berlin and Düsseldorf were raided by 500 police on Wednesday, as 25 bank employees were suspected of tax fraud and money laundering, the general prosecutor’s office said.In December 2011, a German court jailed six men – three Britons, two Germans and a Frenchman – over the tax fraud estimated worth about 300 million euros ($390 million). At the time, the judge criticized Deutsche Bank for its role in the crime.

The Whole WORLD is Catching On – FINALLY FOR FUCK’S SAKE

We need a campaign to demand the extradition of Michael Herzog from Germany to the US to stand trial for the Falcone Fraud committed with Bush,Clinton’s, Romney, and bribes paid to the VP.Herzog will then open up his entire record of corruption with Sr and the Clinton‘s. Crime can be seen to have been addressed when they lose it all. What a shock wave then for the Beltway.

BASTARDS SIGHTED #GLENCORE #MINING

In case you don’t know, here is a little background on Glencore and their “leader” Marc Rich:

Marc Rich (born Marcell David Reich; December 18, 1934) is an international commodities trader, hedge fund manager, financier and businessman. He is best known for founding the commodities company Glencore.

In 1983 Rich was indicted by then-U.S. Federal Prosecutor (and future mayor of New York City) Rudolph Giuliani, on illegal trading with Iran and charges of tax evasion. At the time it was the biggest tax evasion case in U.S. history. He was indicted while in Switzerland. Rich failed to return to the U.S. following the indictment, and was on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Ten Most-Wanted Fugitives List for many years.

In 1989 the U.S. Justice Department ceased using statutes of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act in tax cases such as the one in which Rich was indicted, and relied instead on civil lawsuits. However, Marc Rich remained on page 1 of the Justice Department’s Most Wanted International Fugitives.

On 20 January 2001, hours before leaving office, President Bill Clinton granted Rich a presidential pardon.

As Denise Rich had made large donations to the U.S. Democratic Party and the Clinton Library during Clinton’s time in office, Clinton’s critics alleged that Rich’s pardon had been bought. Marc Rich had made substantial donations to Israeli charitable foundations. Clinton explained his decision by noting that similar situations were settled in civil, not criminal court, and cited clemency pleas from Israeli government officials, including then-Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Federal Prosecutor Mary Jo White was appointed to investigate. She stepped down before the investigation was finished and was replaced by James Comey. Comey was critical of Clinton’s pardons and Eric Holder’s pardon recommendation. According to Rich’s attorney, Holder advised to circumvent standard procedures and to submit the pardon petition directly to the White House.

As a condition to the pardon, it was made clear that Rich would drop all procedural defenses against any civil actions brought against him by the U.S. upon his return there. 1. Empathy

Teaching our children about human rights helps them to become more empathetic. When children learn about the struggles that many people have had to deal with throughout history, and even still today, it will teach them have more consideration for people less fortunate than themselves.

2. Thankfulness

Often times children think they have difficult lives, when in reality they have it easy. When children learn about the struggles that different people have had to deal with throughout history, it will likely teach them to be more thankful for the things they have in life.

3. Reality Checks

Though most of us in the western world live in far freer countries than so many in developing states, we are not immune to human rights abuses. Many of us are beholden to infringements of free speech on a daily basis, for example. Most people don’t realize the dangerous steps that governments often take when they feel threatened that have real consequences on the freedoms of everyday people until they formally learn about it.

4. Inspiration

That said, we are still lucky enough to have many freedoms. If we want to be sure that these rights are upheld, we must do certain things to protect them. When children learn about human rights, they will be more willing to take the actions needed to protect themselves (or fight for others who lack them).

5. Tolerance

Learning about human rights also involves learning about different cultures. Our world is full of people of different cultures and backgrounds and when children learn about human rights, they will also learn about the ways that people from different cultures and backgrounds live and feel about beliefs we take for granted.

6. Checks

It’s worth remembering that human rights education isn’t just appropriate for environmentalists, hippies and activists. Courses on human rights are extremely beneficial for professionals from all over the employment spectrum – lawyers, doctors, businesspersons, etc should all have at least a general knowledge of this discipline so that they can keep a “check” on those in their fields who so often abuse or forget them.

Human rights are rights that every person should receive regardless of their race, age, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, age or appearance. When we teach our children about the theories, laws and history of human rights, we are helping them become better citizens of the world. Human rights education is very important if we want to make our world a better place for everyone who inhabits it.

The Pentagon plans to deploy missile defense batteries to its Pacific island territory of Guam to counter threats from North Korea, including the latest warning by Pyongyang to take “actual military countermeasures” against the United States involving, it said, cutting edge nuclear weapons.  U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said on Wednesday that the North’s rhetoric presents a real and clear danger – and one that is not likely to go away soon.

As the rhetoric from the North has become louder, so have the warnings from U.S. military leaders that they are prepared to respond to any action from Pyongyang against the United States and its allies.

Guam is one of the places North Korea has threatened to strike, along with South Korea, Hawaii and the continental United States.

The threats may seem implausible, but Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says they cannot be ignored.

“We take those threats seriously,” said Chuck Hagel. “We have to take those threats seriously.  I think we’ve had measured responsible, serious responses to those threats.”

The U.S. is carrying out routine, joint exercises with South Korea. But U.S. forces have recently intensified their display of might, flying long-range bombers, including B-2 stealth bombers, over the Korean Peninsula that are capable of taking out nuclear installations. The U.S. Navy has also positioned anti-missile destroyers in the area.

For U.S. officials, the key is to avoid miscalculations that, in the worst case, could touch off a nuclear conflict.

“It only takes being wrong once and I don’t want to be the Secretary of Defense who was wrong once,” said Hagel.

Putting missile defense on Guam marks a significant step for the United States – one it says is a precautionary move meant to strengthen the capabilities of American forces in the region – just in case North Korea’s threats turn out to be real.

China has launched a nationwide crackdown on rights activists clamoring for transparency and participation in the government’s closed-door preparations for a once-in-four years U.N. review of the country’s human rights record, according to a rights group.

Chinese rights campaigners who called on the government both to disclose materials about the review and to allow non-government groups to contribute, have been intimidated, put under house arrest, or detained, the overseas-based Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) said in a statement.

While most citizens seized have been held only temporarily, Hunan-based activist Peng Lanlan remains in police custody after being detained in August 2012 on a charge of “obstructing official business,” the group said.

Peng, who has reportedly been tortured in detention, had surveyed petitioners and collected signatures calling on Beijing to make the review drafting process public, it said.

In response to similar requests, China’s foreign ministry said last November that the review materials constituted “state secrets” and could not be disclosed. The review is scheduled for Oct. 22.

Fund-raising campaigner

Rights activists who speak out on behalf of dissidents and prisoners of conscience, as well as petitioners who have been seeking redress for violations of their rights or those of relatives, are frequently themselves harassed, detained, or called in for questioning.

On Wednesday, authorities in the eastern city of Hangzhou called in democracy activist Chen Shuqing for questioning on suspicion of “incitement to subvert state power” after he raised funds for prisoners of conscience over the Chinese New Year holiday period in February.

“Just before 10:00 a.m. I got a visit from two officers of the Gongshu branch of the Hangzhou municipal state security police,” Chen said. “They had summons papers upon which were written ‘incitement to subvert state power’.”

“They basically asked me about the activities organized by the [banned] China Democracy Party (CDP) over Chinese New Year and its fund-raising for the victims of political persecution.”

The nationwide fund-raising campaign was launched by the CDP, the Pan-Blue Alliance, and a number of individual activists, retired teachers, and media professionals, to help political prisoners including Guizhou-based Chen Xi, Sichuan dissident Liu Xianbin, Beijing rights lawyer Ni Yulan, Wuhan writer Li Tie, and Zhejiang CDP veteran Zhu Yufu.

Chen said he had plans to visit the graves of founder members of the CDP for the Qing Ming grave-sweeping festival on Friday.

Flash-mob protester

Meanwhile, netizens launched an online campaign this week to call for the release of a Guangzhou-based activist who took part in a flash-mob protest in February against the recent nuclear weapons test by North Korea.

Shenzhen-based rights activist Yu Gang, who initiated the campaign, said the authorities were charging Liu with “embezzlement” based on a discrepancy in the registration documents of a defunct business.

“They are clearly just using this crime as a way to get rid of him,” Yu said. “They are using these charges as a means to persecute him politically.”

Liu was handed a 15-day administrative sentence for his role in the protest, but his lawyer was unable to secure his release at the end of that period, and further charges were brought.

The charges of embezzlement carry a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment.

An American journalist with a long history of covering national politics says the Washington Post wrongly threw out an op-ed he penned last week that critiqued the media’s role in the Iraq War.

Greg Mitchell, an accomplished author and reporter with by-lines throughout his career in both the Post and New York Times, says the DC-based paper tossed out an assigned piece of his slated to run this week, instead replacing it with one nowhere near as critical.

Bernanke Offers Mixed Economic Outlook For US

Just when things started to look up in the US economy, the Bastard Federal Reserve and Wall Street just can’t help themselves from slapping the American People back down. All in the name of keeping fear alive and maintaining control over us.

The Federal Reserve has cut its economic outlook for 2013 but says the unemployment rate is likely to fall faster than previously expected.  In a statement following a two-day meeting of central bank policy makers, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke reassured financial markets, saying long-term interest rates would remain low for the foreseeable future.

Despite a strong pickup in manufacturing and a much-improved housing market,  the outlook for the US economy remains mixed.  The Federal Reserve said U.S. growth is unlikely to exceed 2.8 percent in 2013.

On the other hand, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke expects U.S. unemployment will fall faster than expected – to as low as 7.3 percent by the end of this year.

“Private payrolls are growing more quickly, total hours have increased, the rate of filings and new claims for unemployment insurance has fallen, and the unemployment rate has continued to tick down,” Bernanke said.

But persistent concerns about government spending cuts, tax hikes, and new signs of instability in Europe continue to weigh on the central bank.  As a result, the Fed plans to keep its $85 billion a month bond buying program to keep long-term interest rates near zero. The low rates have contributed to an extended winning streak on Wall Street.

“The stock market right now is really addicted to this Fed stimulus.  I mean if the Fed had given any indication that they were thinking of scaling back the stimulus, the stock market would have sold off very sharply, but instead the market is up,” said Greg McBride at Bankrate.com

McBride says that’s because low interest rates encourage spending and investments in riskier assets.  While low rates can help boost economic growth, they can also fuel inflation.

Barring a sharp increase in prices, the Fed expects to keep interest rates low until the jobless rate falls to 6.5 percent.

Most experts say that’s not likely to happen until at least 2015.

U.S. lawmakers approved a new spending measure to prevent a government shutdown later this month. It will fund the government through September 30. But the legislation locks in place $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts to domestic and defense programs. The automatic budget reductions, known as the “sequester,” are hitting every federal government agency, with many employees being forced to take days of unpaid leave and government contractors being laid off.

Air traffic controllers at the Frederick, Maryland, municipal airport guide pilots around the busy airspace. But, under the spending cuts known as sequestration, this control tower, like many at smaller airports, is slated to close. Mamie Ambrose has been an air traffic controller for 11 years. She’s among seven government contractors who would lose their jobs.

“We are armed service medal veterans, and now we are getting thrown out on the street for political gain and games. That’s what it means. It also means no income and being in the unemployment line with so many others,” Ambrose said.

More than 20 percent of Frederick’s residents are directly or indirectly employed by the federal government.Its largest employer is the Army’s Fort Detrick, a biomedical research facility with nearly 10,000 workers. Frederick and nearby areas are nervously awaiting the effects of cuts in government spending.

Frederick Mayor Randy McClement and a volunteer deliver hot meals to low-income seniors. The mayor worries federal cuts that cause job losses and salary reductions could indirectly harm charity organizations that help needy residents.

“If the people who help volunteer for meals-on-wheels for the elderly are now more concerned about trying to find jobs or supplement the days lost by going out and getting a part time job they won’t have the ability to volunteer for services like this,” McClement said.

The mayor says nobody has a clear idea of the full impact, but he says job losses and salary reductions will affect some Frederick residents.

“They live in our town, they shop in our town, they do their daily business in our town. Well, if they have one less day of pay per week, then we are going to start seeing a decrease in those services being utilized, That’s how we believe the outcome is going to hurt our municipality,” McClement said.

Richard Griffin, the city’s economic development director, says the good news for this city of 65,000 is its improving economy plus 1.5 million people who visit annually.

“We are a diverse economy, and we also have a very strong visitor and tourism sector of our economy here. Our hope is that the furloughs and any layoffs that we might see from contractors or the federal side itself would be offset a little bit,” Griffin said.

Some local businessmen, like jeweler Jeff Hurwitz, say the government spending cuts will not harm long-term consumer spending.

“I don’t believe it is going to affect things because people will see how minor it is. And it won’t be an issue,” Hurwitz said.

Frederick was recently given an award as a comeback city, one of a few places across the country that has been able to bounce back well from the recent recession. The people here say, despite sequestration, this community will again be able to come back strong.

North Dakota Republican Sen. Margaret is the primary sponsor of a bill that the North Dakota Legislature passed Friday that would ban abortion by defining human life as beginning at conception, at the state Capitol in Bismarck, Mar. 22, 2013.

The North Dakota legislature has passed a bill that would essentially ban abortions by defining life as starting at conception.

The North Dakota House approved the bill Friday on a 57-35 vote. The state Senate approved the bill last month, but the Republican governor, John Dalrymple, still must sign the measure before it can become law. It is not clear whether he will sign the measure.

The bill is the latest in a series that North Dakota lawmakers have passed this year to take away abortion rights.

Abortion rights advocates deplore the so-called “personhood” measure as unconstitutional. The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in the 1973 Roe v. Wade case legalized abortion until a fetus is “viable”- usually determined to be after 22-24 weeks of development.

A bill that bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected is already awaiting the governor’s signature.

The issue of same-sex marriage heads to the U.S. Supreme Court March 26 and 27.

The high court will hear a challenge to California’s ban on gay marriage and will also consider a federal law that defines marriage solely as the union of a man and a woman.

Supporters of gay marriage believe public momentum is on their side as they prepare for two legal showdowns at the Supreme Court.

“We’ve gone from zero states to now nine states plus the District of Columbia, our nation’s capital here in the U.S., and 14 countries on four continents where gay people can now share in the freedom to marry – all up from virtually zero a little more than a decade ago,” said Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry.

Recent polls show growing support for gay marriage in the U.S., especially among young people, says Quinnipiac pollster Peter Brown.

“There is no doubt that we in this country are in the midst of a change in attitude about gay issues, gay-rights issues and gay marriage. Over the last five to seven years it has changed dramatically,” Brown said.

Two separate cases on same-sex marriage are before the Supreme Court.

In one, the high court will decide whether California’s ban on gay marriage known as Proposition 8 is constitutional.

In the second case the Supreme Court will consider a challenge to a 1996 federal law known as the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

Conservative opponents of gay marriage have been preparing for the legal battles, including Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council.

“Society needs children. Children need a mom and a dad. That’s why we think marriage should be defined as the union of one man and one woman,” Sprigg said.

Sprigg says conservatives will be closely watching to see if the Supreme Court overturns the California ballot initiative banning gay marriage.

“If the court decides that it is a violation of the United States Constitution to limit marriage to the union of one man and one woman then they could theoretically impose the legalization of same-sex marriage on all 50 states in the union,” Sprigg said.

Wolfson says the question is whether the nine-member Supreme Court will reflect or reject what he believes is growing public support for same-sex marriage.

“People have had a chance to see it with their own eyes. It went from being an abstract idea that was easy to scare people about into a reality that people now see in many states and many countries. Families helped and no one hurt when we end this discrimination,” Wolfson said.

The political winds appear to be shifting on gay marriage. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton opposed the idea during her presidential run in 2008. But she recently came out in favor of it in a Web video produced by the Human Rights Campaign, a leading gay-rights group.

“And they are full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship. That includes marriage,” Clinton said.

Republican Senator Rob Portman of Ohio surprised fellow conservatives with his recent switch to support gay marriage because his son is gay.

But others remain opposed, including Florida Senator Marco Rubio, a possible presidential contender in 2016.

“Just because I believe that states have the right to define marriage in the traditional way does not make me a bigot,” Rubio said.

The Supreme Court will issue rulings in the two gay marriage cases by the end of June.

In a year of little progress for democracy around the world, China has once more ranked among the lowest on a 2012 global democracy index, while Hong Kong moved up a few places based on rising levels of public participation in politics.

The index, published annually by the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU), ranked the People’s Republic of China 142nd out of 165 independent states and two territories, among the “authoritarian regime” category.

By contrast, Hong Kong moved upwards to 63rd place, putting it in the “flawed democracy” category along with France.

The index calculates a country’s ranking on a scale of 0 to 10, including 60 separate measures that include electoral process and pluralism, levels of political participation, civil liberties and government performance.

Britain and the United States were ranked at the lower end of the 25 “full democracies” that scored between 8 and 10 points.

A score lower than 4 puts a country into the “authoritarian regime” category.

China moved up one position compared with the 2011 index, behind Yemen and Belarus but ranking higher than Vietnam and the Republic of Congo.

Lost years

Guangzhou-based rights lawyer Sui Muqing said he felt that China’s decline had begun a decade ago, at a time when other countries were progressing up the democratic scale.

“Other countries have been improving their own political culture and civilization, while China has consistently failed to uphold even its previous standards,” Sui said. “If anything, things have got worse, beginning in about 2003.”

“The past 10 years have been about stability maintenance, a period during which we lost a lot of ground on human rights and the rule of law.”

He added that single party rule is enshrined in China’s Constitution, making Beijing’s status on the index unsurprising.

The index showed that around 2.6 billion people, about one third of the global population, still live under some form of authoritarian rule, while only 11 percent of people live in a full democracy.

Norway was the most democratic country in the world last year, according to the index, which said that developed countries have been losing ground on democracy.

Washington politics “continues to be paralysed by polarization” while London faces a “deep institutional crisis,” it said.

Poll turnout

Hong Kong, where political pressure is building in favor of universal elections in spite of hints from Chinese officials that this won’t happen soon, scored 6.42 last year compared with 5.92 in 2011.

The EIU said the reason for the rise in ranking was a greater level of influence over the outcome of last year’s elections to the territory’s legislature, which saw higher turnout than in previous years.

Directly elected legislators now account for more than half of seats in the Legislative Council, and even the closely controlled race for chief executive was clearly influenced by public opinion, EIU Asia director Simon Baptist told Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post.

“Hong Kong’s vibrant non-governmental organisations, judicial independence, social tolerance and free media continue also to contribute towards its democracy score,” the paper quoted Baptist as saying.

Hong Kong current affairs commentator Poon Siu-to said he was skeptical about the ranking, however.

“This is a long way from what we are seeing [here in Hong Kong],” Poon said. “There has been no change in the fundamental status of Hong Kong’s democracy; things are the same as they were before.”

“The entire government is moving backwards, whether it be on the rule of law, or respect for freedoms, and protection for freedom of the press,” he said.

Call for full elections

Momentum is building in the former British colony for a second “Occupy” movement in the city’s downtown business district, to press the authorities to allow full and direct elections for the legislature and the chief executive.

However, Chinese officials have hinted that they are unlikely to OK a full democracy by 2020, as permitted in the mini-constitution, the Basic Law.

Anxiety over the city’s political future sparked an “Occupy Central” movement in the downtown business district last year, with participants calling for universal suffrage by the next election.

On Jan. 1 of this year, tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Hong Kong to demand the resignation of embattled chief executive Leung Chun-ying and universal elections for his replacement.

Leung was narrowly selected for the chief executive job this year by a pro-Beijing committee.

Under the terms of its 1997 handover to China, Hong Kong was guaranteed the continuation of existing freedoms of expression and association for 50 years.

But journalists and political analysts say that the ruling Chinese Communist Party has redoubled its ideological work efforts in the territory following mass demonstrations on July 1, 2003 against proposed anti-subversion legislation, which the government later abandoned.

Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats Dana Rohrabacher.

Members of a U.S. congressional panel have expressed concern about the threat cyber attacks from other nations pose to U.S. national security.  Some lawmakers are calling on the Obama administration to make sure governments which might be encouraging or tolerating cyber attacks know that these incidents will have serious consequences.

The Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats has called on the Obama administration to do more than just issue stern warning statements to China and other nations.

Subcommittee chairman Dana Rohrabacher was among the lawmakers who said that what we are now seeing is more than just individual acts of corporate espionage.

“China, Iran, North Korea and Russia have all used cyber attacks aimed at strategic infrastructure targets,” said Rohrabacher. “Targets that would be attacked in another way if there was a war.”

Rohrabacher, a Republican from California, said President Barack Obama needs to do more than just raise the issue with Chinese leaders.  He says the president needs to spell out what consequences cyber attacks will have.  Ranking member William Keating, a Democrat from Massachusetts, believes an international cyber security framework is needed.

“Further, the Internet is an open international domain, and cyber crimes clearly go beyond traditional law enforcement models,” said Keating. “For this reason, national policies are incomplete without firm, international, cyber security standards and norms between like-minded allies.”

Several of the lawmakers and witnesses said they feel the Chinese government, in particular, is getting away with the large-scale theft of U.S. intellectual property and other cyber attacks without facing any consequences.

“The Chinese government cannot think of enough things to do with the money that they have been earning from the economic warfare that they have been executing against the United States,” said Greg Autry, senior economist with the Coalition for a Prosperous America.

Senior Obama administration officials said they have made it clear to China and other countries that cyber attacks must end.  The Chinese government has said that it is a victim, and not a perpetrator, of cyber attacks.

A Washington-based organization that monitors human rights in North Korea says hackers attacked its website on the same day a cyber attack hit South Korean banks and broadcasters.

Greg Scarlatoiu, the executive director for the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, reported that unidentified hackers shut down his website for several hours Wednesday, removing reports that highlighted abuses in the North.

“Instead of satellite photos of political prison camp number 25, I saw a message reading ‘Hitman 007 – Kingdom of Morocco.’ And as we went into more depth, we noticed that all of our publications had been taken out,” Scarlatoiu explained.

He says his group has not confirmed who is responsible for the attack. But Scarlatoiu says circumstantial evidence suggests a North Korea-related entity is to blame.

“First and foremost, what this organization has been doing for the past 12 years is exclusively dedicated to North Korean human rights. We don’t address the Middle East, we do not address any other areas of the world,” he says. “Secondly, this attack happened at the same time a massive cyber attack was conducted against targets inside South Korea.”

Wednesday, a concerted cyber attack paralyzed computer networks at several major South Korean broadcasters and banks. South Korean officials have traced the virus to a Chinese IP address. But Seoul is investigating whether North Korea may have routed the attack through China, as it is believed to have done in the past.

Scarlatoiu also points out that the attack on his organization occurred a day before the United Nations Human Rights Council was set to vote on the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry on North Korea’s human rights situation.

He says his organization was the first group to propose the establishment of the commission and has been working behind the scenes to push for its formation.

Earlier this month, a special U.N. investigator on North Korea, Marzuki Darusman, told the Geneva-based council that Pyongyang’s violations, including torture, enslavement, enforced disappearances and murder, could amount to crimes against humanity.

The council was expected to approve the creation of the commission – the first of its kind to look into North Korean human rights. North Korea denies it is committing human rights abuses, saying such claims are meant to sabotage its government.

The United Nations has established a commission to investigate human rights violations in North Korea, saying some of them may amount to “crimes against humanity.” The U.N. Human Rights Council unanimously passed a resolution Thursday to create the commission, which will probe “systematic, widespread and grave” rights violations in North Korea. The resolution also condemns alleged torture and labor camps for political prisoners in North Korea.

The European Union and Japan presented the resolution, with backing from the United States.

Human rights groups have long called for international efforts to stop North Korean rights abuses, thought to be among the worst in the world.

The group Human Rights Watch said the U.N. inquiry will help expose “decades of abuse” by North Korea’s government.

North Korean officials have denied allegations that Pyongyang is committing human rights abuses.

A U.N.-appointed human rights authority, Marzuki Darusman, recently recommended a probe into violations in North Korea. In a report to the U.N. Human Rights Council, Darusman said a probe will help pressure Pyongyang to improve conditions. The report described abuses including murder, enslavement, imprisonment, torture, political and religious persecution, and kidnappings. Darusman also said conditions in North Korea have worsened since Kim Jong Un took power following the death in 2011 of his father, Kim Jong Il.

North Korea’s delegate to the U.N. Human Rights Council, Choi Seokyoung, said Darusman’s report was part of a Western-led conspiracy against his government.

Support for a U.N. inquiry has been mounting, partly because Russia and China — traditional allies of North Korea — have rotated out of the human rights council.

director said, following a delay caused by a security agency that expressed reservations about the title.

“Jews of Egypt” will screen on March 27, director Amir Ramses said on Wednesday after the censor’s office told him it had decided to license the film.

He said the censor had attributed the hold-up to concerns on the part of security officials, highlighting the influence that security agencies still wield after the 2011 revolution that swept former President Hosni Mubarak from power.

The film depicts changes in Egyptian society’s acceptance of its Jewish minority in the first half of the 20th century.

Most Jews fled the country due to attacks on their community, particularly after the 1956 war, when Israel invaded Egypt along with Britain and France, which were trying to regain control of the Suez Canal.

The film was initially approved last year by the censor’s office, but its license had expired in October, Ramses said.

When reviewing the most recent request for a license, Abdel Sattar Fathy, head of the censorship office, said he had come across a security note stating that the film was not for “public screening due to it being a documentary.”

In a March 12 interview with Al-Ahram online, Fathy said he then followed up with the security apparatus.

“They told me that the name of the film could cause great doubt in the general situation in the country,” he said.

Justifying their concerns, the security officials cited controversy last year over comments by a top member of the Muslim Brotherhood’s political party who called for Jews of Egyptian descent to return to Egypt from Israel.

In addition, they cited “the current complicated conditions in the street.”

Speaking to Reuters by telephone, Ramses said cited public criticism as one reason for the decision to allow the film.

“It is both surprising and unsurprising, given the pressure they faced,” he said.

The film will be screened at two cinemas in Cairo and a third in Alexandria

China has unblocked the popular entertainment website IMDB (Internet Movie Database), which has been blocked since 2010.

“I know very few cases where a site that’s been blocked for a long time is unblocked,” said Doug Young, a journalism professor at Fudan University in Shanghai and author of the new book The Party Line: How the Media Dictates Public Opinion in Modern China. “No reason is ever given. People are always left to guess.”

No reason for blocking IMDB was ever given, but Young speculates that there might be movies or TV shows or comments that were critical of China. Blocking of IMDB began about a year after popular sites such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter also were blocked. Those sites remain blocked.

“The timing is very unusual because typically in the run up to the big Communist Party meeting, they tend to crack down more,” said Young. “They censor more, and things tend to get more heavy handed.”

Access to IMDB in China was first reported in earlier this month by the South China Morning Post, but Young said it’s possible the site may have been unblocked for months.

Young speculated that China’s rulers might be beginning to realize how powerful new media can be.

“The media has become an incredibly powerful tool, with online sleuths that dig up dirt and post pictures,” he said. “The leaders think media, especially new media, is a useful tool for the Communist Party to achieve its objectives like rooting out corruption.”
