Crime Prevention Studies, Volume 26: Preventing Crowd Violence. Crowd management is a fundamental police function in all societies. This task is complex and demanding. Police must address safety concerns in highly diverse environments and among heterogeneous collections of crowd participants, while adapting to dynamic and sometimes volatile situations with existing resources and limited information. Police must also accomplish seemingly conflicting goals when managing crowds.<div class="feedflare">

In an easy 25 steps, this manual shows security professionals how to select and implement appropriate countermeasures to reduce the opportunities for the everyday crimes that are the most common threats to assets and targets that security professionals must protect. Drawing on problem-oriented policing and situational crime prevention the manual is essential reading for security professionals, facility managers, risk managers, property managers, and as well for both public and private police who are concerned with everyday crime problems in business settings.<div class="feedflare">

CRISP Report - Preventing Burglary in Commercial and Institutional Settings: A Place Management and Partnerships Approach

In this report Tim Prenzler, PhD, looks at how to assess, manage, and respond to burglaries that occur at commercial and industrial sites. While there is a considerable amount written about domestic burglary, research is less in evidence when the locale is non-residential. His report looks at the context in which burglaries occur, and includes a consideration of the burglar's approach. He examines a range of solutions, which aim to make it more difficult for would be offenders particularly in the workplace, and he shows where security managers can have an impact.<div class="feedflare">

Assigning Police Officers to Schools

This guide summarizes the typical duties of SROs, synthesizes the research pertaining to their effectiveness, and presents issues for communities to bear in mind when considering the adoption of an SRO model. It will be apparent that despite their popularity, few systematic evaluations of the effectiveness of SROs exist. This is a concern as evidence from evaluative research can usefully inform future SRO programs. Consequently, this guide identifies the type of data that can be collected in order to measure program effectiveness. This guide does not provide a history of SRO programs nor does it describe in detail the myriad types of SRO models currently available. Similarly, although this guide highlights specific issues that communities considering the implementation of SRO programs should bear in mind (such as the legal issues that apply to police officers in schools), it is not an authoritative guide to the legal or other special issues that must be addressed with such programs. The guide does however provide additional resources for readers who wish to research these issues.<div class="feedflare">

Theft of Customers' Personal Property in Cafes and Bars

We begin this guide by describing the problem of theft of customers' personal property from cafés and bars and reviewing associated risk factors. We then identify a series of questions to help you analyze your local problem, and, finally, review responses to this type of problem. At present, evaluative research-whether carried out independently or by the police-is scarce; consequently it is not possible to draw any firm conclusions as to which responses to theft of customers' personal property from cafés and bars are the most effective. Nevertheless, we review several responses to this problem and make tentative statements as to their effectiveness.<div class="feedflare">

Stolen Goods Markets

This guide addresses the problem of stolen goods markets. The guide begins by describing the problem, then provides advice on how best to analyze local, national, or international stolen goods markets; reviews tactics that you can use to detect those involved in stealing, dealing, and using stolen goods; and suggests ways to assess the tactics' likely effectiveness in specific situations and locations. The ultimate aim of reducing stolen goods markets is to make it more difficult and risky for people to trade in stolen goods and thereby discourage stealing in the first place.<div class="feedflare">
