The Gift of Giving

The holidays are always a time of surplus good cheer and great food, when we're reminded of our own good fortune and inspired to share it with those not so lucky; and in this period of economic strain, acts of generosity are increasingly welcome. The following organizations, committed to fighting hunger and homelessness, count on donations and the work of volunteers to keep needy Chicagoans fed and housed. The gift of your time or a few extra bucks in food and supplies could make someone's holidays a lot brighter.

Greater Chicago Food Depository
4100 W. Ann Lurie Place, (773) 247-3663
Food pantries, homeless shelters and soup kitchens across Chicago depend on the Greater Chicago Food Depository to furnish their meals. Not surprisingly, demand for donated food has been steadily rising, so now is the ideal time to dig deep and chip in. Dry, canned, frozen and refrigerated foods are all suitable for donation to the Depository. Volunteers are needed weekday mornings to load trucks for distribution, stock the shelves at the Agency Mart?a storefront that supplies local pantries?and make delivery and pickup runs. Extra hands are sought Tuesdays through Saturdays to repack bulk items into family-size boxes.

You don't have to travel to 42nd Place and Pulaski to help out. Dominick's and ABC7 partner each holiday season to benefit the GCFD. The goal this year is to collect one million pounds of food, so remember to pick up a few extra goodies November 3 through January 3 of next year to drop in donation barrels located by Dominick's checkout lines. You can make depository donations at many area Whole Foods locations, too.

Lakeview Pantry
East: 3831 N. Broadway, (773) 525-1777
West: 1414 W. Oakdale, (773) 404-6333
With two locations, the Lakeview Pantry can use helping hands almost every day of the week. Food Distribution East seeks volunteers Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from noon to 4 p.m. to restock and repack food, work the counter and sort clothes. Help out at Food Distribution West Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-8 p.m. or Saturdays from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Home delivery volunteers are welcome two Saturdays each month. If you'd like to make a monetary contribution that lasts into the New Year, the Pantry allows you to set up an automated monthly deduction of $10 or more. With just a few clicks, you can help fight hunger year-round.

Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation
4345 W. Division, (773) 252-3663
This organization not only feeds 150,000 people each month, but also strives to educate youth about healthy eating through Project Newtrition and train the unemployed and underemployed in culinary skills in Oliver's Kitchen. The Anti-Hunger Federation accepts non-perishable items like canned foods, boxed cereals and bottled juice as well as tax-deductible monetary donations.

North Park Friendship Center
3448 W. Foster, (773) 267-8395
Donations of food, clothing, toys, books, blankets and kitchen wares are all welcome at this storefront on Foster and Kimball. Serving one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Chicago, the North Park Friendship Center is always in need of volunteer translators fluent in Russian, Spanish, Arabic or Vietnamese.

Common Pantry
3744 N. Damen, (773) 327-0553
Bring non-perishable food, clothing and personal care items to this North Side pantry, located in the Epiphany United Church of Christ. Lend a hand stocking the shelves Mondays and Wednesdays or assembling grocery deliveries one Saturday each month. The Common Pantry also accepts donations of used ink cartridges, which can be mailed in for cash courtesy non-profit organization reycle4charity.com.

Deborah's Place
multiple locations, (773) 722-5080
This women's shelter, with locations in Lakeview and Old Town, needs volunteers to help serve dinner in the evenings. Or contribute your talents by teaching arts and crafts, tutoring at the learning center, helping out with the website or joining in fundraising efforts.

Breakthrough Urban Ministries
402 N. St. Louis, (773) 722-1144
Help serve breakfast, lunch or dinner at one of two locations once a month or volunteer to tutor youth once a week for a full semester. Volunteers are also sought for urban outreach to women struggling with addiction, teachers' assistants for pre-kindergarten kids and to coach basketball, soccer, baseball and T-ball.

Inspiration Corporation
multiple locations, (773) 878-0981
This organization dedicated to fighting homelessness seeks volunteers age 14 and up to cook, serve and pack bag lunches at two kitchens: the Inspiration Cafe [4554 N. Broadway] and the Living Room Cafe [806 E. 64th]. Tutors, yoga instructors, computer class instructors and those willing to help coach job training skills like resume writing and interviewing are always welcome.

United Church of Rogers Park
1545 W. Morse, (773) 761-2500
Each Sunday, the United Church of Rogers Park hosts a "community feast" at 5 p.m., open to all. Drop by early to help prepare the meal or head over Saturday morning to help bake the dozen pies served at the feast each week.

St. Ignatius Food Pantry
6559 N. Glenwood, (773) 764-5936
The St. Ignatius Food Pantry is seeking volunteers (especially those who speak Spanish or Russian) for help preparing meals and feeding the homeless. Volunteers are sought for help Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age to participate.

Leslie's Place
1014 N. Hamlin, (773) 342-8384
If you're looking to volunteer by helping prepare meals, Leslie's Place on the city's West Side is in need of volunteers Tuesday through Friday each week. Volunteers can participate in a group.

Third Sunday Food Pantry
5443 S. Washtenaw, (773) 419-6141
The Third Sunday Food Pantry is seeking volunteers to help prepare and distribute food, and to help with crowd control. Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age to help and can participate in a group.

Got more to give? Check out these websites:

Virtual Food Drive
Don't have extra items to donate from your pantry? Even if you've got nothing extra to spare from the kitchen cabinets, you can still help donate food. Many companies have begun "virtual food" drives ? where you can virtually shop for items and donate without having to handle or drop off those extra cans. Donors get an instant receipt confirming their donation, and all money donated is restricted to food purchasing.

America's Second Harvest
It's the country's "food bank network" ? fighting hunger not only in the Chicago area, but across the nation. You'll find info on how to donate food in your area, corporate and personal volunteer opportunities across the country, and ways to donate money toward the fight against hunger. The group collects more than 2 billion pounds of food and grocery products each year. Ever wonder how the food you donate gets to those who are hungry? The group breaks the collection down into five steps, and shows you how your contribution really does make a difference.

Chicago Cares
Since 1991, Chicago Cares has created, managed, and led 20,000 community service projects, offered Chicagoans more than 275,000 volunteer opportunities, and dedicated 875,000 hours of service to the City of Chicago. These programs help meet the most pressing needs in education (adult and children), hunger, health and wellness, senior services, and environment and rehabilitation.

This Octoberfest-themed pub crawl brings together a crowd in West Lakeview for food, drink specials and prizes. The night begins at Frasca with $3 Sam Adams Octoberfest and free slices (one per person) of Octoberfest beer-crusted pizza (the restaurant will also have a one-night-only special pie, featuring German Brats with wood-roasted onions, available for $10), then moves on to Finley Dunne's Tavern, The Shire, Fizz Bar & Grill and The Pony.

Hyde Park Jazz Festival
Saturday in Hyde Park; free
This 14-hour, multi-venue event is like a marathon for music fans, and, like any long race, the true rewards are near the finish line, with exciting performers like 8 Bold Souls, Garaj Mahal and Dee Alexander. Remember to pace yourself and stay hydrated as you travel to unlikely music spots like the International House of Chicago, Hyde Park Bank and Little Black Pearl Art and Design Center.

Chinatown Moon Festival
noon-10 p.m. Saturday at 2100 S. Wentworth
The Chicago version of this traditional Chinese harvest celebration offers up Chinese dances, Kung Fu demonstrations, a family talent show, food (try the mooncakes, flaky pastries stuffed with a variety of fillings like egg yolk and red bean paste), an Elvis impersonator and more.

Rib-a-Que Smoke-Out
If you're not quite up for the orgy of culinary masters that will be the second Chicago Gourmet at Millennium Park, this more chill event is a good substitute (and one of those high-class chefs, Stephanie Izard, will be a celebrity judge along with Chris Koetke of Kendall College). But you'd better like ribs, as there will be tons of options to choose from - plus $5 Jack Daniels Lynchburg Lemonade and Downhome Punch, $4 pints/$12 pitchers of Moonshine beers and live music from Matt Tyner, Chris Gelbuda and the Steve Sebby Trio.

Banned Books Read-Out
noon Saturday at Bughouse Square (901 N. Clark); free
Lolita. Tropic of Cancer. 1984. These are just a few of the many fine books that have been banned or at least threatened with censorship over the years. Banned Books Week, which begins on Saturday and runs through October 3, is one way to fight back. Things kick off with these annual event featuring several targeted authors reading their work, including Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell (And Tango Makes Three), Cecily von Ziegesar (the Gossip Girl series and Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower). City Lit Theatre will also perform work from other frequently challenged authors.

Killer Costumes

If you learned anything from last year's thrown-together Jesus/homeless man outfit, it's that you've got to start planning for Halloween early, before all the good getups are gone and the lines are out the door. Not sure where to start? We've got a monster list of area shops with the gear you'll need to create a contest-winning costume. So get to browsing...and if you happen upon a Fort Wayne Mad Ant outfit, please, please, please let us know.

Fantasy Costumes
With a location spanning an entire block on Milwaukee and an 800-USA-WIGS phone number, Fantasy is all business when it comes to your Halloween costume. Specializing in new and old pop-culture icons, like Harry Potter, and an adult selection fit for a Comic Con convention, this shop claims it can get its claws on any outfit you dream up. Good news for those nocturnal types that only wake during full moons: Fantasy's online selection is convenient and far-reaching.

Ragstock
One of the liveliest Halloween destinations in Lakeview?and the go-to spot for ironic decade costumes?Ragstock has your '50s- to '90s-inspired outfits covered. Amongst '80s prom apparel and Richie Tenenbaum-inspired sweatbands, hipsters and yuppies rub elbows in search of the perfect find. Though the selection predictably thins out come Halloween, the prices here are retro-inspired. Occasionally, Ragstock has been known to stock specialty items like used roller skates, but you'll have to get there quick. If you really can't find what you want here, the Wicker Park and Woodfield Mall locations have a decent selection of new and used clothing and accessories, too.

Batteries Not Included
With a namesake that (we like to think) was inspired by the '80s flick about alien mechanical life-forms, this spot offers the kind of kitsch you'll usually find draped around brides-to-be. Yet, aside from the stand-by risque accessories, Batteries sells costume sets from $20-$1,000 and has an extensive closet of options (there's even more at the Wicker Park location). Garb skews toward the revealing, but if you're doing an "adult take" on an old classic, be sure to stop in.

Beatnix
If you're seeking blindingly metallic platform shoes, an eye-raising makeup section, disco balls and an impressive selection of wigs, Beatnix has you covered for campy glamour and drag-queen vamping. $20-$400 will cover you here?even if your costume doesn't. For boys that, sigh, will be boys, Beatnix also stocks good-quality, used tuxes and some reasonably priced second-hand clothes.

Belmont Army Surplus
The second incarnation of Belmont Army and Supply houses roughly a quarter of the stock that the Lakeview flagship location (R.I.P.) did. But, if you happen to be going as Tank Girl or Camo Ninja, this is the best spot in Wicker Park. Head downstairs for an army field day: Vintage bomber jackets, combat boots and a random smattering of '80s sportswear (like ski hats and windbreakers) take up the small but deep basement space. Located right off the Division Blue Line, this is an easy spot to go MIA for an hour or two.

Broadway Costumes
With a 20,000-foot space, this is the Midwest's largest source for masquerade events. It outfits masquerade balls and national opera productions across the country, and even has Second City as a client. So, while much of Broadway's inventory is probably overkill for that Wrigleyville pub crawl you had planned, you can count on these guys if you're looking for a standing O. Though Broadway requires a pretty hefty rental deposit, it allots a two-night rental period.

Chicago Costume
The go-to spot for both extensively planned outfits and last-minute getups, Chicago Costume services DePaul country and beyond. If you're going to ask one of the knowledgeable staff members for his or her input, make sure you're specific: There are at least a dozen takes on obscure choices, like Dorothy and Toto, and an overwhelming amount of classics. Those looking for finishing touches for near-perfect costumes can count on Chicago Costume for a wealth of accessories, like gangster chains, golf visors and baseball socks. The basement operation rents out anything from Santa Claus costumes to banana suits (for $65-$125), and they'll even email you pictures of what's available so you don't make an unnecessary trip. The shop opens up four additional locations in October (1201 N. Clark; 939 W. North; 651 W. Diversey; and 1963 N. Elston),and there's also a separate, kids-only shop just down the street (1331 W. Fullerton).

Hollywood Mirror
Hollywood is worth a trip even on non-holidays; those looking for the funkiest, '70s-inspired duds will do well with the vintage racks here). For the big day, guys will find a satisfying selection of leather jackets and ugly sweaters, while aspiring tarts will love the '40s-inspired kicks and dresses. The prices may be a bit higher than at Ragstock, its upstairs neighbor, but you're sure to find at least one kitschy item to kick-start your costume. If all else fails, though, pick up a plastic hand-shaped chair and call it a day: Shopping can be so unglamorous!

Lost Eras
Theatrical makeup and antique props set this Rogers Park costumer apart from other spots. Though it primarily supplies local theater companies and shows, Lost Eras lets customers rent from its extensive costume department. Additionally, the retail selection is surprisingly affordable: Pick up anything from Star Trek jumpsuits, costing around $30, all the way up to a Victorian-Era getup for around $200.

Magical Mystery Tour
The suburban haven for pranksters and amateur magicians, Magical Mystery Tour also stocks a solid Halloween section. You'll find a few interesting items, such as handmade Mardi Gras masks and pet costumes, as well as a bunch of those outfits that come in plastic bags. Either way, this store is a trip!

Mar Ray Costumes
Palatine's year-round cove of fright and delight, Mar Ray specializes in your standard makeup and fake blood offerings, as well as a notable selection of second-hand and vintage clothes. Though some of the masks look like they've been around for a while, you have to give Mar Ray props for its prices: Rentals go for $50, with a three-day time rental period.

Party City
This one-stop shop for gloriously obnoxious trinkets, like noisemakers and glitter guns, tricks out into a Halloween costume and supply store come October. If you're looking for a dirt-cheap superhero costume that will carry you through a weekend's worth of both hard drinking and serious ghouling, swing by the City. But don't forget the noisemakers!

Strange Cargo
Wondering how to express your love for the night of ghosts and goblins? Say it with Strange Cargo: Steps from Wrigley Field, the shop lets you choose your own iron-on graphic for a custom Halloween t-shirt. With a variety of retro tchotchkes and a decent selection of wigs, Strange is also a good bet for last-minute touches and Halloween basics.

Other spots to stake out:

Spirit Halloween
This transient costume shop mysteriously pops up before the big holiday. Take advantage.

Salvation Army
Salvation Army is a classic standby for rare goods and assorted accessories like roller skates and golf clubs.

Army Navy Surplus Store
This general thrift store and good spot for in-depth army costumes has several Chicago locations.

Be the (G)host with the Most

photo: Sharon Hoyer; Lost Era's garbs

Your buddies refuse to spend another Halloween getting hit on by Darth Vader at a packed, beer-soaked bar. We understand; there comes a time when only a house party will do, so do your darnedest to throw the craziest pumpkin bash this side of Lake Eerie by trekking to these spots for some ghoulish goods.

Deck out at Lost Eras
First things first: You need a costume. Lost Eras, Chicago's largest costume shop/flea market/curio store, has two overstuffed floors of wild clothing, antique furniture, stage props and a hodge-podge of miscellaneous wares. No estate sale can match this place when it comes to aimless browsing. Need a lamp shaped like a Smith and Wesson pistol circa 1890? It's got it. What about that motorized belt contraption that was a weight-loss craze in the '50s? Ditto. Or, need a ham radio for your Ken Burns theme party? Lost Eras has ten. But if you can't take three solid days to glean the racks, you might want to plan out your getup in advance and ask for guidance from the helpful staff. Those folks, somewhat miraculously, know the location of every fat suit, bunny head and pill-box hat in the store. Costumes with all the trimmings are available for rent or sale. Two-day rentals average $50-$60, depending on how extravagant you want to get. If you can't get to Lost Eras, try one of these other costume shops.

photo: Julia Steinberger; treats from Tipsy

Drink your booze and eat it too with spooky treats from Tipsycake
Unfortunate wardrobe choices and apple-induced asphyxiation aside, let's not forget the most beloved Halloween tradition: sugar overdosing. And if that sugar should happen to come steeped in spiced rum, well, so much the better. In honor of All Hallows Eve, Naomi Levine, owner of Tipsycake, is once again whipping up "designated driver required" rum-soaked pumpkin spice cupcakes, frosted with Italian buttercream ghosts and jack-o-lanterns ($2.75 each). Expecting vegans at your soiree? Tipsycake will make any item on the menu cruelty-free. Just be sure to place your order at least a day in advance; the bakery eliminates overstock and waste by making everything to order.

Get Jack at Adams & Son Gardens
To decorate your digs, all you really need is a few well-carved pumpkins scattered about the party scene. So after you've gotten your baked goods buzz on, stop by the friendliest little garden store in the city, just a half block north of Tipsycake. This family-owned nursery has handsome pumpkins by the refrigerator box-full, and at an unbeatable price: $3 for mid-size carve-ables, $5 for the big guys. Decorative and pie pumpkins go for only a buck. You can load up a hand truck with fresh lobotomy patients for a ten spot, but bring a Jackson to cover additional decorative gourds and a gooseneck squash or two.

photo: Sharon Hoyer; making friends at Garden Patch

Bob for the best at Garden Patch Farms and Orchard
It doesn't take much more than a rousing round of apple bobbing to really get a party going. But why pick through the grocery bin for your fruit when you can travel a scant 45 minutes and pluck 'em straight from the tree (and make clucking sounds at a pen full of chickens while you're at it)? At Garden Patch Farms, located in the southwest suburb of Homer Glen, you can spend a day taking brisk strolls through the trees, gorging yourself on over 60 varieties of ripe autumn apples. October is the month for sweet Fujis, Braeburns and Suncrisps?and tart Granny Smiths if you're of the baking inclination. By the time you've sampled every variety, you'll readily let that Zombie Spice Girl cut in front of you to plunge face-first in the tub. Still feeling picky? Try one of these harvesting spots.

Other party-supply haunts to explore:

Sweet Cakes
Don't forget the pumpkin pie. Emily Smith and her father, Vernon, provide the traditional autumn dessert, as well as signature seasonal treats like savory mushroom scones, at this tucked-away shop.

Ninety-Ninth Floor
Let's be honest: A good percentage of us treat Halloween as an excuse to wear clothing that would otherwise land us in handcuffs (wink, wink). If Lost Eras is more G-rated than you had in mind, head to Boystown and pick up those vinyl britches or skyscraper stilettos you've been dreaming of.

West Lakeview Liquors
If you forget to whip up a batch of witches brew, have no fear; the folks at this neighborhood liquor shop stock all the booze you'll need. Expect a good selection of seasonal suds, shelves lined with affordable wines and a storefront decorated with fall-friendly dried cornstalks to boot.

Lucha Va Voom

Lucha Va Voom
8:30 p.m. Friday at Congress Theater, $25-$60
If you like your Mexican midget wrestling with a splash of skin (and who doesn't?) this event is for you. Top-ranked luchadoritos battle it out in the ring while scantily clad burlesque dancers provide entertainment between matches. Now that's what we call entertainment.

Berghoff Oktoberfest
11 a.m.-9 p.m. through Friday at Federal Plaza (Adams & Dearborn), free
Get the polka party started with plenty of music, brats and Berghoff beer (and root beer). The Johnny Wagner Band kicks things off each day around noon with traditional polka music, followed by headlining acts Maggie Speaks (Friday), Sixteen Candles (Saturday) and Modern Day Romeos (Sunday). There are also raffles, Berghoff CEO Carolyn Berghoff signing copies of her restaurant's cookbook and the famed Märzen-style Berghoff Oktoberfest beer.

Landshark Lager Oyster Fest
11 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday at Damen and Roscoe
There's no better way to usher out summer than with oysters and beer, and there will be plenty of both at this fest's new Roscoe Village location. A quality music lineup features the requisite block party bands (Hello Dave, Trippin Billies), semi-stars Marcy Playground and the Von Bondies, followed by headliner Soul Asylum at 8:30.

Musky Fest
11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Saturday at Will's Northwoods Inn, free
Who will be this year's Musky Queen? You'll have to head to Will's to find out. WXRT's Lin Brehmer hosts this tribute to the musky - a Great Lakes fish similar to a pike, for those who aren't in the know. The all-day fest features two stages of live music, Leinenkugels beer (Dick Leinenkugel is the Grand Marshall) and the crowning of the best guest bartender, aka the Musky Queen, at 10 p.m.

BLK JKS

BLK JKS, Fool's Gold
9 p.m. Sunday at Bottom Lounge, $12
You can't go wrong at any of the week-long World Music Festival's acts, but if you're looking for a way to ease into the new sounds while still staying true to your inner American, this show should be your first foray. Fool's Gold's grooves are rooted in African and Middle Eastern rhythms (guitar-centric, not horn-heavy) but add plenty of Western pop styles (they're based in L.A.) to keep things from getting too, you know, weird. Meanwhile, South African band BLK JKS offers a sound densely packed with influences ranging from psychedelic rock and dub to jazz and funk. Read more about the entire festival here.

Just missed the cut: Naperville Wine Festival, Taste of Downers Grove, Bruce Springsteen (Sunday at United Center), Englewood Jazz Festival, Harvest Jam '09

Art aficionados have had Friday circled on the calender for months, as popular galleries like Aldo Castillo, Catherine Edelman and Nicole Smith show off the season's new works. If you want to hit as many as possible in one night, take the trolley, sponsored by Art Chicago and Chicago Gallery News.

German Day Festival (aka German-American Festival)
Friday-Sunday at 4700 N. Lincoln (Lincoln Square), free
Dance to the traditional German music with the mix of locals and college kids. When you get tired, try out the food and drink ? beer for $5-8 (with refills for $4-7; or free for the ceremonial first keg) and bratwurst and thueringer sandwiches with sauerkraut or potato salad for $5. The festival coincides with the annual Von Steuben parade on Saturday starting at 2 p.m.

Battle of the Bands
9 p.m. Friday at Silvie's Lounge, free
Who's got the funniest band in town? Come vote for your favorite at this North Center music joint. Among the competitors: The Band of 1000 Names, The Ronject, Kevin and Lola Balatro. Audience members get to vote for the winner. Hilarity is sure to ensue.

Wake Up & Boogie Down Family Festival
9 a.m.-noon Saturday at LaSalle Power Co., $10-$20
Neighborhood Parents Network of Chicago hosts this inaugural fundraiser that's fun for the whole family. See a performance by Little Miss Ann's Band and participate in arts and crafts by Easel Art Studio, maraca making with Musical Magic, magic and balloon fun, kid-friendly food and drinks, and a raffle. All proceeds go to
NPN, a neighborhood organization for parents.

Bloodshot Records 15th Anniversary Beer-B-Q
noon Saturday at Hideout; $10
Ok, so there's no Hideout Block Party this year. Done crying yet? Good. Because the popular fest's replacement ain't so shabby: local (and nationally acclaimed) alt-country label Bloodshot Records will celebrate its 15th anniversary with an all-day "Beer-B-Q". The lineup is predictably strong and diverse; along with the more high-profile appearances from Alejandro Escovedo and The Waco Brothers, we're excited for the reunion of The Blacks, whose two albums rank, for us, among Bloodshot's finest releases to date. There will also be food from Honky Tonk Barbecue, an art show, kids' area and more. Sounds like a fest to us...

Just missed the cut: U2, Celtic Fest Chicago, Windy City Wine Festival, 18th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade, Renegade Craft Fair

Weekend Warrior 9/3/09

Rod Blagojevich Superstar ends its eight-month run at Navy Pier this weekend.

Rod Blagojevich Superstar!
Through Sunday at Navy Pier, $25
After eight bleeping golden months at Navy Pier, Second City's schmaltzy musical send-up of our felonious guv finally closes the curtain on Sunday. The show exploits a lucky confluence between the bombast of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Jesus Christ Superstar" and the Blag's self-dramatizing messiah complex, with enough Chicago references to keep locals rolling in the aisles along with out-of-towners.

Chicago Luxury Ice Cream Festival
7-10 p.m. Friday at The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, $25
Only in Chicago could we have an entire festival centered around ice cream. But this is no ordinary two-scoops-and-a-cone deal. "Culinary artisans" like Dimitri & Keli Fayard (Vanille Patisserie), Ina Pinkney (Ina's), Michael Lachowicz (Michael) and Geno Bahena (Los Moles) will offer some seriously decadent treats. The evening includes the Great Chicago Brain Freeze - a chef competition where everyone gets the chance to vote for the winners and taste the results.

African Festival of the Arts
All day Friday-Monday, Washington Park (51st and Cottage Grove), $5-10 or $30 for a weekend pass
The 20th installment of this immensely popular South Side festival finishes with a bang as the "Godfather of Funk" himself, George Clinton, headlines on Monday. Leading up to that, check out acts like The Pharcyde and Booker T. Jones (Saturday), Ahmad Jamaal and the Soukous Stars (Sunday). There's also a kids tent and a food court with traditional African fare.

Chicago Jazz Festival
11 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Friday-Sunday at Grant Park, free
One of the most popular events fests of the season returns as Grant Park's free music festival schedule winds down for the year. This year's lineup runs the gamut of entertainment, from local high school and college jazz bands to Chicago legends such as Jeff Parker (with the Jeff Parker Quartet, 5 p.m. Friday) and national stars like Dave Holland Big Band (8 p.m. Saturday). Check out our top picks for this year's Jazz Fest.

Lingerie Football League: Chicago Bliss vs. Miami Caliente
9 p.m. Friday at the Sears Centre, $20
You're either incredibly intrigued or incredibly offended by the newest pro football league, this one a full-contact game played by chicks in skimpy outfits. Whether you're going to protest or to whistle in approval, you better get your tickets fast: The game (one of only two in Chicago this season) is expected to sell out. Tailgating starts at 3 p.m. in the Sears Centre parking lot.

Just missed the cut: Bash on Wabash, Irish Days, Taste of Polonia, Tanya Morgan

Michael Jackson Birthday Tribute
Friday at Kit Kat Lounge and Supper Club
Kit Kat's "Black & White" martinis are $5, and the first 50 guests will receive a limited edition Kit Kat/MJ sparkled glove.

The Sexiest Legs of the Summer Contest
midnight Friday at Leg Room
We're in the heart of summer, so those legs ain't getting any sexier. Show everyone the best you got from ankle to thigh and you could walk home $300 richer. Guest judges include Derrick Tribbet (Sinister) and Brenden (Chi Chi), cast members from VH1 reality show "Daisy of Love" and Chicago native Tiffany Carmona from "Rock of Love with Bret Michaels." Drink specials for the night: $5 Absolut Martinis, $4 Absolut drinks and $4 Bacardi Dragonberry bombs starting at 10 p.m.

Bucktown Arts Fest
11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Senior Citizens Memorial Park, free
Fight the (gentrification) powers that be with a hearty roster of local bands, art, performances and local food. The event has drawn upwards of 30,000 people in recent years and is truly a grassroots event: It is put on completely by volunteers.

Viva! Chicago Latin Music Festival and Art Fair
Saturday and Sunday in Grant Park, free
Get your salsa (and merengue) on at this huge Latin music festival and dance party. Headlining acts include Colombian rockers Aterciopelados (Saturday) and Mexican crooner Lila Downs (Sunday).

Buckwheat Zydeco
8 p.m. Saturday at SPACE, $25-$30
You may not know the name Stanley Dural, but the man better known as Buckwheat Zydeco has almost singlehandedly brought the zydeco genre mainstream. His merging of rock and R&B to create a party-jam hybrid will get a perfect venue at Evanston's intimate SPACE stage. R&B pianist/vocalist Josh Charles opens.

Just missed the cut: Taste of Greece, Taste of Armenia Festival, G Love & Special Sauce, Black Sheep, Randolph Street Market Festival, Chicago Triathlon, Port Clinton Art Festival

Weekend Warrior 8/20/09

Glamorama 2009
Friday at 8 p.m. at Chicago Theater, tickets start at $50
Fashion and music come together in a star-studded evening at an iconic theater. Grammy winner Ne-Yo headlines the music performers (joined by Kristinia DeBarge and The New Standards). Designers such as Marc Jacobs, Max Mara and Jean Paul Gaultier will showcase their goods for the fashion portion of the show, which raises funds for Ronald McDonald House and Children's Cancer Research Fund (and reportedly will include a special appearance by Miss Piggy).

Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal
Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Ravinia, $27-$80
If you haven't been to Ravinia yet this year, time is running out. And there's no better show to see than these two blues icons, who will come together for a collaborative set at the end of the show.

Get some culture at Ukrainian Days.

Ukrainian Days Festival
Saturday and Sunday at Smith Park, noon-10 p.m., $5 donation
If your only knowledge of Ukrainian culture come from hailing a cab outside of the Empty Bottle (in Ukie Village) and eating chicken Kiev, it's time to expand your horizons. This fest offers authentic Eastern European food, dancing and a new musical act literally every 15 minutes. Opera soloist Roman Sydoruk headlines and is preceded by more than a dozen different performers each day.

2nd Annual HRC Pub Crawl
Saturday, 1-7 p.m. at various Boystown bars, $10
If there's one thing they know how to do well in Boystown, it's party. And this time it's for a good cause, namely the Human Rights Campaign - the nation's largest civil rights organization promoting the rights of the GLBT community. Registration begins at noon at Halsted's and there are specials at every bar on the crawl. The rundown: Halsted's Bar & Grill (1-2 p.m.), Roscoe's Tavern (2:15-3:15), Cocktail (3:30-4:30), Minibar (4:45-5:45) and Spin (6-7).

John Oliver
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., at the Lakeshore Theater, $20
Comedy Central fans will know Oliver as "the British guy from The Daily Show." There's probably much worse ways to be known, and Oliver promises to put on a hilarious, politically-tinged stand-up show. He's joined by local comedian Hannibal Buress, who spent the summer on the nationwide F You Tour.

Bicycle Film Festival
Through Sunday in various venues, $10 per screening, $25 for a festival pass
Bike, movie and art enthusiasts come together for this five-day show throughout the city. Some of the highlights (full schedule here) include Thursday's Joyride Art Show (6 p.m. at the MCA Warehouse), Friday's Fun Bike Shorts (9 p.m. at Columbia College) and Saturday's afterparty at The Empty Bottle with DJs Matt ROAN and E-Six (9 p.m., free with movie admission).

Chicago Air & Water Show
10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at North Avenue Beach, free
Yeah, it's gonna be crowded. And it'll probably be hot and humid. But how could you miss the awe-inspiring maneuvers from these amazing pilots (and their eerily futuristic aircrafts)? The best views are at North Avenue (including a play-by-play) but you can get a good view from anywhere along the lakefront. For a guaranteed great seat, check out the deals at Oak Street Beachstro.

Chicago Turkish World Festival
10 a.m.-10 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at Navy Pier
Might want to leave the Borat costume at home for this one. The weekend-long festival celebrates the cultures of Central Asia (yes, including Kazakhstan) through food, dance and art. Check out authentic Turkish artwork and souvenirs while sipping Turkish coffee and sampling other delicacies. And demonstrations by the Turkish traveling troupe "The Whirling Dervishes of Rumi" can't be missed.

Green Music Fest
Saturday and Sunday at Eckhart Park (1330 W. Chicago Ave.), noon-11 p.m., $11.50-$25
Just think, an entire weekend festival with zero carbon footprint. At least, that's the goal at this event, where all the vendors are earth-friendly (recylced crafts and solar-powered devices will be on offer) and the music is earth-shaking. If you do nothing else, check out Saturday headliner Art Brut, who are known for a great live show. Lucero headlines on Sunday.

Power Wheels Racing Series
noon-7 p.m. Saturday at the Pumping Station (3506 N. Sacramento Ave.)
It's like NASCAR, only with less noise and really, really small cars. Teams modify and soup up their Power Wheels and put them through a series of tests that range from the grueling Grand Prix of Logan to a polo match, all hoping to be crowned king of the little wheels. Add in DJs, food and drinks and you got yourself a day at the track.

Lollapalooza parties
Through Sunday, all around town
Hey, have you heard about that big festival in Grant Park? Lollapa-somethingorother? ... OK, we assume you know Lollapalooza is taking over the city this weekend, and if you don't have tickets, you better hurry. But there's also all sorts of pre- and post-parties, related shows and DJ sets all over the city. Some of our faves: Peter Bjorn & John at the Cubby Bear, (Friday at 10 p.m., free), MSTRKRFT, L.A. Riots, Dark Wave Disco DJs at Bottom Lounge (Saturday at 9 p.m., $18) and of course, the in-demand Dave Grohl/John Paul Jones/Josh Homme super-show at Metro on Sunday night (midnight, sold out).
Taylor Street Festa Italiana
Friday-Sunday until 11 p.m. on Taylor Street between Ashland and Loomis, $7
It's cover band mania on Taylor Street, as Crash Trio (Dave Matthews Band) headlines on Friday and Bad Medicine (Bon Jovi) plays Saturday night. You can also catch tributes to Frank Sinatra (Friday), Dean Martin (Saturday) and the 3 Tenors (Sunday). Oh, and plenty of the best Italian food this side of Tuscany.

Saturday starting at 10 a.m. at Martin Luther King Drive and 39th Street, free
High school drill teams, floats, marching bands and more march down MLK Drive in the country's largest African-American parade, which celebrates its 80th year. Be sure to check out the after-parade picnic, which boasts more than 80 local businesses.

Iowa Cubs vs. Las Vegas 51s
Sunday at 1:20 p.m. at Wrigley Field
Want to sit in the bleachers at Wrigley for 10 bucks and drink a $3 beer? Well, this is probably your only chance. The Cubs' minor league team plays a game every year at the Friendly Confines, giving fans a chance to see an affordable ball game in the historic park. And really, up until a few weeks ago, you couldn't even tell the difference between the minor leaguers and the real Cubbies. Plaza Suite
Through Sunday at 7:30 p.m. (6:30 on Sunday) at Theater on the Lake
The first sign that summer is winding down is the last show of the season at Theater on the Lake. Might as well make the most of it with this Neil Simon classic from the Eclipse Theatre Company, featuring three couples and three stories in one fancy hotel room.

Ask Centerstage: Blues Hotels

photo: Courtesy of Nick Flandro

My brother and I are celebrating our 50th & 55th birthdays by going to Chicago (first-timers) to listen to the blues. What area of Chicago should we stay if we want to be close to most of the best blues clubs?

Thanks,
Scott

Happy Birthday, Scott (and Scott's brother)! We have to commend you on your choice of celebrations - a trip to Chicago will be far more rewarding (and cheaper) than that sports car your inner child has been eying. So, down to business.

If you stay somewhere in the South Loop area (the Hilton on S. Michigan, perhaps, or the Blackstone Hotel), you'll have nearby access to some good clubs - Buddy Guy's Legends, Jazz Showcase (mostly jazz, but occasional blues) and Blue Chicago (a bit further north), for example. Plus, you won't have too long of a drive down to
South Side clubs like Artis's Lounge and Lee's Unleaded Blues, both of which are recommended for authentic blues.

Another option would be to stay somewhere in Lincoln Park (the Inn at Lincoln Park, the Days Inn, or smaller, bungalow-style residences like the China Doll Guest House) so you'd be near
Kingston Mines and B.L.U.E.S., though these are fairly easily accessible via public transportation from downtown. You'd get there even quicker in a flashy new sports car.

Gold Coast Art Fair
10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Sunday; free
It's art as far as the eye can see at this nine-block festival celebrating its 52nd year. More than 350,000 people are expected to walk the streets of the swanky Gold Coast neighborhood while perusing work from 400 artists.

Northalsted Market Days
11 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday-Sunday on Halsted from Belmont to Addison; $5
Where can you find En Vogue, The Village People, Jody Watley and Kathy Sledge (yes, one of the sisters) all in one street festival? Boystown, of course! The people watching alone is worth the price of admission, but the 400 food and artist booths are even better. And if you think the party stops when the fest closes at 10, you obviously haven't been to Boystown before.

The Great Urban Race
Starts noon Saturday at Cubby Bear; $60-$70
Test your knowledge of the city while solving a dozen challenges at this city-wide scavenger hunt. Up to 500 teams of two search for random items, decipher puzzles and complete physical challenges. The first 25 teams to finish will compete in the national championship race for a chance at $10,000.

Uncle Fatty's

The World's Largest Indoor Bar Crawl
6-9 p.m. Saturday at Uncle Fatty's Rum Resort and The Coach House; $30
Looking for the drunken enjoyment of a bar crawl without all the walking and fresh air? Head to Uncle Fatty's (and the adjacent Coach House) where they're turning the place into five separate bars, serving their signature cocktails and "fish bowls" all night. Special bonus to the aspiring drunks: Get a drink from all five bars, and you can cash it in for Uncle Fatty's cooler service (12 beers served in a personal cooler), presumably at a later date.

Mos Def & Jay Electronica
7:30 p.m. Sunday at House of Blues; $35-$37
Hey Mos, here's a little free career advice: Give up the acting. You're such a better musician when you set your mind to it. While his stints in "Monster's Ball" and "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" were fine and dandy, Mos Def's latest album, The Ecstatic, is the best he has sounded since his Blackstar days with Talib Kweli.

The show will also run Saturday and Sunday from noon-7 p.m. Ten percent of all sales will be donated to Street Level Youth Media.

Wicker Park Fest
Saturday-Sunday on Milwaukee Avenue between Damen and Wood; $5
When it comes to neighborhood music fests, this is about as good as it gets?and the residents of this eclectic area wouldn't have it any other way. This year's lineup includes Junior Boys, Grand Duchy (featuring Frank Black of the Pixies), Mickey Factz, Van Ghost and more (and the after-party at the Congress Theater features Jamie Lidell). Barrel of Monkeys, one of our favorite non-profits, touches down for a week in one of our favorite city-sponsored venues. The Monkeys, adults who stage stories written by Chicago school-children, are on a noble quest to encourage literacy among the youth. As a pleasant side benefit, they produce the most insanely entertaining cheap show in the city. Do good, laugh hard.

Throwback Theaters

Has the Chicago Outdoor Film Festival gotten you inspired for more alfresco movie-watching (that doesn't involve sitting on the grass)? Though Chicago-area drive-in theaters are a rare breed, you can still find a few spots standing strong in the shadows of today's infamous IMAX. We love these historic cinemas for their retro kitsch, cheap tickets and added privacy. Hey, where else can you catch a brand-new blockbuster in your pajamas?

You know Midway Drive-In is special from the moment you arrive.

Midway Drive-In
As Illinois's oldest operating drive-in theater, Midway remains one of the few that has operated continuously since its inception in 1950. The Sterling landmark is about a two-hour drive from the city and offers a classic "spaceship" ticket booth, a playground for the tots (located right in front of the screen) and a full-service concession stand (smuggling in your own snacks is prohibited). The only modern amenity you'll notice at this single-screen theater is its updated FM radio audio system (rather than the old pole speakers). Admission is six bucks for adults and free for kids ages 11 and under.

Cascade Drive-In
Located in DuPage County, this vintage venue trumps its competitors in both size and popularity. As the largest outdoor cinema in Illinois, with capacity for 1200 cars, Cascade Drive-In generates more rave reviews than any other drive-in in the state. And it's been doing so since its heyday in the 1950s. Since then, the theater has continued to run on the standard seasonal basis from April-October, screening double features (that breaks down to just $4.25 per flick) seven nights per week with a choice of traditional drive-in speakers or FM radio. You'll also find a full-service concession stand and a picnic area, where you can barbecue your own grub on one of Cascade's grills (just remember to bring your own charcoal). Admission is $8.50 for adults and $4.50 for children ages 5-11, cash only.

Just say no to gravel parking lots.

Route 34 Drive-In
This single screen theater, located in Earlville on Old Route 34, has been standing strong under the same family since 1954. And while the generations have certainly undergone some extreme changes, the 34 has stayed true to its roots with outside speakers and an old-fashioned concession stand (where everything is still made-to-order), featuring movie must-haves like nachos, corndogs and cheeseburgers. Another notable feature here is the venue's lot; while most outdoor theater grounds are covered in gravel or smoothed over with concrete, the 34 is lush with plenty of green grass. Additionally, the drive-in operates on a seasonal basis from April-October and screens double features on weekends. Admission is six bucks for adults and $3 for kids ages 6-12, cash only.

McHenry Outdoor Theater
Making the hour-long trek out to McHenry may sound like a drag, but once you locate the standout screen on Chapel Road, we promise you'll find instant relief from road rage. It's just one of those places that has the immediate ability to make you feel like a kid again. Perhaps it's McHenry's wholesome all-American atmosphere, or maybe it's the carefree vibe that the other patrons tend to emit. It could even be the venue's cafeteria-style concession stand. Whatever it is, we're sold. And we think you'll agree after dishing out a mere $7 for one of the theater's double features, which are often suitable for the whole family (last month the theater featured a Walt Disney double-bill of "Up" and "Earth"). In addition to offering cheap tickets, the theater provides room for up to 800 cars and has recently begun offering group packages for special events like birthdays, which include a roped-off VIP area for the partygoers.

Pitchfork Music Festival
Friday-Sunday at Union Park; $35/day
If you don't know about the country's most consistently interesting fest (yeah, we said it), get learnin'. This year's lineup features a who's who of indie music, from Built to Spill and Yo La Tengo on Friday (doing request-driven sets, no less) to The National, The Black Lips and Lindstrom on Saturday, to Grizzly Bear and The Flaming Lips on Sunday. Add to that a ton of cool vendors and, for once, mild weather, and you've got a recipe for an amazing musical weekend. Check out our schedule picks and plan where to eat around the park.

noon-10 p.m. Saturday at Evergreen and Milwaukee; free
Live music, DJs, food and art highlight this indoor/outdoor fest presented by The Silver Room in Wicker Park. The party (this year's theme: "Take A Stand") features performances from some of Chicago's most diverse creatives, including BBU, The Gents, Lono Brazil and more.

Begins 10 a.m. Saturday at Soldier Field's South Courtyard (inside Gate O); free admission, $25-$90 to compete
Are you the cornhole king of your block? It's one thing to embarrass your drunk friends at a barbecue, but quite another to test your bag-throwing skills against the kind of competition that'll be present at this annual event. This thing is so big, the American Cornhole Organization (yup, it's real) has come to oversee the Competitive Singles Division, which features some of the best pro players in the world. Competitors in this division and the other three (competitive doubles and social singles and doubles) will vie for $4,000 in cash and prizes. Even if you choose not to enter, you'll enjoy live music, food and more. To register or for more information, call (312) 235-7000 or hit the website.

Sheffield Garden Walk
noon-10:15 p.m. Saturday-Sunday
Don't be fooled by the name of this one - sure, there are plenty of self-guided garden and architectural tours to be found, but the real action happens at the house parties going down all day. We're not saying you can just waltz into any building with a case of beer, but it'll feel like it. It all leads up to the throwback concerts at night, featuring Rusted Root (Saturday) and Poi Dog Pondering (Sunday).

Weekend Warrior 7/9/09

Chicago Folk & Roots Festival
Saturday-Sunday at Welles Park; $8
The Old Town School of Folk Music's eclectic annual fest may fly a bit under the radar of many Chicagoans, but to know it is to love it (especially if you've got kids in tow). Don't be fooled by the name, as you'll find a whole lot more than just folk music here; this year's eclectic lineup includes throwback soul (Austin's Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears), Mediterranean electro (France's Watcha Clan) and what we'll describe as Indian-inspired club sounds (Karsh Kale, from New York).

Arj Barker
Friday-Saturday at Lakeshore Theater; $20
Fans of Mitch Hedberg, Steven Wright and even Jerry Seinfeld will find something to love in the humor of this offbeat comedian, perhaps best known for his role as Dave, the pawn-shop owner in HBO's "Flight of the Conchords." Barker's sense of humor is both straightforward and absurd - for evidence, watch a few episodes of his online animated series, "Arj and Poopy," which features a cat who communicates via flatulence.

Tour de Fat
9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday; free
Lovers of beer and biking should head to Palmer Square Park (Palmer and Kedzie) on Saturday for a taste of both, as New Belgium Brewing Company's annual Tour de Fat kicks off with a stop in Chicago. There'll be a bike parade, lots of music (from Mucca Pazza and Sean Hayes) special performances (from the Squirm Bumpee Circus, The Daredevil Chicken Club and The Sprockettes, Portland's original mini-bike dance troupe) and a whole lotta brews including the flagship Fat Tire Amber Ale. You'll also get to watch one lucky person (the winner of an online contest) give away his or her car to charity in exchange for a brand-new commuter bike.

L.A.T.E. Ride
Saturday-Sunday; $35-$40
There's still time to register for this festive, late-night loop through the city (the first group pushes off at 1:10 a.m.) - "like Woodstock on wheels," says one former rider. Crowds will cheer you on from Buckingham Fountain through Greektown, the West Loop and the North and Northwest Sides. Coffee and breakfast will be served at the fountain from 3:30-6 a.m.

West Fest
Saturday-Sunday; $5
Local bands, local food and a hip, artsy vibe dominate this fest that's also known for its pet-friendliness. Check out the groming stations and dog games in the Pet Fest area, or just head over to one of the music stages; this year's lineup includes Local H, Red Red Meat, The 1900s, Aluminum Group, Mucca Pazza and others.

On the Waterfront

Bring your dog to Montrose Beach.

Chicago's beaches have come a long way since first opening for public bathing purposes in the late 1800s. The water, despite popular belief, is as clean as can be (Chicago actually boasts the cleanest urban waterfront in the entire country, even with the occasional e.coli outbreak), access is totally free and the crowds are more diverse than ever. Though we do think that most of the restrooms could stand some serious tending to. In the spirit of sun-worshipping and heated volleyball tournaments, we've rounded up a few of our favorite Chicago beaches, from north to south.

Bring on the barbecue at Foster Avenue Beach
You know the day is in your favor when you nab a free parking spot at this lush North Side beach. Arrive early enough and you'll have a good chance of sparking that lucky streak. From there, you can hike it over to the spacious shoreline?where posing and parading are a refreshing rarity?and scoop up the perfect sunbathing spot. Show up on a weekday and revel in the peace and quiet with a good book or cool off in the lake. Just try not to work up too much of an appetite while you're here, as the concession stand is outrageously overpriced. Of course, you could always saunter a few blocks west to Dominick's (on the corner of Foster & Sheridan) and host a barbecue on one of the beach's public grills.

Play with your pooch at Montrose Beach
Montrose Beach is a favorite of ours for several reasons, including its easy access from the Montrose bus, beach volleyball and the allowance of non-motorized watercraft (read: kayaks and catamarans). But what really makes this a standout is the fenced-off area for Fido. In fact, out of the Chicago Park District's 29 beaches, Montrose is one of just two to boast a dog-friendly area, where our furry pals can romp around without the regular restraint of their leashes.

Take the tykes to Kathy Osterman Beach
More commonly referred to as Hollywood Beach by locals, this crescent-shaped spot, located at the 5800 North block where Lakeshore Drive ends, is divided into two sandy sections. On the northernmost end of the beach, where the waters skirt the shallow side, you'll find plenty of frolicking families. Head over to the southern side and you'll be greeted by cliques of gorgeous gays, as this is where most of the Boystown crowd comes to grab some rays and, hopefully, a few numbers. Not only do we love the diversity of this North Side staple, but its nearby access to the Bryn Mawr and Thorndale Red Line stations are a major plus. You'll also find a number of volleyball courts, which are often in full swing with organized matches.

Swim in style at North Avenue Beach
Head a bit further south to the popular North Avenue Beach and the first things you'll notice are herds of hard bodies and stiletto-clad style fiends. This is one of the best beaches for people-watching, and the people here definitely don't mind being watched. But it isn't all about seeing and being seen on this scalloped shoreline; plenty of families also come here to relax and soak up North Avenue's spectacular skyline views. Whether it's a workday or a weekend, you can bet this beach will be busy, but that also makes it one of the safer spots for swimming thanks to the city's largest lifeguard staff on duty. Additionally, you'll find Chicago's most developed beach house, along with plenty of summer-inspired bites and beverages.

The view from the patio at Oak Street Beachstro.

Get your game on at Oak Street Beach
Thanks to its close proximity to the loop, Oak Street Beach draws in plenty of posh patrons, making it the one beach in Chicago where you can park it under an imported palm tree. The haute vibe here may not be ideal for relaxation, but it does make the beach a perfect place to let loose with a beverage, or five. Competition on this turf runs thick, from fierce volleyball matches to perfectly toned and tanned bodies scattered along the 1.5-mile shoreline, so be sure to sport your game face along with your sauciest swimwear. And hey, if chiseled abs and perfect pecs aren't your strong suit, you can always hike it over to the beach's chess pavilion, grab a fine meal at the Oak Street Beachstro, or get lost in Chicago's largest area of deep-water swimming.

Dive deep at 12th Street Beach
Wedged between the Adler Planetarium and Northerly Island (formerly Meigs Field), this South Side beach draws in patrons from all over the city. It's a favorite with serious swimmers, who can safely dive into deeper waters, located just east of the beach. And thanks to its distance from the downtown area, 12th Street Beach is more focused on family-friendly activities and laid-back crowds than it is pretentious partygoers and scantily clad cliques.

Max and relax at 57th Street Beach
Sitting in the Hyde Park neighborhood, this spot remains one of the calmer, quieter places to soak up some rays. You'll also notice that it's home to one of Chicago's cleaner shorelines and an attentive crew of lifeguards. 57th Street Beach is an ideal getaway for families and couples seeking an escape, as well as a great place to unwind with a picnic after spending a day at the nearby Museum of Science and Industry.

Weekend Warrior 6/25/09

Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade
noon Sunday at Halsted and Belmont; free
Floats, bands, politicians and hundreds of thousands of people invade Boystown for a summer event unlike any other. Midwestern friendliness ? not to mention colorful costumes, dancing and drunkenness ? will be on full display at this rowdy event, the highlight of a weekend of Pride parties (including Pride Fest).

SKALD Storytelling Festival
Friday-Saturday at Studio Theater (Chicago Cultural Center)
The 10th annual yarn-spinning competition comes to a close this weekend with two fun events. On Friday (7:30 p.m., $15), Maelstrom pits six storytellers against one another as they improvise tales based on audience suggestions. The audience votes for the winner. On Saturday (7:30 p.m., $20), Steve Edwards of WBEZ Chicago hosts a panel of expert judges at the main competition, which features professional storytellers.

Taste of Chicago
Friday through July 5 at Grant Park; free
The city's annual ode to gluttony gets even bigger this year, with celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse and a whole new music stage full of independent and local acts (bigger names like Buddy Guy, Ne-Yo and Counting Crows headline the main stage). Take a look at the vendor list, plan your concert schedule and prepare for total grill domination. It's Taste time, baby!

Dew Tour's Nike 6.0 BMX Open
Friday-Saturday at Grant Park; $15-$50
2008 Dew Cup champs Cameron White (Dirt) and Jamie Bestwick (Vert) come to Chicago along with other top riders for the first stop on this year's bike-tricks tour. Whether you've got a reserved seat or shell out the big bucks for a spot in the Action Zone, you're bound to have lots of eye-popping memories. And don't forget about the Lupe Fiasco concert on Friday night at Chicago Theatre.

Rock the Bells
Saturday at First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre; $38-$176
For the past five years, Rock The Bells has been the celebratory convergence point for hip-hop's past, present and possible future. For one day a year, legends of the golden era (this year's representatives include Nas, Busta Rhymes, GZA and Common) share fertile ground with the future sounds of hip-hop (including K'Naan and The Knux). The Chicago stop on the tour won't necessarily have a show-stealing headliner like in years past, but the overall balance of stellar acts should more than make up the difference. Some of the more notable performances will come via The Roots, Slum Village, Sage Francis, Raekwon, Big Boi, Reflection Eternal and the Blastmaster himself, KRS-One.

Just missed the cut: Chicago Soul Music Festival, Naughty By Nature at Cans, Chicago Salsa Festival
