Business in Nicaragua is trickling in. Kaye says he gets three or four bookings a month, whereas he can get as many as 800 in Costa Rica. MacKenzie was able to visit villages tourism hadn’t reached, unmarred trails, and islands where he was the sole American visitor. “It was like stepping back in time,” he says.  This sense of virgin territory will, of course, be radically altered if and when the country becomes a favored destination. Kaye himself never intended to exploit the Costa Rican–ecotourism economy, and he’s ambivalent about Nicaragua using it as a model. He’s happy to be starting slowly with his efforts.

But just as entrepreneurs followed his lead in Costa Rica, many companies are now expanding their ecotourism empires to Nicaragua, too. Lindblad Expeditions will guide you through hikes, kayak trips, and snorkeling expeditions. Then there’s Gray Line’s “Granada Natural” expedition, which takes you to Apoyo Lagoon, just outside Granada. Dozens of outfitters offer scuba and snorkeling, surfing, canopy tours, and hiking, and there is a wealth of eco-resorts in which to stay.  

Perhaps the best known—and a prime example of how the future of Nicaraguan eco-tourism could potentially shape up—is Morgan’s Rock, a hacienda and eco-lodge in Playa Ocotal, the southern section of Nicaragua, 45 minutes from the Costa Rican border. On 4,400 acres, a French family by the name of Ponçon and a British architect named Matthew Falkiner have launched a concerted conservation effort while still promoting the local economy, setting aside 800 acres of primary growth forest and planting 800,000 native hardwood and fruit trees for farming and use in local crafts.  

“We wanted to promote nature as it is,” says Falkiner. “We don’t have to pretty it all up. We didn’t want to do anything that imposed very heavily on the area.” And, of course, they don’t have to pretty it up; the place is majestically beautiful, with tree-house–like cabins perched on a cliff, peering out over the water.

In some respects, Nicaragua is quite lucky to have only recently discovered its environmental attributes, in the middle of an eco-marketing craze when people are eager to find the next big green thing. But those who wish to take in its offerings might have to jump on the bandwagon before there is one. “Now’s the time to go, while it still hasn’t been overdeveloped,” says Kaye. “[Nicaragua will] never be the next Costa Rica—it’ll be its own thing.”

In spite of the hundreds of kilometers of coastline on both the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, Panama's beaches are less than noteworthy. The coastal area surrounding Panama City is mud flats; farther west the sand is dark and the water dirty-green until you reach the pretty beaches at Santa Clara and Farallón. The Azuero Peninsula and parts of the Caribbean coast are, sadly, receptacles for trash carried by currents from South America and beyond.

There are a few exceptions, but to find glorious tropical beaches, you'll need to visit Panama's islands. There are more than 1,000 on the Pacific Side and a little more than half that number on the Caribbean, so you have a lot to choose from. A word of caution: Panama is renowned for its riptides. No matter how refreshing the water looks, analyze conditions, stay out of choppy water, or head to a beach known for calm water.

Isla Bastimentos National Park, Bocas del Toro

Cayos Zapatillas, or the "Slippers Islands" (so-called because they resemble footprints), not only fulfill the beach lover's fantasy with their soft sand backed by a tangle of jungle; they are also surrounded by a rich display of coral that attracts hordes of fish, providing good snorkeling. The park's main island, Isla Bastimentos, offers terrific beaches with clean sand and blue water, such as Red Frog Beach, Wizard Beach, and Playa Larga, which can be reached by a short walk or hike, or by boat during the calm-water season from August through October.

Isla Coiba National Park

Beyond ranking as Panama's number-one diving site, Isla Coiba National Park boasts fine beaches backed by dense jungle. Tiny islands such as Granito de Oro are so idyllic that midsize cruise ships make a stop here (which could spoil your day if you're here independently). Even the beach fronting the park station seems too perfect to be true.

Las Perlas Archipelago

Despite this Pacific archipelago's proximity to Panama City, its top-notch snorkeling, white-sand beaches, and calm-water swimming conditions, the Pearl Islands are a relatively unsung beach destination. Outside of holidays and the hard-core summer, you won't find crowds here, even during weekends. It's also drier here during the rainy season. Isla Contadora offers lodging and day trips for fabulous snorkeling and visits to uninhabited beaches, and there is a luxury lodge, Hacienda San José, on Isla San José.

Comarca Kuna Yala

This is the premier beach destination in Panama, with over 350 islands scattered off the Caribbean coast that offer picture-postcard beaches with powdery white sand, coral reef, piercing turquoise water, and clusters of swaying palm trees. The colorful Kuna indigenous population administers this province, and their fascinating culture is part of the reason to visit the region, too. The glitch is that scuba diving is prohibited, and lodging is mostly Robinson Crusoe rustic, but all you'll want to do here anyway is swim, sun, and swing in a hammock.

Las Lajas, Chiriquí Province

It's not the most beautiful beach in Panama, but the water is the perfect temperature and produces just the right amount of waves for bodysurfing -- though there's little current. All of which means that Las Lajas is ideal for swimming, and since the beach measures more than 13km (8 miles) in length, you can walk forever. Rustic shacks and cheap restaurants are clustered on the beach at the end of the road, but it's best to bring your own snacks. If you're looking for a beach closer to David (and Boquete), try La Barqueta. Strong currents at this black-sand beach mean the water is not ideal for swimming, but it is lengthy like Las Lajas and good for walking, and there is a nature reserve here, too.

Santa Clara & Farallón, Pacific Coast
These two are the most appealing beaches along the Pacific Coast, and the best for swimming. Best of all, they lie within a 2-hour drive of Panama City. The beaches' water is bluer and the sand cleaner and whiter than its neighbors closer to the city. The Decameron Resort produces throngs of beachgoers at Farallón, but for the most part this long stretch of sand sees few crowds outside of weekends. Be warned however, that swimming conditions can be treacherous due to large waves and strong riptides. Self-catering cabins, midrange bungalows, and seafood restaurants are abundant.

La caverna cuenta con 300 metros de vereda, donde el visitante puede admirar el moderno sistema de iluminación profesional, que da vida a cada estructura como las estalactitas y estalagmitas, que son depósitos de minerales que el agua subterránea disuelve y va formando cuando el agua gotea desde el techo de una cueva al suelo.

Esta caverna es de origen natural, los estudios científicos han revelado que se trataba de un río subterráneo que existió en la zona.

La bóveda más alta es de 20 metros, la que impresiona a cada turista que recorre el lugar y admira cada rincón de la cueva, donde se viven temperaturas que rondan de los 28 a 30 grados, y que está situada a unos 620 metros sobre el nivel del mar. De todas esas formaciones naturales de estalactitas y estalagmitas las más famosas son: La ala del ángel figura que pesa alrededor de cuatro toneladas y está colocada cerca del techo de la cueva, la Sotana del padre representada en piedra, El Buda, La Fuente, La Cascada, El Sombrero, El Sapo, el perfil de un indio, El Tiburón, la serpiente, las cuevas son un lugar donde puede dar rienda suelta a la imaginación.

Al caminar por la vereda se pueden observar los animales que habitan en la cueva: murciélagos, cucarachas, grillos, arañas, lombriz de tierra, son las especies que habitan el lugar ante la falta de suficiente oxígeno y vegetación, no hay otras especies que puedan sobrevivir en el interior de la caverna.

Nadie ha podido encontrar el final de la cueva, en 1979 la visitaron tres espeleólogos norteamericanos que entraron con el propósito de encontrarle un final, pero solo pudieron recorrer 921 metros de profundidad, su fin ha resultado un verdadero misterio.

Las cuevas de Taulabé son un atractivo para miles de personas que cada año la visitan.

Con el propósito de impulsar la economía y el turismo de la región, el gobierno hondureño lanzará al mundo "Las cinco maravillas naturales de Comayagua".

Las maravillas que forman parte de la campaña se encuentran dentro del corredor turístico de la zona que comprende los municipios de La Villa de San Antonio, Siguatepeque, Comayagua y Taulabé.

La elección de los lugares se realizó a través de un estudio sobre "Las cuatro maravillas del departamento de Comayagua" ejecutado en nuestro país en el año 2010 y promovido por el gobierno de aquel entonces, en esta ocasión se cuenta con la participación de ocho departamentos de Honduras.

Las maravillas naturales escogidas en la zona son:

Las Alfombras de Comayagua
El “Salto del Ángel” en la Villa de San Antonio
Las Cuevas de Taulabé” en el municipio de ese mismo nombre

El lanzamiento oficial de la campaña contará con la presencia del presidente Juan Orlando Hernández y se realizará en el municipio de Siguatepeque entre el 25 y 27 de marzo del presente año.

Ana Valenzuela, gobernadora del departamento de Comayagua, manifestó a LA PRENSA que se edificará en la zona un monumento que señalizará el kilómetro cero del departamento, donde los turistas nacionales y extranjeros podrán obtener información sobre las maravillas.

“Ya iniciamos con el proceso de señalización vial de las cinco maravillas del departamento de Comayagua, donde se colocarán a lo largo de la carretera CA-5 cerca de 70 rótulos de identificación desde el sector conocido como “La Pirámide” hasta las proximidades del Lago de Yojoa”, anunció la gobernadora.

La funcionaria expresó que las cinco maravillas generarán empleos en el departamento a través del turismo donde se promocionarán de igual forma otros lugares naturales similares y hermosos del sector.

Un recorrido único por el punto más alto del país, la iglesia más antigua de Latinoamérica o el canopy más extremo de Centroamérica ofrecerá el departamento de Lempira a los miles de turistas que lo visitarán durante Semana Santa.

El occidental departamento se prepara para ofrecer sus servicios a más de 15 mil turistas que tendrán la oportunidad de conocer las cinco maravillas departamentales de Lempira.

Hoteleros, dueños de restaurantes, alcaldes y la Gobernación de Lempira se han reunido para preparar actividades y dar servicios de calidad a los turistas que harán un recorrido por los puntos más atractivos del occidente del país.

Durante los últimos tres años, Gracias, Lempira, se ha convertido en uno de los puntos más atractivos del país y la construcción de la terminal aérea ha incrementado el número de extranjeros.

Ante la propuesta gubernamental de nombrar las cinco maravillas departamentales, autoridades de Lempira eligieron:

El parque nacional Montaña de Celaque
El canopy extremo de La Campa,
La iglesia La Inmaculada Concepción de San Manuel de Colohete,
El fuerte de San Cristóbal y las aguas termales.

Los atractivos lugares se eligieron por tener características únicas, como el Cerro Las Minas, en Celaque, el punto más alto de Honduras, con una altura aproximada de 2,870 metros sobre el nivel del mar, ideal para quienes aman la naturaleza.

Lempira cuenta con una enorme riqueza arquitectónica, pues en él se concentran iglesias con diversos estilos y se destaca la más antigua de Latinoamérica en San Manuel de Colohete.

El canopy extremo de La Campa es uno de los lugares más visitados en los últimos años, puesto que sobresale por altura y longitud en el ámbito centroamericano.

El gobernador de Lempira, Wilson Pineda, explicó que la llegada de turistas ha amentado en el departamento, por lo cual los dueños de hoteles y restaurantes amplían sus servicios y la capacidad para albergar más turistas, sobre todo en Semana Santa.

“La apertura del aeropuerto ha sido fundamental para el crecimiento del turismo”, explicó.

VISIT TORTUGUERO NATIONAL PARK

This is one of the few Costa Rican National Parks where walking quietly isn’t necessarily the best way to see things. The marked trail along the beach is used mostly for observing turtle nesting, but the best way to see most of the park is from a boat. That doesn’t mean you can’t get a workout while nature watching; there are plenty of places to rent canoes and kayaks (cayucas or botes).

The area protected by Tortuguero (turtle catcher) National Park was an archipelago of volcanic islands until alluvial sediments from the interior mountains filled in the spaces and formed a network of marshy islands.

Sand piled up where the river deposited land met the sea, and the turtle nesting beaches of Tortuguero formed.

The exceptionally high rainfall, and rich environment where the freshwater meets the sea makes the beaches, canals, lagoons and wetlands of Tortuguero areas of exceptional biodiversity and opportunity for nature lovers

The main attraction of Tortuguero National Park is the turtles. Green Sea Turtles (tortuga Verde, Chelonia mydas mydas ), leatherback (tortuga Baula, Dermochelys coriacea), and Hawksbill (tortuga Carey,Eretmochelys imbricata) turtles nest on the beaches here. Green Sea Turtles neared extinction due to hunting of the adults for meat (they are easy prey when they mass to nest) for turtle soup, and poaching of eggs for their supposed aphrodisiac qualities.

Dr. Archie Carr of the University of Florida formed the Caribbean Conservation Corporation in 1959 to study and protect sea turtles, and the turtle-tagging program he began at Tortuguero in 1955 continues today.

It’s possible to see stragglers laying eggs during the day, but the majority of the arrivals occur at night. You will need a guide to visit the beaches at night (no one is allowed on the beach unaccompanied after 6:00 pm). For independent travelers, this can be arranged through the kiosk in the middle of Tortuguero village or through your hotel.

When you and your guide walk out onto the beach under the starlight to watch the turtles struggle up the beach, dig their nests and lay their eggs, think about their future.

If you are exceptionally lucky, you might chance to see an even more spectacular event, the newly hatched turtles race to the sea. There is some overlap of the nesting and hatching seasons for the different varieties of turtles. The eggs incubate in the warm sand for 7 to 10 weeks before the babies hatch, dig their way to the surface and make the long dark scuttle from the nest well above the high tide mark, across the beach to the surf.

When to visit

The Green Sea and Hawksbill turtle’s nesting season runs from July to October with the peak in August, and the Leatherback turtles nest from February to April. It is possible to see individual turtles at any time of the year.

The weather in Tortuguero National Park should not be much of a consideration when deciding when to visit.

It rains here all the time, and the peak nesting season is in the rainy season when Caribbean rains can blow in on a north wind and stay for weeks. This is one of the rainiest areas of Costa Rica, and even in the dry season afternoon showers are common.

Set high above the enchanting national park, Manuel Antonio boasts world-class views and beaches. Between the main town and the national park, there are several world-class beaches in the area. Here, you can enjoy the wide variety of activities such as swimming, hiking the Manuel Antonio National Park, surfing, or simply relaxing while watching a vibrant sunset.

Manuel Antonio is one of only two locations in Costa Rica where you can see all four types of monkey; spider, howler, white faced and the endangered squirrel monkey, many of which can be visible from your hotel window. The area is also a prime destination for spotting sloths, both in and outside of the national park

This once tiny town has blossomed into the most popular Costa Rican beach destination. Available are all the amenities you would come to expect as well as a jumping nightlife.

Access to the area is possible along Coastal Highway 34 from either the north or south. The drive itself is popular among tourists as pronounced steep cliffs crash into the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. There is also a domestic airstrip in Quepos, just 7km away.

Be sure to keep an eye on your valuables at all times. Theft is a significant problem on the beaches, not just by humans but also by white faced monkeys looking to steal a quick snack.

The Emerald Coast is a pristine stretch of perfection running along the Pacific north of San Juan del Sur. This area is home to the best resorts in Nicaragua. The crown jewel of them all is Mukul Beach Golf & Spa resort in Guacalito de La Isla, roughly three hours by road from Managua airport. Not only is Mukul beautiful but their kids play area and programs make it the most family friendly resort in Central America.

11. No Time Change
Nicaragua is two hours behind US Eastern Standard Time and one hour ahead of Pacific Standard Time. No matter where in the US you’re coming from, the time change is manageable and won’t lead to sleepless nights and days of jet-lag for the kids.

10. Hiking the Mombacho Volcano
The Mombacho Volcano overlooks Granada and Lake Nicaragua and is accessible by just a short car ride to the top. Once at the summit, an easy two hour hike runs around the caldera of the volcano offering stunning views of the city and lake far below. The hike brings you through the Mombacho cloud forest and face to face with hundreds of endemic plant species including the stunning Mombacho orchid. Our three year old had no problem doing the walk entirely by herself and she loved the cool wet climate of the cloud forest.

9. Lake Nicaragua
Lake Nicaragua is home to 365 islets, most of which are incredibly accessible from Granada. Hop on a lake tour and you’ll get to cruise between the islets, see monkeys and weaver birds up close and spend a fun hour out on the water enjoying nature. If you have more time and your kids are a bit older, hop a ferry to Ometepe Island and experience Nicaragua’s volcanic island.

8. Sloths!
Even though sloths are slow, finding them in the wild can be a real challenge. On our hike on Mombacho volcano we searched and searched but they were nowhere to be seen. If you want to definitely see sloths, Berman Gomez is your man. Berman will pick you up in San Juan del Sur and take you to private land that wild sloths call home. Sloth sightings are nearly guaranteed. If you’re nice he may even take you to his mother’s house afterwards for freshly picked coconuts.

7. Exploring the Active Masaya Volcano
Masaya Volcano is located a half hour’s drive from Granada and unlike Mombacho, this volcano is very much active. It’s also unique in that it is the only volcano in the western hemisphere that allows you to drive right up to the rim of the caldera. This makes exploring the rim and the smoky caldera extremely accessible. There’s no need to hike for hours and if you come at night, you’ll see the red glow of liquid magma.

6. Getting Around by Horse & Carriage
Granada was founded in 1542 and is considered one of the first European cities in mainland America. Appropriately, the town maintains some of its colonial feel and maintains a fleet of horse and carriages that are constantly roaming the city. You can negotiate a private tour with any of the carriages in Parque Central and our daughter loved getting to ride in the carriage and watch the clip-clop of the horses. Be sure to negotiate! We let our daughter walk down the line and pick the horse and driver she liked.

5. Safety
I can’t speak for the safety of all of Nicaragua as we spent most of our time in Granada, but we felt nothing but safe everywhere we went. Many times we found ourselves walking back-streets after dark but never did the city seem anything but hospitable and friendly. Whenever we needed help or directions, people were happy to accommodate.

4. Casual Drinking
Like most of Latin America, alcohol is a part of life and in Nicaragua, that alcohol is Flor de Caña rum. This stuff flows like water in every restaurant, coffee shop and bar in town and even comes free in the rooms at Mukul. If you’re really into rum, you can tour the Flor de Caña distillery in Chichigalpa.

3. Food Everyone Likes
To go with all that rum, Nicaragua has some pretty great food. Nicaraguan food isn’t terribly complicated or unfamiliar but the ingredients are of high quality and the flavors delicious. No matter where we went, our daughter had no problem eating whatever we were eating. In Granada, we’d recommend Restaurante El Garaje, El Zaguan, Cafe de los Suenos, Nectar and Sr Tortuga’s Spanish Cafe. All these choices are extremely child friendly and absolutely delicious.

2. Visiting the Bat Cave
If you visit Masaya Volcano, you have to visit the nearby bat cave. We thought for sure this would terrify our daughter but she considers it one of the highlights of our trip. The bat cave is actually a lava tunnel leading away from the Masaya caldera. You enter the cave at night with a hard hat and flashlight and very soon bats are whizzing past your head on all sides. Don’t worry, they won’t hit you because they fly using sonar and not sight. While walking through the bat tunnel we encountered a giant tarantula on the wall. Our daughter promptly sang “Itsy Bitsy Spider” at the top of her lungs for all to enjoy. Talk about an ice-breaker.

1. Nicaragua (and Latin America in general) is Amazing for Kids
Living in New York City, we’re used to being inconvenienced because we have a child. At home, our additional needs are often seen as a nuisance and people are not so nice or accommodating. In Nicaragua (and in Latin America in general), the opposite is true. We have never traveled anywhere that is so overly accommodating to children. Restaurant bathrooms may not have changing tables, but people will go out of your way to help you into a taxi, let you cut the line or help you cross a street. The difference is remarkable!

THE MODERN CAPITAL OF GUATEMALA

The Republic of Guatemala, is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize to the northeast, the Caribbean to the east, Honduras to the east and El Salvador to the southeast. With an estimated population of around 15.8 million, it is the most populous state in Central America. A representative democracy, Guatemala's capital and largest city is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City.

Central America's largest metropolis has what you'd expect from an urban area of 2.5 million people—the best selection of hotels, restaurants, nightlife, and museums in the country. Yet most tourists come to Guatemala for ancient ruins, colonial towns, flamboyant markets, and spectacular volcanoes and lakes—not to explore a large, mostly modern city with a questionable reputation for security.

If time is tight, we certainly wouldn't recommend lingering in Guatemala City instead of, say, Lake Atitlán or Antigua. But if you have a couple of extra days, the capital, once known as "the Jewel of Latin America," does offer some unique attractions, all located within just a few of the city's 21 zones.

Whereas the narrow streets of the Old City can be chaotic, the quieter, more polished streets of the New City, with their fine restaurants and comfortable hotels, can be a much-needed dose of civilization after hitting the country's more remote sights. Toss in visits to a couple of impressive museums, and Guatemala City might surprise you. Who knows, if you stay in the capital long enough, you just might start using the same affectionate name residents give to their city: "Guate."

CULTURE Guatemala City boasts some impressive institutions, including the National Archaeology and Ethnology Museum, the Ixchel Museum of Indigenous Dress, and the Popol Vuh Museum.

FOOD AND DRINK
The capital has the country's highest concentration of fine restaurants, with an emphasis on international and fusion cuisine. There are also enough bars and clubs to keep the most ardent night owl busy for weeks.
R&R After a week or two traveling in the provinces, there's no better place to check into a luxury hotel, kick back, and loll by the pool for a couple of days.
SHOPPING If you're interested only in handicrafts, by all means head to Chichi; but if your tastes run toward fine art, antiques, and designer shops, Guate is the place to be.

When to Go

The capital has distinct rainy (May to October) and dry seasons (November to April). Being the center of business and politics, Guatemala City hosts more visitors during the week than on weekends. It's the obvious choice for the beginning or end of your Guatemala visit, since the country's major airport sits inside the city limits.

well, this is the only problem. Guatemala city and all the country is really dangerous. But take it easy, we recomended to rent a car in the capital and you are not going to have any problem. HOW TO COOK BALEADAS

A quick and satisfying breakfast, lunch or evening meal, baleadas are thick flour tortillas folded over a variety of fillings. The most common filling for baleadas is a simple mix of beans, cheese and the Honduran-style sour cream known asmantequilla.

More elaborate fillings include meat, eggs and avocado. Customize to your taste. For a fast snack, you can use store-bought flour tortillas. But for authentic flavor, make your own. It's easy!

4 to 6 servings

INGREDIENTS

-Flour tortillas (recipe below) -- 8

-Refried beans -- 2 cups

-Crumbled queso duro, cotija or feta cheese -- 1/2 cup

-Mexican-style sour cream (cream agria) -- 1/4 cup

METHOD

Heat an ungreased griddle, comal or skillet over medium flame. Meanwhile, heat up the refried beans in a saucepan, stirring in a little water.

Place a tortilla into the skillet and heat it on both sides to soften it up. Place the tortilla on a serving plate. Smear some refried beans on one half of the tortilla, sprinkle it with some crumbled cheese and drizzle it with a little sour cream. Fold the tortilla in half over the filling.

Repeat with the remaining tortillas and serve hot.

BALEADAS VARIATIONS

You can mix a lot of thing to baleada like meat, avocado, "chorizo", sweet pepper or chile.

-Other Baleadas Fillings: Scrambled eggs; cooked and seasoned ground beef or pork, sliced avocado, pickled jalapeños, or repollo coleslaw (see curtido recipe).

-Tortillas de Harina (Homemade flour tortillas): Flour tortillas in Honduras are a little thicker than those of their Mexican friends to the north. Making your own at home is easy, but it does take a little time. You'll fall in love with the results:

.Flour -- 2 cups

.Baking powder -- 1 teaspoon

.Salt -- pinch

.Water or milk -- 1/2 to 3/4 cup

.Butter, lard or oil -- 3 tablespoons

Mix together the flour baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Stir in 1/2 cup of the water or milk to form a dough. Work in the butter, lard or oil until smooth. Add more liquid or flour as needed to form a smooth dough that isn't too sticky.

Remove the dough to a floured work surface and knead until smooth. Cover with a clean dish towel and set aside to rest for at least 30 minutes.

Heat an ungreased comal, griddle or skillet over medium flame. Cut the dough into 8 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball. Roll each ball out into roughly an 8-inch round, about 1/8-inch thick.

Place a dough round onto the hot comal and cook for about 1 minute on each side, or until the tortilla has browned spots and is lightly puffed. Set aside and repeat with the remaining dough rounds.

The Beauty of Honduras...

In general we are used to watch in the news about violence and crime around the world. Especially in Latin America, but one country stands up for that Ranking, and this place happened to be my home country, Honduras…

But I am not here to tell you all about the problems that we might have, because I am sure that nobody wants to fill their lives with negativity. I am here to tell you that all of this bad propaganda is just nonsense, and there are some awesome things as well.

What I mean to say is that we are so much more than poverty, violence and crime. We are a country of hope, happiness and beauty. As a Honduran myself, I have traveled a lot, lived in 5 Countries and 7 different cities around the world, and now I am back home.

I can assured you that this whole “Is Dangerous” campaign is simply not true, Honduras has so much to offer, so much culture and love that I am a little overwhelmed myself with this. I was living abroad the last 7 years and I came back 3 months ago, and let me tell you that all the negative publicity that we give to the world is just that, Bad Marketing.

I don’t pretend to insult or compare with other countries, but Honduras has it all.

From Mountains to lakes, from wonderful beaches to green forest, Ancient cultures and delicious food. And the best of all, it is still really cheap compared with the rest of the world.

So now is my duty to share with you guys the beauties and great things that we have, and I hope that you can come to visit us, because I can tell you from the bottom of my heart, you won’t regret your travel to Honduras.

What to do and How to Arrive to Guanaja, Honduras

Guanaja is the easternmost of Honduras’s Bay Islands, which also include Utila and Roatan. While Guanaja Honduras is the least touristed of the Bay Islands trio, it’s the most distinctive in many ways, not least when it comes to looks—the island is a tall, mountainous land mass covered in Caribbean pine, split in two by a man-made channel, and surrounded by glowing water.

Guanaja’s main community, Bonacca, is actually a tiny, crowded cay right off the main island. The cay has been called the “Little Venice of the Caribbean”—it’s crisscrossed with canals that teem with colorful boats and canoes, navigating Bonacca’s packed streets.

Most budget hotels are located in Bonacca. However, Guanaja’s most spectacular attractions are its forests, rivers, and miles of unspoiled beaches, so it’s worth paying a little extra to stay on the main island, at least for a night or two.

Guanaja is clearly the island least visited by tourists. Many yachtsmen also choose to bypass the island in favor of the more developed Roatan.

However, Guanaja Diving Resorts are very cozy and offer magnificent views and world class Honduras Diving with some outstanding open water experiences to enhance your Honduras Travel.

Banking is limited on the island of Guanaja. There is only one bank, Banco Atlantida, and no ATMs. It is recommended you carry cash, as traveler’s checks are not accepted, and cannnot be changed at the bank. Almost all establishments do not accept credit cards.

What to Do:

Sunbathers, rejoice! Guanaja has a number of beautiful beaches. One of the island’s best stretches of sand is owned by The End of The World Resort, while the West Peak Inn borders the largest. Guanaja’s resorts are often smallish, family-run enterprises, offering everything from inland treks to snorkeling and scuba diving in the Bay Islands’ famous reefs.

More than anything else, Guanaja scuba diving is underscoring the island on travelers’ maps. The second largest barrier reef in the world begins near Guanaja and extends north towards Belize and the Yucatan.

Non-divers can hike between Mangrove Bight and Savannah Bight, Guanaja’s second-largest settlements, or trek inland to behold sparkling waterfalls among the trees—90 percent of Guanaja is a forested National Reserve. Travelers can also rent bikes or sea kayaks and explore the coast.

How to arrive:

You can arrive to guanaja from tegucigalpa or san pedro sula by airplane in Aerolinea sosa (https://www.aerolineasosahn.com) From Tegucigalpa about $ 100 round trip.

Fastest - Fly to Roatan and then charter a boat or flight directly to Guanaja on the weekly Saturday flight from Roatan (see details below).
Second Fastest - Fly to Roatan and then take two 15-30 minutes flights: one to La Ceiba on the mainland and then another to Guanaja

Flying from the US to Roatan or the mainland:

Keep in mind because there is only one flight to Guanaja a day that you may not be able to connect the same day.

To Roatan - You can fly the following airlines: Continental, Delta, Taca. Continental flies into and departs Roatan on Thursdays (During Peak Times), Saturdays and Sundays

To La Ceiba - I am not aware of any direct flights from the US to La Ceiba. You must fly through either Roatan, Tegucigalpa, or San Pedro Sula then onto La Ceiba. Since Sosa Airlines is the only one currently flying to Guanaja, you have to connect through La Ceiba

To San Pedro Sula - American and Continental fly to San Pedro Sula. From here take Sosa Airlines to La Ceiba then onto Guanaja

It`s the paradise on earth!!! Just go, relax and enjoy this beautiful and cheap place in Honduras. Another beaches on the caribbean are not prettier than Guanaja, but more expensive by sure. You can invest in this island, living for some months or just going to relax some days.

Parque comercial Paseo los Proceres y Novacentro

Desde que me fui de Honduras alla por el 2006, hasta ahora el 2016, Tegucigalpa ha tenido un cambio realmente IMPRESIONANTE. Antes solia hacer una ciudad aburrida, sosa y sin nada que hacer. En estos tiempos eso ha cambiado. Ahora contamos con muchos lugares divertidos para pasear, tomar algo, comer y salir de la rutina.

El parque comercial los Proceres y Novacentro, tiene el modelo internacional de "ciudad empresarial" ya que cuenta con 4 fronteras que divide el lugar con el resto. El complejo comercial de los Proceres cuenta con condominios de lujo y locales comerciales con buenos restaurantes y bares en su parte inferior, el lujoso hotel internacional Hyatt place, el edificio de banco Lafise, Gourmet center, un paseo con variedad de excelentes restaurantes, mas locales comerciales, Supermercado Paiz y el Mall Novacentro, que cuenta con Foodcourt, variedad de tiendas, Cine, parque de juegos y hasta Teatro.

La costumbre dicta visitar todos los bares en una sola noche tomando un trago en cada bar. En el tercer nivel de Novacentro encontrará Baretto, un bar “lounge” para mayores de 25 años. Las fiestas de Baretto tienen la fama de ser muy entretenidas. Nox, en la entrada de Novacentro, es otra buena opción para parrandear a lo grande; los últimos éxitos musicales y buenas promociones en bebidas son las insignias del local.

Novacentro y los proceres son uno de los lugares mas exclusivos de la capital hondureña aunque sus precios no son tan elevados como en otros paises. La ubicación es muy centrica y cercana a la colonia Palmira, Lara, colonia Matamoros y colonia san carlos. Todos buenos lugares para pasear libremente.

San Juan de Ojojona es un municipio del departamento de Francisco Morazán en Honduras, según algunos datos históricos no hay una fecha de fundación exacta sin embargo aparecen algunos escritos que su fundación fue en 1,569 por mineros españoles dedicados a los trabajos de las minas de oro y plata de la zona.

El municipio en su casco urbano, está compuesto por el centro histórico y se localizan en la plaza: las iglesias católicas, casas históricas, la municipalidad (esta composición muy de un típico pueblo español) así mismo cuenta con tres iglesias, el mercado municipal, tres pabellones artesanales (que son administrados por la Alcaldía Municipal) La Casa Consistorial, La Casa de la Cultura, pequeñas tiendas artesanales, cafeterías y comedores; que constituyen parte del Patrimonio Cultural del Municipio.

El municipio de Ojojona se encuentra a 34 km al sur de la ciudad de Tegucigalpa, M.D.C. y ofrece una interesante variedad de alfarería y artesanías en madera. Se encuentra a 7 km de la carretera Panamericana que se dirige hacia el sur.

El Mirador: Es una loma llena de pinos en las afueras del pueblo donde se tiene una vista maravillosa y se puede visualizar el pueblo desde lo alto o tener un día de campo.

Las Aguas Cristales: Son aguas cristalinas con hermosas cascadas y paisajes maravillosos
Cruz de los Milagros: Es un monumento que se conserva de los antepasados y sirven como un punto de reunión de largas caminatas que realizan los fieles y creyentes.
Minas de Guasucarán: Fueron explotadas por los españoles y son las que se resaltan en nuestro escudo nacional.

Rancho Chilate: Es un pequeño caserío donde se mantiene la tradición del almuerzo campestre, el chilate y las rosquillas en miel. Aquí se celebra el famoso Guancaso entre Ojojona-Lepaterique con una lunada y el almuerzo campestre.
Museo Pablo Zelaya Sierra: Lugar donde se exhiben pinturas antiguas, es especial un cuadro de la sangre de cristo que fue encontrado en una de las iglesias.

Fiestas en Ojojona

Feria Tradicional del 14 al 22 de enero: Celebración del tradicional Guancasco, que consisten en el encuentro entre dos pueblos con la participación de sus habitantes, líderes comunales, religiosos y corporaciones municipales, con el propósito de reafirmar los lazos de amistad. Es una feria a lo grande con gran colorido por lo autóctono y folclórico de sus bailes, música, gastronomía, juegos entre otras actividades.

Feria Patronal San Juan Bautista: Feria que se celebra del 20-27 de Junio y consiste en diversas actividades, tanto culturales como religiosas, alegres alboradas, quema de pólvora, bailes, música, eventos deportivos y otros.

Feria Navideña Artesanal: Se celebra del 7-10 de diciembre, es una feria promovida por la Fundación Amigos de Ojojona, que se creo hace un año, que se realiza con el fin de promover la comercialización de productos artesanales agrícolas y así ayudar a los pequeños comerciantes a que vendan sus productos a mejores precios y buscar venta en el exterior, en esta feria se involucra la Secretaría De Turismo, Alcaldía Municipal y personas voluntarias.

Está situado al noreste a solo 22 kilómetros de la capital de Honduras, en medio de las montañas de Los Lagos, El Carrizal, Palo Hueco y Chinacla. En 1781 fue parte del Curato de Santa Lucía.

Es un paraíso turístico donde los visitantes encuentran la excusa perfecta para pasar un fin de semana lleno de aventura y diversión en compañía de sus familias. Valle de Ángeles es más que un parque central.

Entre las atracciones está la arquitectura colonial y campesina, senderismo, museo, arte contemporáneo, artesanía y deportes extremos, sin faltar la gastronomía local.

Se sabe que fue conocido con los nombres La Marranera y El Cimarrón. Durante la era del Gobernador Intendente de Honduras, Ramón Anguiano, la comunidad El Cimarrón (ahora Valle de Ángeles) sólo contaba con 44 residentes de origen español.

En 1865, pasa a ser un municipio. En 1996, se eleva a categoría de ciudad turística, por lo que ahora ofrece a sus visitantes una forma sana y agradable de entretenimiento.
