Barely had some time passed after Balboa had first seen the Pacific, than the Panama City was founded. The founder of Panama City was Pedro Arias de Avila also known as Pedrarias. He was a governor of Spanish origin. He founded the City of Panama in 1519. This city had a strong Spanish control and was governed by them. The Spanish settlements became an integral part of the city and began to have complete control over the government and church authorities. But all this was short lived. In 1671, a pirate of English origin ransacked the beautiful Panama City. This pirate known as Sir Henry Morgan destroyed the entire City of Panama apart from the stone ruins of Panama Viejo.

It took three whole years to reestablish the city again. This time the city was reextablished approximately eight kms to the southwest area. This place is presently known as Casco Viejo. This city was located in a peninsular location. This was a source of security to them as the city was very well defended. Unfortunately in 1746, the Caribbean port at Portobelo was destroyed. This had a very adverse effect on the Spanish trading as they were used to this overland trading route. Post this the Panama City gradually faded away from limelight. In 1950 the epoch-making Panama Railroad construction was complete. This marked the entry of gold seekers who were on their way to California from across the Isthmus. Thus the Panama Railroad was an instant hit and was detrimental to bring the great city of Panama back to limelight.

On 3rd November 1903 Panama attained independence from Columbia. The place where this was declared is known as Parque de la Independencia, The new Panama City was now the uncompleted capital of the newly founded nation. The City of Panama grew in the international market after it was declared that it was a major center for international business and trade. This development took place in 1914.

In the present day Panama City is considered to be one of the richest cities in Central America. Previously governed by the government of America, Panama City finally got a chance to prove its mantle after the Canal was handed over in 1999. This was followed by the closure of American military bases in the country.

With relentless efforts the city of Panama will rise above the rest and will surely be the power to reckon with.

The history of Panama City is indeed full of intrigue and definitely interesting to know more about.

La Mosquitia can be described as the biggest territory of the virgin tropical rainforest of Central America as well as Northern Hemisphere. Often, people, especially the tourists coming to this part of the world refer to this region as the mini Amazon. La Mosquitia covers a large part of northeastern territories of Honduras and is mainly home to several rural settlements. La Mosquitia is not an extremely populated part of Central America; the villages of this region are sparsely populated by indigenous groups such as Miskitos, Pech, Garifuna and Tawahka.

La Mosquitia houses 5 separate natural zones; they are: Tawahka Anthropological and Río Plátano Biosphere Reserves, Cruta Caratasca Wildlife Refuge, Patuca National Park and Rus Rus Biological Reserve. Majority of these natural zones are still untouched and are inhabited by different rare and common wildlife. There are not many tour companies arranging tours to this part of Central America. You will come across only one or two indigenous tour agencies that offer trips to La Mosquitia.

La Mosquitia was inhabited for the first time during the 1000 B.C. The first inhabitants were Indians, who used speak Chibcha as their mother tongue. They came to this Central American terrain from countries of South America. It is also believed that Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of Americas halted in region for some days in the year 1502.

The most exciting way of reaching this part of Honduras is by boat. In Honduras’s north coast, you will come across boat services that will take you to La Mosquitia. However, boasts are not available on each day of a week; you will have to be aware of the departure time and date of the boat and book your seat in advance.
