FELT A GOSSAMER SCARF IRIDESCENT SILK

Starting with a lovely two tone shimmering silk scarf we will then create unique designs with wisps of soft merino wool, perhaps accenting it with a touch of silk roving. After lay out is complete you will learn how to wet felt in a way to encourage the wool to work though the silk before hardening to a solid fabric. Everyone will leave with a beautiful, featherweight scarf to keep an evening chill at bay. Students should bring several old towels and wear comfortable shoes. No experience necessary. This class is somewhat physical, so students should have a certain amount of endurance. Workshop fee is $80.00 which includes morning coffee and danish, lunch and equipment use. Materials fee ($20.00) is additional paid the day of class.

Our next meeting!

The Central Delmarva Fiber Guild invites the public to a presentation on the history of fiber and textiles. The presentation will be held at the Snow Hill Library on March 8th at 7 pm. During this informative and lively presentation participants will learn about different types of fiber and the many creative uses for them, such as spinning, weaving, and felting. Demonstrations will be done on the drop spindle and spinning wheel. There will also be discussion about plans for Central Delmarva Fiber Guild for 2010. This program is free and open to all.

February Fiber Guild Meeting

During the last meeting we had a lot of discussion about what the fiber guilds goals are. What we are supposed to be doing. After much discussion it was decided that the goals of the Central Delmarva Fiber Guild would be as follows:
1) Promoting awareness of the Fiber Arts
A) Which includes quarterly public demos at such places as libraries, Barnes and nobles , historical reenactments, schools etc,
B) Donations of finished products to charitable organizations.

2) Promoting continued education of the Fiber Arts
A) Which includes classes, demos and sharing of knowledge within all the fiber arts.

3) Promote artists and businesses in the Fiber Arts
A) Including a yearly fiber festival and fiber arts show/contest with diverse categories of fiber arts.

It was also decided that at this time there would be no yearly dues.

Of course there is so much more to work out but we are off to a good start for 2010.

The next scheduled meeting for The Central-Delmarva Fiber Guild will be at Upper Room Studio on February 9th at 7pm for a demo of triangular weaving. Demo will show how to start as well as how to finish a project on the loom. Come join the fun!
There will also be a business meeting to decide the duties of the officers, elect officers for this year, and decide upon the status of the fiber guild whether it should be an independent nonprofit organization or if we should stay under the Purnell Museum. We still need all the input and help we can get so please, come and let us know what you think!

If anyone is interested in helping the Central Delmarva Fiber Guild please come to the meeting on Jan 11th at the Snow Hill Library from 7:00-9:00 pm.

Will the Fiber Guild continue? Hopefully, we'll know by the end of the night.

We need your ideas and input. We will be discussing the mission statement and goals of the Central Delmarva Fiber Guild.

What would you like to see the Guild do or become? Should we just meet together to work on projects? Should we be more interested in educating the public or service orientated? Should we try to schedule classes for our guild memebers? Should we even have dues? Should the meetings rotate from place to place. Come share your vision, ideas, expertise, and sense of humor.

Bring your questions and (hopefully) some answers to the meeting.

Come join Upper Room Studio on Thurs Dec 17th at 6:30pm for their first ever Christmas party!

We have had so much fun all year!

Refreshments will be provided but feel free to bring a dessert if you would like!

There will be a FREE drawing for 2 pairs of Lantern Moon knitting needles.

We will also be giving out patterns for a charity project we are participating in to help support our troops.

I am happy to announce that Connie DeLameter will be conducting two workshops at This'll Do Farm in Salisbury, MD, on October 31, and November 1, 2009.

Saturday, October 1: Painting with Wool

Come paint your own calming pasture scene or perhaps a lovely flower garden, using dyed wool as the paint, a felting needle as the brush, and a piece of prefelt for the canvas. After working on your wall hanging most of the day with the felting needle, we will finish it by quickly wet felting the piece, to forever lock the design in place. Materials fee: $20. Students will need to bring a 9”X12” piece of foam that is 2” thick (or may be purchased from instructor), several old towels, and a couple of pictures for inspiration. (Hint: impressionistic works well.)

Sunday, November 1: Luscious Lock Scarf

We will be using the very soft merino wool roving for the base of the scarves, with options of reversible two tones, variegated roving (multi-color), or solid color with surface design. The base will be laid out to be very lightweight, yet supply plenty of warmth. During lay out, we will add the beautiful soft locks of the Wensleydale sheep along the edge to give a fancy flair. Warning, all of your friends will want one too. Time permitting, lay out of the Wensleydale wool for the base will be shown also. Materials fee: $12- $14. Students will need to bring several old towels, and wear comfortable shoes.

The workshop will be limited to 8 participants each day. Cost will be $80 per person, per day.

Workshops will begin each day at 9:00 a.m., and end at 4:00 p.m. Coffee and muffins will be served in the morning, and a light lunch will be provided. Call Sandy Hornung at 410-546-0101 or email sandyhornung@msn.com for more information or registration materials.

You will love working with Connie. She and her husband Dave, live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland at Delly's Delights Farm with about 15 angora rabbits and their flock of sheep (Romneys and Border Leicesters) just down the road. She has been involved with the fiber world over 20 years; dying, spinning, weaving, and felting. In recent years, this has become her full-time job, focusing on her felt and dye work. She has studied with many well-known international felters and attended various intense felting events, broadening her knowledge along the way. Connie loves the felting world because of the unlimited possibilities it presents. Her work is exhibited at many east coast craft/art shows and fiber events.

Fiber Fest Information

We're looking for volunteers to help with the festival - manning the children's craft table, helping with the consignment booth, general answering questions of attendees (where's the bathroom?!) - then please contact the museum: www.purnellmuseum.com.

You can also visit the above link for more information in general about the festival. It's an annual event, this year being on Saturday, October 10 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. in Snow Hill, Maryland. Admission is free, and besides lots of fiber related vendors, there are other vendors of handcrafted items as well as food!

Fellow fiber enthusiasts - it's time to meet to plan our events for 2009! Our March meeting will be on Monday, March 9 and held at Upper Room Studio in Berlin - the new fiber shop run by Monika and Lisa Lilley. Meeting time is 6:00 p.m.

Claire from the Julia A. Purnell museum will be talking a bit about Snow Hill's Community Loom Project. If you have any fabric scraps or left over yarns you'd be willing to donate, they would be greatly appreciated.

Upper Room Studio is located at 8525 Logtown Road in Berlin. See this Google map for directions. Please drop me a note if you can attend so we can get a rough estimate on the number attending. If you have not yet paid your dues for 2009, please plan to pay them at the meeting. (Membership is $10 per person for one year).

Do you have bags or baskets of fabric scraps in need of a good home? Here is a chance to put them to good use:

Each year the town of Snow Hill sponsors a community art project to engage residents in a town-wide art endeavor that reflects the character and history of the town. For 2009 the Snow Hill Arts & Entertainment Committee will be leading the creation of a series of circular weavings on community looms.

The committee is in need of scrap fabric for use in this project. They can be dropped off at the Julia A. Purnell Museum in Snow Hill during the week, or call Claire at the museum to inquire, 410-632-0515. The committee is holding a work session on Monday, March 9 at 2pm at the Old Fire Station in downtown Snow Hill. We will be sorting out the donated materials. Anyone interested in being part of the project is invited to join in.

Knitting and Spinning Weekend Getaway at the Merry Sherwood.You're Invited! Come spend a relaxing weekend knitting and spinning, learning new techniques, and having fun!
Below are a detailed list of the activities. Following that are the price details.

Friday, March 20
7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Yarn Tasting
Try out a variety of yarns and fibers. You'll also be able to test drive a variety of knitting needles as well. Every taster will get a goody bag of treats. Light refreshments will be served. Cost is $25 per person.

Saturday, March 21
9:00 a.m.- Noon - Class Session A:
Classes are $45/person. You will choose your class when you register. Additional fees for supplies or kits may apply and will be listed in the class descriptions.

12:15 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. - Lunch:
A lovely spread of meats, cheeses, and rolls; pasta salad; finger desserts, and more along with tea, coffee, and punch. Cost is $15 per person.

1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. - Class Session B:
Classes are $45/person. You will choose your class when you register. Additional fees for supplies or kits may apply and will be listed in the class description.

Guests are on their own for dinner. Staff of Merry Sherwood are happy to make suggestions of area restaurants.
Upon returning from dinner, the fireplaces will be lit and guests are encouraged to sit in the ballroom and spin or knit all evening. Wear your PJ's and fuzzy slippers! There may be games and prizes!

Sunday, March 22
9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Brunch
Dine on a fantastic buffet of egg dishes, french toast, meats, fruits, and muffins. Coffee, tea, and juice will be served. Mingle with vendors in the Fiber Craft Faire before it opens to the general public. Cost is $20 per person.

Noon - 2 p.m. Fiber Craft Faire
Stacy from The Fine Needle, the Lilley's from Upper Room Studio, and more will have set up small tables of fiber, yarn, and hand-made items. From handcrafted soaps to hand dyed roving, you're sure to find some great treasures you can't live without. Brunch attendees will be able shop from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. There is no fee to attend the Fiber Craft Faire.

Upper Room Studio Opening

Berlin's newest art studio may be off the beaten track, but it represent the continuation of the town's emphasis on regional arts. Upper Room Studio is located on Logtown Road, just off Route 50, in a cozy studio space. The business specializes in spinning wheels, looms, and fiber art accessories, and plans to offer classes in spinning, weaving, felting and jewelry making.
“Interest in fiber art has been growing, in our area and around the country. A lot of knitters and crocheters are branching out into spinning and weaving,” says proprietor Lisa Lilley. “We wanted to share our love of the fiber arts with the community,” adds Monika Lilley, the other half of this mother-daughter business team.
Upper Room Studio sells spinning wheels and looms by internationally known companies Louet, Schacht, and Ashford, and will soon be adding products from Kromski to their inventory. Handcrafted items including jewelry, shawls, purses, and hand-spun yarn are also available for purchase.
A grand opening celebration will be held at the studio on Saturday, February 14 from 10am to 4pm. There will be fiber art demonstrations, door prizes and refreshments. Guests are welcome to test drive the eleven showroom spinning wheels.Even those with no background in the fiber arts often catch the spinning and weaving bug after sitting down at a wheel or loom, warn the Lilleys. “It's creative and meditative and has a connection to the handicrafts of our ancestors. For a lot of people, it's a meaningful antidote to the modern world of mass production,” says Monika Lilley.

Cabin Fever Fiber Night

Hi all and Happy New Year!

Now that the mad rush of the holidays is over it's time to get down to some serious FUN fiber crafting. Join the Fiber Guild for an evening of crafting and relaxing at the Snow Hill Library on Monday, January 12 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Bring whatever you're working on, a light snack to share, and some fiber to trade (if you wish).

As the year begins, it's also time for dues, which are $10 for voting members ($5 for children/non-voting members). What do dues get you? Discounts at guild events and some local retailers offer a discount as well. Membership cards will be available at the Cabin Fever Fiber Night.

Louet S15 For Sale

Louet S 15 spinning wheel $300
This is a used S15 spinning wheel that spins fine and is in very good used condition.
There is a small nick and scratch on the back that won’t even show in the photo and does not affect the performance of the wheel.
I highly recommend Louet as it is a sturdy and awesome wheel for beginners, as well as advanced spinners. I have tried many wheels and don’t want to part with it but need the money and…I do have another one.
Again the wheel is in good shape and comes with 3 bobbins and attatched lazy kate and a niddy noddy for winding your spun yarn.

The Central Delmarva Fiber Guild will be holding a meeting on Monday, November 10. The gathering will take place at 6pm in the meeting room of the Worcester County Library in Snow Hill. New and prospective members are welcome to attend. The guild includes weavers, quilters, spinners, knitters, crocheters, tatters and more. Those wishing to learn these skills are invited to join the guild as well.

The Central Delmarva Fiber Guild provides a network for regional fiber artists and those interested in learning fiber art skills. Members of diverse interests and skill levels are welcomed; the guild includes professional fiber artists, hobbyists, experts and beginners.

Festival Foods

There are a couple of additional food vendors for FiberFest, which I am pleased to report. The Girdletree Volunteer Fire Department will be selling clam fritters to raise funds for their efforts, our friends from Abundant Life Apostolic Church will be back selling hot dogs, hamburgers, and fries as a fundraiser for their youth group. There will also be breads and baked goods from Olivia's breads. Olivia's Breads is an area bakery business specializing in organic and natural ingredients and supporiting local agriculture, fair trade and environmental awareness in their choice of ingredients and materials.
