Gardening Tips: lets feed our feathered fancies

Our fine feathered friends deserve a tea party in the yard, here is how to use some vintage tea cups for
bird feeders. This idea can also be used for luminaries at weddings or a fantastic little girl tea party!! I am going to make one just to put outside my dining room window and watch my friends have a feast.

You will need:

3 feet of 1/2 inch copper plumbing pipe per bird feeder (I paid $4 for three feet at a hardware store) try and recycle if you can with left overs found in the garage
copper cap
sand paper or sanding block
teacup (check out the goodwill, re- habitat stores, discount shops) recycle here!
epoxy
(I used 5 minute epoxy. If you are making a bunch of these go for the slower drying epoxy.)
mixing tray and bamboo stick
Q-tip
birdseed

Gather your vintage teacups. you can do more that one at a time if you want to make many for an event or even bridesmaids gifts, mothers day presents for moms and grandmoms.

The Epoxy needs to be fast dry- 5 min. , for china, metal. ( don't know what that is, ask the guy at the hardware or crafting store to help you, epoxy is usually in the same area as most glues). It is a 2 step process with 2 separate channels in the plunger that don't mix until you are ready.

Sand bottom of copper cap

Sand bottom of cup, inside of saucer and bottom of saucer. This will help to make them adhere better.

Don't skip this step, sanding is very important, or it will not stick well.

Mix Epoxy next, taking care to read the instructions, mix with a bamboo stick or paint stirrer. Use the Q-tip then to apply the epoxy. Wear gloves and take care of your hands. This is not the time to let the kids help.

Place epoxy on rim of cup and inside of saucer.

Set cup on top of saucer and hold in place for a few seconds.

Let sit for half an hour. After it has set, turn it over and place a dab of epoxy on copper cap and back of saucer. Go make yourself a nice cup of hot tea while you are letting the epoxy set up, don't mind if I do.

Let sit for half an hour. Meantime, sand copper pipe to bring out its sheen.

When set, place copper pipe inside the cap and poke into ground.

The copper pipe will turn a cool patina green color with age and add to the vintage look

You can use these as a bird bath, if you do place feed in the cup, make sure to keep clean and dry often, with no drainage in the cup if it gets wet, you will have a messy mess of slimy yuck and your feathered friends don't want to eat that

Resolving to befriend change

This is the time of year when we all want to start over, to make things better, to move forward into a brighter future.

Perfectly understandable. As humans, we have the intelligence and forethought to choose goals and work toward them.

But I think for most of us, myself included, our underlying desire is to create a positive, permanent state that will eliminate discomfort and uncertainty forever. We want our lives to be perfect, and then to stay that way. We want to solve our problems once and for all.

Also perfectly understandable. But not the way life works. As the Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, change is the only constant. So as we resolve to attempt some big changes in our lives, perhaps one of our goals could be to make friends with change itself, to acknowledge whatever the tides bring and to figure out how to take full advantage of it, even if it seems "bad."

Pema Chodron, in her book When Things Fall Apart, talks about this approach to life's uncertainties:

Things falling apart is a kind of testing and also a kind of healing. We think that the point is to pass the test or to overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don't really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and fall apart again. It's just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.

When we think that something is going to bring us pleasure, we don't know what's really going to happen. When we think something is going to give us misery, we don't know. Letting there be room for not knowing is the most important thing of all. We try to do what we think is going to help. But we don't know. We never know if we're going to fall flat or sit up tall. When there's a big disappointment, we don't know if that's the end of the story. It may be just the beginning of a great adventure.

Let's be ready for whatever the future brings, open to its gifts and its challenges. Let's breathe through change, that dear friend who is always present.

Hello, and Happy New Year to everyone!

My name is Karen Skidmore, and I am the owner of Completely Fit, a personal training and fitness company located in Mount Airy, Md. I am a team leader for one of the groups in The Mommies Network Weigh-In Challenge.

All my team members have started off strong and are working very hard to accomplish their goals. They were asked to fill out a detailed questionnaire about their current nutritional and fitness habits, and answer questions about what changes they wanted to create. Based on that information, I have helped each person come up with a detailed action plan that will not only help to accomplish her goals, but more importantly, help to improve her lifestyle.

If you are looking to make a change in your life but are not a part of the Weigh-In Challenge, you too can do it with just a few small changes at a time.

If your nutrition is off track, start by taking away one unhealthy food once a week and replacing it with a healthy food.

If your exercise routine is off track, start by finding something you really enjoy doing — walking, biking, or swimming — and adding 10 minutes of that exercise to your day. Before you know it, exercise will have become a daily routine.

Be sure to track your results, as we do much better when we can see our progress.

Yield Makes about 100

Ingredients

2 envelopes (each 1 scant tablespoon) unflavored gelatin
1 1/2 cups sugar
2/3 cup light corn syrup
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Vegetable-oil cooking spray

Directions

Coat a 12-by-17-inch rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray; line with parchment paper. Spray parchment; set aside. Pour 1/3 cup cold water into the bowl of an electric mixer. Sprinkle with gelatin; let mixture soften, about 5 minutes.
Place sugar, corn syrup, salt, and 1/3 cup water in a medium saucepan. Cover; bring to a boil. Remove lid; cook, swirling pan occasionally, until syrup reaches 238 degrees (soft-ball stage) on a candy thermometer, about 5 minutes.
With mixer on low speed, whisk gelatin mixture, and slowly pour the syrup in a steady stream down the side of the bowl (to avoid splattering). Gradually raise speed to high; beat until mixture is thick, white, and has almost tripled in volume, about 12 minutes. Add vanilla, and beat 30 seconds to combine.
Pour mixture onto prepared baking sheet; smooth with an offset spatula. Let stand at room temperature, uncovered, until firm, at least 3 hours or overnight.
Coat a 1- or 2-inch snowflake-shaped cookie cutter with cooking spray to prevent it from sticking. Cut out as many individual marshmallows as possible; coat cutter with more spray as needed. Use marshmallows immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature up to 1 week.

Happy New Year 2012~~~

Starting off the year with some warm delicious Mexican Rice Tortilla soup, recipe from
DrGreene.com and Anni Daulter
A simmering soup makes the house smell yummy and gives children an opportunity to sample amazing flavors. Save the leftovers for a side dish at dinner.

Makes 6 servings

Ingredients:

• 3 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 medium onion, chopped
• 2 garlic cloves, minced
• 1/4 cup fresh cilantro
• 1 cup corn kernels, fresh or canned
• 6 cups vegetable stock
• 1 cup rice
• 1 can (28 ounces) whole tomatoes
• 1 ripe tomato, chopped
• 2 teaspoons sea salt
• 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
• 1 chile pepper, seeded and chopped
• 1 teaspoon chili powder
• 1 teaspoon wheat germ
• 1/2 lemon

Garnishes
• 1/4 cup grated Cheddar cheese
• Sour cream
• Lime wedges
• Blue corn tortilla chips, crushed
• 1/4 cup cilantro

Instructions:

1. Pour the oil into a medium saucepan over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the onion, garlic, cilantro, corn, and a dash of salt and pepper. Cook until the onion is tender. Set aside.
2. Combine the stock, rice, canned and fresh tomatoes, salt, black pepper, chile pepper, chili powder, and wheat germ in a large stockpot. Squeeze the juice from the lemon into the pot. Add the reserved onion mixture. Stir together. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the rice is cooked well.
3. Serve with your choice of garnishes: some Cheddar, a dollop of sour cream, lime juice, tortilla chips, or cilantro. If your toddler cannot eat crunchy tortilla chips, let a few crumbled pieces soak in the soup to soften before serving.

Ideally the magical season of Christmas would instill a sense of cheerfulness and good will towards men; there are songs that sing about that very thing so it must be true. The harsh reality for me and others like me is that we can't wait for it to be over. Santa s everywhere are gasping I'm sure so I'll explain.

It all starts with the madness that engulfs Black Friday. Sure, we all want a great bargain but all you have to do is turn on the news and see how ridiculous society has gotten. This past November a woman pepper sprayed fellow shoppers because she wanted them out of her way so she could snag a coveted gaming system. Fellow shoppers were crying out in agony as their eyes burned and when the woman was arrested rightly so for her behavior, she wasn't even charged for assault. What message does this send?

Not soon after shopping season begins the bell ringers, serving a noble charity, are outside of all the stores. Now, if you are a charitable person you instinctively want to give and that's great. When you encounter 5 donation buckets or more in a day's trip the guilt sets in if you don't drop a dollar in each and every one because it doesn't seem right not to. How do you justify not giving when you are out spending money and there are so many needy that you could be helping? Make no mistake, the guilt is very real for many of us.

If you're aware of your surrounding you can't help but notice the amount of shoppers paying with credit cards and you know that for many they will be paying for this year's Christmas until next year comes. Staying on budget goes out the window when music that is designed to encourage spending is playing throughout the air and there's a group frenzy that feeds the manic behavior. I mean, we all want our kids to be happy Christmas morning don't we? If they're happy then we feel like we're good parents.

I remember back when I was a girl (and dinosaurs roamed the earth) we got some fruits and nuts and a few pieces of candy in our stocking. Today my own kids get gifts that fit in the stocking and even ask for specific items to go in them. Don't get me wrong, they're good kids and aren't being greedy because it's a practice I initiated. But I truly think they would laugh and question my sanity if they opened a stocking to find an orange and some peppermint. That makes me kind of sad.

It seems like each year there is increased pressure to out do each and every year either measured against ourself or our neighbors. Decorations are a competition, parties get bigger, toys get more complex and expensive and once it's all over the cheer that was spilling over gives way to the reality that bills are now due, lights have to be unstrung, a now brown brittle tree is going to a landfill along with tons of wrapping paper and Christmas cards and the toys that were so painstakingly chosen have mostly been forgotten.

The most wonderful time of the year just isn't for many of us. There are absolutely good times to be had and merriment to be made; We're not total Scrooges that hate the holiday. Unfortunately it gets harder and harder to see the good in the season even through all the sparkly lights and tinsel.

Oh the power of a mother who believes in her child and knows that they have a
talent, watch this touching example of a mom who constantly heckles singer "Michael
Buble" while he is on stage, until he actually lets her 15 yr old son on stage to sing with him.
What might have been the most embarrassing moment of that young man's life, was most likely the beginning of his career in music.

I was worried my kids wouldn't get to bed on time. It was close to the time they'd normally get their pajamas on, but it was a special night. Tonight was the night to decorate the Christmas tree.

When I saw the excitement in their eyes, my concern with their bedtime ended. While my thoughts were fixed on how crabby my kids would be the next day, their thoughts were on hope, promise, and the excitement of the holidays. On this night, hope and promise won out.

As I watched them running from the decorations to the tree, I began to feel their hope and excitement. I felt further and further away from the "everyday worries" that had bothered me moments before. And as I watched them working together to create something beautiful, something else happened.

I began to be filled with love for them.

I watched them for awhile longer, then said, "You know, you guys are great." Michael, my 6-year-old son, hesitated for a second. "You are too, Dad," he said.

It was my turn to hesitate. For a moment, I felt numb, and then the feelings came. Tears of joy and gratitude streamed down my face. "Thanks, buddy," I whispered back. Sarah, my eight-year old daughter, glanced at me and asked me if I was crying. "Yes, Sarah, I'm very happy right now," I told her. She walked over to me and gave me a hug. A second wave of feelings came, and I struggled to compose myself.

As I sat there hugging my daughter, there was a part of me that was concerned about my kids taking "emotional care" of me. It felt a bit uncomfortable to be crying in front of my kids, and it felt a bit odd having my daughter comforting me.

But there was something bigger here.

We were having "a moment." It was a moment where we felt how close we could be, and it was a moment when my kids were seeing my authentic joy and gratitude. A moment that we would all remember for the rest of our lives.

After "the moment" passed, we continued to decorate the tree with lights and ornaments. When we'd finished, we got back into the "daily routine" of bedtime preparations. When my wife and I had gotten our kids to bed, I reflected on the moment that had passed and my life as a parent.

I thought about how easy it was for all of us to feel unappreciated, disrespected, and taken for granted as parents. It sometimes seems that we do so much for our kids, and we don't get the recognition we deserve. When life gets hard, we often long for the past, or look to the future, but we avoid the beauty of the present.

And then a moment like this comes along. One of the moments that creates meaning in your life. The kind of moment that reminds you why you're doing all that you're doing. And when you experience this kind of moment, it's easier to live each day and each moment with joy and gratitude. It's easier to face the occasional drudgery of everyday life. And it's easier to remember why we were put on this earth: to love each other and to help create a better world through that love.

As you move into this holiday season, remember to open yourself to your own "moments." They can happen at any time, and they'll appear to you when you have the courage and awareness to open yourself to the present moment. These moments may be filled by joy or pain, but they should not be judged by how happy they make you. They should be judged by whether you open yourself to that moment, and whether this moment fills your heart and your spirit.

May your heart and spirit be filled with "moments" this holiday season, and may you teach your children to open themselves to this spirit as well.
