Nazaré, on the west coast of Portugal, is the home of the biggest waves in the world (just not when we were there). The enormous waves break to the north side of the headland that starts just to the right side of this frame. The waves are a phenomenon created by a large underwater canyon that terminates just in front (and to the north) of the promontory. On the south side – where this image looks – it’s generally a peaceful beach – which these two gulls were clearly enjoying their view of.

Wandering through Amarante, Portugal – on the Rio Tâmega somewhere a little south of the northwestern part of the country (okay – a little south of Porto) – well – some images just present themselves. A bridge has sat here since Roman times. The current span, named the São Gonçalo Bridge, has been in place since 1790.

Our year of Portugal calendars continues in Nazaré, on the west central coast – home of the largest waves in the world.

The south end of Nazaré’s North Beach (Praia do Norte) sits next to a spit of land that separates the north and south beaches. It’s right here that the enormous waves that bring the most daring surfers in the world to Portugal crash down.

Just not on this day.

After standing on top of this small headland, we drove to the upper end of the beach and then I hiked all the way to the south end – and if you know how much I despise sand – that’s saying something. And what’s worse – the ocean got me a minute later and drenched my shoes. The price one pays for photography.

Our year of Portugal calendars continues in Miranda Do Duoro.

This lovely little town, in the far northeast corner of Portugal, sits high up on the western banks of the famed Duoro River on the border with Spain. The area has been occupied since the Bronze Age, but the town was officially chartered in 1286. And while we share the lovely redbud in common with Miranda Do Duoro – they had these fortification walls dating back to the 1500s – and I’ve yet to find those in the US. Alas.

Our year of Portugal calendars continues in Sintra.

The famed (at least famous on Instagram) Initiation Well at Quinta da Regaleira is… interesting. Situated at the top of the property, you have to walk way up the hill to find it. The entrance to the almost 90′ well is just within some large standing rocks. If you didn’t know where it was, you would likely walk right past it. There are actually two such wells on the property. These wells never served as water sources. Instead, they were purportedly used for ceremonial purposes.

The larger well is surrounded by a large spiral staircase. You enter at the top, and walk down the nine flights of stairs to the bottom, where you enter a series of caves that lead you back out.

The well is filled with people every moment that the Quinta grounds are open. And photographically there’s no way to shoot down (or up) without seeing people so… on my second trip through I chose to shoot the only part of the well that was empty – which was the small area above the entrance. Pretty nevertheless – and peaceful.

We bid adieu to our year of California in 2025 and replace it with a year in… lovely Portugal.

We spent a couple weeks circumnavigating the country last April, and I collected enough variety to fulfill and entire year’s commitment to calendaring. We start We move from a year in California in 2025 to a year in… Portugal … for 2026.

We spent a few weeks covering every inch of the country we could in April of last year – and we’re kicking this year off with a spring staple of the country – blooming Wisteria. They were everywhere. This example sits on the Palace Hotel in Mata Nacional do Buçaco – a national park in the northwestern part of the country. It smelled wonderful. Orange trees and Wisteria abounded and it was an infectious perfume everywhere you went.

So get your year off in a flowery fashion and grab some Portuguese wisteria FTW!

We finish 2025 – the year of California – in downtown Los Angeles – the only really urban shot for the year – at the Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Like almost all Gehry projects – the steel shines dramatically and the curves are to die for. Hope you enjoyed the views for the year – we won’t be single source for 2026 – but we will be somewhat limiting our locations. Stay tuned.

The highest mountain in the 48 contiguous states of the USA sits only miles from the lowest point in the entire country and you can easily visit both in a few hours (albeit climbing to the top of this one – while a hike and not a climb – is strenuous and time-consuming).

Welcome to Mt. Whitney in the eastern Sierra Nevada range in California. Drift out of the small town of Lone Pine, through the Alabama Hills, and you can stand near the foot of this 14,505′ peak in short order. I spent a few nights in Lone Pine in 2015, where we explored the eastern side of Yosemite, Mono Lake, the Sierra Nevadas, and nearby Death Valley. It’s a rich vein of natural wonder to be sure.

We head to Ventura Harbor just north of Los Angeles for this month’s calendar. This harbor is where you access a unique national park – the Channel Islands – which collectively sit about 20 miles off the coast of California. And the fishing must be good because the bird life is very abundant – especially if you’re a California Brown Pelican.

Let’s get volcanic for the August summer doldrums – at Lassen Volcanic National Park. Lassen actually sits at the southern end of the Cascade range (think Rainier, St. Helens, etc.). Lassen Peak – the largest volcano in the park – may be the biggest and baddest volcano there, but this one is easier to walk to the top of (not that I chose to do it). This cone is a 700 foot high volcanic cone of loose scoria. Cinder cones are conical hills that form around volcanic vents when lava fragments solidify and accumulate. It holds that 30-35 degree angle because any steeper, and the scoria would just slide off. They think this was created around 1650 – so it’s not that old.

Our year of California calendars continues – and again we visit one of the great US National Parks – Yosemite. After a full day in the valley in the fall of 2023, we headed back out to Wawona for a night’s stay. Timing was on our side as we climbed out of the valley bottom and gazed up this fantastic sunset to the west. Not a bad ending to a good day.

Halfway through our year of California desktops – with a stop this month in the Channel Islands – about twenty miles off the coast from greater Los Angeles – and the home of Channel Islands National Park.

The island of Santa Cruz is the largest island within the Channel Islands – and a common destination when touring the park. It attracts kayaks and sailboats – both hiding in plain sight in this month’s image.

We make our second exposure in Yosemite as part of our 2025 Year in California. At truly one of my favorite locations, known as the Gates of the Valley – standing over the Merced River and looking at mighty El Capitan. That’s not a bad way to roll into May!

Our year in California continues – and just to confuse the issue – we take you to the Alabama Hills. The story goes that the Alabama Hills, near Lone Pine, CA, in the Sierra Nevadas, were named for the CSS Alabama, a Confederate warship deployed during the American Civil War. When news of the ship’s exploits reached prospectors in California sympathetic to the Confederates, they named many mining claims after the ship, and the name came to be applied to the entire range.

So California – with an Alabama touch. The arch in the frame is called the Mobius Arch, and if you head just a few miles west from Lone Pine – you’ll find it – in April or any month.
