USS New York Returns To New York

The new Navy assault ship USS New York, built with World Trade Center steel, arrived in its namesake city Monday with a rifle volley salute near the site of the 2001 terrorist attack.
First responders, families of Sept. 11 victims and the public gathered Monday at a waterfront viewing area, where they could see the crew standing at attention along the deck of the battleship gray vessel.
The big ship paused. Then the shots were fired, with a cracking sound, in three bursts.
The bow of the $1 billion ship, built in Louisiana, contains about 7.5 tons of steel from the fallen towers.
"It's a transformation ... from something really twisted and ugly," said Rosaleen Tallon, who lost her firefighter brother, Sean, on 9/11. "I'm proud that our military is using that steel."
Tallon said her brother, who was a Marine, would have been proud.
JoAnn Atlas, of Howells, N.Y., who lost her husband, fire Lt. Gregg Atlas, draped a flag-themed banner along the fence. The names of emergency workers who died were written on the red stripes.
"We have to remember. It's a way to honor them," she said.
Members of the public included Nancy DiGiacomo, who came from Huntington, N.Y., with her husband, 9-year-old son, mother and sister.
"I just thought it was important to see" the transformation of the tragedy's wreckage, said DiGiacomo. "From that, something else can come of it."
Lt. Cmdr. Colette Murphy, a Navy spokeswoman, said she was excited for those serving on board to see the city's "awe-inspiring" welcome.
At a short ceremony later at Pier 88 near the site of the aircraft carrier, the USS Intrepid, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the USS New York couldn't have a more fitting name, representing freedom, courage and resilience.
"This ship is actually a physical representation of that spirit with steel from the World Trade Center built into its bow so every friend that sets foot on it and every foe that dares challenge it will feel its power and know that it is literally made from the heart and soul of the city that has scarified so much," the mayor said.
Of the 361 sailors serving aboard the ship, around 13 percent are from New York state, which is higher than would normally be the case, Murphy said. There were many requests from Navy personnel to serve on the ship, which will carry some 250 Marines.
After the ground zero stop, the ship — escorted by about two dozen tugboats and other vessels — headed up the Hudson River toward the George Washington Bridge. After a U-turn there, it headed south to Pier 88. An official commissioning ceremony is scheduled for Saturday.
The New York will remain in the city through Veterans Day and then head to Norfolk, Va., for about a year of crew training and exercises, Murphy said.
The ship is 684 feet long and can carry as many as 800 Marines. Its flight deck that can handle helicopters and the MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft.
It was scheduled to be built before the terrorist attacks. About a year later, the announcement came that the ship would bear the name New York to honor the city, state, and those who died.
It's the latest in a line of Navy ships to bear that name. The others included a Spanish-American War-era cruiser, a battleship that served in World Wars I and II and a nuclear submarine retired from the fleet in 1997.
The ship is technically known as a San Antonio-class amphibious dock vessel. Four vessels in that class are in service, the USS San Antonio, USS New Orleans, USS Mesa Verde and USS Green Bay. Four others are being built. Of those, two also have been named in connection with the Sept. 11 attacks.
The USS Arlington was named to honor the attack on the Pentagon. The USS Somerset was named after the county in Pennsylvania where United Airlines flight 93 crashed.

Here SHE is, the USS New York, made from the World Trade Center !

USS New York

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center .

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, 'those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,' recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. 'It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.'

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the 'hair on my neck stood up.' 'It had a big meaning to it for all of us,' he said. 'They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back.'

The ship's motto? 'Never Forget'

Rockefeller Center

Rockefeller Center, originally known as Radio City is a complex of buildings developed in the midst of the Great Depression. Initially the complex consisted of 14 buildings, the 70 story RCA building being the tallest.

Metropolitan Opera

The area where the Rockefeller Center is located was originally planned as the new location for the Metropolitian Opera. The original area, between 48th and 51st streets, Fifth and Sixth avenue, was a red-light district owned by Columbia University. John D. Rockefeller Jr. leased the area on behalf of the Metropolitan Opera.
The design of the complex was done by the architect Benjamin Wistar Morris. When the Met abandoned the project after the 1929 stock market crash, Rockefeller came up with a plan for a corporate complex to house the new radio and television corporations. Radio City was born.

Radio City

One of the first buildings completed was the RCA building, which served as the headquarters of the Radio Corporation of America. The tower, clad in Indiana limestone, is at 70 stories and 256 meter / 850 ft the tallest of the complex. Its design by Raymond Hood - also known from the American Radiator Building in New York, the formerMcGraw-Hill building in New York and the Tribune Tower in Chicago - was the basis for all future buildings at the Rockefeller.

To lure tenants during the Depression, all efforts were made to ensure efficient use of the available floor space. Thanks to the setbacks each office was assured of natural light. Other assets were fast elevators, air-conditioning and excellent underground connections to the subway.
The RCA building is now also known as 30 Rockefeller Plaza or GE Building.

Top of the Rock - the Observation Deck

The Rockefeller Center features an observation deck atop the GE Building with panoramic views of Central Park and Empire State Building. When the former RCA building opened in 1933 it featured a roof terrace designed as the deck of an ocean liner. Ventilation pipes were shaped as a ship's chimneys and visitors could relax in deck chairs. The observation deck remained open until 1986. By then the number of visitors had dropped while costs increased. At the same time the expansion of the popular Rainbow Room restaurant on the 65th floor cut off the elevator access to the roof, leading to the deck's closure.

Fortunately the observation deck reopened again in November 2005, finally giving the nearby Empire State Building's observatory some competition. After a renovation of some 75 million dollars, the art-deco style observation deck, promoted as the 'Top of the Rock' can be visited once again; only the deck chairs have disappeared.

A separate entrance at West 50th Street leads to the elevators. In the elevator, important historic events since 1933 are projected on the elevator's transparent roof.

There are in total three levels open to the public, including the roof terrace. The first is on the 67th floor and is completely covered. The observation deck on the 69th floor has glass windshields while the 70th floor is completely open to the elements, offering visitors a fabulous 360 degree view.

Radio City

By 1940 Radio City, which became known as Rockefeller Center consisted of 14 buildings, located around a central sunken plaza, the Lower Plaza. The plaza, best known for its very popular skating rink, is connected to Fifth Avenue via a pedestrian street decorated with statues and flowers. It is known as the Channel Gardens, as it is flanked by the British Empire Building and La Maison Française. From the Channel Gardens you have a nice view on the sculpture of Prometheus and the GE building. Another important building in the Rockefeller Center is the Radio City Music Hall. When built, it was the largest indoor theater in the world with a seating capacity of around 6000. Guided tours give you the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the spectacular Art Deco interior.

A City in the City

The Rockefeller Center, known as the 'city in the city' is an exceptional example of civic planning. All buildings share a common design style, Art Deco, and are connected to each other via an underground concourse, the Catacombs. The complex is nevertheless well integrated in the City, especially along Fifth Avenue. In 1959 and the early seventies, the Rockefeller Center was extended with 5 additional buildings along sixth Avenue.

A Gift from the People of France

The Statue of Liberty was supposed to be a gift from the people of France to commemorate America's 100th birthday in 1876. The peoples of the United States and France had come to know each other when France sent aid Statue of Libertyfor the American Revolution. The French would create and build the Statue of Liberty and the United States would fund and create the pedestal for the giant copper statue. However as with many public projects of this size, slow fundraising efforts quickly hampered Lady Liberty's construction.

354 Steps and 125 Tons of Steel

Visitors to the Statue of Liberty are strongly advised to wear comfortable shoes suitable for climbing small metal steps. Hard soled shoes might not grip onto metal steps, especially in winter. While she may be 100 years old, the Statue of Liberty is still 22-stories tall and that's a hike by anyone's standards. It's 354 steps on a spiral staircase to the top. Any visitors that aren't in good physical shape might want to skip the long lines and take an elevator ride to the pedestal and forego an attempt to hike to Lady Liberty's crown. Only 192 steps will take you to the pedestal to oversee the island and for some great photo opportunities of the Statue of Liberty looming overhead.

Lady Liberty Still an Impressive Structure

The Statue of Liberty, even in the Statue of Libertydays of skyscrapers, is still an impressive sight. From the ground to the tip of the flame, Liberty is 305 feet tall. Her index finger is eight feet long; her hands are almost 17-feet wide and the tablet she cradles in her left arm, with the inscription of "July 4, 1776" in Roman letters, is two-feet thick and 23-feet long. Not widely known, the seven rays of the Statue of Liberty's crown symbolically represent the seven continents and seven seas of the globe. Climbing to the flame in Liberty's right hand was discontinued many years ago. It's best to go to the Statue of Liberty as early in the day as possible. During the summer months, heat will build up making the wait in line for the statue that much more unpleasant. The climb up the statue might be stopped a few hours before the 5:45 p.m. closing time when it's busy.

The Sculptor and Engineer

France commissioned sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi to created the design for the Statue of Liberty with the idea of having the statue in place in America for the Centennial year of 1876. Realizing he would need the advice of an engineer, Bartholdi sought the help of Eiffel Tower designer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. Bartholdi would create the Statue and Eiffel would build the iron framework to hold it up. The Statue of Liberty wouldn't enter New York Harbor until 1885. Once the Americans finished building the pedestal on Fort Wood, as the island was called back then, the Statue of Liberty was erected in only four months. President Grover Cleveland accepted the Statue in the name of the American people on Oct. 28, 1886, 10 years after the Centennial of the Revolution.

Statue of Liberty restored to Orginal Glory

In 1986, the Statue of Liberty was reopened after an $87 million campaign to refurbish her and add a new gold-covered flame. The original flame is inside the pedestal along with other historical exhibits about the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, where millions of immigrants entered the United States, now comprise the Statue of Liberty National Monument.

Hours of Operation and Location

To visit the Statue of Liberty, arrive at Battery Park on Manhattan Island at Castle Clinton, an old fort from the early 1800s. There is no charge to visit the Statue of Liberty, but the ferry ride is $7 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and $3 for children under 17 years old. The ferries start Liberty runs at 9:15 a.m. The park closes at 5:45 p.m. For ferry service information call 212-269-5755. Park ranger tours are offered each day and last about 45 minutes.

The farmers market in Union Square is the largest and best known of the markets that are part of Greenmarket, a program of the Council on the Environment of New York City. Today there seemed to be 40 to 50 farm stands. The market is open strictly to regional producers, and the producers themselves must be present at the market. This is quite a resource for talking to the people who actually grow our food. There are many, many farmers showing off beautiful tables of fragrant herbs, heirloom tomatoes, fruits and cut flowers. You will find poultry, eggs, sausages, as well as free-range, grass-fed beef.

When you grow weary of shopping, you may find refreshment in the form of fresh-pressed cider from New York's apple orchards. There are also artisan bakers and cheesemongers squeezed in with the fishermen. A large percentage of the fare is organic and some is biodynamic.

What a great place for people watching. It seems that every one of the city's citizens makes a trip here at one time or another. On some days you will see groups of school children touring. There are neighborhood denizens grabbing a back of veggies for dinner as well as serious cooks stocking up for the week and traipsing all over the city with their bags.

Famous as well as anonymous chefs come to furnish their restaurants. Be aware, though, that if a restaurant is large, no matter what the menu says, it is unlikely that all of a given product is provided by the market.

The last Checker cab in New York was retired on July 26, 1999.

Though used primarily in New York, Checker Cabs were made in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

It’s possible not to break the bank on a Big Apple trip

When I lived in New York four years ago, I wanted to see all the Broadway shows, tour all of the museums and visit every attraction. However, there was a problem, the same one that faces most tourists planning a trip to the Big Apple: money.

I soon discovered, though, if you know where to look, New York has its share of free and cheap attractions, events and museums. Especially if you're willing to wake up early.

Shakespeare in the Park

One of the most popular free events in New York is Shakespeare in the Park. Every summer since 1962, the Public Theater has hosted productions of Shakespeare plays at Central Park's Delacorte Theater.

Famous actors and actresses ranging from Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep to Morgan Freeman and Christopher Walken have performed plays under the night sky. Since this is a popular and free event, tickets can be hard to come by. Bryant Park's HBO Summer Film Festival

Every Monday from June through August, Bryant Park, located behind the New York Public Library, hosts a series of free movies sponsored by HBO.

On a large screen, the park shows classic movies including "The Wizard of Oz," "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "To Sir with Love." The show begins at sunset; usually between 8 and 9 p.m. But access to the grass begins at 5 p.m., so arrive early for a choice spot. Bring a blanket, food and wine to make it a special night out.

Opera in the parks

If a full-price ticket to the opera is not in your budget, consider attending one of the free performances given by the Metropolitan Opera.

Every summer, the prestigious Met performers leave their comfortable digs at Lincoln Center and embark on a tour of outdoor venues in each of New York's five boroughs and a few parks in New Jersey. The tour introduces the award-winning opera to residents and tourists. Past performances have included "La Traviata," "The Magic Flute" and "Rigoletto."

Tickets are not required, just show up, snatch a piece of grass near the bandstand and enjoy. Like all of the mentioned events, it's best to arrive early and pack a picnic. Don't forget the citronella candles, which serve double duty - to keep the bugs away and add a little ambiance.

Morning talk shows concerts

What do the "Today Show," "Good Morning America" and the "Early Show" have in common? Yes, they're morning talk shows, but they also host free, live concerts during the summer from performers that have included Mark Anthony, Maroon 5, John Legend and Big and Rich.

The catch? Because the concerts - usually on Fridays - are for morning shows, they begin early in the morning, usually before 8 a.m. The artists normally perform three to four songs. If you want an unobstructed view close to the action, arrive before dusk. Don't forget a pair of comfortable shoes and a camera.

New York museums

There are hundreds of museums in New York, and a day of museum-hopping would likely blow a budget. However, most of the museums - including the popular ones - offer either suggested or free admission on certain days.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers a $20 suggested admission, which means they would prefer you paid 20 bucks, but will accept any amount of money. On Fridays, both the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art have free admission from 4 to 8 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. respectively.

Also, for a break from the long lines found at the crowded museums, visit a few of the lesser-known ones, including the Fashion Institute of Technology Museum, Sony Wonder Technology Lab, National Museum of the American Indian and Forbes Magazine Galleries, all of which boast free admission.

Central Park in New York City is a great attraction for visitors hoping to enjoy the city without spending much money. One of the most popular free events in New York is Shakespeare in the Park. Every summer since 1962, the Public Theater has hosted productions of Shakespeare plays at Central Park’s Delacorte Theater.

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. The bridge stretches 5,989 feet over the East River, connecting the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Located on 12-acre Liberty Island in New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty was a gift of international friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is one of the most universal symbols of political freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886 and was designated a National Monument on October 15, 1924. The Statue was extensively restored in time for her spectacular centennial on July 4, 1986.
