May is Minnesota Museums Month!

The inaugural Minnesota Museums Month is being held in May. Museums of all types throughout the state will be participating with special events and exhibits. Art, historical, science, nature, and zoos are among the variety of over 600 museums in the state. The library display case is featuring books highlighting the mixture of topics of the museums. Native American art, historic sites, and Minnesota artists are included in the selected books. Celebrate Minnesota Museums Month!

It's that time of year when the thoughts of college students turn to entering the job market. The library has several resources that can help.

On the main library web page, you can find a link to our Job Hunting Resources. Find guides to resumes, cover letters, and interviewing, along with much more from our collection and through our links.

If you want to find potential employers in your field, try Reference USA. Search US Businesses or US Healthcare for information on a particular company. Or use the custom search, then choose Geography and Business Type to find certain types of business within a radius of your home address.

Adventures of Sheldon

The Library recently added a copy of The Adventures of Sheldon, a newly published children's picture book. Author Brianna Harelson first created the Sheldon character as a clay animation for a video project in the Visual Communications Technology program at Century. Sheldon was such a hit as a claymation character, that when Harelson and fellow Alum Michael Berglund needed another project idea, they decided to use the colorful indigo blue Sheldon to develop their own children's storybook and audio track. Harelson wrote the story while Berglund sketched and designed all the illustrations. Downloadable Audiobooks

Listen to a book while you enjoy the spring weather! The Library has purchased new downloadable audiobooks through Audiobooks from EBSCO. We have a variety of classics, science fiction, and popular titles. You can use the free Download Manager program to download these to your computer or iPod or MP3 player. EBSCO provides complete directions on how to do this.

You can find Audiobooks from EBSCO from the library home page by going to the middle tab, Articles, Databases & More, and choosing our Databases A-Z list. The titles are also listed in our catalog.

Spring Break Library Hours

Beware the Ides of March!

In association with the “Ides of March”, the library display case is highlighting books on murder, mystery, power, and betrayal! Check out the selections from your favorite mystery writers featuring Tom Clancy, Michael Connelly, James Patterson, Patricia Cornwell and more.

Historically the Ides of March fall on March 15 which marks the assassination of Julius Caesar after a soothsayer's warning. In modern times, the Ides of March has taken on sinister implications of menace and doom because the date has been imbued with a sense of foreboding.

Cozy up with a good mystery for the chilly month of March!

Pearl Harbor Survivor Signs Book About USS Ward

Donald Pepin is a Pearl Harbor survivor from the USS Ward, which fired the first American shots of WWII. A crew of 140 was aboard the destroyer USS Ward on December 7, 1941. Among them were 84 Minnesotans, including many from St. Paul. Mr. Pepin served on the ship until it sank in the Philippines on Dec. 7, 1944. The entire crew survived.

Mr. Pepin signed the library's copy of USS Ward Fires First Shot WWII, which contains narrations of the campaigns of the USS Ward. The book includes photos of the war in the Pacific, the crew of theUSS Ward, and diagrams of the ship. The book will soon be available for the Century community in our general collection. It was an honor to meet Mr. Pepin and to have him here in the library.

CSI Century!

Fan of CSI? Interested in forensics? The library display case for January is featuring a variety of books on the fascinating subject of forensics. Forensic science involves providing evidence to help solve crime using scientific means like criminalistics, toxicology, odontology and psychopathy. Books are available that discuss DNA testing, fingerprint analysis, crime scene photography and technological advances in forensic science and the impact testing has had on the justice system. Forensics is more than blood and gore-several titles on computer, digital, and anthropological forensics are also showcased.
