Building relationships is an important key to growing a business. When you market online, it&#8217;s harder to build the same type of relationships with people as you do when marketing at in-person events. You lose that personal touch that comes from meeting people in person. When you meet someone in person, you can touch them [...]<br/>

One of the things that I learned the hard way is that you can&#8217;t grow a business alone. Honestly, you won&#8217;t get any clients, if people don&#8217;t know you exist. Before I was a marketing coach, I was an independent application developer. Fancy words, I know. In other words, I had my own business, and [...]<br/>

It&#8217;s absolutely essential, if you intend to take your business past a certain level. However, just because you are told to do this, and even if you do understand the full power of choosing a narrow niche yourself, [...]<br/>

<itunes:summary>Prefer to listen to this post or download it to your mp3 player?

Last summer from around May-November we had a couple woodpeckers literally destroying our house. If you come to visit, you can’t help but notice all the holes they made in the shingles. There must be 50 shingles that need to be replaced. I started counting one day, but lost track of where I was.
I used to think these little guys were quite cute until I realized how incredibly persistent they are. These persistent, little things would spend hours, I mean hours, pecking away at our house. We would run outside and scream to scare them away only to have them come back again and again.

They were determined to get what they wanted. They were hungry. First, we thought they were looking for bugs, so I called a pest control company. They didn’t seem to know for sure, but thought the holes resembled a mating pattern for these birds. I was told we don’t have any bugs. The company wouldn’t even spray for bugs.

They also told us that these birds are protected by the government because they are migratory. Gosh, if I knew I could be protected, I would have migrated myself a long time ago.

Anyway, these birds were pretty darn hungry. Whether it was for bugs or for a new mate, they weren’t stopping until they got what they wanted.

Let me repeat that because it’s SO important…They weren’t stopping until they got what they wanted. If your business isn’t as successful as you want YET, then you will want to repeat that sentence a third time.

That’s what I want you to do when you are marketing your business. Don’t stop until you get the business you are looking for. Most businesses are not successful overnight, it takes consistency and persistency. It takes coming back again and again and making new holes.

When the woodpecker didn’t find what he was looking for in one hole, he moved on and made another hole. He kept making new holes, yet he was also consistent in where he chose to make these holes. He tended to make them in certain places around the house. He knew where his target market was located, he just wasn’t 100% sure how to get in and reach it.

As a marketer for your business, you need to hone in on the location and the particular market. Discover exactly what (or who) it is you are looking for. Once you find a group of people in your market hone in and use different tactics to reach that audience. The more holes…er…I mean, tactics you use, the more you will find you are reaching your target.

Think of a time in your life when you had to work really hard to get something that you know you just had to have. How did you get it? How long did it take for it to happen? How many hoops did you have to jump through to get there? How did you feel after achieving that goal?

I’d love to hear your stories of achievement and success. Post them as a comment to the blog.

 <itunes:summary>

Prefer to listen to this post?
I’m often asked how you know if your target market is too broad. Many business owners feel that if they narrow down their target market, they will lose out on potential customers.
This can’t be any farther from the truth. What I have learned is that the narrower your niche and target market:

The easier it is to reach those people who really need your service or product,
The easier it is to give them what they need,
The easier it is to really speak to your audience in a way that gets them to say “Wow, that sounds great. I can really use that. Sign me up.”
The easier it is to become a known expert in your field.
The easier it is for people to know who to refer your way.

Did I say yet that it’s easier to run a business when you NARROW your niche and target market?

How do I know this?

I used to be a programmer with my own freelance business before I became a marketing coach. When I first started out as a consultant, I had no idea what I was doing. I barely even knew what a consultant was. I picked one thing that I really enjoyed doing and decided that was going to be my business. I took away all the things I didn’t like about my previous job and concentrated on the fun stuff.

I then decided that I was going to be very picky with who I worked with because I was starting a business so that I could be home with my son. I decided I needed to stick to projects that allowed me to work from home and didn’t require too many phone calls or meetings.

I was very specific, but I managed to run a very successful consulting business for several years until the software I was programming with started becoming obsolete. Because of this I was starting to get less clients; therefore, I decided to expand my business to all kinds of programming. I was telling people that I did many different things. Once this happened, I ended up with ZERO clients.

Did I say ZERO? Wow! I went from a full plate to zero clients all in a year just because I changed my business model. No one really knew what it was I did anymore. No one knew whom to refer to me anymore.

It was then that I realized that what I was doing before when I was so narrow was actually one of the big secrets. I read a ton of business books that helped me to make this realization. Once I narrowed down my business again to one specific type of programming, I was then able to become a new expert in my new field and once again became extremely successful.

If you want to find the same success in your business, you need to choose a target market that has each of the following 5 conditions:

A group of people that you can clearly identify that has similar needs and characteristics
A group of people that you can easily find and reach
A group of people that has a problem that they want to solve using a solution that you can provide
A group of people that can afford and is willing to spend the money to solve that problem
A group that is large enough to bring in the income that you want from your business

When you are deciding on a target market, make sure that your chosen market has all of these 5 conditions. If you are missing even just one element, your business may not succeed.

<itunes:summary>I hate selling! Ok, hate is a really strong word. I dislike selling. I really don’t like when someone blatantly sells something to me. I find it annoying and rude. I know that people are out there trying to run a business. I get that. I have been running businesses myself for over 15 years. Sometimes it’s tough to get the clients you need.
The trick I have learned is that you don’t want to sell. You want to build relationships. There are many different ways to build relationships. You can network, you can ask for referrals and word-of-mouth, you can use social media.
I want to tell you a story. A few years back I was on the Board of Directors for a local organization called Independent Computer Consultants Association. I was in charge of putting together a monthly newsletter for the group. The quality of this newsletter was so great that it won “Best Chapter Newsletter” for the best newsletter put out by that organziation from the whole country. The other members of the board recognized this quality and even mentioned in a meeting, “When someone does a great job when they are doing volunteer work, then just imagine how good they are when they are getting paid!” I got quite a few projects through referrals from that board of directors. By working with them even on a volunteer basis, they got to know me and what I had to offer. They don’t hesitate to refer me to someone in need of my services.
Watch this video to hear a story of being on the flip side of a relationship, or lack there of…

<itunes:summary>Starting a business can be broken down into steps. Over the past 15 years, I have studied entrepreneurs from different types of service businesses. I have compared those who are successful with those who are just getting by. Is there a difference between the two? You bet!
What I have learned over the years is that there are as many different ways to start a business as there are types of businesses. But knowing this doesn’t help you get your business started.
I asked myself if there was a common pattern amongst many successful entrepreneurs, and I noticed that there is a distinct pattern. I took that pattern and turned it into my 5 Step Business Success Formula.
I then asked you what you were looking for from a mentor, and you responded that you would like a step-by-step approach to getting started. You want to learn from someone who says, “do this, then do this.”
Watch this video for an overview of the 5 most important steps that every successful entrepreneur follows when they start a new business venture.

Do you want to download the audio for your mp3 player?

I’m in the process of developing a workshop that will take these 5 steps and break them down into a very defined process of starting a business. What would you need from this workshop to feel it would be worth your while? </itunes:summary>
