Washington Regional Medical System is a community-owned, locally governed, non-profit health care system in Northwest Arkansas with over 3,400 team members, a 425-bed medical center, 50+ clinic locations and five Centers of Excellence – the Washington Regional J.B. Hunt Transport Services Neuroscience Institute; Washington Regional Walker Heart Institute; Washington Regional Women and Infants Center; Washington Regional Total Joint Center; and Washington Regional Pat Walker Center for Seniors.

Washington Regional is the region’s only level II trauma center, the only hospital in Northwest Arkansas to earn certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, and one of only two hospitals in the state to earn Spine Surgery certification from The Joint Commission. Washington Regional Medical Center has earned three consecutive Leapfrog “A” grades for patient safety and was named the #1 hospital in Arkansas in 2022-23 by U.S. News & World Report.

A primary goal in the emergency department last year was to increase nursing satisfaction rates. This was achieved by improving nurse to patient ratios and providing resources to prevent workplace stress and burnout. As a result of these efforts, the ED was able to reduce the RN turnover rate by nearly half. Additional goals focused on reducing patient falls and maintaining a less than 1% left without being seen rate since 2019.

The 37-bed emergency department cares for nearly 55,000 patients annually and is honored to be the first ED in Arkansas to receive the Lantern Award.

Vail Health Hospital is a 56-bed rural, community hospital and Level III Trauma Center in Eagle County, Colorado. Our mission is elevating health across our mountain communities. We are very proud of the excellent care we provide at our 19-bed emergency department to our approximately 13,000 patients annually. Our ED has achieved the Press Ganey Guardians of Excellence Award for three years in a row for being leaders in patient experience and 36 consecutive months of patient experience scores above the 95th percentile. We are also an ANCC Pathways to Excellence designated organization. Some of our accomplishments include our shared governance model, innovative staffing plans, focus on staff wellbeing and wellness, patient call backs and exceptional staff education. Quality initiatives include reduction of door to ECG times on chest pain patients, STEMI door to balloon times, dedication to alternatives to opioids (ALTO), hand hygiene and utilization of barcode technology for specimen collection and medication administration. We also take great pride in our evidence based standardized approach to suicide prevention and falls prevention. We are honored to be selected as a first time Lantern Award recipient.

UPMC Hamot is a 458-bed tertiary care hospital in Erie, PA that serves as a regional referral hub, Level II Trauma, Comprehensive Stroke & Cardiac Center and is ANCC Magnet designated. UPMC Hamot’s mission is to serve its patients, communities, and one another in the UPMC Hamot tradition of quality, health, healing, and education.

UPMC Hamot’s Emergency Department is a 35-bed unit that provides care to 60,000 patients annually. We are proud to have achieved our third consecutive Lantern Award. One highlighted initiative in our Lantern document is the nurse, physician and leader collaboration that occurred between our ED and a children’s ED that led to us becoming a regional pediatric hub. A 23% increase in our pediatric volume demonstrates that this initiative has improved efficiency and care for chronically and acutely ill children and their families in our community who previously would have traveled two hours for comprehensive care. Our ED also excels in stroke care. The national benchmark is to administer thrombolytics within 60 minutes of arrival; we have demonstrated a 93% compliance of thrombolytic administration within 45 minutes of arrival! Additionally, our ED identified an opportunity to work with the community when we saw an increase in infant unsafe sleep deaths during the pandemic. The nursing staff collaborated with several community organizations and offices to increase awareness, education and resources to families and caregivers of newborns which resulted in a 72% decrease in unsafe sleep deaths last year.

The 22-bed ED features fastER, a fast-track service to treat minor injuries and illnesses within 90 minutes, an onsite CT scanner to minimize patient transport and all digital X-ray technology for improved diagnosis and treatment of a wide range injuries and of ailments. The Nethercutt Emergency Center is also a STEMI Receiving Center and a Primary Stroke Center.

The Emergency Department at The Mount Sinai Hospital is comprised of over 500 diverse team members across multiple disciplines caring for over 100,000 patients annually. The ENA’s Lantern Award is an indicator of the Emergency Department’s commitment to the Mount Sinai Health System value of teamwork, while prioritizing employee engagement, educational opportunities, and staff wellness.

The Emergency Department has implemented a number of operational process improvement including the ‘Provider in Triage Team’ have led to enhanced patient experience, facilitating throughput and allowing our clinicians to quickly address patients’ needs. Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento (SMCS) earned five stars, the highest ranking possible, in the CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings. Ranked among the top 50 hospitals in California, and recognized as one of the best hospitals in the Northern Sierras region published by the U.S. News and World Report. Sutter Medical Center also earned recognition as High-Performing in Spinal Fusion; Aortic Valve Surgery; Heart Bypass Surgery; Congestive Heart Failure; Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD); Heart Attack; and Hip Replacement.

The 54-bed Emergency Department (ED) receives more than 100,000 patients per year and includes a dedicated Pediatric ED with a separate family waiting room. SMCS ED has a Clinical Decision Area, Psychiatric Response Team, Sepsis Navigator Nurses, and a Substance Use Navigator. We are a Comprehensive Cardiac and Comprehensive Stroke Center and are on the Maternity Care and Opioid Honor Roll from California Hospital Compare.

Our ED nurses are active in advocacy at the state and federal level, participate in disaster drills with local Fire and EMS, and provide evidenced-based care through harm prevention processes such as medication assisted treatment. New graduate nurses are supported through transition to practice classes and a new graduate RN residency with a high rate of retention. As a non-trauma center, annual training includes simulation about trauma and other high risk patient populations which has resulted in increased confidence among the staff in their knowledge, skills, and abilities. We are proud of achieving an honor that recognizes our commitment to excellence in emergency care.

The Marc and Laura Andreessen Emergency Department at Stanford Health Care (SHC) is a 66-bed adult emergency department, a 15-bed pediatric emergency department with an 11-bed clinical decision unit. As a Level I adult and pediatric trauma center, SHC’s ED provides care for two counties and is the front door for over 47 percent of all inpatient admissions. The SHC emergency department is set to see over 100,000 patients this year! Highlights of SHC’s emergency department include staff wellness initiatives, “Quick-look” nurse implementation at triage, staff safety initiatives and staff retention. Our emergency department is honored to be a four-time Lantern Award recipient this year.
