New York, New york – so good they named it twice. That may be true, but did anyone ever take the time to build a intricate tribute to the big apple in pop-up book form? Well multi-talented visual artist Daisy Lew has.

From above, each page represents an NYC icon – from the big apple itself, to the famous yellow cab and the Statue of Liberty. When laid flat, you soon see the sprawling metropolis that we all know and love. This really is a book you just can’t put down.

I’m all for minimalist interior design, but sometimes a vast expanse of white wall can seem a little… well… vast.

So what if I said there was a piece of art which needs no frame, or even a canvas for that matter. Impossible? Well, in the keeping with the minimalist philosophy, The Binary Box have designed a series of wall stickers (yes, stickers) that can instantly liven up your bare walls – and not a nail in sight.

It may be the height of summer and your office might be hot enough to boil an egg on the scanner, but surely that’s as good a reason as any to go back in time to the frozen winter of last December?

You see, sometimes you see a clever piece of branding that really takes the breath away – and in this case, leaves it minty fresh too. Hats off to the clever folks at JWT London. When all the outdoor ad sites in the UK were under several feet of snow, this beautifully simple ambient campaign for Polo mints turned the extreme weather conditions to their advantage.

It’s that time of year again, when the nation pins its hopes on Scotland’s Andy Murray, in the hope that this year will finally see the first British Grand Slam winner since Fred Perry.

So, one would think that having the World Cup to contend with, Andy would be glad to have the attention diverted away from his quest. Well, perhaps his sponsors Head felt that anything the footballers can do, Andy can do better. I mean, who wants to see Brazilian footballers doing endless keepie-ups anyway?

Everyone knows that Macs and the design world have been in a stable and loving relationship for years now. It’s not just about looks. They tend to our every need, ever willing to pander to our slightest whim or wildest fantasy. But love’s a two way street. So isn’t it about time that designers gave something back?

Well, that’s exactly what UK design agency Hu2 thought. Specialising in decorative wall stickers, they’ve created a series of stickers especially for the beloved Mac. Isn’t it about time you showed your Mac how much you love it?

All designers dream of the ‘light bulb moment’ – that time when the elusive bright idea pops into your head unannounced. However, for too long, the lightbub has gone unthanked by designers. Until now. Step forward Helbert Ferreira and Remi Melander of System Design Studio. They’ve given the humble light bulb a lo-fi makeover. This wax candle is designed to mimic the light levels of an electric bulb whilst also protect its exterior shape. The best part, however, is that it stills screws into a standard socket. A bright idea indeed.

Every now and then a great piece of art direction catches your eye, and you stop and think “I wish I’d done that”. Advertising ‘Sounds for Silence’ for La Republica – a reinterpretation of films from the silent era by modern day musicians – this poster by Italian agencyY&R Rome is one such example. As in the silent movies, sometimes actions speak louder than words.

If you like your photography creatively quirky and beautifully lit, then look no further than Tim MacPherson. After starting his careering in editorial work for such news stand staples as GQ and Tatler, he’s since carved out a distinctive and imaginative style that has lent itelf to many a successful ad campaign, as seen in his talkaboutautism.org.uk work for Treehouse.

Here, the humour in his work comes to the fore, as does his meticulous scene setting. With work like this, I’m sure the world of advertising will continue it’s courtship of Tim for some time to come.
