We are proud to offer a brand-new layout for our blogs. It was important for us to place a renewed emphasis on the user-friendly attributes of the Corporation’s blogs for the Champlain Bridge Corridor, the Jacques Cartier Bridge and for the federal section of the Honoré Mercier Bridge. Given the planned roadwork on these major routes linking Montreal to the South Shore, we wanted to offer an easy-to-use platform to help you find the information you need to avoid traffic.

You can access our latest posts via the “Breaking News” section, in order to be informed of the upcoming work schedule. You can also consult the “Major Headlines” section to find out more about the nature of the roadwork taking place on the bridges, the season’s schedule along with photos and videos of the work that is being carried-out. Sending us your questions will always be an option, and just like before, you will still have access to live footage from our cameras. We invite you to follow us on our various social media platforms (Twitter, Youtube, Flikr, Tumblr…) in order to stay informed of the upcoming traffic hindrances and to stay up-to-date with the work that we are doing.

On a final note, I am glad to participate in the management of the Corporation’s three blogs, alongside André. Having assisted him in the writing of multiple blog posts to-date, I am pleased to now be officially part of these blogs.

Thank you for continuing to follow-us and in the hope that the information included on these platforms is useful to you.

To help you stay informed of the road work being done on and under the Champlain Bridge, we will be publishing a series of blog entries entitled “Innovate and Deal with Challenges” over the next few days. Here is the second in a series of five posts.

As morning rises this summer, hundreds of workers will not be crossing the Champlain Bridge to go to work. Rather, these workers will be headed under the bridge. While you take the bridge to get to work, these workers will be bustling about on the bridge’s pillars. Navigating between the shore and the pillars, they will transport their day’s materials on work barges installed around the pillars. Carpenters, joiners, cement workers, electricians, iron workers, semi-skilled workers, steel fitters, welders, scuba divers, heavy equipment operators, crane operators, and of course the ship’s captain—an entire team can be found beneath the bridge’s roadway.

The pillars, beams and roadway are being repaired without having to impede traffic. We rarely mention these behind-the-scenes workers, but in addition to working over water, they have a difficult work environment. Work under the bridge takes place practically 10 months of the year, and some months are more difficult than others. The wind and cold offer little respite to these workers, who are well exposed high above the middle of the river, with limited work space.

Then, as night falls on the bridge, they climb onto the traffic lanes. While traffic is reduced and the motorists who use the bridge have headed home, the workers are busy closing one or two lanes to continue the work started in the daytime. This year, the same scenario will be repeated more than 100 times at night. But time flies. All lanes must be open by 5 a.m. the next day for rush hour. Night work on the bridge must often be carried out within four or five hours, and sometimes less. Time is of the essence, and the slightest mistake could significantly impact the next day’s traffic flow. While we often remember the mistakes that result in a delay, when the bridge reopens in the morning, few realize that once again these behind-the-scenes workers have successfully finished on time.

We invite you to read our post summarizing the upcoming 2012 ROAD WORK SCHEDULE and the important dates to keep in mind for the coming year.

Important dates to keep in mind

Champlain Bridge corridor (1 or 2 lanes open/direction) – Spring Blitz

Long weekend holiday: May 19, 20 and 21

Weekend: May 26 and 27

Weekend: June 2 and 3

Let us remind you that in order to reduce the amount of traffic hindrances, significant efforts have been made to concentrate work during the spring and summer periods, mostly over weekends and during the Construction Holiday. For example, last year there were 10 major weekend closures on the Champlain Bridge corridor, while this year the Corporation plans to have three to six major work weekends, depending on weather conditions, which is essentially twice as few.

To do so, a thorough plan has been established to encourage the concentration of several worksites on the Champlain Bridge corridor over the same period. Each weekend, the Corporation will invest approximately $2.1 million (value of the work) in the Champlain Bridge corridor, which is almost twice as much as last year.

To help you stay informed of the road work being done on and under the Champlain Bridge, we will be publishing a series of blog entries entitled “Innovate and Deal with Challenges” over the next few days. Here is the first in a series of five posts.

Numerous construction projects will take place on the road network this year. While thousands of motorists try to find the best route to avoid them, hundreds of people are already at work trying to find the solutions. And thankfully so! While the fruit of their labour is not always acknowledged, they continue to try to strike the best balance. The ideal balance may not be found, and road work will still take place this year, but their work is not in vain. Turning roadmaps in every direction, they look for solutions to minimize impacts on the network. When working on a bridge, however, there are fewer alternatives. The only detours possible involve other bridges. So what can we do? We can optimize the work.

When closing a bridge, we take full advantage to carry out as much work as possible. Many contractors work on the bridge over the weekend and we increase the rhythm by working 24 hours straight, day and night. But we have to strike the right balance. If people are tripping over one another, and the work is not carried out in an efficient manner, nobody benefits. Therefore, an orchestra conductor is required to find the best framework to optimize the number of worksites on the bridge, all while ensuring the work is completed on time for Monday morning rush hour. We’re currently developing this framework, to ensure the perfect synchronization of everyone working on the bridge over the weekend. As of Monday at 5 a.m., everything must be open. There is no room for error.

The orchestra conductor has to think of everything, prepare their teams and always be ready for surprises. Once the ball gets rolling, we can’t stop it. If all goes well, the tempo will be clear and the rhythm efficient. That’s what’s required. We’re all searching for this perfect rhythm and all our efforts are invested to optimize the work carried out every weekend, in order to complete our annual work earlier. This year, that’s once again our goal, but the weather will certainly have an impact on our planning. In unison with our partners, we are facing a significant challenge. Yes, there are constraints, but there are as few as possible and above all they are clearly communicated to help you avoid hindrances and opt for more efficient routes. It’s a big concert that cannot be prevented, but if everyone gets to work, we should be able to play in harmony.

We invite you to read our post summarizing the upcoming 2012 road work schedule and the important dates to keep in mind for the coming year.
