I am sharing my broadband Internet access together with a few others in my rented place. Watching Youtube, networking and playing games on Facebook, downloading files from file sharing sites like Rapidshare, Megaupload, Hotfile, etc, and whatnots happen around the clock. If you are in my situation, Streamyx is the perfect choice, if not, the only choice – provided you get to enjoy the optimum bandwidth speed you subscribed for.

Today, I was asked if I agreed to convert the existing Streamyx line to Digi broadband. I was told that the Digi broadband package offers a download bandwidth of 7mbps and costs around RM188. A quick check on Digi’s website revealed that the package could be the Digi Extreme Plan. The 7 times increased bandwidth was very tempting and I did not mind the slight increase in cost. I have to admit that it all sounded too good to be true.

After reading the fine prints and FAQ, the “catch” was found. Q17 in the FAQ reads:

Question: What is the usage limit for these broadband packages?
Answer: The Extreme package comes with a data quota/usage limit of 20GB. Usage beyond 20GB will be free although the speed will be throttled to 128kbps.

The 20GB limit may be more than enough for some but definitely not in my place. I doubt it would last a week. If the guys do not mind “enjoying” a mere 128kbps bandwidth (which is equivalent to twice the speed of conventional dialup), I say go ahead. I am staying out.

 If you are in my situation, where you enjoy a stable Streamyx connection and speed but would need more bandwidth, check out their Super Upgrade Deals page. In short, you get to upgrade to the next package for free the first 4 months, and need only pay an extra RM5 to RM11 each month thereafter. The catch is that there is a 24 months minimum contract.

If I get to choose, I’d go for the Super Upgrade Deal promotion or at least an upgrade to a true unlimited 2mbps package for the same price. Never any mobile broadband packages if I am sharing my Internet connection with other heavy broadband users.

So, is Streamyx the only choice for a heavy broadband user? Worse, a group of heavy broadband users? Or did I miss some new broadband providers or promotions?

Weekends are the worst time as I might be in while the scorching sun is just right outside my window. If the weather is really hot, the air conditioner will completely cease to operate, blowing nothing but hot air. It can be very unpleasant when that happens.

That is why I was glad when my landlord said she had called the service man to service the air conditioners in the house. My excitement was short-lived when I was told that I have to pay the service man myself. RM40 for a normal service sounded okay to me though. However, I was then told that my unit also needed a gas recharge and the bill increased to RM60.

The air conditioner is working perfectly now. There is a new problem though — it is a little too cold in my room now. Freezing cold!

There are people who do not realize that yesterday was Malaysia Day — myself included. Although, I did have a feeling that I am forgetting an important date lately. After making sure it was not an anniversary or birthday, I did not bother about it any longer.

Then, I started reading all this birthday wishes on twitter going out to Malaysia. How could I forget something this important? Well, not life or death important but important nonetheless. Thankfully (just for the sake of not feeling such a big arse myself), I am not the only one around me who have forgotten about it.

Strange, isn’t it? Such a significant date — the day Malaysia was “formed” — yet it seems like not everyone gives a shit about it. Well, at least no way near the importance of our Independence Day on 31 August. That is if they even bother about 31/08.

I would like to describe the atmosphere as sad but I think strange is a more accurate feeling.

Personally, I find it rather amusing. I have had no problems filling up the race field in any forms since I was a kid. I would just write CINA or CHINESE, depending on the language of course.

Does it really matter if individuals are required to fill in their race information in official forms? So what if the government of the day decides to remove the “race” field from all official forms? Will 80% of those who answered the poll (together with the others who support the move) finally feel [whatever they were lacking by having to fill up their race in official forms]?

I say, leave the forms as they are.

I am neither in favor nor against retaining the race information in official forms, or any other forms for that matter. In fact, I think the issue isn’t whether race should or should not be mandatory in official forms.

That is simply because (chances are high that) Teoh Ah Kao isn’t Indian, Mutusammy A/L Supramaniam isn’t Malay and Abu Bin Ali isn’t Chinese. (NOTE: Names mentioned are imaginary figures and does not relate to anyone alive or dead.)

So, until and unless we solve the actual “problem” — provided they is one at the first place — having race as a mandatory field in official forms is a nonissue.

Should race be a required information in official forms? Why not?

Immediately, the phrase “today night” caught my attention. Today night? I seldom (almost never) come across that phrase. I had to check with Google to get a confirmation.

This English forum post pointed out that “today night” is wrong. Instead, it should have been “tonight”. Even then, the word “on” before that phrase should have been omitted.

TheStar article used “Thursday night” instead.

So, who’s to blame? MK or Bernama?

I never really understood why at first. I thought it was because of the bad reception I have in my rented room due to a weak/bad antenna. It is also troublesome to move and set up the television just for a couple of hours of use. Maybe I was just too busy with my work the past few months. I don’t know.

Bernie Ecclestone

After reading this article on Bernie Ecclestone’s attempt to justify his proposed “medals” scoring system, I realized why Formula One has become what it is today.

I never really understood his proposed “medals” scoring system. The whole idea of his system seems to only concentrate on rewarding the race winner. I understand that he is just trying to fix a problem — when a driver leading the drivers’ championship by a huge margin settling for lowers positions instead of risking and pushing for a win.

However, that attempt to change the points scoring system (AGAIN) is causing another problem to the already troubled sport. Forget the politics, the underperformed drivers, the sex scandal, and whatnots. Formula One has lost its groove the day they started changing the regulations when Ferrari dominated the grid a few years ago.

Despite the Ferrari’s race attics in several races that caused ruckus amongst the fans, the red cars are not to be blamed for this high speed downhill ride Formula One is heading to.

In my opinion, it is the constant change in the sport’s regulations that is to blame. Some of those changes might have been for the better but others, especially the change in the points scoring system has to be the worst decision ever made. I won’t go into how pathetic it feels to read them commenting on how this or that driver would have won/lost the driver’s championship if only the old/new points scoring system was retained/introduced.

According to this Wikipedia entry, the old 10-6-4-3-2-1 points scoring system (PSS) rewarding the first six finishers worked like a charm for over a decade since it was introduced in 1991. In fact, the previous PSS used for three decades (1961 to 1990) was similar except that the winner gets 9 points (a three point margin from the second placed driver instead of four). These PSS was meant to reward and push a driver to go for the win.

The current PSS (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1) was adopted to reward drivers for consistency.

And now Bernie Ecclestone wants to have a new points scoring system that reward and push a driver to go for the win.

I did not know that flip flop is contagious.

Of course, I was looking at the part of the Jaya supermarket that was still standing firm. The part of the old building that has collapsed was at the other end of it.

These are two photos of the Jaya supermarket building that I took a couple of days before it collapsed. Below is the part of the building that had collapsed and killed seven (?) workers.

According to this report, 11 families living opposite the building has been evacuated. If I had not moved out from one of those houses a year ago, I would have had to pack my bags as well.

I wonder what goes through the minds of those who have to work at the nearby fast food restaurant and bank of the still standing part of the building.
