The basic human need of food and water has been scarce for Haitians. But the global empathy shown reverses the plight of this poor nation. They are now centered to receive aid from different countries, corporations, and groups. We all want to help. But are afraid that our donations or time will be misappropriated. We need to make time for Haiti and not just send a $10 text donation. We need to open our hearts, minds, and of course our wallets on genuine help that can save lives. Let us all purge and dwell into the lost that has occurred in Haiti. They need everything except pity. Tap into our finances. Look at what we can sacrifice, not on what we can spare. Collecting our coin jars is good. But canceling or postponing some luxuries and devoting a part of our income will be more profound. Plan to give now and in the future as it will take time to rebuild and even construct a better Haiti. Aside from the financial help we can scour around our environs and source for other type of donations from clothing to even cell phones. They don’t have anything and are barely standing on there two feet which should be emphasized as most have a pair of shoes to spare and donate. Don’t let the conventional wisdom of charity restrain us from helping. Innovate our styles, such as looking in our directories including Facebook for people who have relatives in Haiti and find what they may need. Reach out directly and be involved. Helping Haiti will be an evolved process that will surely make us all proud of sharing this planet. Let us all do our share.

But the Twinkie Tax title of this article made us want to go walk down to a store and get out sweet tooth fix of the day. Our society has made it so convenient to access sugar filled snacks that promote Obesity. From small to big stores they have made sure that on the checkout counters your are tempted to pickup a snack or two. We do not see fruits or vegtables at the checkout on the grocery line. Currently as the US goverment overhauls the Health Care system the Twinkie or Junk Food Tax is proposed heavily to create revenue. The convenience of soda and sweets will be curbed down by this taxes. Manufacturers have been fighting for the last couple of months to ensure that this federal tax does not happen. At least a dozen states haves taxes already that penalize buyers of this junk food but its revenue our not always directed to the fight on Obesity. Illinois is one of the latest that slapped candy with this taxes and aims to use it to build roads which is unfortunate for our battle on Obesity. We will see this tax push through as more and more people understand that eating this Junk will lead to being overweight then to Obesity then to Death. But until we see on food labels with warnings from the Surgeon General that its consumption of such foods lead to death we will have to see more people die. Twinkie tax is needed if we expect to evolve from the way we consume foods and towards a healthier lifestyle.

Obesity will be sitting on your face if you don't do anything. Everyone from Time Magazine to the CDC, Center for Disease Control to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation have been shouting on how more than 30 percent of children in the US are overweight and 17 percent are obese. Obesity is also shortening the lives of cats and dogs as we continue to over feed are pets. The culture of excess and the proximity of unhealthy foods dominate our world today. The change that is needed will be a combined voice of the people to a healthier lifestyle. We need advocacy and action towards instilling a new tommorrow for ourselves and our children. We already look at labels at the grocery for nutritional value and we are starting to have labels on fast foods joints and restaurants where we spend more than 50 percent of our food consumption. We are lucky to have Feed America in our backyard to answer that question and when you bring in snickers to the equation then the answer becomes bar hunger. On July 14th, Snickers has actor David Arquette committed to stay in a plexiglass box above Madison Square Garden to raise money for Feed America. You can join and make donations on the facebook page . We always make sure that we have food for ourselves but if we can open our eyes and close our mouth to help feed the hungry then we can make real changes. Donations and voluntering are good ways to help. But the most important thing is to open our eyes and slowly commit to help. Doing our share for the hungry could come in different ways which could be as simple as eating a snicker bar and as elaborate as what David Arquette will be doing at the Garden. There is no general way to address hunger and the methods will continually innovate as more people become aware. Chanco Brothers our passionate to feed the hungry and it is the small steps which will cross that line of being nourished. Lets do our share.

When we are thinking of rice its cal rose that is at the top of the charts. We however had recently been reading how eating rice affects the current drought in California. We did not want to just tell my sushi chef to stop passing the rice. We care for the environment and if stopping to eat California Rice would help stop the drought or global warming then there is no argument at all. We started to look for answers and we of course ended up with more questions. Even the California Rice Commission website made it even more confusing. We did get a lot of facts and top of the list is that there is a drought and it has been happening year after year. The water reserves that California had are virtually nonexistent today. What we took notice is that rice production in California is mostly for non-residents. We import most of this rice to Asia which has a big need for rice. The picture of rice production is that it is one of the crops that need water in California. The fact is that a lot of water is needed for California's agricultural needs which do not mean that rice is the culprit. California Rice based on the Chanco Brothers assumption is an Angel to California bringing in revenue for the State. The method of flooding in growing rice in California has been working productively. It only takes 25 gallons of water per serving of rice while almonds need 80 gallons and cantaloupe takes 40. A good note as a business is that rice prices are on the rise. Due to drought worldwide prices have continued to increase. Australia which has been producing rice has stopped production due to the drought and has implemented stringent measures for water conservation. This article by Dr. Peter Gleick talks more on what has happened in Australia http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/gleick/index . While the following video interviews a farmer as he points out how much they value water as it is the main basis for growing rice in California.

Cutting it down to half seemed practical when just cruising down the corner and we needed to kick up the exercise regimen anyways. So the sight of a Harley or a Japanese Bike would be more up to stead, we ignored that image and settled on an environment friendly bicycle. There would be no fossil fuel needed to move this machine. All the horsepower would come from our left and right foots. The market selection is extremely varied. We started crossing out what we didn’t like and what seemed interesting. Being in a fairly flat area of town we didn’t need anything complex. We are getting a bike for simplicity and hopefully not make it a décor at the loft. Technology is always a good thing to consider and when we crossed on the listing for chainless bike’s our mind started to gravitate to that type. No Chains is simply an amazing concept. The word chain creates an image of being trapped. Chanco Brothers have no intention of being chained. Biking for us at this time is freedom from fuel and rules. There are no parking tickets and parking fines for bikes. A chainless bike was the way to go. A bike compared to any of the beast in the garage is quiet and only the whisper of the chain echoes. But a chainless bike is complete madness there is just but silence. So we are going to welcome to the Chanco Brothers garage a pair of chainless creatures that will help our health and our environment. A good place to checkout is an online only store called Sonoma Bikes and of course there is always craigslist.

They are both fresh out of the box and are reserved for only the big boys. Each one comes from one end of the world to other. The import from Japan is no rice rocket and the missile from Germany is definitely intercontinental. European versus Asian horsepower in the streets of Los Angeles seems like a perfect way to check the prowess of the California Highway Patrol. Since both are completely stock the Porsche Carrera GT’s 600 German breed horsepower knocks out the almost 500 high technology horsepower of the Nissan GT-R. But driving thru the 405 freeway and the Pacific Coast Highway we felt more confident pushing all 500 horsepower of the Nissan. The transmission of the GT-R was smooth and simple just like magic and the Carrera was pure business it didn’t miss a beat. The GT-R seemed wanting to get more speed goodies in the engine department to keep up with the Carrera. Chanco Brothers either do or do not recycle. We don’t fool around when it comes to recycling. It is not similar to a facebook status that says complicated, engaged, or in an open relationship. We let recycling be a part of our lives. On a recent impromptu trip to Scottsdale we forgot our toothbrushes and the hotel gift shop presented a unique and appropriate solution to recycling while traveling. Preserve Toothbrush which has a handle that is made of a 100% recycled plastic and it comes packaged in a reusable container. The tooth brush was designed simple and after using it, we promoted it to the Chanco Brothers travel kit. It will be seeing a lot of miles and then it can be recycled either by sending it back to Preserve or to a place that recycle #5 plastic. Chanco Brothers will be checking their line of razors soon as well which of course made of recycled plastic. Small things for the environment even just with a toothbrush can make a difference.

The Last Monday of June, we decided to switch up the routine to Meatless Mondays. A program from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with a simple requirement of not eating meat on Monday that means no pork, chicken, or beef in case we even try to argue. We did hear that eating green and staying away from meat keeps you free from having hangovers. We are also not doing this as rumored due to age concerns. We are doing it simply for personal health reasons which are self explanatory and for the environment. The water consumption of livestock in contrast to grains or vegetables is unbalanced. It takes more than 2,000 gallons of water per pound of beef while tofu only takes about 200 gallons of water. In terms of fossil fuel, it takes 40 calories per pound of beef while it only takes 2.2 calories for a pound of plant based protein. Hopefully the recent ranking of the US in math skills will not affect this comparison. Only in Iran can this kind of counting be taken into consideration. We need to do our share and we need to do it now. One day a week is a start, Monday always sets the tone so let’s just give it a chance to make a difference. Chanco Brothers are not turning into vegetarians but we want to eat tomorrow that’s why we are starting today. www.meatlessmondays.com

But even as far back as 1985 when together with Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones, and a long roster of certified stars in the music industry they recorded "We are the World" for the benefit of African foundations. This helped relief famine and disease victims particularly in Ethiopia. No matter what decade Michael cared and loved the world and its people. He had a heart that was for the people. We overheard people asking why he is in debt? The answer is probably why not? He has style, grace, class and elegance for all the material riches and yet he will still share to the world. A more recent video that was not released in the US. But topped the UK charts was "Earth Song". This was back in 1996 when we just started to open our eyes to the different environmental issues. The lyrics start off with what about sunrise and what about rain? Which is so timely as a lot of regions in the world including our own California is experiencing drought. This is from a man that has recently left us in body but not in spirit. A brain surgeon would surely not have a hard time finding the imprints Michael Jackson left on the world. Whether it be a dancing Michael to the tune of Beat It, a MTV Video of Thriller, or a guy in a white suit holding his crotch that vision is imprinted permanently to skulls of the millions or more likely billions of people around the world. He was the catalyst for singers and entertainers to chase dreams and capture them even in his youth. He contributed and conspired to shape the current music industry to its current levels. The word super star is only acceptable to define him in his early years, he was simply unstoppable. The universe was not made big enough for Michael Jackson. Upon her arrival people were shouting the letters GMA and all the brothers could muster was can you please spell that again? There were some protesters which any political leader in the free world would always be familiar with and should just take it liberally. We do not hate but of course we would judge as the person in question should reflect the best interest of the Filipino People. The main agenda was of course economic recovery and how she as a President was able to swing economic growth even on the current economic situation. She pointed that America is poised for an economic come back in March and stumbled the words a bit as she may have questioned the truth on the prepared speech she was reading. This she pointed guarantees the economic growth of the Philippines as both economies are directly connected. She acknowledged and complemented the help of the Filipinos in America as it contributed to 75% of the remittances to the country. No mention of the 2010 elections was said at the breakfast. But whispers around the room abounded of a Madame Prime Minister, a title that is highly questionable and debatable. Chanco Brothers are not poised to agree or disagree at the moment. Her intentions at the breakfast were clear and concise that she wants to a leave a legacy of economic growth for the country as a President. The FILUSA movement pointed that the Philippines had the biggest economic growth in the past 30 years under her Presidency which if true deserves extreme gratitude. Chanco Brothers want the best for the Philippines and hopefully she is poised to deliver that at the moment. When 2010 comes the Chanco Brothers intends to see an election for the next leader that can carry the country to even more prosperity as Filipinos we will keep doing our share in different parts of the globe. Mabuhay, Filipinos will define the coming new decade with our hearts and minds towards a better Philippines.

Just give it a couple hours with your right foot on the pedal and behold the horror of an empty tank of gas. Chanco Brothers wont deny the fact that this gas guzzler has been used often by the family. Seating on the driver seat makes you confident enough to run over cars during LA rush hours. But that is not an excuse and is completly enviroment unfriendly. Driving a Hummer is not cool, it just shows how much you dont care about our environment. Hummers are best not driven. Blood is not a sight that we are passionate about. We love clothes and cars. The thought of blood sends alarm signals to our brain. It triggers a protective barrier of something going wrong. But for millions of people around the world and in even our own neighborhoods the need for blood is urgent. Blood Banks have been in a recession longer than our financial banks. The blood supply to help the ill and dying is low. On June 14th, we celebrate World Blood Donor Day. Lets make the time to voluntarily donate blood. Chanco Brothers have noted that one unit of blood would save three lives.
