China sets $1.5 bln box office record in 2010

China's film industry had a record year in 2010, grossing 10.17 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) at the box office, but domestic movies struggled against Hollywood blockbusters, according to state media.

National box office takings rose 63.9 percent on-year as more Chinese than ever went to the movies, Tong Gang, director of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television's State Film Bureau told the China Daily on Saturday.
"Ten billion yuan is just something to feel good about, but not to show off about," Tong was quoted as saying.
"So far, it has not been possible to compete with such films as 'Avatar' and 'Inception'. Far too few domestic films are well received by the public," he added.
Combined, Hollywood's sci-fi fantasy "Avatar" and thriller "Inception" represented about a fifth of China's total box office takings while the highest-grossing domestic film, disaster epic "Aftershock", earned only 673 million yuan.
"China still lacks good films," Tong said.
Beijing officials are increasingly stressing that China needs to expand its cultural industries, which account for less than two percent of the country's gross domestic product.
China made 526 feature films in 2010 -- up 15 percent from 2009 -- making it the third-largest film producer after Bollywood and Hollywood, the China Daily said.
But critics, including "Aftershock" director Feng Xiaogang, one of the country’s most successful commercial directors, say censors at the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television often block the kind of originality needed to make great films.
"This is not an era that can produce masters," Feng told Sina.com in an interview last year.
China currently limits the number of foreign films screened in cinemas to 20 a year but in March it is due to address the World Trade Organization's call for it to open up its film market.
Tong declined to comment on what impact that ruling could have on the domestic film industry, the report said.

Mother of teen "sex addict" sues "Tyra" show

The mother of a 15-year-old self-proclaimed "sex addict" is suing Warner Bros. Entertainment, Tyra Banks and executive producers of her talk show for $3 million for featuring her child on television without consent.

Beverly McClendon, a resident of Georgia, filed the complaint in an Atlanta federal court last week, after her daughter seemingly went behind her back and flew to New York to appear on "Tyra." The lawsuit opens up questions about the care of duty owed when producers of a TV program invite minors on air to speak about their sexual proclivity.

According to the complaint, in October 2009 the "Tyra" show put out an open call on its website for "sex addicts." The call allegedly was answered by Jewel Ciera Washington, 15, who claimed to be a sex addict. Show producers allegedly reached Washington on her cell phone and invited her to appear as a guest.

In November, Washington is said to have flown unaccompanied to New York, was picked up in a limousine and put up in a hotel. Later, she claims, she appeared on the show, which was promoted as featuring a "15-year-old sex addict." She says she was also paid for her appearance.

McClendon, who says she is the biological mother and legal guardian of Washington, didn't like this one bit.

"This show was undoubtedly watched by sexual deviants, perverts and pedophiles alike," argues the complaint.

McClendon has various legal theories on why the behavior of producers was inappropriate.

For one, she says that in order to employ her child, producers needed to obtain written consent of the Commissioner of Labor in Georgia. Second, producers allegedly had a legal duty to obtain parental consent in order to fly her to New York, lodge her alone in a hotel room, and have her appear on television. And finally, producers could get around Washington's right to privacy only by gaining permission from her guardian. Allegedly, they didn't do so.

McClendon claims producers were negligent in not having the proper paperwork. She's asking for an injunction against further distribution of her child's TV appearance, as well as compensatory damages of $1 million and punitive damages of $2 million.

Box Office Preview: 'Jackass 3D' to be 3-peat hit

Johnny Knoxville and company are set to make a complete jackass out of the box office this weekend as Paramount's "Jackass 3D" looks to add another No. 1 debut to the franchise's perfect track record.

Derived from the outrageous MTV show, the first film was a surprise hit in 2002 when it opened on top in late October with $22.8 million. The second movie was an even bigger hit when it debuted in late September of 2006 with a winning $29 million.

Now, it looks like these jackasses will again have the last laugh all the way to the bank, but this time they're boosted by the novelty of 3-D, which is likely to provide an opening take of between $30 million to $35 million.

Summit Entertainment's "Red" takes a page out of "The Expendables" playbook with an all-star ensemble cast, action galore and enough comedic elements to give the film broad-based appeal.

Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Helen Mirren and Richard Dreyfus round out a very diverse, though somewhat unconventional cast for this type of action film. A gross of around $20 million should land the film in second place for the weekend.

Sony's "The Social Network" continues its terrific run, hitting the $50 million mark on Wednesday after just 13 days of release as it continues to generate strong word-of-mouth, draw critical accolades and even awards season buzz.

A low 30 percent drop going into its third weekend will give the film another $10 million and a total to date of over $60 million.

The second weekend of both Warner Bros.' romantic comedy "Life as We Know It" and Disney's inspirational true life horse racing drama "Secretariat" will put them in a dead heat for the fourth and fifth positions in the weekend derby with grosses in the $7 million to $8 million range.
