A recent international survey of more than 13,000 shoppers challenges that idea. The study suggests that chronic under-spending is far more widespread than originally thought. In fact, the study reveals that tightwads outnumber spendthrifts by a 3 to 2 ratio.

The study revealed that savers save, not because they care more about the future than spenders, but because forking out the money is too painful of an emotional experience.

Therefore, those who experience the pain of spending money more intensely tend to spend less than they would ideally like to spend. On the other end of the 'Spender-Saver' scale, spenders typically experience minimal pain when spending money and tend to spend more than they would ideally like to spend.

"Spending differences between tightwads and spendthrifts are greatest in situations that amplify the pain of paying and smallest in situations that diminish the pain of paying," the researchers explain. "The evidence suggests that frugality is driven by a pleasure of saving, as compared with tightwaddism, which is driven by a pain of paying."

The researchers also found these differences between savers and spenders:

Females are no more likely to be savers than spenders, but males are nearly three times more likely to be savers than spenders.

Respondents under the age of 30 were only slightly more likely to be savers than spenders, but respondents over 70 were five times more likely to be savers than spenders.

Whether one is a spenders or a savers also predicts a wide range of spending behavior, the researchers found. spenders are no more likely than savers to use credit cards, but spenders who use credit cards are three times more likely to carry debt than savers who use credit cards.

Annual income differs little between savers and spenders, suggesting that the observed differences in debt are largely driven by differences in spending habits.

The prevalence of savers needed be discouraging to sales people. The researchers also found that savers are most sensitive to marketing designed to reduce the pain of paying. In one experiment, participants were asked whether they would be willing to pay $5 to have DVDs shipped overnight. The cost was either framed as a "$5 fee" or a "small $5 fee." spenders were completely insensitive to the manipulation, but savers were 20 percent more likely to pay the fee when it was less painfully presented as "small."

According to the researchers, "The research provides a new perspective on spending and saving money. Whereas traditional economic theory assumes that the propensity to spend or save is largely determined by the degree to which one cares about the future, this research suggests that spending and saving are driven, at least in part, by more immediate emotional concerns,"

Journal reference: Scott I. I highly recommend Toastmaster for anyone who makes a living communicating. The club I belong to was originally a book club, that later became a Toastmasters Club. As a part of Toastmaster-Book Club we are currently reading Michael Port's book Book Yourself Solid . It's a highly recommended selection of mine.

Michael provides great resources to accompany the book, such as a free downloadable workbook. One exercise is to focus on the question, "who is your target market?" (which is different than a niche).

That question certainly applies to my hypnosis practice. What about this blog? Who is my target market, What if you (reading this now) are not part of my target marketing? Won't I lose readers.

Yes. I certainly will. And yet, at the same time, I will be able to serve my target audience better. And that is the key, to serve the best, rather than to serve the most.

So who is my target audience?

I'll let you know as I come to my own conclusions. (Even if you're not part, you are still welcome.)

US Karate Champion Uses Hypnosis

Here's a link to the story:

http://www.antonnews.com/portwashingtonnews/2008/09/05/news/karate.html

Hypnosis is an effective tool for enhancing performance; this is just one example

“Programming your Subconscious for Success” is a Lie

The idea of programming your subconscious for success is a lie. If you have a goal of success (however you define it) you’re stuck. You are already at the level of success that your subconscious allows you be. It doesn’t matter that you have the conscious desire, intent, and even resolve to be more successful. If your subconscious and conscious are not in agreement the subconscious always wins out. If you think that’s disheartening keep reading for even worse news. (But finish reading until the end where there is some good news.)

At this point, a lot of people might think, “Why would my subconscious not allow me to be more successful?” They might have used affirmations and positive thinking to “reprogram” their self conscious for success. They’ve done every thing the experts have said is necessary for reprogramming the subconscious. Why hasn’t their subconscious been reprogrammed yet?

The fact is, your subconscious has little concern for your success. Success and accomplishment are functions of the conscious mind. The subconscious has more important matters to attend to.

Your subconscious mind is concerned with survival, and maintaining the status quo, and it has a very rigid logic, and a narrow sense of time. Consider this: Your unconscious processes thousands of physiological and psychological interactions and responses each day. The notion that the unconscious is unlimited in its resources is appealing, but wrong. The unconscious is vast, but even it has limitations. It is busy enough; it barely has any concern for the future (goals), and it’s not concerned with your success.

Is this to say you are stuck being where you are? Obviously not, since people do achieve success, but your subconscious is concerned with now. You can’t fight it, so take advantage of it. Make success the status quo. Here are two way to do that.

One, take deliberate action, and repeat it over and over again until it becomes habit. Your subconscious is the realm of habits. Ultimately it is action that leads to success. If you repeatedly do the actions that lead to success, regardless of how you feel, they will eventually become habit. Those actions become the status quo.

Two, recognize and appreciate every success, no matter how small, in your life now. Express gratitude for what you have, what you do, and what you are now. Recognize every way success is yours already. In other words, drop “success” as a goal. Make it your current reality.

The idea of programming your subconscious sounds appealing, but recognize it is a figure of speech. The subconscious is vast, but has it’s limitations. Success is an ineffective goal, but a great present reality. Once you recognize them, you can work within the limitations of your subconscious , and use them to your advantage.

Hypnosis for Sales Success-What is Hypnosis

Since I've been writing about Hypnosis for Sales success I recieved an email from a sales person asking some very basic questions about hypnosis, and I realized it's been a very long time since I posted a general explanation of hypnosis so here's my brief explanation.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis helps people succeed. Whether a person’s goal is to eliminate a unwanted habit of thought emotion or behavior, overcome a painful or limiting condition or to achieve a higher level of performance in sport, academics, business or personal life hypnosis can help them to succeed. And yet it very misunderstood. Even people who otherwise recognize the value of investing in oneself, wouldn’t think off consulting with a hypnotherapist. They might even fear the idea. Even though hypnosis has been used by medical and helping professionals for hundreds of years, its use by entertainers and other non-clinical people has resulted in numerous misconceptions.

Simply stated, hypnosis is a form of communication. Essentially, it is a communication of ideas and understandings to an individual in such a fashion that they will be most receptive to the presented ideas and that by those ideas—or suggestions, gain control of their psychological and physiological responses and behavior.

The phenomena most often associated with hypnosis is trance. While movies and television have portrayed trance as something scary or sinister, trance is a naturally occurring state of altered focus and awareness, that we all go in and out of numerous times each day.

There a number of types of trance. Many of are familiar with what has erroneously been called highway hypnosis, a mental state in which the person can drive a car great distances, with no recollection of having consciously done so. In this state the driver's conscious mind is focused elsewhere, while unconsciously processing the masses of information needed to drive safely. This is a form of trance. Other common forms of trance are workers performing simple and repetitive tasks, daydreaming, and being deeply involved in a movie or book.

Hypnosis is not trance, rather it uses trance. In Hypnosis a person focuses his or her awareness on the communication with the hypnotist. It is not as many people believe a state of unconsciousness. Most people in hypnosis are aware of everything the hypnotist says, although it’s not unusual if you drift in and out of awareness, or even lose track altogether, for a few moments, but for the most part you will hear and be aware of everything that happens during hypnosis.

Also, contrary to popular belief, the hypnotized person is not under the control of the hypnotist. The hypnotized person always has the choice whether or not to follow the instructions of the hypnotist. You cannot be compelled to do something or reveal secret against your will. In fact you can end the hypnosis at anytime, so there’s no such thing as getting stuck in hypnosis. The important factor is that the person seeking hypnosis and the person guiding the hypnosis are in agreement on the desired results of the hypnosis session.

The degree to which a person can be hypnotized is not a matter of intelligence, although generally speaking a person with higher than average intelligence generally responds better. And it not a matter of being strong willed. In fact, those who are mentally disciplined tend to have the best results. What matters most is simply, are you able and are you willing to follow the instructions of the hypnotist.

The first set of instructions given by a hypnotist are designed induce a state of focused awareness that allows direct communication with the unconscious mind. The term unconscious mind is of course really a figure of speech, we only have one body-mind, but some of it’s processes are conscious and some are unconscious. “The conscious mind” refers what ever thoughts, memories or sensations you are currently aware of., and processes such as recalled memory, intentions, and values. If I ask you, “What did you have for dinner last night?”, until I asked that memory was unconscious, when you recall it, it becomes conscious. If I ask what are your intentions or what do you values you answer consciously. Throughout your day, your intentions and values drift in and out of your conscious awareness, and what often happens is automatic unconscious habits of thinking, emotions and behavior take over even if they are contrary to your conscious intentions and values.

Also, while most physiological processes are generally unconscious, there are some we can consciously control when we choose. Breathing for example, for the most part occurs unconsciously, but we can consciously alter the rate or depth of our breathing if we choose. Other physiological processes respond to conscious control as well.

Direct communication with the unconscious has two primary benefits. The first is that it allows one to make desired changes more easily and more effortlessly. As alluded to previously conscious intents and values are often not in alignment with unconscious habits of thought emotion and behavior. We might have the conscious desire, intention, and resolve to stop a harmful, unhealthy or unwanted behavior, or one establish a new positive habit but unconscious habits easily override conscious decisions. You can with time and conscious effort overcome unconscious habits of thought, emotion and behavior, but hypnosis is a means of accelerating the process. In other words, hypnosis is a tool for goal achievement, and habit change.

The second benefit is that hypnosis allows you to have a greater degree of control over some physiological processes, that are generally not under conscious control. Many of the medical uses of hypnosis take advantage of this benefit. For example, pain, pain is the result of multiple biochemical and neurological processes. Hypnosis in many cases allows a person to modify the pain experience, thereby reducing the need for pain medications, in some cases eliminating the need altogether. Other physiological process respond to hypnosis as well.

In summary hypnosis is a form of communication. The most important factor in its success is you, and your ability and willingness to follow instructions. Out there, everybody is as good as the next person. It's not a physical thing anymore. The difference between the best and the rest is the mental game."

The article continues:

"Shooters must control their emotions yet still maintain their intensity and concentration."

Is there any sport where this is not applicable?

And now expand that idea beyond sports. Academics, business, sales. In each of these areas top performance requires a combination of relaxed focus, and concentrated efforts.

I started a series on hypnosis for top sales performance last week and made the point that mindset is a critical element for sales success. I've made a free hypnosis audio file to help you develop the Sales Success Mindset available for download on my website ChangeDynamics.net. Although I did not make the direct association between sales and athletics then, let me do so now:

Sales is a competition.

Sale is a competition, not with the customer, but with one's self. You will find the same is true in sports, that the top performers' biggest competitor is themselves. The competition is to beat one's own best, and to achieve one's own targets. (Your target in sales is a satified customer.)

One element of the sale success mindset is the belief and absolute confidence that you will make the sale. I've read that Tiger Woods approaches every shot with the belief and confidence that he will make it. He obviously doesn't, but that mindset (backed up by years of practice) allows him to perform at a top level. A belief that you will make the sale, backed up by a firm knowledge of the sales process, and sales strategies and techniques will allow you to perform at top level.

Also on my website this weekend I posted a download for athletes, on Body Awareness and Mental focus.

If you're in sales, give it a try as well. Where it talks about the "field of play", think "sales situation. I think you'll find much that is applicable. Let me know what you think.

To download for the audios mentioned above visit http://www.changedynamics.net/ and sign up for free access.

Hypnosis for Sales Success

The audio Sales Success Mindset is available for free download at www.changedynamics.net. In other words, a person’s mindset is the most dominant factor in their success. If you don’t like where you are in life, change the way you think! Hypnosis is a tool for doing this.

Hypnosis is a tool for developing new habits of thought, emotion and behavior. Sales success requires both competence (a knowledge of sales skills/techniques) and confidence (a success mindset). Each of these is necessary. If you don’t know sales skills/techniques you might, with the right success mindset, do okay, but you will not achieve sale excellence. A knowledge of sale skills/techniques without the proper mindset, will likewise, yield only mediocre results. Each reinforces the other.

Hypnosis accelerates the development of the sales success mindset. The success mindset goes beyond positive thinking (although positive thinking—if it is well informed is important. It is grounded in reality. Even the beginning sales person can have confidence, if part of that confidence is an awareness of shortcomings and a commitment to develop professionally as a sales person to overcome those shortcomings.

You can download a free hypnosis audio to help develop the sale success mindset. I'll have it up by this weekend. Visit www.ChangeDynamics.net and sign up to access the free downloads section.

Contrary to what many people believe, hypnosis is not about tricking people into doing something against their will. It’s about opening one to communication with the unconscious. Knowing before behind what will be said during a hypnosis session reinforces it. For this reason, below is a transcription of the hypnosis session (not including induction --beginning instructions-- and ending instructions). Also the recording may repeat certain phrases for emphasis. The hypnosis session does not cover every aspect of the sales success mindset, and is rather generic. Nevertheless, as you listen, I am confident that regardless of whatever your level of experience as a sales person, you will benefit.

Note: If while reading the transcript you think, “This is just a positive thinking piece about sales,” you’re right, at least partially. There is little unique about the suggestions given in hypnosis. What matters most is the manner in which they are delivered. Be sure to listen to About Hypnosis to understand the power of hypnosis.

Session Transcript:

As you focus on these words, with each statement you repeat it within your mind and personalize it. Your conscious mind may drift in or out of awareness, but your unconscious mind can continue to repeat and accept each suggestion. So as I say You are allowing these suggestions to become fixed within your mind by repeating them”, you will repeat consciously or unconsciously, within your own mind. I am allowing these suggestion to become fixed within my mind by repeating them.” You will continue to repeat every word until you hear this chime...

You are a sales person, you are the person who brings solutions in the forms of products and services to those who otherwise might do without, or who might choose an inferior solution.

You believe in sales because, you know the truth about sales. People need, rely on and deep down want a skilled and knowledgeable person to present, and explain the benefits of a product or service that solves their problems and fills their desires. You are the one to do this.

You believe in sales, because, you know that selling is the most important function within any organization, without you, there is no revenue, and without revenue, no organization can survive.

You believe in sales, because in sales you control your own destiny. You are in control of your earnings. You have the flexibility to control your time, your income, and ultimately your success.

You believe in yourself, because you accept this responsibility: you alone are responsible for your own success or failure.

You believe in your self, because you are knowledgeable. You know the benefits of what you sell. You believe in what you sell. You know that from the perspective of the customer, it solves your customer’s problem or fills their desire. A satisfied customer is always your goal.

You believe in your self, because you are knowledgeable. You take time to understand the wants and needs of your customer.

When you call on someone, you open a conversation that focuses on a specific problem that your product or service solves.

In your sales conversation your goal is to discover whether what you sell and your potential client are a good fit.

You believe in yourself. You know you CAN sell and, if you don’t give up, you WILL accomplish your sales goals.

You accept that there will be ups and downs on the way, but you persist.. You make the investment in yourself to learn new sale techniques and to develop personally and professionally for sale excellence.

Even though you can sell, you know that not everyone is willing to take action to solve their problem or fill their desire. You are ready to answer the concerns of your customers You persist, and if in the end people refuse to buy from you, you take that as a gift. It is an opportunity to ask “Why?”. And no matter the response you get back from the customer, you learn from it. And that makes each next sale easier.

Whenever you hear “no” you say next. You stay focused , because you have the solution. You have what the customer needs or wants.

You can sell. You persist. Sale success is yours.

You accept these suggestion because you they are for you best and highest good, You will take them with you because they are yours. Your intents, you planning and your actions as a sales person flow from this mindset. You are a sales professional. That’s why you take the time to reinforce these by your actions, and by this time now as you sit or lie comfortably. Listening to these words, that will grow stronger and stronger within when in a few moments you will return to a fully awake and energetic state. Feeling good, feeling wonderful. Be aware again of your breathing, the air filling your lungs, filling you with energy, and on the the count of three opening your eyes, One, two three….

Hypnosis for Sales Excellence

Can Hypnosis help improve sales?

Definitely, yes, In more ways than one. Over the next several articles I'll explore ways that hypnosis can help a sales person sell more.

There are two primary ways that hypnosis can help sales: I'll look at both:

1) Hypnosis can help a sale person develop habits of thinking, emotion and behavior that empowers him or her to perform at a higher level.

2) Many of the principles of hypnosis can be applied to the sales situation. Hypnosis is a form of communication. Sales is a form of communication. Sales professionals can learn a number of hypnotic communication techniques that enhance rapport, and acceptance of a sales message.

The Truth About Weight Loss Surgery

The Truth About Weight Loss Surgery

Posted using ShareThis

Hypnosis for Surgical Pain

One year ago the Journal of the National Cancer Institue reported that the use of hypnosis prior to breast cancer surgery reduced the amount of anesthesia administered during the operation, the level of pain reported afterwards, and the time and cost of the procedure. The hypnosis session was 16 minute long and the average savings was $773 per procedure.

Here's my thoughts. The research shows the benefits of pre-surgery hypnosis in terms of patient comfort and recovery, and costs. There's no reason to believe that the results of this study applies only to breast surgery. To the contrary one would expect these same results with all surgeries.

In the USA alone, over 53 million patients undergo surgical procedures each year. 20-30 million of those are with general anesthesia. Despite most patients receiving pain medication, 50-75% of patients report that they experience inadequate pain control. Pain is the most commonly reported reason for readmission to hospital within 30 days of discharge or for admission directly after surgery.

How much pain could patients be spared, and how many dollars would be saved if presurgery hypnosis was standard practice?

Why do so few insurance companies pay for hypnosis pre-surgery?

Why do so few doctors recommend it pre-surgery?

Why do so few patients request it?

Sources:

Journal of the National Cancer Institute (2007, August 30). Researchers at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) and colleagues have demonstrated a link between a predisposition to obesity and defective dopamine signaling in the mesolimbic system in rats..." Read Story

In an article entitled Obesity Predisposition Traced To The Brain's Reward System the connection between neurotransmitters, specifically dopamine, and overeating was discussed. It appears that as important as it is to pay attention to the balance between calorie intake and calorie expenditure, it is as important to pay attention to the balance between pain and pleasure.

The article suggests a genetic predisposition to lower than normal dopamine levels and the tendency to over eat. In otherwords if you're overweight it's not your fault, it's a defective gene.

If this is the case, why in the last four decades has the obesity rate grown from less than 40% to over 60%? Gentics can only provide a piece of the answer. If the majority have the gene that leads to over eating, aren't those who don't over eat the ones with an abnormal gene?

Genetics are a factor, no doubt, but is still gets back to how a person lives. As other research has shown there is always a certain of plasticity of genes. Genetics is propensity, not destiny. For many it is easier, but no one is destined to be fat.

The conclusion of the article is something we have known for a long time: "We eat not only for nourishment, but also for pleasure."

You can't change your genes (yet). You can change the rewards and pleasures in your life.

How? Of course I'll mention hypnosis as one way, but there are many others.

Hypnosis for Weight Loss: Cut your appetite in half

Here's a video posted on July 29th, 2008 in Weight Loss Motivation, Weight Loss Tips, Weight Loss Strategies, Awareness, Thin Mindset Which would you prefer individualized consultation with a professional hypnotherapist, or a well prepared hypnosis audio that you could use in the privacy of your home?

And even before you consider that, why would you consider hypnosis at all?

The next series of entries will on this question.

So here is #1

Freedom to choose yourself

Why do so many feel they are not free to be them selves? Why do so many feel inhibited by fear, habit, convention, other?

Why are so many double minded? Uncertain of what they truly want? Or sabotaging their own desires and goals?

Most of the reasons are unconscious. We have patterns of thought, emotion and behavior that keep us from experiencing true success, well-being, wealth, health, relationship-- in otherwords happiness-- that are unconscious, and seemingly just "who we are".

This is not to say that hypnosis is a way of discovering your true self. Who you are is your true self. There is no other self. The influence of inborn temperment can not be ignored, but the primary determinants of "who we are" are largely circumstantial. We are shaped primarily by the circumstances we are born into. Who we are is largely the imprint of our history.

That is until we commit to doing something about it. The decision to create your own best self is the beginning of an exciting, sometimes ardous, mostly rewarding journey. It's a commitment to ongoing personal growth.

There are many tools available to one with the courage to take on this challenge. Hypnosis is one. It is one of the most powerful and effective tools. It is both restorative-- beneficial for overcoming limiting thoughts, emotions and behaviors, and generative-- beneficial for achieving higher levels of achievement and performance.

It up to you to choose where you go with your self. Hypnosis is a means of getting there more easily, quicker, and in the long run less costly.

WARNING: This is not to say "be who ever you want to be (or what best serves your purposes)" as is practiced on online dating sites, forums, by con men etc. It not about being fake, rather it is choosing the qualities and habits that support your most important values and goals.

What are good resources for your ongoing growth?

Start with these:

http://www.changedynamics.net/ (my site)

Hypnosis Downloads

related article:

Dare to be yourself

Hypnosis for weight Loss-Habits

Here's a quick habit to adopt--

This was reported in the July 24 Science daily news:

"One of the reasons people on low-carbohydrate diets may lose weight is that they reduce their intake of fructose, a type of sugar that can be made into body fat quickly, according to a researcher at UT Southwestern Medical Center... Hypnosis can increase motivation for habit change, and accelerate the habit change process.

Which habits? That all depends on what current habits keep you overweight. Over the next several days I’ll suggest some habits you might want to replace, eliminate or adopt.

This aren’t in any particular order.

#1 Don’t drink calories, unless it is a full meal.

Eliminate any drink with calories. That
includes milk, coffee with cream or sugar, sodas (even diet soda—there are plenty of good reasons to eliminate artificial sweeteners), juices. The only exception is when the beverage, such as a fruit or vegetable smoothie is your entire meal.
Here’s some examples:

Banana-Strawberry Smoothie Recipe
1 banana, frozen
6 strawberries, frozen
1 ½ cups liquid (orange juice, soy, rice or skim milk)
1 heaping tbsp. high- quality protein powder
1 tsp. flax oil (optional)
Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.

Chocolate Banana Smoothie

1 cup of skim milk
1 to 2 scoops of vanilla flavored protein powder
1 heaping tbs. of cocoa powder
1 banana, frozen
1 tbs. of natural peanut butter
4 or 5 ice cubes
Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.

You get the idea. These smoothies are meal replacements. Don’t replace more than one meal a day with a smoothie.

Drink water, tea (green tea may have additional weight loss benefits) without sweetener, coffee without cream or sugar, and more water.

<media:rating>nonadult</media:rating>
