As a baby boomer teen born to depression-era parents, I never heard that term once. Didn't exist back then and if it had, it would have never come out of my father's mouth. Hard work was his life, and when he had a day off he worked. To my dad and those who were his age and older, balance was something you did to your checkbook when the statement arrived.

It wasn't until the late eighties when this three-word term entered the American lexicon, and it wasn't popularized until the late nineties. Now those three words are said in conjunction as frequently as "pass the salt".

When was the last time you made it through a day without hearing a coworker, friend, or associate talk about achiebing work-life balance? It's almost as if this had become the ultimate destination where everyone wants to go; a Shangri-La where life and work co-exist in perfect harmonyl the intersection of meaningful contribution, passion, relaxation and prosperity.

Who doesn't want to go there, even if only for a weekend visit?

Trouble is, true work-life balance is a myth. I've never met the individual who says they work just the right amount of time (and no more) and that their work provides them everything they need and want, making their life balance perfectly.

We know what work is. It's the "life" part of the equation that interrupts the balance.

Life is an all-inclusive term that encompasses our health and fitness, our social relationships, our family time, our personal interests and recreational pursuits, our spiritual growth, etc.

Now what King or Queen lives in a fairy tale existence where all of those things by themselves are in balance-not-to-mention, in balance with work?

I confess that my life is rarely "in balance". And I carry around a lot of guilt and angst about that.

This weekend, a good friend sent me this video of a brilliant Ted talk. It changed my perspective.

I'm certainly not going to stop working hard, nor will I abandon my desire to seek balance with the various aspects of my life. But what I've discovered from Dan Thurmon's inspiring 18-minute presentation is that it's okay-make that perfectly natural and normal-to be out of balance, as long as I do so on purpose.

So beginning today, I'm going to let go of my pursuit of work-life balance and focus on staying on purspose.

Heck, I'm even going to finally learn to juggle; something I've always wanted to do but never have purposely created the space to pursue.
It was such a fun evening. We had an intimate group of about 25 people. We enjoyed a delicious catered dinner from Kneaders of soups, salad, sandwiches and of course dessert!

Andrea from Queen B and Me taught everyone how to make the crafts. And everyone could choose to make either a 4th of July Burlap Garland or a Summer Wreath that could be decorated however they wanted (with 4th of July decorations, or other bows and things). It was a wonderful and fun evening!

The proceeds from the event will go to support the arts program at Heritage School.

We will be having our next Creating for a Cause Event sometime in July so please stay tuned for more details!
Many of the students went on visits, but for the students that were still on campus there were many fun activities throughout the week that they could participate.

One of the activities that was put on by the Rec Therapy Department was a cupcake decorating competition. Each home was given one dozen cupcakes to decorate. The theme was movies, so they could pick any of the following movies as the theme for their cupcakes:

Wreck it Ralph

Transylvania

Brave

42

Rise of the Guardians

The Hobbit

Monster's Inc

The Avengers

Madagascar

Captain America

Tangled

The homes were allowed to bring their own props that they prepared ahead of time and the cupcakes, frosting, food coloring and some other food/candy items were provided to be used for decorating.

The students were given 45 minutes to decorate their cupcakes and then they were submitted for judging.

See if you can figure out what movie each group of cupcakes is inspired by.

Not typically! Great parents don't overwhelm themselves by trying to use every trick in the book. Instead, they rely on a small number of skills, yet apply them with consistency. If you're feeling overwhelmed by your kids, could it be that you're trying to hard to do too many things? Might it be time to get back to the bare basics? What are these "bare basics"? Listed below are the top three I've observed from my experience with thousands of great parents and educators:

1. They demonstrate unconditional love.

Kids feel this magical type of love when their parents spend plenty of time with them, when their parents focus on their strengths, and when their parents display empathy instead of anger or sarcasm when things go wrong.

2. Their "yes" is always "yes" and their "no" is always "no".

Great parents are extremely careful to set only limits they know they can enforce. They remember this important rule for setting limits:
Never tell a stubborn child what to do.
Instead, describe what you will do or allow.

Would you like your kids to believe that every word you say is important?

3. They allow their kids to experience the logical and natural consequences of their decisions.

Isn't it hard to watch our kids struggle with the consequences of their mistakes? While it breaks our hearts at times, allowing them to learn in this way gives them a tremendous advantage as they grow. They develop respect, responsibility, and a good grasp of good old-fashioned common sense.

The key of course is to display empathy rather than anger. If you ever find this difficult, listen to the audio: Keeping Cool When Parenting Heats Up

Raising great kids really can be a joy when we remember that we don't have to over-complicate parenting with too many skills and too much theory. Keep it simple and enjoy your kids.

For the seventh year in a row we were blessed to have Chad Hymas as our keynote speaker.

Here is another inspirational message from Chad's monthly newsletter.

Facing the Storms

A Wyoming cowboy was once asked what was the greatest lesson he'd learned from his experiences of ranching.

"The Herefords taught me one of life's most important lessons," he replied. "We used to breed cattle for a living, but the winter storms would come and kill 'em off. It would take a terrible toll on the herd. Time and time again, after a cold winter storm, we'd find most of our cattle piled up against the fences, dead as door nails. They would turn their backs to the icy wind, and slowly drift downward until the fences stopped them. There, they just piled up and died. But the Herefords were different than that," he continued.

"They would head straight into the wind and slowly walk the other way until they came to the upper boundary fence where they stood, facing the storm. We always found our Herefords alive and well. they saved their hides by facing the storm."

How many of you have faced with adversity in your life? Have you been faced with hard economic times, sickness, death, or other trials in your life? How well were you able to cope with the challenges that you were facing at the time? How well were you able to weather the storm in life that you were in?

When a problem arises in your life, you have to face it before you can fix it. Facing life's storms brings renewed strength, hope and power for living.

Losing the function of most of my body was not acceptable to me. I wanted miraculous improvements - now! It didn't happen that way. To get where I wanted to go was a struggle. Bit by bit, inch by inch, I did the little things, the possible, the achievable, I weathered the storms to one day get the big things DONE.

If you are facing a storm in your life - health, financial, relational - I beg you to determine right now that you WILL look for the positive in every single day. I know there were numerous days while I walked in the "valley of the shadow" that it was difficult not to be consumed by the letdowns and bad news. I also know that our determination to find the positive, no matter how small, played a large role in helping us ride out our storm.

In his book, "The Impossible Just Takes a Little Longer," Art Berg wrote, "Life changes. It is the nature of life to do so. For those in this life who choose not to change, life will change for you. And it is always more painful that way." Life has changed for my family and me. However uncomfortable that change may be, it is up to me to decide how to respond.

To regret the experience is to regret the lesson - because the lesson is inextricably contained in the experience. Too often when changes occur and our circumstances are not as we planned, we tend to focus on what we lost, what we've missed, what's gone wrong, who is to blame, and "why me." We are not accepting the reality of our changed circumstance or the opportunity those changed circumstances present. We ignore the gift of change and delay or progress.

A bend in the road is not the end of the road... unless you fail to make the turn.

She is the youngest of 9 children, 8 girls and 1 boy. Kristi attended BYU on a vocal scholarship and met her husband Wayne while she was there. They both graduated at the same time, Kristi with a degree in Family Science and Wayne with a degree in Engineering. When she graduated Kristi had a 2 year old son and was pregnant with her next child. They then moved to Houston Texas where her husband got a job. Krisit's job became a stay at home mom, and she loved almost every minute of it. They stayed in Houston for 4 years, moved to Austin for 2 years and then to Phoenix, Arizona for a few years before returning to Utah in 2000. By that time they had 6 children, 4 boys and 2 girls and were happy to live close to family and friends again.

Kristi became interested in pursuing a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2010, almost 20 years after her original college graduation. She was so grateful to graduate in 2012 and pass her licensure exam. Kristi loves working as a therapist with the students at Heritage and enjoys learning from her fellow therapists!

Some of her hobbies include singing, playing the piano, guitar, ukele, sewing, poetry and spending time with her kids. She also enjoys outdoor activities such as boating, biking, hiking and horseback riding.
She is the oldest child in her family, with 2 brothers and 2 sisters. She has been married to her best friend for 45 years come August. They have 2 beautiful daughters, who married 2 terrific son in laws and have blessed them with 6 wonderful grandchildren. Bonnie loves being a grandmother and thinks her family is the best. Her family enjoys doing things together, whether it is climbing, skiing, attending sporting events or dance recitals, playing games or just hanging out. Her family is the most important thing in her life. Bonnie also enjoys sewing, decorating, yard work and traveling wherever the sun is.

Bonnie has worked at Heritage in the accounting department for more than 25 years. She has enjoyed watching Heritage grow and become a wonderful facility that provides very important services to struggling teens.

One of her favorite experiences at Heritage was when we did the play "Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat" for the first time. It was outside and it was a lot of work setting everythnig up. Bonnie had the chance to help back stage with the production. She said "on the first night of the productio, I watched the cast be so nervous and scared but when it was done I saw a cast that felt success and were on such a sweet high. I think many of them had never felt such success before it was a beautiful sight." Bonnie has continues to sew costumes for the plays after work until the wee hours of the night or sometime morning because she wants the kids here to have that experience of success.

As children, many of us looked to
superheroes as the ultimate symbols of strength, courage, and power! We couldn’t imagine anyone being as brave or
determined as Superman! We watched in
awe as he saved the universe and destroyed the bad guys! Many of
us hoped that someday we might be able to be a hero, just like him. At Heritage School we have lots of heroes,
from dedicated staff, to generous community partners, to devoted families, to
the youth who inspire us. The heroes at
Heritage may not wear red capes or have the strength to stop a moving train, but
they do more than Superman ever could.
They change lives!

We would like to invite you to join with us
and become a Heritage Hero! We couldn’t
provide performing arts, intramural sports, equine therapy, and interfaith
humanitarian group without community support, and those programs are often the
key to our youth’s success. One of our
youth recently said “Thank you for using your charity and having the care to
help us change our lives. REAL HEROES
don’t need powers!” In the Administration
lobby we have a Heritage Heroes wall with a list of those who make donations in
2013. If you would like to become a
Heritage Hero you can fill out this form and turn it in to McKaye, in the
Development Office. 100% of your
donation is tax deductible, and you can have your donation divided monthly or
quarterly. Heritage School never uses
donated funds for administrative costs.

Rebecca Lindsay
currently works at Heritage as the Volunteer Coordinator and Clinical Services
Assistant. Rebecca started working at Heritage in 2009 as a Youth Counselor in
the Intensive Support Area (ISA), and stayed there for three years before she
was promoted last May. She loved the close relationships she was able to build
with the students who needed her support while she worked in ISA, and uses the
impact of those relationships each day as she builds and promotes the Mentor
Program at Heritage.

Rebecca was
born and raised in Utah. She grew up in Southern Utah, in a small town called
Parowan, and then moved to Orem to attend Utah Valley University in 2004. She
graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, and decided to stay in Orem
since her roots were being planted at Heritage. Rebecca is the youngest of four
kids, and loves being the aunt to six wonderful nieces and nephews. She loves
to cook and experiment new recipes, sew and make crafts, watch movies
(especially old musicals), and surf the internet when she has the time. Rebecca
also danced from the age of three all the way up through college, and will
occasionally choreograph routines for local dance teams, and judge competitions
throughout the state.

Rebecca’s
favorite food from the cafeteria is any pasta recipe and the salad bar! There
is nothing wrong with pasta and a good salad as far as Rebecca is concerned, and
the kitchen staff at Heritage always come up with so many yummy
dishes!

Rebecca’s
favorite moments at Heritage are when a volunteer comes to the campus for the
first time, how amazed they are with the students and the program! They seem to get a spark inside them that
triggers their excitement and all of that is contributed to the students! She also appreciates the positive
atmosphere of Heritage, and is so thankful for
all the students at Heritage and the impact they have had on her life! She is grateful to work for such a fantastic
program!

She loves small towns, but she now lives in the big city of Payson, Utah. Dede is married to Russell Depew (our Director of Accounting) and they have three cute kids, ages 7,4 and 2 who keep them on their toes. In their "free" time they like to go 4-wheeling and camping and just being silly. They love to visit family and have to much fun just being together. Russ and DeDe like to watch their kids play all of their sports. DeDe loves singing and dancing and anything to do with music. Her favorite sport is volleyball, but she also plays softball and basketball. She also loves to be crafty. She and Russ play a lot of games and go on dates with their friends. They are often caught quoting movie lines and their kids even do it too, which they get a kick out of.

Another random fact about DeDe is that she is terrified of the movie "The Wizard of Oz" and the flying monkeys. Her claim to fame is that she was a contestant on the "Price is Right".

DeDe is an operator at Heritage and loves her job and the people she works with. She has worked at Heritage since November 2010. She loves to see the students from Heritage as they come and go off campus and she even gets to visit with some of them. She thinks its awesome to see how they change and grow while they are here.

This was the first reunion we have sponsored, with hopefully many more to come.

The event was held on Thursday March 21 from 7:00-9:00PM at the Redondo Beach Yacht Club. We had a great turn out of about 50 people and it was nice to see how some of the students are doing now.

Here are some fun pictures that we got of the event:
In her spare time she likes to go snowboarding, wake boarding, camping and be crafty. Her favorite food from our cafeteria is the Cafe Rio Style Salad and the Chicken and Wild Rice Soup.

Laura was the Utah Recreation Therapy Association's Conference Chair for this year and successfully planned and implemented a 2 day conference for 340 people for two days in February. The Association has also asked her to be President Elect (she would stand in for the President if something happens to him and will take over when his term is over) for the next two years! Laura is also the lead Recreation Therapist at Heritage.

She has so many favorite experiences from working at Heritage. She loves skiing, snowboarding and camping with the students. She loves teaching a student how to roast a marshmallow over the fire for a first time, or being with them for any new experiences that are fun! She has many great memories from camping trips over the past 12 years.
Read his past newsletter pieces here:

Be - the Helpers

The Price of Integrity

Leader-Less

At the age of 27, Chad Hymas' life changed drastically when he was in an accident and became a quadriplegic. Chad is one of the youngest people ever to receive the CPAE award and be inducted into the National Speaker Hall of Fame. He is also a friend of Heritage. We are very happy that he will be coming next month to speak at our Parent Conference.

Becoming Your Best Self

If I asked you if it were possible for you to get into the best shape of your life, we could agree that it is. If I asked you if it were possible for you to become smarter than you've ever been, I think we would agree that you could work hard, study, learn and practice more than you ever had. But strangely, the idea of becoming the "perfect vision" of ourselves seems so unobtainable. It seems impossible.

There is an opportunity for you to become great - just as great as you wish to be. In starting out in life you may set your hearts upon things very difficult to attain to, but possibly within your reach. In your first efforts to gratify your desired you may fail, and your continued efforts may not prove what may be termed a success. But the experience you obtain while pursuing your hearts' desired must necessarily be profitable to you, and even your mistakes, if mistakes you make, will be turned to your advantage.

How do we become perfect? Is it possible? There may be some things you are already perfect at. Becomnig your best self take a lot of patience and diligence. It is a daily task we must be ready to take on. I have found several things I like to do that help me become the best version of myself.

Patience with myself as well as others.

Prayer.

Try something new.

Take advice.

Enjoy eating healthy.

Help a stranger.

Forgive someone from my past.

Love one another.

Provide service to someone in need, a neighbor or a friend.

Don't judge someone or their circumstance.

Read books and get knowledge.

Be a good friend, one that listens.

Yes, we will all make mistakes as we strive to be the best spouse, parent, friend and sibling. There may be times when, tired and discouraged, we will lose our temper and yell. There will be times where we feel like giving up. We feel like no matter how hard we try, someone is always going to be better than us. That's just it, no matter how hard you try, someone will always be better than you at some things. There will be times someones house will always be cleaner, their dinners will always be better, they will make more money, have better behaved children, less health problems, and they may seem to have it all together. Perhaps that same person is thinking the same exact thing about you?

And we will have moments (many, many moments) when we are perfect. That cake recipe you've been struggling with for year? Finally cake out perfectly... That complicated piano piece you've been practicing You didn't miss a single not this time... That phone call you made to a friend, just because you were thinking of her? It was exactly what she needed at a particularly low point in her life. - We may not see or recognize all of our perfect moments, and we may stumble and fall more than once in between those moments. but that's okay.

"Do not expect to become perfect at once. If you do, you will be disappointed. Be better today than you were yesterday, and be better tomorrow than you are today. The temptations the perhaps partially overcome us today, let them not overcome us so far tomorrow. Thus continue to be a little better day be day; and do not let your life wear away without accomplishing good to others as well as you ourselves." - Lorenzo Snow

Each last day or each last week should be the best we have every experiences that is we should advance ourselves a little every day, in knowledge and wisdom, and in the ability to accomplish good.

She is the infection control nurse, employee health nurse, and the nurse case manager for Sequoia East and Sequoia West. She works to ensure the safety of our employees as well as try to prevent diseases from coming on to campus, such as the flu. In addition to the flu shot, Robin updates all the students immunizations which has earner her the title of "The Shot Lady"

Robin's family lives in Pocatello, Idaho but she spent a lot of her child on the east coast in Virginia and North Carolina. She has two sisters. Robin's younger sister is autistic and is one of her main inspirations in life. Robin is a member of the Salt Lake Rowing Club and she loves being out on the water! Robin loves being a redhead and has a fiery personality to match her ginger locks. Robin also loved to travel. Her most recent trips were to Anchorage, Alaska and Montreal Canada. Currently, she is planning a trip to Europe to atend the Redhead Festival in Holland this summer. She also volunteers for the FIRST robotics organization that works to promote higher education. Robin's favorite food at the Heritage Cafeteria is the pasta bar.

Robin said that nearly every day at Heritage is memorable. She loves seeing the kids facial expressions when she shows them pictures from her vaccine education book. Seeing people with measles, mumps and hepatitis really shocks the kids! She said one particular day she was updating a student's MMR vaccine, she explained that these shots are normally given during infancy when the student told her "My birth mother was on drugs and gone a lot when I was living with her. Use these small playbill ads to congratulate or wish the best to your favorite cast member, the entire cast and production crew, Heritage, etc. The playbills are a keepsake and a reminder of the students' accomplishments, and the kids love to see the ads that are places just for them!

Please email your ad to McKaye, the Development Director, at mckaye.treanor@heritagertc.org by April 2nd, at 5:00PM and pay using this link (http://www.heritagertc.org/donate.php). In the "Donation Purpose" field, please put "Break-a-Leg Ad". Each 25$ ad is approximately .74''x 2.35'' size and is placed in the playbill according to space availability. If you would like to purchase two or three spaces, we can also make a larger ad. If you would like to purchase a black and white quarter page ad with a photo, the cost is $100. Please let McKaye know if you want to purchase a larger ad or one with color and she will give you a quote.
The purpose of this meeting was to capture strategic goals for the future and help develop the means to bring these goals into reality.

We decided the theme for this year would be "Customer Service". Everyone in the group was given a pad of post-its and about 20-30 minutes to write down as many ways as they could think of to improve the customer service on campus. Then the post-its were organized into different categories and then groups of staff members made a strategic plan how to accomplish some of these different ideas.

We hope that through improving our program, communication efforts and training our staff we will be able to improve our customer service in the year to come. If you have any ideas for how we can improve customer service on our campus, please let us know!
