Space Wolves Return to Ben's Desk

I going to start with a confession. I don't like the new Primars Space Marines. There I've been bottling that up for ages. It feels good to get it out in the open. I don't think they are all that bad. The standard MkX armour I'm on with. It reminds me of a cross between mk4 mk8 and sigmar models. I've painted a full squad of metal mk8 space marines, which I thought I would really enjoy. By the time I'd started the 3rd one I'd had enough. I think I could get on board with the new amour, however I don't feel any great need to. The new Redemptor Dreadnought does hold a small amount of appeal to me. Some of the Primaris HQ models are also quite nice, but very pricey for a single model. The one model I would be really happy to take a paint brush to is the new Standard Bearer. That said I feel like the moment I add one Primaris to my Ultramarine collection it will been infected with heresy. The increased base sizes gave me enough change resistance to make Sheldon Cooper lose a knights sleep. With this primaris dark cloud over the Ultramarines, I've decided to focus my efforts on my Space Wolves. I figure they can manage quite well all on their own, without support from bigger super human help. I mean if the Space Wolves needed bigger modes they would be wilder and hairy and well looks lot like Wulfen.

I'm really pleased to say I've been really enjoying painting my Wolves. I've done a small amount of painting over August. I've even managed to bring myself to paint the last remaining metal Spave Wolf scout Sargent in my collection. I've been putting an increasing amount of effort into being tidy with my modes lately. There are a couple of areas on this model I'm still not quite happy with, the face and chest plate need a bit more work, I'm.also not ecstatic with the highlighting on the Chainsword. However it puts most of my other scouts to shame so I'm leaving it as it is for now.

I've also been working on a lot of half started models. A unit of Grey Hunters was the first thing I tried. I stared them with a spray gun over 2 years ago but didn't like how dark they ended up being, which put me off finishing them. After a long break, I've managed to bring myself to re-paint all the armour and try finish them off. They are still a bit too dark for my liking, but I can live with it.

My Wolfguard terminators where next. I originally painted these very fast for some games of the 40k 5th edition, which was the last edition I really enjoyed, well enough to play weekely rather than monthly. I am enjoying 8th so far and would like to get more games in. I've completely finished two of these Wolf Guard Terminators and got the whole squad to a game ready Standard. I had hoped to use them in a battle recently but forgot to pack them, eye roll. The Wolf Guard with the Assualt Cannon is in the rework waiting line. The Thunder Hammers are the ones I've been finishing.

The back row are waiting for the terminus passion to take me again.

My power armour wolf Guard are next in line for some

love. I'm intending to add a two or three more storm bolters to the squad.

I have no small amount of Wolves left to start. Grimar on his slay is very high on the list.

Well as it turned out I had a night off marathon training and managed to add those Storm Boltersand a few chain swords to some of those plastic power armour Wolf Guard.

Summer Painting Fury

Well maybe not a painting fury, but all this good marketing and good will gestures from GW does appear to be having a positive impact on my hobby life. I've been purchasing stuff, mainly books paints and a few second hand bits and bobs, or more to the point Tyranids. I also updated my wish list for the first time since Christmas and have actually been painting, and while injuries are preventing me running, they are only partly to blame for a resurgence in hobby life. It must be said I am feeling good will to towards GW for the 1st time in a long time. And that was before I picked up the awesome new white dwarf today. Anyway here is what I've been working on.

Most recently I've managed to get somewhere with my Emporers Children. It may only be one model with a very basic paint application but there are 5 more on the way.

Even more enjoyable has been making some new objective markers for my game board using a mix of GW bits included the Space Marine casualties, I ordered along with my Wathammer Fest Tickets. I've use some of the standard GW resin basing kit along with a base from the 25th aniversary model.

Also seen above is evidence of my once again growing hive fleet Kraken, thanks to the donations from the dual workshop at Wathammer Fest and some sensibly priced plastic on eBay.

And apart from a bit more work on the sternguard that's it. The hobby area is still tidy and pairing is happening, all be it in 30 minute blocks.

40k Eighth Edition Rumour Round Up.

40k Eighth Edition Already

When I thought about writing something on 8th Edition, my initial thoughts were no it's way too early 7th edition hasn't been out for more than a couple of months. But after a few seconds of research I discovered it's not. Buy now Warhammer 9th Edition (AOS) is well in to it stock building print run and the finishing touches are probably being made to 40k 8th edition. Given it will take around a year to print all the books required. Yep that' right due to Games Workshops print capabilities 40k 8th edition has almost been finished!

This below come from chatter on forums mainly DakkaDakka. Someone who wishes to remain anonymous (possible Jeremy Vetock) is doing the ground work changes for 40k 8th edition.

Force Organisation Charts will change.

While the 7th edition unbound list has gone down well. The traditional army list has gotten very complicated so expect to see some simplification here and a few other tweeks.

Movement

Seventh edition reduced some of the random elements of movement to help a couple of armies out. Changes to codex's and new units for those armies will mean some of 6th editions random movement can return. There may also be some drastic changes for some units basic movement. There is concern that the required 6x4 table is putting people of playing so basic movement may be reduced.

Turn Sequence

The basic 4 phases will remain however their will be clarification over where some fixed events take place.

Shooting

To hit modifiers may be returning to the game, the reaction to snap shooting has been positive so this will be expanded to include the effects to cover.

Codex Changes

Well they will be plenty. The one Chaos player are hoping for won't happen. If you want Legion rules there is Forge World's Horus Heresy. The current Chaos space marines armies are not legions they are traitors. There will be marks of Chaos available for each squad. If someone want's an Emperors Children Army then a mark of Slanesh can be taken for each squad. The corruption of Chaos overpowers any legion or chapter DNA attributes. The Sortia also won't change much in this edition of 40k. Read into that what you want.

More will be clear from the changes in Warhammer, which will become even more closely aligned to the 40k core rules, or the other way around depending on how you look at it.

So how credible is this all? I would rate as vey low, hence this going on the blog and not the website. I don't really want my name against it:)

It really looks like someone has been reading through very old 40k rules sets to me. That may be the way is goes, but I'd be surprised. At the same time I'm surprised at how much talk of 8th edition there is already.

New Models

There are also rumours flying about Sisters of Battle getting some love, a laser tank, but that's not really news. That wolf has been cried too many times to be believed, even if it is true.

Finally to Hosten on reddit who commented that this post is pretty much the same as the last post I made and also complaining there is no content over and above the one source used for this article, I say

Ultramarine Vanguard in progress

I was fully intending to paint some sisters of battle this weekend however a failed attempt to go to Nottingham on Saturday resulted in the opportunity to spend the evening with another 40k veteran. After having a look at his Salamander Vanguard Veterans, I got inspired to do some more work on my own. A few hours later and I'd taken two of the marines in the unit from base blue to almost finished and a few more hours saw the whole squad base painter. At this rate I'll get onto the older finecast squad this year, lol. Sorry Sisters maybe Valentine's Day will be a better affair for you.

I'm having a bit of a paintbrush Wargh at the moment. I normally find I enjoy painting a couple of Orks but then quickly loose interest. A planed 1500 point game with Gareth has inspired me and the momentum is holding for now. I've knocked out about 16 orks over a couple of short painting sessions, and not an air brush in sight. I've also got a couple more bad moons knocked out bringing the hoard to 26 models. Once I'm happy with the Geoffs I'm going to put my Grotts together.

Christmas is a busy time. In addition to making a new game board I finally got to make my Land Raider Proteus. Normally I buy myself a Birthday Present at Games Day. Due to the delayed scheduling of Warhammer Fest, this year it was a Christmas Present, which has meant it's sat in it's bag for 2 months waiting for the celebration of our Lord's Birth.

I did of course check it all over on the day of purchase to make sure it was complete.

Assembly of this kit is reasonable stright forward. Most of the bit slot together very easily.

The most difficult part of the build is the tracks, due to the injection mould attaching between the clogs of the rear tracks and my personal dislike of sanding or filing resin without a clean room and breathing apparatuse. I only use a hobby knive and a screw driver as a chisle. The result is the flash does not get removed perfectly in reseased parts. Unfortunate on the Land Raider Proteus kit to get the tracks to fit perfectly it all needs to be removed. Which means my tracks still don't fit as they should.

The tracks are also fragile and I managed to remove and loose two of the inter-track link clogs. So I had to fashion some myself. Fortunately this was on the lower side of the hull. This a fairly obvouse in the picture below.

The other part of the build which was complicated was the sponsor assembly. It is possible to make the gun pivot on both the X and Y axis. Due to excess super glue, which was only really a small amount, my Land Raider Proteus' guns only swivel on the X axis. There also appear to be two optional sponsor protection mounts in this kit. Very few of the Land Raider Proteus I've seen use these and they look like they would make painting the tank more complex.

Painting this Land Raider Proteus was a doddle. I've elected to go for a traditional Codex Grey colour scheme. I won't be doing this on all my Emperor's Children this way but the largest most expensive kits will be codex grey so they can be used in my other Space Marine amies, Ultramarines, Space Wolves, Blood Angels and Grey Knights. It is my intention to fit legion coloursed Forge world doors and Legion coloured additional armour plates to nit them into the rest of my armour. My smaller tanks will also be a mix of purple and grey to carry this them through the army.

To paint the Land Raider Proteus I've used my age old technique of black and grey spray primer from above. I didn't spray the tank in the best conditions.

As the doors will be chanagable I sprayed them separately. The shade of Grey is darker than it appears in the photo's above.

Finally here is a picture of the tank base coated and in my view gamable, although I will be gradually highlighting and detailing it.

Ruined Buildings and Emporer's Children

I've spend a lot of the day building models and making model buildings. My game board has become quite busy recently due to some wall of myters additions, so I decided to reduce the foot print of some of the ruins by turning them into more solid buildings. I'm reasonably happy with the result.

This building can be separate in the middle and a couple of small walls I have left over can be used to make the split halfs into ruins.

I had hoped to get my 1st real Heresy Emporer's Children squad base coated but was enjoying playing with buildings too much to get the air gun out. I did manage to finish putting them together and get a good undercoat on the models which appears to have stuck to the resin well. Next weekend is going to be a social one so I don't hold out much hope of having much to share, still we shall see.

Update

I've managed to get a few minutes with the air brush and get the 1st couple of coats of purple down. I'm starting to understand how it's possible to stop a rebellion with a single squad of Space Marines.

I'm going to try to post to this blog every week with an update on my hobbie progress. This assumes there will be some hobbie progress which isn't always the case. This weekend I've be putting together 5 more Forge Wolrd MkVi Space Marines for my Emporers Children army I've also been working on my gaming table. Now having a table perminatly set up in my garage I frequently see my part painted terain. I've also found I can get away with working on terain after the sun goes down. My eyes are not good enought to be painting miniatures without natural light; I'm. Not sure they ever really were.

The Skysheid I build about 3 Christmases ago but didn't get much further with painting it, than spraying it black and grey. This is my top tip for painting terrain. Buy some auto spray primer from an auto shop. As long as you try get a good black under coat us can use grey as a light source by spraying the subject from one direction; normally on top. You may spot my mini landing pad aka chocolate tin undernether the sky shield has been sprayed from the edges rather than the top. The main rule is spay whatever you want leaving some black showing to add shadow. If you are like me you may stop there, however adding some detail to the focal points of the model can help you complete the look.

These objective markers have been build using spares from my bits boxes. There are intended to represent ammo or weapon dumps. I've tried to us space Marine parts for one and Imperial Guard for the other. Again I've used a grey over black spay to base paint these. I've washed the weapons with think layers of null oil and then applied bolt gun metal, that's silver to new painters. It only took a few minutes to paint these but can add a real interesting dimension to games.

I've almost finished my test squad for my new Emporer's children army. I'm slightly unhappy with the shad of purple, it's a bit darker than I want it to be. I'm going to try using a second coat of Geanstealer Purple with the spay gun. I'm a bit concerned about loosing some of the natural highlighting the air brush provides, so might do a few more test models before committing to the army colours. I need to paint a couple more Bolter marines and older style helmits, so I can use this squad in 30k. Does anyone know if the current GW purple wash is any ligher than old one I'm using?

The pictures are a bit dark. I'll take some more once I've finished the bases and detail work.

Long Fangs

This is a good use for all those spare Missile launcher Space Wolves players end up with. Attach them to some old rogue trader Long Fangs. I love the character of these old long fangs. There isn't much here that was incorporated in to the current space wolves range. I'm hoping Games Workshop will make some new plastics that have some of these features one day.

Thirteenth Company

I do love the 13th company. It's too bad Games Workshop didn't make a wolverine box set as part of the last release. The mark of the wolverine was a cool part of the previous Space Wolves codex. There are still lots of good uses for these old Thirteenth company models even though there are no rules for them now. Proxy lone wolves or scouts spring to mind. Failing that they could be a cool objective for any space wolves player. I don't recommend trying to pick these up second hand, you can buy a squad of Forgewold Space Wolf Terminator Wolf Guard for about the same amount of money.

After this week's epic foot in month episode by jonsgot I'm going to leave it there before I write something I might regret.

It's been a productive weekend. I've put down the Vanguard(unfinished) and have started working on my purple Space Marines. These are actually for someone else(no I'm not taking commissions). The 1st squad will a test for my Heresy erea Emperors children. So far I'm really happy with the results. I'm following the forge world painting guide from white dwarf. Purple base (air brush), geanstealer layer (air brush), purple wash, highlight with geanstealer purple. The gold is being directly applied onto the purple.

Upgraded KR Multicase

Today I received my upgraded KR multicase. My Ultramarines have recently exceaded the combined 320 model captacy of a single KR and GW case. The balancing act between the car and Warhammer World have also got a bit tide. I've seen far to many models hit the deck and smash into too many pieces this way. I opted for the KR480 which has 12 4x10 trays with comparments on a similar size to a games workshop case. While I love the increased capacity of the higher density KR trays, Terminators will not fit and jump packed and banned models are not well suited. I must say I'm as delighted with this case as my 1st KR box. While the case does not have the same quality and durability as the GW and battle foam cases, the model transport capacity is higher than GW cases and the cost is much lower than the battle foam equiverlent. The trays are a bit shallower than GW cases so terminator 40mm bases stick out a bit far. However with the amount of spare trays it's possible to inverse one tray to provide more space for the 40mm bases. The other thing I'm very happy about with this case is the interchangeability with my other KR cases. This has meant I can up the cacipty of the case to 500 by simply swapping 2 trays with my KR200 it also means I put Terminator holding tray it the KR200 case which holds my Space Wolves. I'll sign off with a picture of my Ultramarine collection which totals over 300 Space Marines including Terminators, stored in just 9 of the 12 trays in the KR480 case.

Wargammer World's Front Door Closed till 2015

Well is has and it isn't. If you check out the Warhammer World website you will see the Miniature Hall is now closed and it appears it will be for the rest of this year. If still want to visit Warhammer world you can, but you might think it shut, for the big blue fence installed around the old entrance. The good news is the bar is still open as is the new temporary shop which has been installed in the smaller half of the gaming hall. Which obviously means less gaming tables. So why have GW retreated even in there own HQ? It's all part of a refurbishment of Warhammer World which includes a new Glass front entrance. There are some limited displays in place in the gaming hall. Including the Space Wolves fortress monastery. Some of the feature boards have been retired, including the infamously Fort Pain. Jimgam Bridge is still available though.<br /><br />
