Collapsing Cooling Towers

Cute little video from Ecotricity.

It's time to move on. Our country, and all of us, need to move from a fossil fuel past to a renewable energy future. The mood in Britain has turned very much against the Big Six energy companies. And it's not hard to see why. People are fed up with the unethical pricing, complex tariffs, awful customer service and the dire lack of investment in new sources of green energy. It's become quite unbearable, self evidently. Even the government are calling on people to leave the Big Six. People:Power can bring change to the energy sector -- when people join Ecotricity they vote with their energy bills - and the more that do so the better. Together we can harness the energy bills of Britain and direct them to a proper outcome - the creation of a Green, energy independent Britain -- a Green Britain. http://www.ecotricity.co.uk/dump-big-six

I'm loving the gross/cute characters showing their colorful innards that Charlie Immer is producing. It makes me want to listen to grindcore and pick flowers. Check out his blog for more goodies.

The Gruffalo

2011-11-27T18:00:00.000-08:00

It's been a while, hasn't it char-lovers? I'm back with something all kinds of adorable.

I was on Hulu browsing for some bg noise while I work, and ended up having a 20 minute diversion from everything when I came across The Gruffalo. I can't seem to embed the whole thing, so I'm gonna show off this li'l trailer from youtube, and you can go watch it here.

It was released about a year ago, but that doesn't make it any less awesome.

I've taken these screenshots from the full-length version, so stop here if you'd rather watch it first.

If you have already watched it, you might have realized that this is a film adapted from Julia Donaldson (The Snail and the Whale, What the Ladybird Heard, The Troll) and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.

The first look has a bit of a Maurice Sendak/Where the Wild Things Are feeling to it. The story in its simplicity has a playful tone, and the animation is quirky. It's rare to come across design that strikes the exact same cords as the rest of the cues, especially on TV.

The character designers listed in the credits include Max Lang (he has a lot of storyboards from the short), Jacob Schwinn, Harald Siepermann (Tarzan, Mulan, Enchanted), and no other than the awesome Uwe Heidchötter. It's kinda hard to tell who designed what, but very clear that they definitely made a wonderful team together.

Gobelins grad, Disney animation trainee. Hard to not shine with that combo, but once you start looking at her work, you will realize this lady possesses more than just luck or good info. She has this super cool way of drawing things that make em seem as if they're in motion- as if they've never been "just a drawing". I enjoy the roughness of her sketches since it helps keep things alive. Visit her blog here.

Andrew Schick

2011-08-05T15:12:00.000-07:00

The Daily Claw The Monsters and Beasts of Andrew Schick, full of awesome weird chicken scratch characters. Of course they are not chicken stratches I just wanted to use the word chicken because his creatures look like they are inspired by bird like creatures.

Mitchloidolt

2011-06-23T12:33:00.001-07:00

Mitchloidolt interpretation of classic NES characters are just too fun. Make a side scroller with this art and I will play it for about a week, but it'll be an intense awesome week.

Natalie Hall

Recent Ringling grad, Natalie Hall. She's got some pretty fantastic shapes happening, as well as charming hands and faces. I look forward to seeing what she does in the future...

Victor Dubrovsky

2011-05-20T17:44:00.001-07:00

I came across one of these lil guys as I was researching on a project a few months ago. It instantly stole the heart of my art director and producer, so I made a mental note to see what else Victor had on the web- and I'm glad I didn't forget to go back.
Obviously this isn't your typical feature animation character designer work. I don't even know how people make felt needle things. Still I consider them to be appropriate for CharBlarg, since they have a specific shape language and poses that create independent personalities while still belonging to the same design family. And they're crazy-cute! Here's the entire selection, if you'd like to further investigate...

Jacob Weinstein

Do you like basketball? Well, too bad I do. And I also like Jacob Weinstein's illustrations of NBA greats. His caricature of Blake Griffin is so amazingly dead on. A few prints are available for purchase here

Mike Lee

Mike Lee fellow Otis class of 2006 Alumni was amazing then and is even more amazing now. From crazy beautiful matte paintings to cute adorable characters that live and breathe, Mike Lee can do it all. I love black and white graphite looking illustration. They are so soft and delicate yet bold and grounded. Not only is he a fantastic creative artist but he is a positive and helpful person.
