It’s everyone’s favorite time of year! (Smell the sarcasm?) You know, that time of year when Wally World & other such stores are packed to the gills with parents, grandparents, and anyone else who has a list of Christmas gifts to buy that is reaching about 3 miles long and several thousand dollars? Yeah, that time of year. A friend of mine’s kids have already made out their lists, and the one girl was told she had to redo her list because everything on it was deemed too expensive. She’s about 11 or 12 years old. Sorry people, you’re going to have to start buying expensive gifts because a $10 Barbie doll won’t cut it anymore.

I never can understand why it is that people say they want their kids to give them a wish list for Christmas and then say “no, you can’t have that stuff make a different one.” Hello? It’s a WISH list! They WISH they would get that stuff for Christmas. You don’t have to go fully by the list, but if there’s a couple of things that are less expensive, then get them. Or look for deals. Kids want ipods? There’s lots of places to find them online for cheap! They already have ipods? Get them iTunes gift cards for crying out loud. There are tons of ways to get around the expensive wish lists, but you don’t have to go so far as to make them redo them.

Great, time to Christmas shop again

Yes, you read that right. With Halloween over, it’s time to start thinking about the good old Christmas shopping. Not that I dislike Christmas shopping really, I just dislike all the crowds and stupid people who think that if they don’t get that Barbie or whatever for their kid, it is going to be the end of the world. They never think to buy the kids stuff they can really use like Eagle Creek luggage or anything like that. Sure the kids might not appreciate it, but they don’t need toys all the time. Seriously. Clothes and other useful items can be interspersed with the toys and even though the kids may make faces, at least you know they’ll be getting something they’ll actually use, as opposed to opening, playing with it for three or four days and then tossing it to the wayside for something else.

Well, It is Over

Well, another Halloween has come and gone. Yes there will still be some Halloween decorations up around the neighborhoods (just like Christmas they don’t get taken down for weeks after the holiday is over lol), yes some particularly stubborn kids will continue to wear their costumes for weeks on end. (And why not? Those costumes cost a fortune to wear only once and then give away because they’ll be outgrown/not wanted next year.) But now it’s all over, and I can go back to sitting at my computer all evening, trying to decide if I should put granite tile in my cafe on Cafe World, or Ming Timbers. (If you’re a friend of mine of Facebook and play Cafe World, you’ve probably seen that I’m currently getting the Ming set up put together. LOL)

However, I AM doing something again this year, and hoping that I can keep at it. This year should be easier as I’ve had an idea for an actual series in my head for months now. I am participating in NaNoWriMo again this year. I will not be doing a rewrite on the never finished Ghost in the Hall for this year’s NaNoWriMo, and I will not be posting the story anywhere until I feel it is ready. Beware Kiddies….

Beware the frights that come tomorrow night. The pranks, the scares, the haunted houses. The cemeteries will be overflowing with kids and others hoping to catch a glimpse of a ghost. Abandoned mental hospitals and other “haunted” locations will be packed to the brim with ghost hunters. And let me tell you, some of the places that will hold Halloween scarefests might need to make sure their patrons have taken advantage of a free life insurance quote and obtained insurance for their loved ones before going in.

Right now I’m watching an abandoned mental asylum being investigated for ghosts. Love it, can’t wait to see what they fine.

Memorable Experience

Now of course, I am a Wiccan, but previous to becoming a Wiccan, I was a Mormon. One of the most memorable experiences I had was when the Mormon temple in Omaha, NE opened up. When a temple’s construction is finished, there is a couple of weeks in which the Mormon church holds an “open temple” so to speak – meaning that the general public can actually wander through the temple and see what it looks like. They will take you on a tour, explain the rooms, explain what they are for, etc. It’s a real eye opening experience for Mormons who haven’t yet been to the temple, and also to non-members who are curious about the temples.

The first thing you do is put one those lovely disposable shoe covers so that you don’t mess up the temple carpets. Believe me when I say, all the carpets are white. Some may have designs, but the carpets are mostly white. But the temples are gorgeous buildings. I say if you have a chance to go to a Mormon temple open house, do it. You’ll be amazed.

At Least I Don’t Have to Worry

About the constant pressure of regular monthly bills. I don’t have a power bill. I don’t have a water bill. I don’t have mortgage/rent. I don’t have a life insurance policy to keep up. I don’t have to pay for cable. I don’t have to pay for internet. I don’t have to do anything other than put a little gas in the car here and buy groceries (if we need them, otherwise I don’t have to buy anything except stuff I need for me or my pets).

So I’m thinking of saving up and getting an item all of us want around here, but nobody has. A digital camera. We want it so we can take pictures of our crocheted items, our jewelry, etc. We just want to get a digital camera so we dont’ have to buy film anymore. So I’m thinking of starting to save up and get one. We’ll see how that goes.

My Baby’s Sick

My dog Panda, who is my baby, hasn’t been feeling well the past couple of days. Wednesday night he was sound asleep and all of a sudden started yelping in pain. We thought he’d gotten caught up in the blankets (it’s happened before) and started looking to find where he was caught so we could untangle him. He wasn’t tangled up, but he had peed & pooped, plus was not “with” us, and couldn’t stand up, all of which told me that he had, once again, had a seizure. He hasn’t had a seizure in over a year. Not since we pulled him from eating the Purina Dog Chow. *sigh* So now we have to figure out what is causing the seizures.

He’s been eating and drinking fine since then, but he was throwing up today – a couple of times this morning when we got up, and then about 5 times in 30 minutes a couple of hours ago. The strange thing is – he eats his treats and he’s fine. He ate some dog food and it took over 3 hours for him to throw up. A lot of what I’ve looked up indicates this may simply be an upset stomach. I’m hoping that’s all it is, as Monday is the soonest he could see a vet because the 24/7 ER vets here DO NOT make arrangements for payment at all. I know, we’ve called them before. *sigh*

One of the things I noted while doing some internet research, was the abundance of people who feel that all food sold at Walmart, etc is crap. This is NOT true. Sorry people. Just because your vet sells it (hello, paid to sell it??), or it’s at a specialty or “feed” store does not mean it’s any better than buying Purina. I’ve read the ingredient labels on a LOT of the so-called “quality” foods and guess what? I found the SAME ingredients and the SAME percentages of crude protein, etc in Purina One and other foods sold at, GASP, Walmart.

I am sick and tired of seeing/hearing people say that if you can’t afford to spend $30.00 for a 8lb bag of food (and yes I have seen some that are that much), or if you can’t afford to run straight to the 24/7 ER vet, you shouldn’t have an animal. I actually saw where someone told a pet owner to either borrow the money or surrender the animal to a rescue facility so it can receive care. #1 – rescue facilities often DO NOT take sick animals, and if they do, unless they are a no-kill facility, they usually put the animal down. It’s much cheaper for them to put the animal down, than to treat it and most of these “rescue” facilities are frankly, broke. #2 – Some people don’t have other people who can just lend them money at the drop of a hat. All my friends and family are just as broke as I am. #3 – In case you missed the memo, most rescue facilities require you to pay a fee of as little as $25 and in some places as much as $100 to surrender an animal. So really? You think that’s going to HELP? #4 – Do you have any idea how fucking CRUEL that sounds? How about this? (Keep in mind that MANY hospital ERs will NOT see you if you do NOT have a true emergency now.) Next time your child is ill and you just don’t have the money to see the doctor and you don’t have anyone you can borrow the money from, and you can’t take them to the ER, you should have to give that child up to CPS in order to make sure they receive medical care. Wow, bet the tables are turned there, aren’t they? Well to people like me, who HAVE NO CHILDREN, our pets ARE OUR CHILDREN. So suggesting that a person surrender their pet to a rescue facility is just as cruel as telling them to surrender their children to CPS because they can’t afford a doctor’s visit.

Come on people, get a life. EVERYONE has a time when they can’t afford to take care of their animals precisely as they should, but it doesn’t mean they should have to give them up or be forced to be told what a horrible person they are. Funny that our PETS have to be treated better than our KIDS and ELDERLY!

Going Out

Today we have a lot to be doing. We have to go to the grocery store, go to the pet store, and go to the bank. I got paid today by one of my companies and we have to find out if there is still money in the bank – if there is we’ll have a different shopping list that we will if it’s just my paycheck that we’re going on!

Groceries are for the three of us humans, obviously, but the pet store run is for dog and cat supplies. The dog has started having seizures again, which I believe is related to something he is eating – I am considering getting a food that does not have any grains in it as it seems to be after he eats something grain-related that he gets sick or has seizures. As for the kitties, they need food, and we’re thinking of some new toys for them as they’ve been rather rambunctious lately.

So I suppose if we are to get out of here and do what we need to do, I’d better get going! Any plans for today in your world?

Isn’t Old English Funny?

If you read as much as I do, you come across some interesting phrases and words. I’m not talking about the extremely old English that is barely recognizable today, I’m talking about English that we would all understand, just might not really use. You know, like knickers for underwear, breeches for pants, frock for dress, etc. It is interesting to read historical novels and see the authors attempting to make sure that the characters’ speech fits in with the time period.

I’ve also seen more than my fair share of “historical” novels (romance and otherwise) that had far too modern of language in the books. It isn’t that hard (I wouldn’t think) to at least make an attempt to make sure your grammar or word usage is in keeping with the time period in which your novel is set, but I guess it is too hard for some authors.

Ever read a book set in a past time period and wonder why they’re speaking like they would if they were living here with us?

Warmer Weather Will Ensue??

I would certainly hope that warmer weather would ensue, but I’m not holding my breath. The forecast here is for a 40% chance for rain tonight, but then tomorrow it will be sunny and in the 50s. I’m hoping so, because I’m sick of rain. I really don’t care if the temp goes higher, but I’m sick of the rain. Makes me want to find Outer Banks vacation rentals information and book myself a trip out of this place for a little while.

We’ve been out in the rain for the last three days. Wednesday we had to go pay bills and get groceries, then Thursday we had a church potluck dinner to go to and then had to run to the store quick after that. Then today we had to go get yet another couple of items from the store so I could fix the taco salad for supper tonight. Yay. I can definitely say I am sick and tired of rain. Rain, rain, go away.
