WASHINGTON, Oct 30 (Reuters) - The United States has won praise for resolving a post-coup crisis in Honduras that caused regional turmoil, but some experts question why the Obama administration took so long to act in its own backyard.

After months of failed negotiations, Honduras' de facto government late on Thursday agreed to a U.S.-driven deal that opens the door for the return to power of President Manuel Zelaya, who was toppled in a military coup in June.

Los diputados del Congreso Nacional comienzan a recibir presiones para inclinar su decisión sobre la restitución o no de Manuel Zelaya en el poder. Dejaron en claro además que, si las circunstancias son iguales a las del 28 de junio, se ratificará la destitución de Zelaya y la sucesión constitucional de Roberto Micheletti.

Las comisiones de Micheletti y de Zelaya acordaron el jueves pasado, con la mediación de Thomas Shannon, subsecretario de Estado de EE UU, que fuera el Congreso el que dirimiera ese punto, que empantanó las negociaciones que buscaban poner fin a la crisis política.

Demonstrators hurling fireworks chased the American ambassador from a university fair on Friday because of his criticism of a Supreme Court ruling letting President Daniel Ortega seek another term. Riot police officers and bodyguards hustled the ambassador, Robert J. Callahan, back into his car, and he left unharmed. The embassy has come under fire since Mr. Callahan called the ruling that overturned the one-term limit “improper.”

MEXICO CITY — Gunmen ambushed a peasant union leader and his family in northern Mexico, killing him and 14 others in an attack that bore the hallmarks of a hit by drug cartels but one that his organization said might have been related to his union work.

The victims, who included four children, were leaving a ranch in the northern state of Sonora on Friday afternoon when the gunmen opened fire with AK-47s on a convoy of three trucks, according to one of the three survivors, the state police said.
